[Cooker] k3b and KDE desktop icons

2003-03-15 Thread Henri
Hi,
configuring K3b add a line to fstab : then an Harddrive icon appears on
the KDE desktop : this is not good as there is already a supermount line
in fstab to be able to use the cd writer as a CDrom !
any idea of soution ? In any case, the icon should not be a harddrive one !

AFAIK, you should not need to configure k3b? Didn't Laurent patch it to
not run k3b-setup the first time?

so by changing order of `/etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg'.

Cool! I thought it looked to go in order, at one point, but didn't quite know
WHAT order, or where to look to change it. Now I do.

It doesn't LOOK like it's doing this now, but maybe it does..
If several sources are available for an item, according to the latest
hdlst.cz, and one fails, try the others.

I think this is available (or soon will be) with urpmi.

I haven't had any failure of this of late. I expect it's fixed.

But this is gonna be hard for rpmdrake since the
installer/downloader is grpmi, which doesn't know anything about
 dependencies (it only installs/downloads).

IOW, it would do the same thing that urpmi already does to figure out
which of several versions is the newest, but if the hdlist.cz file was
outdated, it would automatically try the next logical release stepping
  instead

This wouldn't be safe since a new release may have different
 dependencies.

Good point.

[Cooker] Xbox version - installer problem

2003-03-15 Thread Michael Steil
Hi!

I am working on an adaption of 9.1 RC2 for the Xbox. I am currently
working on the installation system. I am using an Xbox-patched version
of the 2.4.21-0.11mdkBOOT kernel and I'm trying to get the installation
X server running.

I did this before in Mandrake 9.0 and it worked quite well. The Xbox
bootloader sets up a 640x480x32bpp (BGRX) screen (VESA framebuffer
driver), and after patching install_gtk.pm to write an X configuration
file with a screen depth of 32 instead of 16, the installation X server
(XFree/FB 3.3.6) detected and used the screen for the installation
procedure.

Now on 9.1 RC2 everything is the same. The same X server binary is
identical, install_gtk.pm creates the same X server config file - again
I patched it to 32 bits. But this time, the X server keeps complaining:

---snip---
(**) FBDev: Using default frame buffer video mode
Fatal server error:
fbdevScreenInit: unable to set screen params (Invalid argument)
---snip---
In 9.0 it printed some information about the screen, like 4096 KB RAM,
32 bpp and everything, this time I get no such statistics, just this
error.

I compared the kernel .config with the 2.4.19-16mdkBOOT one of 9.0, and
the framebuffer configuration seems to be identical.

Any ideas?

  Michael

Actually the odd thing is that it won't print Western pages. In particular I
was trying to print out http://www.lwn.net/

It's causing all printing of mozilla from all pages (with Chinese
or without Chinese) to fail. This should make it easy to
reproduce.

I have all of the locales and fonts-ttf installed.

The patch of 'svetlo' is right (sorry it was my fault that I forgot

The 2.4.21-0.13 kernel taken from Mandrake Linux Cooker-i586 20030314 12:08 is
still not booting. Same problems, it hangs after:
Uncompressing linuxOK booting.

I have synched my whole test box to Cooker as of 13th March. I have installed
the new /usr/sbin/drakgw file above and enabling connection sharing still kills
internet access for the desktop machine.

I looked for messages while I was setting up connection sharing and found that
DHCP is unable to start up. It complains that...

That would be nice to have it activated by default, so that people installing OO

hm,
may be i'm wrong,
but it appears to me that he's useing
the ati.2 drivers
( from contrib or manually installed)
which require different radeon drm driver:
drm-kernel from http://gatos.sf.net

i don't know how is the ati.2 package in
contrib made, but i assume that neither
the ati.2 package nor the kernel provide
this radeon drm driver.

1. when i installed the ati.2 package from contrib,
it didn't recompile the radeon driver
( i don't use cooker kernel,
so ati.2 couldn't have built module,
 and should eventually recompile it)

2. the ati.2 drivers are not in cooker main,
so it's hard to believe that the cooker kernel
has the drm module from ati.2

 Try urpmi.setup :)

Actually, just loaded it the other day, based on references I saw on the list.
Pretty neat proggy!

It does seem to have an issue with updating multiple sources, however, with
little or no indication of how the update going leaving the user wondering if
it has locked up or what... Update sources also seems not to work to
dependably -- I update sources, then go to a console and do it, and still
have stuff updated at the console, meaning urpmi.setup didn't do it, altho it
didn't produce any error messages either.

.. Which reminds me. Since that's not an official package yet, AFAIK, where
do bug reports go? Is reporting them here good enough or...?

ALSA emu10k1 has some bugs in the actual kernel (SBLive! Player sound card). For
example, sound is delayed in Freeciv by 2 seconds when using ESD output (see bug
).
After recompiling the latest ALSA driver 0.9.1, everything works fine. I do not
know if it is related to a bug in the actual emu10k1 driver or to compiling
parameters.
Is it still time to have 0.9.1 ALSA drivers in final kernel ?

Re: [Cooker] Xbox version - installer problem

2003-03-15 Thread Warly
Michael Steil [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

 Hi!

I am working on an adaption of 9.1 RC2 for the Xbox. I am currently
working on the installation system. I am using an Xbox-patched version
of the 2.4.21-0.11mdkBOOT kernel and I'm trying to get the
 installation X server running.

I did this before in Mandrake 9.0 and it worked quite well. The Xbox
bootloader sets up a 640x480x32bpp (BGRX) screen (VESA framebuffer
driver), and after patching install_gtk.pm to write an X configuration
file with a screen depth of 32 instead of 16, the installation X
server (XFree/FB 3.3.6) detected and used the screen for the
 installation procedure.

Now on 9.1 RC2 everything is the same. The same X server binary is
identical, install_gtk.pm creates the same X server config file -
again I patched it to 32 bits. But this time, the X server keeps
 complaining:

 ---snip---
(**) FBDev: Using default frame buffer video mode

 Fatal server error:
fbdevScreenInit: unable to set screen params (Invalid argument)
 ---snip---

In 9.0 it printed some information about the screen, like 4096 KB RAM,
32 bpp and everything, this time I get no such statistics, just this
 error.

I compared the kernel .config with the 2.4.19-16mdkBOOT one of 9.0,
and the framebuffer configuration seems to be identical.

 Any ideas?

How are you testing the installation ? Network, CD ?

The installation is present in 2 for on the system, as live files
in /Mandrake/mdkinst, and as ramdisk image in Mandrake/base/mdkinst_stage2.bz2

In NFS, harddrive, and when system has less than 64 MB of ram, the
live files are used, otherwize the ramdisk choosen.

If you are in a situation in which ramdisk is used, have you
regenerated it (for this purpose, run as root misc/make_mdkinst
Mandrake/mdkinst Mandrake/base/mdkinst_stage2 (important without
bz2 extension))

WARNING I giving the command by memory I may have made typos.

small comment to comment #12.

it's not a fix it's a workaround ,
which can not be used in every configuration:
for example if it's not possible for you to
restart all the time the X server running on
your primary(defined in BIOS) graphic card
cause you are running a bit strange system
(see http://startx.times.lv/ ).

i know that mandrake wont go to support such systems,
but i really hope they wont resolve the problem with
this fix.

i'm sure not only such system could be affected by this fix

During Installation, my ATI radeon 9700 is recognized as a RADEON card. When
testing, the computer doesn't seems to send any signal to my screen (dell 1800
FP digital). No luck with pressing ALT-F1 or any other terminal, no more luck
with CTRL-ALT-BCKSPACE.

I had to restart computer manually CTRL-ALT-DEL did not work neither. I don't
think the PC hung because the numlock led was still responding.

On reboot, the X11 did try to start but leaving me with a no-signal screen. But
then, I could switch to another terminal (ALT-F2)

The rdeon 9700 is not supported in 9.1.
You need to use the generic vega driver.
If you want 3d hardware accel you will need to dl and install the ATI linux driver
from ATI.

In Konqueror, in file manager mode, the arborescence uses specified font.
However, on the right part, where the files appear, file names still use
Helvetica non-antiliased police. It would be nicer to choose an anti-aliased
police. I did not find how to change it.

It might also be an idea to extend the options for ps2pdf to have a few
variations, passing the -dPDFSETTTINGS options, such as =/prepress, =/ebook.

For more info on these options, see:

http://www.ghostscript.com/doc/cvs/Ps2pdf.htm

It seems -dPDFSETTINGS=/default is the same as just using ps2pdf without
options, and the -dPDFSETTINGS=/ebook seems not to work.

Here are some examples of the difference in file sizes created:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] bgmilne]$ du final_printed*
4.8Mfinal_printed-default.ps.pdf
5.8Mfinal_printed-prepress.ps.pdf
5.2Mfinal_printed-printer.ps.pdf
4.3Mfinal_printed-screen.ps.pdf
37M final_printed.ps
4.8Mfinal_printed.ps.pdf

final_printed is a 100+ page document with a lot of graphics.
final_printed.ps.pdf was created by the default ps2pdf command,
final_printed-default.ps.pdf used ps2pdf -dPDFSETTINGS=/default, and similarly
for the rest.

See the attached .desktop for implementing these and fixing at least the ps2pdf
desktop entry.

Arg, you're right, that's a pain - it seems to have been dropped from the
Mandrake kernel :\. The problem is that orinoco_cs is supposed to obsolete the
wavelan and wvlan drivers :\. I don't know where you can get a copy of the wvlan
source to compile, either...what a pain. Have you tested with 128bit encryption?
If you could do that, and verify that it works, we could possibly mail the
orinoco author, since that'd make two of us who couldn't get 64bit encryption to
work. He's pretty responsive - seemed nice when I mailed him with PCMCIA IDs. So
that might be the only other option...what a pain :(. Anyway, I'm fairly sure
this isn't a Mandrake bug, but may as well leave it here as it's a convenient
place to discuss :)

In my home wireless environment, where I have no encryption turned on, I do not
run the script above, but simply type dhclient eth1 on MDK 9.1RC2 and I am up

Re: [Cooker] k3b and KDE desktop icons

2003-03-15 Thread w9ya
I ran into this (or in my case, a *very* similar problem) last night also. I
did not want the icon for hdd showing up, but also wanted to keep my /dev/hdd
listing (in my case not a supermount) and the desktop icon I had added on my
own (hdd is a cdrom in my case). I also was getting the floppy icon I did not
want.

Here's what worked for me as a fix.

using /usr/share/mdk/kde/root-interface/kdesktoprc as an example, I added a
[Devices] section to my ~/.kde/share/config/kdesktoprc containing:

exclude=kdedevice/hdd_mounted,kdedevice/hdd_unmounted,
kdedevice/floppy_mounted,kdedevice/floppy_unmounted

(the above has a carriage return NOT in the original ASCII)

Hope this helps.

Very best regards;

Bob Finch

Hi!

As it is more calm now here I want to ask if there is a way to update that

drakconnect recognizes the avm fritz pci v2 and it configures the right

simple lines, this card is known to isdn4net and the problem is solved.

I have provided a patch alltough I don't know if the patch have to have a
specific form. Further I have made a src.rpm and rpm and mailed the user with
these problem these new rpm and it installed and ran fine.

I mailed to dchaumette , made a bugreport seperate for it and asked here.

Any chance to fix it before release ?

I configured Mozilla mail for the account and it worked.

Next, I checked the settings in Evolution and tried receiving mail and
it worked.

The most likely cause would be my error. I made 6 revisions to my
password and other settings the first time, so I'm sure I tried the
settings that worked today, but an error on my part is still the most
likely explanation.

Otherwise, Compuserve has had some odd interaction over the past few
days, but that seems unlikely.

The problem isn't happening any more.

There's still a bug in that case, though. If it's known that 9700 cards won't
work with the radeon driver, DrakX shouldn't choose this driver for 9700 cards,
it should choose the generic driver.

Maybe this was an APIC issue? Booting the install kernel with 'noapic' should
fix this.

Marking as wontfix, since this is an errata-type issue and was handled as such
(but a better description of the apic issue should be made for 9.1 errata).

Note that if you suspect it may be the APIC issue, then you would probably have

2003-03-15 Thread h.prm
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=3349

   Product: kdebase
 Component: program
Summary: KPRINTER doesn't work when LDAP is used
   Version: 3.1-83mdk
  Platform: PC
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P2
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

My PC is configured as a LDAP-client for an LDAP-server on my main linux-box
(Mdk9.0). Everything works like a charm except printing through KDE.
I have cups configured on both machines and printing works with all printing
commands ( lp,lpr,lpr-cups,lpr-xpp ) except the ones supplied by kdebase
(kprinter, lpr-kprinter, embedded prining from konqueror, ...). The KDE-commands
crash and I receive the following message (only the relevant part):
...
(no debugging symbols found)...(no debugging symbols found)...[New Thread 16384
(LWP 4257)]

   from /usr/lib/libkdecore.so.4
#2 0x41139d58 in __libc_sigaction () from /lib/libc.so.6

I think this isn't very useful, more interesting is, that all printing-related
KDE-programs ( kjobviewer, kcontrolcenter-part for printing) crash the same way !!

By the way, CUPS is left to standard-configuration, that is 'base' is accessible
by everyone without authentication, only 'admin' is left up to 'System' and
basic authentication.

Any ideas?

This is amother small irritating issue, I think the menu file for
kdebase-konquerorsu should launch 'konqueror --profile filemanagement file:/',
since the user will likely want to do something outside root's home. But the
most important thing is to get a tree view by defuaul ( the '--profile

This is not a bug.

Anyway, the best way is to create an empty partition, and install the beta/rc
there. When prompted about where to place the bootloader, choose to put it in
the first sector of the root (or boot) partition. Then, after installation you
will still get your old installation. Start drakboot, and add another boot entry
of type Other, using the partition you just installed on. You should now be
able to boot the beta/rc.

I have a quite similar problem with my Dell C610 since 3 cooker version of XFree
(but with new kernel too, may be the two are conflicting ?).

Everything is OK on console, I can switch CRT/LCD/Both with the Dell Function
Key (Fn) + F7

When I launch X, Fn + F7 make a little schmurtz on screen, but nothing really
happens. The problem is that the CRT screen is keeping the resolution of
console, I mean the desktop is bigger than the showed on screen. This was
happening even before, but I was switching off/on CRT display to have all the
desktop on screen...

Also, if LCD was off, at the X start, it goes gray ;) like On but no image.

I try to load the i8k module as I see in kernel config that it's for Dell laptop
(and special keys), but everything was working before, without i8k module.
Same problem with i8k module loaded.

Also, about ACPI, it is not working well (no battery charge), even after
disabled apci, and put in kernel the battery, fan and so on in kernel.

The acpi-kernel and Xfree problem have appear quite at same period.

A url link to the no e-patent site in default bookmarks, on the galaxy

I forgot to say that I've a ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY, with DRI. May be I'll try
to disable all acpi related in kernel, and try XFree with APM only.

I am not sure if this is a kernel, XFree or what problem. But here it
is.

If I turn on the crt_out after loading the toshiba_acpi module, and I am
not running X, everythign works OK -- I get output both to my laptop screen and
to the crt (which is what you want when giving a presentation at
a podium). As long as I am at console level, I'm OK.

If I type startx however, the lcd screen turns white and streaky while the
windowing system displays fine on the crt. Thus, I can display windows on my
lcd *or* on the crt, but not both.

In addition, I cannot modify /proc/acpi/toshiba/video while windows is
running. I have to get out of X, go back to console, change it there, and then
get back into windows.

Mysql does not start at bootime in runlevel 3 or 5 due to an bug in drakxservices.

Drakxservices sets up a link(K..mysql) in the appropriate runlevels when marked
to be started at boottime, but it is supposed to setup a link (S..mysql) which
is the correct one to have a service started(S means start K means stop) If you
uncheck mysql in drakxservices, then it completely removes the link instead of
setting up the link as K..mysql.
This error has already been in LM 9.0 and still exists in 9.1 RC1 and cooker
version. I guess the error results from the fact, that chkconfig --list returns
mysql as the last element and the perlscript that uses this list for
drakxservices must handle the last entry(mysql) somehow wrong.

The script is pretty long and I'm not familiar with it, so I don't think I would
be able to findout the error within a reasonable time.

Please check this.

Created an attachment (id=368)

report.bug.cooker2.gz

I tried to duplicate the steps taken for the rc2 install with an hd install of
20030314 21:05, all md5sums verified, newly reformatted reiserfs / and /home.
At bootloader configuration, selected 'Advanced' and selected the box to make a
bootdisk. Chose to install grub to hdg8, the / partition. Was not asked what
is the disk containing my primary bootloader. After reboot, as in rc2, there
did not appear to be a bootloader on hdg8 and there was no menu.lst.
Configuring in drakboot created a menu and installed the bootloader to hdg8.
Seemingly, the selection to create a bootdisk in Advanced is the factor common
to both failures to install the bootloader at install. Perhaps related, a
screen is displayed subsequent to the installer's bootloader configuration
section wherein creation of the bootdisk is declined by default and I must
reselect to create the bootdisk. Report.bug is attached.

formatted / partition, hdg8 on the hpt372 onboard controller. Install was,
otherwise, uneventfully successful but, when I rebooted, there was no menu.lst

with drakboot, which then wrote GRUB to hdg8, and all worked as expected.

Of course, one could query the scripts from the package *after* they have been
installed, and run them again? But the question is whether all %post scripts
would be safe? And trigger scripts would make this more difficult.

If a package is installed via rpmdrake, and a config file is changed, so that a
.rpmnew file is created, the user is prompted (I think by gurpmi?) with the
option to use the .rpmnew file, the original, and to compare differences.

This is really nice.

But the rpm is alerady installed at that point. If the rpm had to run programs
after installation - e.g. a server, or generate fils - this was done using the
old config file.

Example - if /etc/fonts/fonts.conf changes in an update, the font cache will be
rebuilt using the old /etc/fonts/fonts..conf before the user is prompted, and
after selecting .rpmnew the font cache and the conf file are out of sync,
possibly causing slow startup or incorrect behaviour for some programs.

There are other examples of course, e.g. if apache.conf is changed.

I'm wondering if it'd be possible to integrate rpm gurpmi a little further,
and have the rpm post-install stuff done *after* the user has decided? Or if
this even makes sense? Just a thought, I've marked it minor.

[Cooker] NTFS resizing works inRC1

2003-03-15 Thread Esko Kauppinen
Howdy!

Just bought a new laptop (Fujitsu Siemens Amilo 2,53 GHz) which had
WindowsXP installed on a 40 Gb single partitioned NTFS drive.

I installed Mdk 9.1 RC2, resized the drive appr. to half and half.
Installation was almost perfect, first time didn't see my mouse and
hanged after resizing but second try was perfect, mouse was found and
resizing worked. Mdk booted ok and when I checked WinXP, it did a check
of the drive, rebooted and started after that normally.

Very good!
