[Cooker] rc.sysinit: fs check on ext3 is evil
Today is about the fourth time I had to explain that pressing Y for a filesystem check on an uncleanly shutdown system is a bit idea, at least on ext3. I think I had it myself once or twice as well. If you do this fsck is very likely to remove a bit to many of your files. It actually seems much worse than normally on ext2 (but it is a long time ago that I used ext2, so perhaps its normal), and it is definately much worse than using the journal to restore the fs. In any case, rc.sysinit message sounds like if pressing Yes within 5 seconds is a good idea, while on a journalling system, it is probably not the best idea. So either: - remove the message al together for journalling fs (an expert can still do it manually, if for some reason it is wanted) - make the check sound like a bad idea. d.

With so many people wanting to keep a local cooker tree, it would seem self-evident This would be could, someone could investigate on that topic? Warly, I volunteer! I'd like to co-ordinate at least. I'll to set up a CookerP2P project if that is something that people would like to see (and preferably endorsed by the Mandrake developers!). Shall I use Sourceforge, or something else? I think SF is the way to go yes. I invite people interested in a CookerP2P app to email me, so I can notify them when things are moving. Suggestions and offers of help are very welcome of course! Consider this my letter of intent to be a tester, I doubt I could do much more than that. As for suggestions, there is a bittorrent c library project on sf named libbt: http://sourceforge.net/projects/libbt/ It's still very early in the development, but it looks like it supports the basic functions. Now to devise a way of handling: 1) an entire tree of files/directories 2) when a file changes mid-stream Item #1 will have to be handled with mods to the structure of the bittorrent itself and some intelligence for filesystem traversal. Item #2 will have to be handled with the invention of some form of message passing from master to clients to indicate that the bittorrent should be resynced (but it should not be an outbound connection, rather, the master waits for clients to check in with their status and then tells them that the torrent needs to be resynced). I have visions of using rsync functions to resync the torrents, then bittorrent functions to sync individual files. Note that some form of caching or indexing really should be used as well because the amount of filesystem thrashing when a 100 clients all ask for segments of different files will be extreme and on ALL clients, not just the server. Alternatively, use a two tier system where the first tier is a single bittorrent to keep everybody's tree defining torrents in sync with the master. Then the second tier is running from that synced torrent. I also suggest that we not tie this to Mandrake or Cooker, but try to make it a general mirroring solution (at least for anybody not behind a NAT'ing firewall that they don't have the ability to forward the required ports to their machine). - -- Blue skies... [Cooker] KDE Madness
Hey gang: Without (again) opening the debate over the breakup/fragmentation of kde into the various packages by Mandrake, I would however like to make a suggestion. I am *still* discovering which packages to install to recover functionality that I had a couple of months ago. To wit; I sincerely HOPE that there WILL BE a proper upgrade from Mandrake 9.1 to 9.2 that will RETAIN ALL of the kde's usefullness in light of the package fragmentation. I can't think of anything that will be so frustrating to someone upgrading than to have less of KDE when finished with an upgrade. This would surely be a bad public relations fiasco. Having less functionality should be preventable with proper testing of whatever solution is taken to compensate for this fragmentation of the kde packaging. I will cross my fingers that the proper steps are/will be taken before 9.2's release. Flame suit on - Bob Finch

The ext3 root partition it's journal recovered now before init even starts. Also, if left alone during boot after an unclean shutdown, it does the right thing, and the user doesn't come back to a Do you want to run fsck?-type question. With bootsplash in silent mode by default, the user probably won't see any tempting prompts anyway ;-). Even if fsck is run by the user, it's now after a successful journal recovery, so shouldn't result in corruption of files. (I couldn't find any changelog claiming credit for this apparent improvement, so maybe I haven't been testing enough, maybe I should hard reset while installing packages, running rsync, playing music, and compiling a kernel?). for fsck, i suggest to frederic lepied that fsck should result in rebooting if exit code is 2 because fsck (sanely of course) directly fix the fs, thus bypassing kernel's vfs[1]. actually frederic lepied is the one to be credited for the implementation. fred noticed that 3 should resulted in immediate reboot too. we could prevent rebooting because of fsck fixes bypassed the vfs if we add the fsck for the root fs in the initrd so that root fs is fixed even before being mounted ro by initcripts. drawback: memory usage at bootstrapping time, especially for xfs. another improvement would be to alter fsck so that it claimed the partition (using /dev/raw access) so that a fs driver would not mount it while being checked (that would need some kernel-2.6.x backport through). but this is not as sexy as checking fs from initrd because it does not provide any more safety since the root fs is: - either already ro mounted and checked from initscripts - or not yet mounted and checked from initrd

It's the sobig.f virus, which is written in MSVC, and propogates through windows, so I don't see how I could have sent it to anyone, but they attach a copy of it with my return address. This makes me very mad. I don't have a single computer running Windows, and I highly doubt if Balsa can execute MS macros LOL. I'm proud of the fact that I don't propogate viruses. Happens with me, too. If a Windows box is infected, the virus searches nearly all files on the hard disk (not only the address book) for mail adresses and sends mails with each one having two randomly chosen but different addresses, one for the sender (From:) and one for the destination (To:). The virus runs its own SMTP implementation, so that there is no provider rejecting the mail with wrong From: addresses. At the destination it is not recognized that the From: address is wrong and the error message is simply sent to the address in the From: header. You probably got many more addresses from the virus itself than error messages from others who received the virus. See http://hq.mcafeeasap.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=100561 for more info about the virus. Anyone knows a way how to find the box where the virus e-mails (not the error messages, the mails from the virus itself) come from? I would like to inform the users of the infected machines, as these mails are annoying. Till

So either: - remove the message al together for journalling fs (an expert can still do it manually, if for some reason it is wanted) - make the check sound like a bad idea. d. .. or if it's an ext3 partition have it ask about restoring from the journal instead of running the ext2 file system check? [Cooker] ALSA kernel try-to-fix
I tried removing patches MS24 through MS28 from the current kernel, and both problems (snd-seq-midi missing, Quattro lockup) are still present. I tried removing various other patches, and the kernel won't compile. It shouldn't be hard to figure out why snd-seq-midi is missing though... I'd assume it's in the huge Makefile patch, which totally messes with the makefile. Also I'm guessing the Quattro problem is due to patch MS11, but the kernel won't compile without it, so I can't test my idea. Austin -- Austin Acton Hon.B.Sc. Actually, autofs is a better solution for this in the end ... but I guess small networks are too small for autofs. Actually, I might not want to re-mount everything. I find autofs a bit over the top (unless it is pre-configured in such a way that makes configuration really easy). The last time I looked a autofs, I ended up spending a few hours on reading the documentation and configuration etc. Maybe it is easier now. In the situation where there is an unplanned re-boot or a power failure (without a UPS), one would expect the system to come up and mount everything. http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4862 --- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-24-08 00:28 --- Danny, it seems much better on 9.2b2 than on 9.1, I had an automatic reboot (instead of seeing the REBOOT LINUX message) on my new 9.2b2 install, and I can't get it to do the old bad behaviour by hard resets, with root on ext3. Or are you seeing worse behaviour on cooker? (I couldn't find any changelog claiming credit for this apparent improvement, so maybe I haven't been testing enough, maybe I should hard reset while installing packages, running rsync, playing music, and compiling a kernel?). -- Configure bugmail: http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is. --- Reminder: --- assigned_to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] status: UNCONFIRMED creation_date: description: Many people are tempted to press Y after an unclean shutdown so that (according to message) filesystem gets checked. I've tried to put my name, same result... Another comment : the query_bug.cgi and show_bug.cgi pages are way too heavy when entering bugs for products like galeon / lilo / galeon (over 500 KB ! thanksfully I've got ADSL but it may contribute to your poor server performances...).
