Why, oh why are they changing the directory structure again?

Here's the command I use:

rsync -auvP --delete ftp.uinett.no::Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/ .

The directory structure does not change. However the move from one

With respect, it would not have if you had used:

rsync -av -H -P --stats --delete $mirror-1/ $mirror-2/

to do the move between machines, as troels.rsync6.2.pl (see sig below) does.

[Cooker] [Bug 4864] [kernel] New: Halt error

   Product: kernel
 Component: default
   Summary: Halt error
   Product: kernel
   Version: 2.4.22-0.6mdk
  Platform: PC
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P2
 Component: default
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Upon reciving an init 0 signal from GDM or GNOME, the kernel will begin
shutdown, but then will produce a Memory dump and some other illegible stuff (on
the f2 verbose screen) and it will crash there, the error is reported in the
3c59x.o module for 3com NICs, if you shut down the kernel via a terminal using
halt (init 0 will also produce the error), the error will not happen.

[Cooker] rc.sysinit: fs check on ext3 is evil

2003-08-24 Thread danny

Today is about the fourth time I had to explain that pressing Y for a
filesystem check on an uncleanly shutdown system is a bit idea, at least
on ext3. I think I had it myself once or twice as well. If you do this
fsck is very likely to remove a bit to many of your files. It actually
seems much worse than normally on ext2 (but it is a long time ago that I
used ext2, so perhaps its normal), and it is definately much worse than
using the journal to restore the fs.

In any case, rc.sysinit message sounds like if pressing Yes within 5
seconds is a good idea, while on a journalling system, it is probably not
the best idea. So either:
- remove the message al together for journalling fs (an expert can still
do it manually, if for some reason it is wanted)
- make the check sound like a bad idea.

This would be could, someone could investigate on that topic?
Warly, I volunteer! I'd like to co-ordinate at least. I'll to set up a
CookerP2P project if that is something that people would like to see (and
preferably endorsed by the Mandrake developers!). Shall I use Sourceforge, or
something else?

I think SF is the way to go yes.

I invite people interested in a CookerP2P app to email me, so I can notify
them when things are moving. Suggestions and offers of help are very welcome
of course!

Consider this my letter of intent to be a tester, I doubt I could do
much more than that.

As for suggestions, there is a bittorrent c library project on sf named
libbt: http://sourceforge.net/projects/libbt/ It's still very early
in the development, but it looks like it supports the basic functions.
Now to devise a way of handling:
1) an entire tree of files/directories
2) when a file changes mid-stream

Item #1 will have to be handled with mods to the structure of the
bittorrent itself and some intelligence for filesystem traversal.

Item #2 will have to be handled with the invention of some form of
message passing from master to clients to indicate that the bittorrent
should be resynced (but it should not be an outbound connection, rather,
the master waits for clients to check in with their status and then
tells them that the torrent needs to be resynced).

I have visions of using rsync functions to resync the torrents, then
bittorrent functions to sync individual files. Note that some form of
caching or indexing really should be used as well because the amount of
filesystem thrashing when a 100 clients all ask for segments of
different files will be extreme and on ALL clients, not just the server.

Alternatively, use a two tier system where the first tier is a single
bittorrent to keep everybody's tree defining torrents in sync with the
master. Then the second tier is running from that synced torrent.

I also suggest that we not tie this to Mandrake or Cooker, but try to
make it a general mirroring solution (at least for anybody not behind a
NAT'ing firewall that they don't have the ability to forward the
required ports to their machine).

I'm proud of the fact that I don't propogate viruses.

Long story short: a SoBig.F infected system will send out emails to
everybody in the address book (it may also scan IE's cache for email
addresses), setting the From: header on the email to other random
addresses on the infected system. So someone who has you in their

Do you realize that this won't work? If everyone syncs at the same time
and only twice a day it will take days for things to propogate to all
the mirrors. Most better mirrors are probably syncing once an hour.

Further, the problem you are trying to solve is happening because you're
syncing at the same time as the mirror upstream from you. So limiting
everyone to sync at roughly the same time would just make this worse.

[Cooker] subversion 0.25-3 dependency issue

2003-08-24 Thread Benjamin Pflugmann
Hi!

I just tried to install (not upgrade) subversion and got the following
error:

  $ sudo -H /usr/sbin/urpmi subversion-client-local
Some package requested cannot be installed:
  libsubversion0-0.25-3mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied devel(libsvn_diff-1))
  subversion-client-local-0.25-3mdk.i586 (due to missing
libsubversion0-0.25-3mdk.i586) (Y/n) n

When I look for it, there are several packages requiring
devel(libsvn_diff-1), but none providing it:

  $ urpmf --requires 'libsvn_diff-1'
  subversion-client-common:libsvn_diff-1.so.0
  subversion-client-common:devel(libsvn_diff-1)
  libsubversion0:libsvn_diff-1.so.0
  libsubversion0:devel(libsvn_diff-1)
  subversion-repos:libsvn_diff-1.so.0

  $ urpmf --provides 'libsvn_diff-1'
  libsubversion0:libsvn_diff-1.so.0

(Btw, if I call urpmf with 'devel(libsvn_diff-1)' it gives no results
at all. Any idea how the argument has be written to work correctly?)

I had no problem to do a system upgrade (urpmi --auto-select) just
beforehand[1], so I am quite sure that I am not affected by the mirror

[Cooker] KDE Madness

2003-08-24 Thread w9ya
Hey gang:

Without (again) opening the debate over the breakup/fragmentation of kde into
the various packages by Mandrake, I would however like to make a
suggestion.

I am *still* discovering which packages to install to recover functionality
that I had a couple of months ago. To wit;

I sincerely HOPE that there WILL BE a proper upgrade from Mandrake 9.1 to 9.2
that will RETAIN ALL of the kde's usefullness in light of the package
fragmentation. I can't think of anything that will be so frustrating to
someone upgrading than to have less of KDE when finished with an upgrade.
This would surely be a bad public relations fiasco.

Having less functionality should be preventable with proper testing of
whatever solution is taken to compensate for this fragmentation of the kde
packaging. I will cross my fingers that the proper steps are/will be taken
before 9.2's release.

Re: [Cooker] [Bug 4862] [initscripts] running e2fsck on ext3 oftenresults in dataloss

2003-08-24 Thread Thierry Vignaud
[bgmilne] [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Danny, it seems much better on 9.2b2 than on 9.1, I had an automatic reboot
(instead of seeing the REBOOT LINUX message) on my new 9.2b2 install, and I
can't get it to do the old bad behaviour by hard resets, with root on ext3. The
ext3 root partition it's journal recovered now before init even starts.

Also, if left alone during boot after an unclean shutdown, it does the right
thing, and the user doesn't come back to a Do you want to run fsck?-type question.

With bootsplash in silent mode by default, the user probably won't see any
tempting prompts anyway ;-). Even if fsck is run by the user, it's now after a
successful journal recovery, so shouldn't result in corruption of files.

(I couldn't find any changelog claiming credit for this apparent
improvement, so maybe I haven't been testing enough, maybe I should
hard reset while installing packages, running rsync, playing music,
 and compiling a kernel?).

for fsck, i suggest to frederic lepied that fsck should result in
rebooting if exit code is 2 because fsck (sanely of course) directly
fix the fs, thus bypassing kernel's vfs[1].

actually frederic lepied is the one to be credited for the
implementation. fred noticed that 3 should resulted in immediate
reboot too.

we could prevent rebooting because of fsck fixes bypassed the vfs if
we add the fsck for the root fs in the initrd so that root fs is fixed
even before being mounted ro by initcripts. drawback: memory usage at
bootstrapping time, especially for xfs.

another improvement would be to alter fsck so that it claimed the
partition (using /dev/raw access) so that a fs driver would not mount
it while being checked (that would need some kernel-2.6.x backport
through).

but this is not as sexy as checking fs from initrd because it does not
provide any more safety since the root fs is:

- either already ro mounted and checked from initscripts

- or not yet mounted and checked from initrd

During installation, Select individual packages, an horizontal scrollbar appears when
expanding
the list. Then, it's not possible to read the name a package and to see the checkbox.
With alphabetic list or collapsed list there is no problem.
I don't remember this problem in a previous version.
As it is necessary to see together the checkbox and the full name of the package, I
suggest to
show the checkbox at left. Thus the beginning of the name will be always visible.

[Cooker] Possible bug in squids instalation and using drakwizard

2003-08-24 Thread Michael Lothian
Hi

When try and install squids from cooker (it wasn't on the 9.2b2 CDs by
the way) it gives an error saying perl(Authan::SMB) is required. Whereas
usually it tells me the name of the package required. I forced installation.

I tried to set us the squids server using the drakwizard however it
never actually set the thing us properly so it just worked (very
annoying) I had to go in and edit /etc/squid/squid.conf manually to make
it work.

Again I'm not sure if this has something to do with me or an actual bug

I keep getting these messages from virus scanners on various mail servers all

their mail server. It's the sobig.f virus, which is written in MSVC, and
propogates through windows, so I don't see how I could have sent it to anyone,
but they attach a copy of it with my return address.

This makes me very mad. I don't have a single computer running Windows, and I
highly doubt if Balsa can execute MS macros LOL.
I'm proud of the fact that I don't propogate viruses.

Happens with me, too. If a Windows box is infected, the virus searches
nearly all files on the hard disk (not only the address book) for mail
adresses and sends mails with each one having two randomly chosen but
different addresses, one for the sender (From:) and one for the
destination (To:). The virus runs its own SMTP implementation, so that
there is no provider rejecting the mail with wrong From: addresses. At
the destination it is not recognized that the From: address is wrong
and the error message is simply sent to the address in the From:
header. You probably got many more addresses from the virus itself than
error messages from others who received the virus.

See

http://hq.mcafeeasap.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=100561

for more info about the virus.

Anyone knows a way how to find the box where the virus e-mails (not the
error messages, the mails from the virus itself) come from? I would like
to inform the users of the infected machines, as these mails are annoying.

Please see bug 4862, I think it has been fixed sufficiently, I tested a

same behaviour on it I saw when doing the same things on 9.1.

Hi ,

1/ use acpi ( if not , delete acpi=off in your lilo.conf )
2/ add speedstep-centrino ( i think this , cause you have a pentium-M , if the
module failed try with speedstep-ich ) in /etc/modules
3/ reboot or modprobe speedstep-centrino
4/ then you can setup cpu performance with :

[Cooker] ALSA kernel try-to-fix

I tried removing patches MS24 through MS28 from the current kernel, and both
problems (snd-seq-midi missing, Quattro lockup) are still present. I tried
removing various other patches, and the kernel won't compile. It shouldn't be
hard to figure out why snd-seq-midi is missing though... I'd assume it's in
the huge Makefile patch, which totally messes with the makefile. Also I'm
guessing the Quattro problem is due to patch MS11, but the kernel won't
compile without it, so I can't test my idea.

like the installation program doesn't have enough resources and runs very very
slow! But it is also very hard to install Mandrake without mouse!

Although the worm flood is bothering enough, it is at least easily

[Cooker] Perl-Base / Postgresql-PL problem

2003-08-24 Thread Digital Wokan
Installing perl-5.8.1-0.RC4.2mdk.i586 requires removing
postgresql-pl-7.3.4-1mdk.i586 due to unsatisfied perl-base == 5.8.1

So I'm guessing RPM doesn't see perl-base-5.8.1-0.RC4.2mdk.i586 as
providing perl-base == 5.8.1 for some reason.

[Cooker] installation report beta2

2003-08-24 Thread Helge Hielscher
Hello,

although a bit late, here's my installation report:
-there was no minimal limit when resizing NTFS (but when using disdrake
there is), so I got unmontable_boot_volume when I started winxp
-even if you dont select any server software you get prompted: You have
selected the following servers: webmin, and no further explaination; how
should the user know what webmin is?
-the installer asks for graphical autologin before the X-Server is
configured
-when doing the network (lan) autoconfiguration it states: We are going
to configure your lan connection. Press forward to continue. but the
button is labelled next
-when configuring the bootloader you have the option to select ACPI and
APIC, but there's no help about what ACPI and APIC is

at my first installation I had some problems I couldnt reproduce:
-the XServer was not installed and when I tried to configure X I got:
server is not available (should be in /mnt/usr/X11R6/XFree86

first boot
-setprofile: setnetprofile failed

after first installation I tried to update to cooker and got
GPG#70771ff3 not ok

other points:
-K3B asks for eMovie at configuration, but there's no eMovie.rpm
-rpmdrake offers zope, but it requires phyton 2.2 (mandrake ships 2.3)

Thats all,
Regards,
Helge

The skin package was updated to include the Blue theme. But it's not
the default skin, as I haven't changed the default mplayer.conf. If
you think this is wrong, als the MPlayer developers at the
 mplayer-users list.

Ok so i recheck it. Maybe i have missed it and i will ask them to change
the default mplayer.conf to reflect their own decissions. Afzer all it
wouldn't have much affect on your package, so could you set blue as
default ? Its a lot nicer and has more functionality then the old
default skin.

I would further suggest to take out fullscreen and cache from the
default configuration, but we had this discussion allready ;)

Yes, I'm against that as I think the defaults from the MPlayer
 developers are reasonable.

Ok didn't get that it are defaults from mplayerhq

BTW orange and krystal is missing two in the skin package as far as
  I can see.

I don't want to include ALL skins available, but I could throw out
the more ugly ones to include the better looking skins. Please get
the latest mplayer-skins package and check it first.

Will do so, i just thought that it would be good to have the top three
ones from mplayerhq skin contest in the skin package.

BTW2: mjpegtools 1.6.2 will be released soon as far as i can tell.
I'M using the cvs version and can tell that it works really well.

Next week is a version freeze, so I guess it's too late :-( Maybe we
could make an exception, so could you please test all the apps that
 use mjpegtools?

The apps I use work unproblematic. Namely this are kimg2mpg and tosvcd.
If someone using transcode usually could test that .. but i wont touch
transcode as i don't know anything about transcode (have never used it)
. The only problematic things i have seen on mjpeg mailinglist is
compilation problems on altivec-code. The release is a minor release.
What make it so much better is, that you can choose now different
matrices (kvcd, tmpgenc, the standard ones and own load from a file).
For svcd creation this gives you a big quality boost as the bitrate
doesn't hit the maxbitrate so fast. A pitty that it comes so short
after version :(. What i can offer is to test the things i can test. So
if someone other then me can test transcode

The patch applies cleanly but the compilation bombs in one of the

For background, I am using kernel 2.6.0-test4 (works well for me btw).

When I connect to a site anonymously, cd works, but the ls command says it
completed but nothing appears in the terminal window and it does not accept
further commands. Ctrl-D and ctrl-D don't work either and it has to be killed
off by closing the terminal window. The same problem exists with gftp (I it uses
ftp under the bonnet).

The symptoms are similar to other kernel 2.6.x related bugs such as the one for
gnome-terminal (now sorted).

 Try:
 # mount -a

Doh!

Actually, autofs is a better solution for this in the end ... but I guess
small networks are too small for autofs.

Actually, I might not want to re-mount everything.

I find autofs a bit over the top (unless it is pre-configured in such a
way that makes configuration really easy). The last time I looked a
autofs, I ended up spending a few hours on reading the documentation and
configuration etc. Maybe it is easier now.

In the situation where there is an unplanned re-boot or a power failure
(without a UPS), one would expect the system to come up and mount
everything. A fix can't be that hard ;-)

Hi,

I have the same problem on my omnibook xe3, using mandrake 9.1.
The symptoms are:

1) boot ok. graphical login ok.
2) do whatever you want. everything works fine.
3) try crtl-alt-f*: the screen goes black
or
4) ctrl-alt-backspace: the screen goes black
or:
5) logout: the screen goes black.

I tried the rpms suggested in #2741, with no result.
I disabled all 3d stuff in XFree86-config-4, with no result.

An information that could be usefull, is that if from a terminal I try
'shutdown -h now', the screen goes black, but the HD continues working, and the
laptop turns off correctly (the same for 'shutdown -r now', with a correct
reboot). Actually this is the only way I could find to shut down cleanly the laptop.

Thanks a lot for any help/suggestion,

Andrea.

[Cooker] [Bug 4863] [kdepim-korganizer] konsolekalendar segfaults every time

2003-08-24 Thread [mpol]
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4863

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-24-08 14:25 ---

It's a bug in kdelibs, and happens with other software as well. I just posted a
bugreport on bugs.kde.org.
(bleh, I tried to change the product to kdelibs, but no workies, not allowed)

http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=63186

Contents of this bugreport:

When I run krename or kbarcode, I get a segfault caused by kdelibs. I use Kde
3.1.3-10mdk on Mandrake cooker (9.2-beta2/rc1).

I made a backtrace, which I hope gives enough info:

(gdb) run
Starting program: /usr/bin/krename

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

535if (option-name[0] == '+')
Current language:  auto; currently c++
(gdb) bt
#0  KCmdLineArgs::parseAllArgs() () at kcmdlineargs.cpp:535
(gdb) q
The program is running. Exit anyway? (y or n) y

[Cooker] [Bug 4862] [initscripts] running e2fsck on ext3 often results in dataloss

http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4862

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-24-08 00:28 ---
Danny, it seems much better on 9.2b2 than on 9.1, I had an automatic reboot

Or are you seeing worse behaviour on cooker?

(I couldn't find any changelog claiming credit for this apparent improvement, so
maybe I haven't been testing enough, maybe I should hard reset while installing
packages, running rsync, playing music, and compiling a kernel?).

destroying files
(somehow, it seems that it destroys more on ext3 than on ext2).
please:
- remove the message altogether from rc.sysinit for journalling fs (an expert can
still
do it manually, if for some reason it is wanted)
- make the check sound like a bad idea.

What I want to do :
Have an exhaustive list of all bugs I've contributed (even as commenter), for
any status. That's a minor change to default query My Bugs

What I do :
- in A comment : select contains all of the words/strings (personal
preference, not useful for this particular query
- in Status : select all (from unconfirmed to needinfo)
- in Email and numbering : click all, select contains (or is), enter (my
mail address)

I would expect to obtain bug 2178 and 4022 (I'm a commenter) : I don't get them.
I've tried to put my name, same result...

Another comment : the query_bug.cgi and show_bug.cgi pages are way too heavy
when entering bugs for products like galeon / lilo / galeon (over 500 KB !
thanksfully I've got ADSL but it may contribute to your poor server
performances...). Isn't there a way to cache the list of products or put this in
a file (relying on browser's cache) ?.

Same problem on Mandrake 9.2b2 with my Logitech QuickCam Pro 4000 which works
correctly with Mandrake 9.1
As soon as I plug it, reboot...

I have a reboot after insmod message error with 2.4.21.6mdk and a freeze with
2.4.21.6mdksmp. No problem when webcam isn't plugged and plugged after boot time.

The version in this kernel of pwc is 8.10 ... I make a test and there is no
problem with 8.11 (last version).

Thierry Saura.

When you are using supermount (default), there is no need to use Device
shortcut, make instead a url shortcut.

If you disable supermount for the device (you may have to reboot), then you can
mount and unmount (if you really want to).

Hi, original poster here:
The bug I reported was the one that OOo fixed in 1.0.3.1
Between 1.0.2 and 1.0.3 they introduced a bug with printing, and they
immediately released 1.0.3.1 to fix it. This happened a long time ago now...
so the problem has been fixed for a while.
See also the commend from Heinz Prommer above.

I am changing this bug to FIXED, since the bug in OOo is FIXED.

OOo crashes with a Segmentation fault (core dumped) message
when doing operations with the printer.

One way to reproduce with an empty document:
  1) Start oowriter
  2) Select File - Printer Settings
  3) Select PDF 1.4 Converter Press
  4) Press OK == OOo crashes.

Another way to make it crash is to actually trying to print (File-Print menu):
  1) Start oowriter
  2) Select File - Print
  3) Select PDF 1.4 Converter Press from list of printers
  4) Mark the Print to File box
  5) Enter a filename (test.pdf for instance)
  6) Click the OK button == OOo crashes.

My system is Cooker as of 2003-04-23, 01:30 GMT+1
It has cups-1.1.19-0.6mdk, cups-drivers-1.1-104mdk,
OpenOffice.org-1.0.3-1mdk.

These crashes did not happen with OOo 1.0.2, and with the other versions of the
other packages, whichever they were at the time.

The HP OfficeJet D135 and D145 are exactly the same hardware, only difference is
that under the D145 is a second paper tray. They return exactly the same ID
string when printerdrake or CUPS does an auto-detection request. The driver for
both is the same, too so you should be able to print, only selecting the lower
tray as paper source will be ignored (as long as you didn´t buy the second tray
separately).
