Is openbsd using bind9 yet? Or are they still on bind4? If they are
using bind9, I have my doubts that it's been audited... that's a lot
of code to audit so quickly, especially considering how long they left
 bind4 in there.

BIND 9.2.2

I aught to ask around.

On the sendmail side, I'm not sure. Is it up to date? We won't win any
friends by regressing to an older-but-openbsd-audited version.

Sendmail: version.m4,v 8.92.2.15 2003/03/19 21:19:52 ca Exp

Not that that is really important. But they also had to fix the recent
thing in sendmail. Though the default sendmail only listens on
localhosts so that's not a remote.

[Cooker] kde-3.2-alpha2 for test.

2003-09-26 Thread Laurent Montel
Hi,
I created all kde-3.2-alpha2 for MDK9.2 just for test.
For the moment MDK menu doesn't work.
I reapplyed 50 patchs from 400.
I will apply them after.

There is some update problem:
- kmail, knode, korn moved from kdenetwork to kdepim
- split is not again perfect (so report all split problem please)
- mdk menu not supported
- there is a problem with mandrake-galaxy program it frozes kwin (I don't
know why :( = I add a conflict and uninstall it please before to launch kde)

I ported galaxy theme to kwin 3.

MDK menu entry exists but they don't use by kde3.2

I compile all with --enable-debug=full = -g3

News in KDE 3.2 see http://developer.kde.org/development-versions/kde-3.2-
features.html

Big improvment of kmail/knodes
Support SVG format (static and dynamic SVG)
Add new program:
- kpdf = frontend to xpdf
- ksvg
- kontact see http://kontact.kde.org/
- kopete now it's into kdenetwork
- kwallet gestion of passwd

So report bugs found please.
KDE config bugs please (config upgrade) etc.

Regards.

For the moment this packages is not into cooker, so you can download it from
http://peoples.mandrakesoft.com/~lmontel/kde-3.2-alpha2/

PS: save your config file
PS2: save your mail

BECAREFULL it's package for test .

One of the reasons the update took so long is that they are auditing the
code *grin* I checked 3.2 OpenBSD and it does run 9.21 I'm told that
the do do a legit cheat when auditing. They first recheck the code
that didn't change and then repair. Then audit what is left. However I
don't know enough about the process there to comment beyond this.

Hmmm.. that sounds interesting. I wonder if the bind folks know about
this... I'm sure it would be nice to have whatever fixes are commited to
openbsd-cvs put back into bind itself.

Vincent Danen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Of course, I still don't get why we're jumping all over proftpd. It
isn't really *that* insecure. As I pointed out to Han regarding wu-
ftpd, proftpd is in a similar boat. There is this hole, which should
be available in updates RSN, but the last one was in Jan 2002... over
a year and a half ago. Again, comparing to sendmail, this sucker is
pretty secure. Heck, compare it to openssh! How many updates for
openssh have there been in the same timespan?

We can't just throw stuff out the window because it has a hole today
and has had one over a year or two years ago. That's just silly. Why
aren't we jumping up and down about ditching php? Or apache? Or cups?
Or XFree86? Or bind? Or openldap? The list goes on. All of those have
been updated within the last 1-2 years as well, some many many times.

It's also about the magnitude of the hole. How big are the chances they
will be found again. The recent ssh-hole was technically speaking a
remote crash, not nice but nothing dramatic. You still have to patch it
but that's something I can live with.
On the other hand a remote root is a remote root and that is something
I really would like to avoid.

Once more. The size of the hole is more important than how often people
require you to patch.

[Cooker] How to write a Mandrake HOWTO ?

2003-09-26 Thread Svetoslav Slavtchev
Hi,
i have in mind to write a simplified mandrake HOWTO
on my beloved thema multi user
so i wanted to ask whether there are some
specifications, docbook xml templates specific
to a Mandrake HOWTO

for simplication it will be only for dual-user,
the major points will probably be:

* configure XFree to use Xinerama using XFdrake
* add two independent layouts for both cards
* install the XFree kernel rpms from http://...
* configure display manager
* reboot  enjoy

* doesn't work? or need more tweaks, more users
 - check the big HOWTO @ tldp.org

Hi,

I guess your python-numeric wasn't updated. Do you still have
 /usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/Numeric/_numpy.so instead of
/usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages/Numeric/_numpy.so ?

I will add a conflict with kdemoreartwork-plastik

So as you can see, I ended up forcing them on. It did boot i to kde
(cool splash screen btw :D ), I had a panel and complete desktop
(minus wallpaper), but the most noticable problem was that the mouse
and keyboard were not responsive. So wasn't able to test much. :P I
had rm .kde prior to startx.

after sending original note to list, I then went back and rpm -Uvh
 kdebase-3.1.92-2mdk.i586 kdegraphics-3.1.92-3mdk.i586

the kdenetwork conflicted with kdenetwork-kmail knode

It's right a problem, I forgot to add %version-%release.

 the libkdemultimedia1-noatun-devel-3.1.3-16mdk.i586 didn't go either.

I didn't observe any changes tho.

I originally tried to urpme the old kde packages, but it wanted to
take out so much other stuff that I just urpmi'd it. I hope this is
some help. I'll install a clean cooker system later today minus kde
 for your next round.

Thanks for your report.

Please read previous reply. I thought it might be more important to get
builds of samba3 for multiple distros out on the samba FTP mirrors, but
maybe next time I should rather not do that and fix silly little things
like this in the spec file (which take care of themself anyway).

been updated within the last 1-2 years as well, some many many times.

It's also about the magnitude of the hole. How big are the chances they

but that's something I can live with.
On the other hand a remote root is a remote root and that is something
I really would like to avoid.

Once more. The size of the hole is more important than how often people
 require you to patch.

Well, then by it's history over the past year, sendmail should be the
first kicked out the distro (3 potential remote root vulnerabilities
plus another 2 DOS vulnerabilities). And I don't think there is much
reason feature-wise to choose sendmail over postfix.

I think second on the list would be samba, but I don't suppose anyone is
going to propose a replacement ... (no, samba-tng doesn't count ...).

BTW, a lot of the issues could be resolved if there were a standard
mechanism for contrib updates. Vince, I think this was about the time

Yes, this is the job of drakconnect (to ensure that whatever the user
chooses, they have working name resolution etc).

We don't let user choose hostname randomly in DHCP mode.

Damien, can you please discuss with us the exact design spec for
drakconnect, so that the issue is fixed for 10.0?

rant
At present, drakconnect makes it excessively easy to stuff up a network
configuration. If the user uses no advanced buttons, they end up with:

1)Hostname = localhost
(I have already mentioned why this is idiotic, you haven't answered why
you think it is a good idea for all the daemons to be using localhost
as their hostname, why samba, postfix and cups should be broken
out-the-box due to this)

2)tmdns advertising a hostname which the rest of the system doesn't know
about

3)In networks with DDNS, the wrong hostname is used, and the DHCP server
won't setup DNS entries for the machine.

In short, the current handling of drakconnect is useless for any
business network (I can't judge it on DSL etc).

Please, stop breaking other packages. Maybe in future I will make the
default netbios name drakconnectsux so at least Windows machines can
connect to a Mandrake machine via samba out-the-box. It's easier and
more maintainable than fixing the same issue the way Till fixed CUPS.

A better draksound : I proposed already an automatic serial test of OSS
and ALSA drivers.

Drakxservices : sort them by themes, and add more precise help to
indicate when it is necessary (basic, networking, file monitoring,
etc...) and warning about how safe it can be

A better access to source management : integrate urpmi.setup in the
software manager, probably by merging it with the source update. Make an
automatic (but optional) update of the sources when you want to install
a package and it fails because urpmi detects the source is outdated, and
also using anacron (for example).

Other ideas will come with time :)

Re: [Cooker] [Mandrake 10] An Idea for next MDK 10...

2003-09-26 Thread Luca Landi
Sorry... I was just talking about the future features the next version
should have had in my opinion...

I know that most of my advises are not involved to your work.
I hope a part of them will be realized by developers, so MDK will be able to
integrate them in the next release.

Best regards,
Luca

.. my personal guess for new Mandrake 10 (or 9.3?!?!)...

  - GCC 3.3.2 or better GCC 3.4.x
  - Linux Kernel 2.6.x
  - New KDE 3.2.x
  - New Lib QT 3.2.x
  - improved ACPI support! (Now is very bad!)

Um. MDK doesn't write acpi support. acpi4linux write that. MDK just
patch it into the kernel. We already use their latest code, there's
 nothing else we can do.

  - improved Notebook/Laptop support with hibernate/suspend native
support
(for me is very very important!!!)

Again. Out of MDK's hands. We already have the best support available -
latest APM, ACPI and pmsuspend code.

  - Support for new PCI-X bus
  - improved support for USB-2
  - improved support for S-ATA 1 and S-ATA 2 (with hardware RAID
support)!!!

Nothing to do with MDK. This is kernel code.

  - Special support for new CPU: Amd-K8, Amd-Athlon64, Amd Athlon64FX,
Intel
Centrino, new evolutions of Intel P4?!?

There's already an AMD64 Cooker branch. Check the mirrors. What special
support would you need for Centrino? Centrino is marketing hype, it's
the the Pentium-M processor, which is perfectly well supported already.
What special support would future revisions of the P4 need?

  - Special Kernel support for HyperTrading Tecnology.???

Um. HT is already perfectly well supported in the kernel, has been for
 ages.

  - New Samba 3!! See: http://de.samba.org/samba/whatsnew/samba-3.0.0.html
(24
  September 2003)

 Already in contrib.

  - Kdevelop 3.0
  - Gnome 2.3.x or if available... 2.4

 Already in 9.2.

  - Mplayer 1.x

 Already in contrib.

  - Mozilla 1.5

Will be coming as soon as we unfreeze, I expect. Fred's fast.

  - improved support for new Graphics Card. (see new ATI (and IGP),
  S3-Via, GeForce4/5)

 Not MDK's code. That's XFree's job.

  - Gimp 1.3.20 See: http://www.gnome.org/~drc/gimp-rpms/

 Already in.

snip more pointless lists of new releases which will of course be
included - look, all this stuff is already in Mandrake. OF COURSE 9.3 /
10 will have the new versions of it, what do you expect, no updates?
This email was practically pointless. Honestly.

My 2 øre for mdk 10:

better drakbakup support (it has already be greatly improved), including
wizard setup for automatic backup (to disk)

better ntp support, configurable out of mcc

better setup for terminal-server, and this setup included in mcc
pxe supported directly with terminal-server.

configurability of a contrib source out of postinstall in DrakX

installing out of a disk .img with all boot facilities as a standard
install way.

integration of spamassassin with postfix

possiblity to nuke files with standard virus extension in postfix (.exe,
.pif..)

Some more security features that are easy to set up for novices, with a
home LAN. This could include enhanced visibility and ease of configuring
backup and security patches, in post-install mode of drakx and mcc.

harmonization of drakx and mcc - using the same wizards etc.

I somehow misread this for plf :-)

Which leads me to another problem: backported packages: Projects like
plf sometimes need to backport cooker or contrib packages to the
stable distribution. This can lead to problems when upgrading to the
next stable distribution, when the release number of the package
didn't change. Here's an example:

- install foobar-1.2-3mdk backported from cooker to Mandrake
9.1, obviously based on libbaz2.
- upgrade the distribution to 9.2. 9.2 has libbaz3 and
foobar-1.2.3mdk based on libbaz3
- as the version and release numbers stay the same, the foobar package
doesn't get updated to the version linked against libbaz3

It would be nice if packages would include an implicit epoch tag, so a
package build on 9.2 will always be newer than one for 9.1 with the
same version and release tags.

Yeah. I can't start a terminal because there is no menu entry for a
 terminal. Since I can't start a terminal to get a CLI, I can't start a
 terminal from the CLI.

No menu entry for rxvt and no menu entry in fluxbox menus for konsole.

Does fluxbox not have a run dialog then? Even without a menu entry for
a terminal, a run dialog should be usable to start one -- unless of course
you don't know the actual command name, but anyone that actually misses a
terminal should be able to figure /that/ out. Of course, no run dialog
and..

Or.. start up a file browser and launch it by clicking on the file there..
Or.. start up Konqueror and use the launch terminal command there, or
activate its builtin terminal pane, or use its shell command function
(basically a run dialog). Of course, if the konsole entry is missing,
kdebase-konsole may not be installed, and I'm not sure if those entries
will work. Still, the shell command function should.

Someone mentioned mcc/drakconf still has a shell function.. Of course,
that does require root..

I'm sure there are probably many other apps that can launch either a shell
directly, or a run dialog from which one can be launched. As I was just
reading in the sudo documentation the other day, it can be difficult to
restrict a user who want to launch a shell from doing so, unless you
restrict him from running all the various apps that have that
functionality as well.

Oh.. another one.. menudrake.. then create your menu entry, and run it..
assuming of course that IT'S in the menu (and that fluxbox uses the Mdk
menu system, but I'd guess it does).

Re: [Cooker] How to write a Mandrake HOWTO ?

2003-09-26 Thread Austin
Yes, there is a big problem with writing docs now that Mandrake is more
community-based... as GC and I discussed a month or two ago.

Old corporate style is official and looks nice (use XML-related format or
whatever), and can be edited with your favorite editor, but can't be
transferred easily to the wiki, where most docs should reside IMHO. At the
very least, it draws people to the wiki.

New community style is to write the doc on the wiki. Problem is editing a
large document in a web browser, no syntax highlighting, etc. Does anyone
know of an editor for wiki markup? Also, the document is then not easily
published elsewhere. Is there an easy way to convert wiki markup to pure
HTML, or PDF, or some other publishing format?

This is something that should be sorted out, as doc writing is an amazing
source of free labour, and allows not-so-technical people to help out too.

Hmmm, this is a neat idea. At present, any mdk rpm you grab off the net, you
have no idea what mandrake release it is built for.

Would that work, having epoch: 9.2 in every package? We use epoch so rarely
that it might be okay, and we could use 9.2.1 if we REALLY needed a new epoch,
right?

Of course this would require a total rebuild of the distro, edited by hand...
no small task. Maybe this could be done at the same time that we switch to a
full-distro rebuild robot that would force everyone to fix their buildrequires
(me especially).

The postinstall script of fontconfig has this:
postinstall scriptlet (using /bin/sh):
/usr/bin/fc-cache -f /dev/null

I'm sure there's also some script that starts fontconfig for the user, maybe an
X startup script?

Even DrakConf had ugly fonts.

Long story short. I deleted all the ~/.font* files and I ran fc-cache as a
normal user, and I fixed most of the problems. Except for DrakConf, that is
ran as root. Then I deleted /root/.font* and run fc-cache as root and now
everything is ok. It looks like I had some old crap in these files ruining
my xfs behavior.

Shouldn't this processed be done automatically by some postinstall script
after installing fontconfig, a new Xserver o new fonts ?

Also, there was a problem with KDE previews a month ago or so, that was solved
by running fc-cache as root. fc-cache runs very fast, so it's not an issue to
include it in post-install scripts IMHO ...

If you're using Twiki, they have a publishing plugin that
converts an entire wiki to interlinked static HTML files. It
looks better and needs a lot less work and server load than
trying something with wget. I have it set up on the wiki for
Gambas to generate once a day (since the Gambas wiki has kinda
gotten a little complicated to do it on demand.) See the front
page of http://www.binara.com/gambas-wiki/ for a link to the
static version, and www.twiki.org (uh, somewhere within it...
the whole thing's a wiki) for the plugin.

I haven't figured out a way to convert to PDF *usefully*, but the
quick and dirty method would be to take the static files
generated by the above method and oowriter --print them to a pdf
file. I don't think that would look very good though.

Despite this shortcoming, I think wikis are the way to go for
community based documentation as long as someone sets up a
document hierarchy when the wiki's put in place (in Gambas'
case, I converted some documentation in a SXW file and wrote a
program to pull class documentation out of the IDE, but people
are free to add stuff outside those initial structures as well.)

i think i read smth about a wiki that supports docbook xml,
(but i can not find the mail right now,
and the [EMAIL PROTECTED] ml server gives error on searching :( )

from docbook xml you can really easy create pdf, html,
for dynamic conversation apache + cocoon is a good solution i think
(at least for smaller documents, with my ~100page howto is a bit of pain)
see

http://www.xml-dev.com:8080/cocoon/mount/docbook/linux-faq.html
http://www.xml-dev.com:8080/cocoon/mount/docbook/Apache-WebDAV-LDAP-HOWTO.html
for pdf just replace the .html extension with .pdf

BTW, why not putting what is not working correctly on a wiki page : it
seems to me that this versioning problem is just a part of the iceberg,
so like this everyone can complain, and a better solution can come from
having a better view of common/concurrent problems for urpmi.

For example in the specific case cited above, it shows the limiting
numbering philosophy OR may be one rule could be applied : when two
packages have the same name, only the main one should be used.

This leads to the second question : why is this happening, should all
contrib packages named as it (ctb instead of mdk for example, like plf
...) or another info in the package itself.

Or : since the package can be buitl with version 2 and 3, any indication
of this ...

Just some thoughts ...

Personally, if pure-ftpd can't authenticate against LDAP (like proftpd
can), I'm not overly interested. =) proftpd may have some issues
periodically, but you can't beat it for configurability.

Here is only a small portion of the features. I did not do the whole thing as
it is much longer than this list.

- FTP accounts can be distinct from system accounts, stored in an independant
database. Multiple accounts can share the same system id. A built-in indexing
database allows very fast lookups. It is sucessfully running with over 1.5
million accounts on the same server. System accounts can be copied to virtual
FTP accounts, so that users can have different passwords for shell access and
FTP access.

- LDAP authentication is also fully supported. Plaintext, Crypt, MD5, SMD5,
SHA and SSHA crypto hash functions are implemented. Pure-FTPd was
successfully tested with OpenLDAP and iPlanet Directory Server. It uses
standard posixAccounts classes.

- Built-in secure cryptographic hashes (SMD5, SSHA) can be used with any LDAP
server, even those that are lacking support for these hashes.

- User info can also be centralized in MySQL databases, with or without
transactions. All queries are fully customizable, and requests can be built
with user names, remote client addresses, local IP addresses and ports. That
way, complex hosting rules can be easily implemented, even with multiple
virtual servers on the same host, and multiple virtual domains with many
users.

- Multiple authentication methods can be chained in any order. For instance,
SQL accounts, LDAP directories and system accounts can be used at the same
time.

- Custom authentication methods can easily be added. Pure-FTPd supports
external authentication modules, and writing a new backend can be as simple
as a few lines of shell script.

- Pure-FTPd supports a virtual quota system : accounts can have individual
quota (max number of files, max total size) even when they share the same
system uid.

- Bandwidth throttling is supported, with distinct settings for upload and
download.

- Every user can be assigned individual quota, ratio and bandwidth.

- Every user can be allowed to connect only from a specific range on IP
address, or only to its own virtual host.

- Every user can be individually restricted to his home directory or not.

- Every user can be allowed to connect only during configured time-ranges
(e.g. only during business hours).

[Cooker] [Bug 5977] [fontconfig] font cache files need to be removed and fc-cache run for each user

It is not needed, fontconfig apps dynamically update their own cache (as user)
if they are not consistent. And each time new fonts are added by a package,
fc-cache is called on the system.

just a little improvement for laptop owners with pcmcia network device :

when drackconnect configure the network interface, it generate the network init
startup script before the pcmcia configuration device one. It was the same in
previous Mandrake versions. It causes the internet connection to be inactive at
startup.

Personnaly i modified the startup scripts order by hand in '/etc/rc.d/rc5.d/'
but i think it could be a small job for a good improvement (mostly for newbies).

Hmmm, this is a neat idea. At present, any mdk rpm you grab off the
net, you have no idea what mandrake release it is built for.

At one stage, I had:
%distribution Mandrake Linux %distro_rel

(and a bit before it - which is still there since I use it in other
macros - :
%distro_rel %(awk '{print $4}' /etc/mandrake-release)
)

But rpmlint doesn't like this.

Would that work, having epoch: 9.2 in every package? We use epoch so
rarely that it might be okay, and we could use 9.2.1 if we REALLY
 needed a new epoch, right?

Of course this would require a total rebuild of the distro, edited by
hand... no small task. Maybe this could be done at the same time that
we switch to a full-distro rebuild robot that would force everyone to
 fix their buildrequires (me especially).

I don't know if automatic rebuilds can easily (and reliably) change
version numbers or release numbers. Epoch numbers would have to be
evaluated at build time, adding the packages own Epoch number, without
having a recursive macro (which rpm doesn't like).

For the meantime, decrementing the release number by decimals may be a
better idea.

BTW, I actually need a solution for this too. At present, all samba
builds from the source release get identical %{version}-%{release} which
is probably a bad thing ...

Buchan

If you're using Twiki, they have a publishing plugin that
converts an entire wiki to interlinked static HTML files. It
looks better and needs a lot less work and server load than
trying something with wget. I have it set up on the wiki for
Gambas to generate once a day (since the Gambas wiki has kinda
gotten a little complicated to do it on demand.) See the front

Speaking of gambas, why isn't it in contrib yet? (I had meant to try and
work on this, but ran out of time ...).

I haven't figured out a way to convert to PDF *usefully*, but the
quick and dirty method would be to take the static files
generated by the above method and oowriter --print them to a pdf
file. I don't think that would look very good though.

htmldoc may be better for this specific case.

There are two perl tools, wt2db and db2omf that could theoretically be
useful, but they don't seem to generate anything useful from the twiki
stuff I tried.

http://tldp.org/wt2db/
http://tldp.org/db2omf/

BTW, the issue isn't only generating documentation, but also ensuring
that it is easy to access (and I mean easier to access than the HTML
HOWTOs etc). That's where db2omf would come in, and should allow
searching and display with yelp and khelpcenter.

from docbook xml you can really easy create pdf, html,
for dynamic conversation apache + cocoon is a good solution i think
(at least for smaller documents, with my ~100page howto is a bit of pain)
 see

The other issue is maybe conglomerate is about ready for use for
large-scale editing of docbook? It would just need use to have some
versioning system (which the wiki currently provides).

Buchan

be available in updates RSN, but the last one was in Jan 2002... over
a year and a half ago. Again, comparing to sendmail, this sucker is
pretty secure. Heck, compare it to openssh! How many updates for
openssh have there been in the same timespan?

We can't just throw stuff out the window because it has a hole today
and has had one over a year or two years ago. That's just silly. Why
aren't we jumping up and down about ditching php? Or apache? Or cups?
Or XFree86? Or bind? Or openldap? The list goes on. All of those have
been updated within the last 1-2 years as well, some many many times.

It's also about the magnitude of the hole. How big are the chances they
will be found again. The recent ssh-hole was technically speaking a
remote crash, not nice but nothing dramatic. You still have to patch it
but that's something I can live with.
On the other hand a remote root is a remote root and that is something
I really would like to avoid.

Once more. The size of the hole is more important than how often people
 require you to patch.

Very true. But every openssh vuln hasn't been a crash or DoS. Mind you,
with openssh a DoS is bad enough. Need to remote admin servers? What
happens if the server goes down and you're stuck driving a long time to get
to the machine? (It's happened).

A DoS in apache is one thing... ssh in and restart. A DoS in ssh is
another... how do you ssh in to fix it if ssh doesn't work?

So don't think of it in technical terms... put it in real-world situations
and then re-evaluate how bad the problem is.

Well, then by it's history over the past year, sendmail should be the

reason feature-wise to choose sendmail over postfix.

I think second on the list would be samba, but I don't suppose anyone is
 going to propose a replacement ... (no, samba-tng doesn't count ...).

BTW, a lot of the issues could be resolved if there were a standard
mechanism for contrib updates. Vince, I think this was about the time
you said we could start discussing it?

Ugh. Ok, yes, it needs to be dealt with. I'm just not sure of the best way
to handle it. Does klama have chroots for older versions? I'd think for
contribs, you only really need to worry about the last one, maybe two,
versions. Ie. right now, contribs updates should be limited to 9.2,
possibly 9.1.

I do not want contribs in the official updates tree. No discussion on that.
It will give the false illusion that contribs is supported, and updates to
contribs will be entirely user-driven.

So we can either make a new tree for the mirrors for contribs (I wouldn't be
adverse to a updates/contribs/[arch]/[ver], but that would preclude me
getting involved to some degree.

In my mind, the best solution is to put updates in Club. That way they make
it to the Club mirrors and everyone can take advantage of them since
non-Club members can also access them. That would be my best solution and
my preference. Then I don't have to get involved at all.

  .pif..)

Start doing what I'm doing for updates.

If you backport 1.2-3mdk from cooker (and we'll asusme 1.2-2mdk or lower is
in 9.2), drop the version to 1.2-2.1mdk or, what I'm starting to do,
something like 1.2-2.1.92mdk.

This then makes it implicit for 9.2, the version is dropped so it's higher
than what is in 9.2 (2mdk) but lower than what is currently in cooker
(3mdk).

[Cooker] [Mandrake 10] more ideas for next MDK

2003-09-26 Thread Diego Iastrubni
I always see Mandrake as a desktop distro, so my wishes are from that side.

mcc:
* bring back capabilities for changing the lilo/grub theme
* real support for linmodems (even if the drivers will not be on the d/l
edition)
* in 8.2 it had themes, where did they go?
* lirc mcc module

mdk-kdm:
* if could not bring X up, write a messages in console like gdm does
* full screen greeter (again gdm like)
* if no key pressed in X secs, log in as ... (again from gdm)
* avility to run some program for changing the background (roottv for example)

misc:
* add the mouse cursors packages to main
* l10n for Mozilla
* l10n for OO.org
* bring FireBird to main instead of Mozilla
* use also apt-get (with the same repositories, IMHO this can be done no?),
let the user which app use to install rpms.
* bring sim to main
* patch wine to be able to use mono's winforms
* mono in mdk out of the box! (if sharp develop will run on mono bring it on
baby!)

IMHO gcc and glibc can stay at thecurrent version, unless the bugs in gcc
will be fixed and glibc will not break anything like 2.3 did :)

Well, let's put it this way. For about 2 years now I've wanted sendmail in

very nice exim packages on rpmhelp.net and exim is a really nice MTA.

Not that this is a plug to put exim in main (doesn't matter to me... it's

Hmmm, this is a neat idea. At present, any mdk rpm you grab off the
net, you have no idea what mandrake release it is built for.

 At one stage, I had:
 %distribution Mandrake Linux %distro_rel

(and a bit before it - which is still there since I use it in other
 macros - :
 %distro_rel %(awk '{print $4}' /etc/mandrake-release)
 )

%define version 3.0
%define release 1
%define distro 92

Version: %version
Release: %release.%distromdk

so you end up with 3.0-1.92mdk

umm.. untested. =) But you get the idea.

I disagree. A lot of nice network-type software would be missing and I
sure as heck don't want them all in main. What's wrong with having
them in contribs? They aren't officially maintained... so what? Having
them in contribs, joe sysadmin can grab the src.rpm for what he has
installed, grab the new version or patch, and roll his own. It's still
convenient for him to have it in contribs even if he doesn't get it
   via MandrakeUpdate.

I does make sense if we have a note attached on them they can pose a
security risk and if people use them they should take care they are up
to date. Some sort of mechanism that keeps people informed about
updates. For example xmule which was found to be exploitable
recently. I expect more troubles from that program. A simple warning

  solution to this problem?

Hmmm... didn't see this one. I've got a solution. Subscribe to
full-disclosure. You'll see what other vendors are putting out and you'll
be able to see what needs fixing.

Actually, there is no point just explaining servers in contrib are not
updated. A real explanation of mandrake policy would be far better:
 - what is main, what is contrib, and what is update ?
 - what does get updated ?
 etc...

Good grief.. everyone wants policy policy policy... =)

Main is what is in the main tree. You know, what comes in the download
edition. The stuff that is labelled not contribs. The meat of the
distro. The equivilant of Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS

Contribs is contribs. It's labelled as such.

updates? Should be pretty obvious. Updates are stuff in main that need
fixing for whatever reason.

Main gets updated. contribs doesn't.

I don't see what is so difficult about this. This is how it has *always*
been. It hasn't changed. No need for a policy regarding it. This is just
how it's done.

I already appreciated the CPU acpi management.

I wish you some courage for this _very_ expected functionnality.
