[Cooker] ctrl+alt+backspace shuts PC down.
I recently installed 9.0 on a friends PC. After reconfiguring the mouse (to enable the wheel), I needed to restart X. When I pressed ctrl+alt+backspace, the system immediatly turned off. I am not sure what the exact specs are on the PC, but I believe it is a P4 2Ghz, 512mb ram, and an nvidia based graphics card with the default driver. [Cooker] Accessing removable media in KDE
When I attempt to access my cdrom or internal zip when there is no media in the drive (by clicking on the icon on the KDE desktop), I get a dialog box that says that I do not have access rights to /mnt/cdrom (or /mnt/zip or /mnt/cdrom2). [Cooker] A "ls /mnt/cdrom" takes forever
After installing 9.0beta1, performing a "ls /mnt/cdrom" without a disk in the cdrom takes a long time (about a minute) to fail. I first noticed this with rpmdrake, which takes several minutes to start while it checks for a disk in the cdrom. Placing a CDROM in the drive prevents this problem. The drive is a CD-RW CRX120E (Sony) which is treated as an IDE-SCSI device. -- Joe

[Cooker] KDE 3.01 Feedback...
So far my experience with KDE 3.01 has been very good. I have been running it for several weeks, and I have found it very stable, with the exception of a few problems: (mostly kdevelop related) kdevelop needs kdbg? I made a single line change to the .spec file to remove the requirement and rebuilt. It seems to work fine without it. Where is the developer documentation for kdelibs? kdelibs-devel-2.2.2 contained all the documentation for the libs, it doesn't seem to be there any more. "kdevelop --setup" looks for "designer" not designer-qt3. Therefore, it doesn't think that qt3 designer exists. (an strace indicated this) the messages window in kdevelop doesn't seem to like the output from gcc as it doesn't recognize newlines. Konqueror doesn't seem to handle http://www.pricewatch.com very well. It starts to show the whole page, but as soon as it loads, it changes and just shows the "System Memory Links" page. mozilla-1.0-0.rc2.2mdk displays the website without problems Here are the packages I currently have installed. kdebase-3.0.1-14mdk kdemultimedia-3.0.1-5mdk kdebase-devel-3.0.1-14mdk kdesdk-devel-3.0.1-6mdk kdelibs-devel-3.0.1-10mdk kdevelop-2.1.1-5mdk kdeadmin-3.0.1-4mdk kdeartwork-3.0.1-3mdk kdev_htdig-1.1-2mdk kdetoys-devel-3.0.1-4mdk kdeutils-devel-3.0.1-5mdk kdesdk-3.0.1-6mdk kdegraphics-3.0.1-7mdk kdegraphics-devel-3.0.1-7mdk kdelibs-3.0.1-10mdk kdenetwork-3.0.1-4mdk kdeutils-3.0.1-5mdk kdeaddons-3.0.1-5mdk kdetoys-3.0.1-4mdk libarts-1.0.1-11mdk arts-1.0.1-11mdk libarts-devel-1.0.1-11mdk libqt3-devel-3.0.4-3mdk libqt3-3.0.4-3mdk -- Joe

I keep getting a Oops from Kernel 2.4.18-16mdk whenever msec_find runs (~4am daily). It occurs in scan_dir_for_removable() in linux/fs/devfs/base.c.I believe it has has something to do with my atapi zip being configured as an ide-scsi. Re: [Cooker] Kernel problem in devfs
I am seeing this same exact problem. I have an IDE ZIP that is supermounted, and about once a day (when msec_find runs), I get an Oops in scan_dir_for_removeable(). I placed some code in the function that prints out dir->name. It appears the Oops occurs when attempting to access /dev/host1/bus0/target0/lun0, which is my zip drive. I have since patched a stock kernel (2.4.18) with supermount, and this has worked flawlessly for over a week. -- Joe On Fri, 2002-04-12 at 13:59, Alan wrote: > On Friday 12 April 2002 10:50 am, Borsenkow Andrej wrote: > > ÷ ðÔÎ, 12.04.2002, × 21:30, Alan ÎÁÐÉÓÁÌ: > > > This is pretty nasty. > > > > > > This is using the stock kernel from Mandrake 8.2. I have been seeing a similar thing, I get an Oops at 4:04am every day. I think it may be related to /dev/sdb which is an ATAPI ZIP 100. I also want to add that I am also running a stock 2.4.18pre9 + O(1) + Preemption patches. With this,I can run pppd without crashing my system. -Joe On Mon, 2002-03-11 at 19:25, Joseph Davidson wrote: > I have an Agenda VR3 that I am connecting to and exporting the display > to my PC (8.2 beta 4 just installed - Kernel is 2.4.18-2mdk). [Cooker] Oops with ppp over serial?
I have an Agenda VR3 that I am connecting to and exporting the display to my PC (8.2 beta 4 just installed - Kernel is 2.4.18-2mdk). This will work fine for a while, but when I open Konqueror, or let Evolution check mail. Occasionally, I will get strange lock ups, and my PC has even spontaniously restarted several times. In my /var/log/messages I find several Oops's. (see below). Normally, when I am NOT connected to the VR3, the system has been extremely stable. This problem was also present using beta 3. Here is the output of an "lcpscidrake -v". And yes, the OSS driver is es1370.
(see attatched). Normally, when I am NOT connected to the VR3, the system has been extremely stable. This problem was also present using beta 3. In order to connect to the VR3, I use the following command: /usr/sbin/pppd /dev/ttyS1 10.1.1.1:10.1.1.2 noauth nodetach debug 115200 local My main Internet connection is through an Intel EtherExpress PRO/100+, which is configured for DHCP, and is connect to a LinkSys DSL router. [Cooker] Beta 4 install
The beta 4 install went almost perfectly, however when I got to the end of the setup it was claiming it could not find a soundcard. However, when I restarted my PC, the correct Alsa drivers were loaded and sound worked. I have an es1370. On the subject of alsa drivers, I have noticed that the sound in Return to Castle Wolfenstien single player occasionally skips during the animations, and doesn't seem to work at all during the intro. Switching to the OSS drivers for my sound card cleared this up. (I also disable arts before starting the game) I have also noticed that /usr/bin/artswrapper is not installed suid, so arts complains it can't run with real-time priority. Is this intentional?
Re: [Cooker] qt designer in beta 2?
I installed qt2-designer 2.3.1-24mdk from cooker, however, kdevelop 2.0.2-7mdk expects qt-designer to be named "designer", and not designer-qt2. A simple symlink fixes this, but shouldn't qt designer be installed with this name (or at least a symlink?), or should kdevelop look for qt2-designer? Is qt-designer is beta 2? I can get it from cooker, however, it doesn't appear to be on any of the CD's. -Joe
[Cooker] Beta 2 Report....
For the most part installing worked flawlessly, however, I have a few issues. 1) Is there a reson that kdeutils and kdevelop rely on efax? Attempting to delselect efax during the install told me that both kdeutils and kdevelop would also be unselected. 2) The first time I booted, my home directory could not be mounted. (/boot mounted at /dev/hdb1, / mounted at /dev/hdb2, and /home mounted at /dev/hdb6) Upon further investigation, I found that the partition table had become corrupt. fdisk printed this warning: "Invalid flag 0x of partition table 5 will b corrected by w(rite)." During the install, I did not create or destroy an partitions, just changed the format of /dev/hdb2 to reiserfs, and /dev/hdb6 to xfs. (both were ext3 prior to that). 3) My USB mouse stops working in X after a resume. I have found that switching to virtual terminal, and then switching back to X fixes the mouse. I have since enabled the CHANGEVT="7" in the /etc/sysconfig/apmd file and this seems to work. Joe.
