[Cooker] Cooker installation and bugs report
Hi all, This my report after a fresh install in pcmcia+nfs mode of cooker (package of 27/09) and update (package of 28/9) on an HP 4150 laptop. First impressions - GREAT, I'm very glad to see how the linux-mandrake distro has been improved : wheel mouse detect and configured, pcmcia network start correctly, framebuffer are automatically installed, modem setting ... and so on. The install : --- 1/ During the install, at he network modem setting, i switch to console with Alt-F[1-5], because i doesn't known where the kernel find my modem (ttyS" or ttyS4), and when i go back to the installer by Alt-F7, the install crash with a message: install exited abnormally reboot... I need to boot again go to the rescue mode to finish install with some difficulties : i need to mount by hand my partition and some step are bypassed. The bugs: 2/ Sometimes XFree 4.01 have a fading problem : console are fader and the kdm screen have loose some color. I need to swith between X and the console to get the right color. This bug reproduce after logout kde or gnome session because X restart. My chipset is a neomagic. 3/ Sawfish crash with the Xinerama error for me too 4/ LinuxConf doesn't start from DrakConf. Process are here, but no window comes. It start normally from an xterm, but crash if i select "networking" then on the new window if i select another setting. The error is : "Error message from remadmin : X Error of failed request: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)" Then i need to type CTRL-C to stop linuxconf. 5/ Configure screensaver under Kcontrol crash with the signall 11 error. KDE bug ? 6/ I have some pb to configure my soundcard. Harddrake detect it has an magic media 256 av (this is true). Hardrake try to install the nm256 module, but it failed with the traditionnal ressource or device busy. Sndconfig detect it too and say that it doesn't support it. Because this card work fine in WSS or SB emulation, i'm unable to configure it with hardrake or sndconfig in this mode. I need to grab an old sndconfig say 0.35 to configure it has an WSS card. 7/ My laptop have a removable drive bay to insert floppy or cd-rom. When my laptop is docked, the floppy work fine on the parallele port but failed when i put it into the bay. I can't access it and the command mount never stop and i'm unabble to kill it. If the laptop is undocked, the floppy work fine in the drive bay. 8/ I have sound working expected with kde. It seems that arts, the kde audio server, grab /dev/dsp and doesn't work. Never kde native sound work, sow or over complain that /dev/dsp is busy. I need to kill arts to play with the sound. Esd work fine, gnome too. 9/ Kudzu is not compatible with Aurora. When i remove my cdrom, kudzu detect it, but it can't open a screen and output characters to aurora and failed after the timeout. 10/ file auto.master reference a file named /etc/auto.net that doesn't exist. 11/ My laptop doesn't power down when i shutdown. Need '-p' option for the halt command in the kdm sessions.. 12/ Why KDE need lestiff ??? I hope this help you to improve this great beta release. [Cooker] KDE2 beta 4
Hi all, This is my test report about KDE2 beta4. I do a fresh install of Mdk7.1 + current update for 7.1 (include glibc). After that i upgrade XFree to 4.01, mandrake_desk, qt2 and kde from Cooker. - Found kickrc bug (wait for new kdebase : can you tell us where is the first ftp server available for new package ? there is many hours of delay between the announce in chrpm mailing list and the availability of the package in cooker mirrors) - Kcontrol crash with sig11 when attempt to configure screensaver - Applet system monitor crash with sig4 - kdmdesktop doesn't display properly : you need to switch to console and switch back to X to see the right background instead of the default X background (same with XFree86 3.3.x) - Doesn't find any way to configure kwin : buttons, color ... instead of theme - Sometimes dcopserver doesn't start, or some apps tell that dcopserver is not running instead that ps saw dcopserver That's all for the moment. Hi, About dhcp. It's possible to config. dhcp or pump or dhcpxd deal with an W$ NT dhcp server (Sorry is my office configuration) ? Re: [Cooker] GET READY FOR A DISCUSSION : AUTOMATIC INSTALL
Hi all, Do you known JumpStart from SUN or equivalent for IBM AIX or SGI IRIX ? Just type "boot net install" at the ok prompt go to the coffee machine and come back 1 hour later : Our machine is fire up and well configure for your office. If Mandrake will be present into large scale enterprise, which have a lot of different box, you must provide a powerful automatic install mechanism. Some idea/requirement : o This program let you install a machine by typing just one line. o It must be more automatic than kickstart. o Maintain an NFS or HTTP server with full distro + over package in simple manner. o Made some kickstart default installation file for the main config with an graphical editor. o Let the user connect to an WEB server to build it's personal kickstart starting with default config or scratch in expert or newbie mode : - Get a maximum technical information about the box - Perform automatic partitioning regarding already install OS (like W$) - Let the user choose between typical usage (like for install Development, WEB server ...) - At the end, build the right boot diskette with appropriate kickstart o Made installer more automatic by performing all hardware/software detection o Let the administrator the possibility to execute some shell script to customize the installation (automount configuration, printer configuration regarding the user group/dpt ...) o Configure MandrakeUpdate with the local server and not only official server o Add autorpm Let me known if you would more detail about JumpStart or new functionality's. [Cooker] Bug in Panoramix
Hi, Two bugs in Panoramix, 1/ I try install Mdk with panoramix and fall into a bug. My serial mouse wasn't detected and it's not possible to use DiskDrake without a mouse :-( Message from kernel at boot up is : detected PS/2 mouse (there isn't a PS/2 port :-\ /usr/bin/perl-install/mouse.pm detect no mouse and complain about this If i run manually (from F2 console) /usr/bin/perl-install/mouse.pm, no error messages were printed, but nothing happen. No /dev/mouse create. Selected the right mouse and port from the panoramix install, doesn't re-initialize X, and thus, there is no mouse after. X complain about /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/server/xmodmap and xkbd not found... Effectively the /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/server/ directory doesn't exist... 2/ When you use the network install options for panoramix, the first stage install don't let you choice your keyboard. It's difficult to write the path or other information like IP adresses with a french keyboard configured in US keyboard. I think panoramix must start with the normal first stage install from Helios and let the user choose keyboard, lang and mouse and then start with the graphical install.
