RE: [Cooker] Mandrake 8.0 install failure on IBM Thinkpad 600e

2001-04-28 Thread Robert Nicholson

Until you ctrl-alt-f1 and make a kernel from the console. Kind of helps if
you've already downloaded the .tar.gz's you'll need though. Namely pcmcia_cs
and 2.4.3 from linux.org

Is there any way to get read only access to my win2k NTFS partition
from Mandrake 8? OR is the NTFS support in 2.4.3 only for WinNT NTFS file
systems?

I have noticed that fonts are a lot hard to read in the KDE terminal when AA
is turned on. I have to use the other rxvt terminal to get readable text.

Yes you can but the PCIC controller will scan long before it reads that file
for it's interrupt. "exclude" is only for other devices.

can you do a cat /proc/interripts some time.

Does you PCIC controller use irq 11 as well as the sound driver?

[Cooker] cs46xx and pcmcia_cs

2001-04-26 Thread Robert Nicholson

Has anybody figured how why both of this will use interrupt 11?

I've tried PCIC_OPTS=irq_list=something without 11 to no avail

I had sound as a module and I noticed that pcmcia executes before
the alsa sound startup scripts so pcmcia takes interrupt 11 seeing it being
free but then I compiled sound into the kernel and the same thing happens.

Does anybody on a Thinkpad know why both cs461x and the i(pcic controller)
use irq 11?

[Cooker] How is sound setup by default for Thinkpads?

2001-04-26 Thread Robert Nicholson

One thing that MAndrake got right was the sound configuration for my
thinkpad and since I've had to compile my own kernel I cannot get sound
working. I was wondering how they did it. I've seen the /var/log entries
that use cs46xx and recognise my soundcard perfectly in their kernel and
I've even heard the sound. But I simply cannot get sound to work in my
custom kernel (to solve the mouse problems)... I notice they used Alsa in
addition to the support in the kernel and I've got the same setup also.

Anybody know exactly how the sound was setup in the kernel.

Have Mandrake patched their kernel source rpm yet to remove the Ps/2
keyboard code that stops the mouse working? I'd like to grab the rpm if it's
available anywhere.

[Cooker] Alsa on a21p?

2001-04-24 Thread Robert Nicholson

Anybody got Alsa working with the a21p?

I get output from amixer and I can unmute and set volume levels but when I
play an Mp3 in XMMS it asks me to check that my sound card is
configured correctly.

When the music plays in the KDE media player I hear nothing but the meter
ticks over ok.

RE: [Cooker] Redhat-7.1 vs Mandrake 8.0

2001-04-23 Thread Robert Nicholson

Good luck to them. The trick will be figuring out which patch broke
everything. A clear 2.4.3 tarball compiles with mouse support fine on my
Thinkpad ...

However, Is it possible to emulate the kernel configuration with those
sources? Can I just get the autoconf.h and basically build a working kernel
for my machine?

RE: [Cooker] Redhat-7.1 vs Mandrake 8.0

2001-04-23 Thread Robert Nicholson

Has anybody figured out what code disabled the PS/2 mice on Thinkpads in
8.0?

I can report that the kernel as shipped with 8.0 doesn't detect the PS/2
mouse on Thinkpads and that a kernel compiled from the source rpm's that
shipped with Mandrake won't either but that if you grab the latest 2.4.3
sources and compiled from there you'll get a mouse detected no problem.

...

Folks have been reporting that RC1 worked with Thinkpads so some patches
occured b/w RC1 and 8 that caused the PS/2 mice no longer to be supported by
the kernel. I noticed there was some disabled PS/2 keyboard code in a recent
April 16 commit notice. But otherwise I haven't investigated it any further.

Does anybody have the autoconf.h that it used to configure the kernel that's
shipped with Mandrake? I'd like to try it with the 2.4.3 source because I've
got a couple of "Failed"'s at bootup even though I have a working mouse and
I'd like to see the Alsa stuff and how that was setup too.

Cheers.

[Cooker] PS/2 mouse detection on an a21p Thinkpad with Mandrake 8

2001-04-22 Thread Robert Nicholson

It seems something changed b/w 7.2 and 8.0.. perhaps the 2.4 kernel is being
used in the install process.

Anyway, what I've noticed so far.

During a graphical install with no working mouse I get to the question about
"Do you have any SCSI Interfaces?"

There's no way to get focus on "OK" for this question.

Initally I can tab and select "No" but I cannot get focus on "OK" ever.

I can get focus and interact with the questions prior to this.

>From that point on things don't work.

...

I've noticed b/w 7.2 and 8.0 XFree /tmp/Xconf gets PS/2 in 7.2 and
"Microsoft" in 8.0

Is /tmp/Xconf derived from a process of autodetection or does it give the
user an opportunity to change mice later via the graphical installer? ie. is
it hardcoded to Microsoft mice now whereas in 7.2 it was PS/2?

Obviously because I get stuck so early in the graphical installer I'm not
going to be able to set anything to do with the mouse.

...

Any floppy images that work with PS/2 autodetection?

...

Hope this is clear.
