Re: [Cooker] Re: nvidia driver messes up console mode (framebuffer?)
So far every NVIDIA driver release has worked fine for me, including playing Neverwinter Nights and Unreal Tournament 2003. No X Lockups, no reboots, no console screwups (with or without framebuffer). Currently runing 4496 with GeForce2 MX 400 on a Athlon 1.4 Thunderbird and Linux version 2.4.22-10mdk on latest cooker. This Machine is usually continuously running for 5 days and shut down for the weekends. Card:NVIDIA GeForce2 DDR (generic): nVidia Corporation|NV11 Geforce2 MX/MX 400 [DISPLAY_VGA] (vendor:10de device:0110 subv:10b0 subd:0001) Serge P.S. The only console screwups I get with Mandrake 9.1/9.2/cooker is running it under VMWare (all 4.0.x versions) after quitting X. Both with the Mandrake included VMWare driver or the native application one. I have found that with my geForce4 MX440's only 4191 is stable. Bye jay Still running 4191 myself: GeForce MX 420. Can't get anything later to compile jay properly, and 4191 seems to work just fine. jay I hate those darn .run files, anyway. Grrr, NVidia cards are just making my life miserable. I have almost the same hardware that one of the Bug reporters and things work well for me. I need to try to found a pattern somewher. Until now it appears that: - drivers 4363 works for a lot of people. - drivers 4496 fails for several people (they work for me). Can people please mail me the output of lspcidrake -v and telling me what versions work/don't work for you? I have found that machines fail with PIII, PIV and athlons, both with NVidia IGP and normal cards. Only pattern found until now are that the following cards fail: - GForce MX - Gforce2 MX - IGP (Gforce4 MX) - standalone GForce4 MX At least the: - GForce3 Ti500 work (guess what is the card that I have) Current theory is that: New driver with cards older than GForce3 fail. GForce4 MX if I remember correctly is just a GForce2 core on steroids. Later, Juan learning too much about NVidia graphics cards.
Re: [Cooker] 9.2 - disaster already?
Fresh 9.2 install on a fresh harddrive. Everything went smooth and the machine rebooted and worked fine. Started Mandrake update and it downloaded/installed a couple of files successfully. After reboot almost the whole menu tree is empty and all application launcher items on the Kicker panel dissapeared. Ran update-menus and that brought back most (if not all) menu entries, but it didn't bring back any of the kicker application shortcuts. Had to start adding them manually again. Now I am almost afraid after reading some similar comments to install any new software or updates. Serge On Thursday 16 October 2003 04:20, Ron Stodden wrote: Oddly, installing all the 9.2 updates solved all problems (although there is no apparent reason why in the explains of the RPMs involved). After manually installing them and trying uselessly to run World Clock the amusement menu is rendered useless and cut back to only Arcade containing only frozen bubble and Chromium. The RPMs are still installed, which indicates some major conflictual screwup in the way they handle installing menu items. From this point user konqueror will not load from the menu. When tried manually: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ron]$ kfmclient openProfile filemanagement ERROR: Couldn't start konqueror from konqueror.desktop: Could not find service 'konqueror.desktop'. [EMAIL PROTECTED] ron]$ /usr/share/applink/konqueror.desktop is present. root konqueror will load and run from the kicker panel. Useful work-around: If the kicker root login dialog is ignored then user konqueror will load and run. konqueror will load and run if you click on (either as root or user) /usr/bin/konqueror. Confirmation and plan to fix before release at end of October, please.

Cheers; Leon Yes, but due to their long lasting presence in the stores plus the media attention they have build themselves enough name recognition to probably be able to pull this off. If you go on the street here and you ask people they will have heard of RedHat and probably even seen the box in the stores. Two IT directors I know tried Linux because they saw the boxes at Fry's and bought a pack. What was it? Both went for Redhat and one additionally bought a copy of Xandros. If you ask the same people about Mandrake, most of the times they have never heard that name. Like Austin said, people here are impulse buyer when they see it in the store and if Mandrake wants to be a bigger player in the US it needs that presence to build up their name recognition. I understand that the immediate payoff for Mandrake is less but in the longterm it will just be beneficial. Even SUSE as a German company realized that and managed to get themselves known here thanks mostly to the boxed sets, not even providing a free ISO to download. Also for the enterprise, deals such as the ones between Oracle and Redhat and Suse are necessary to build credibility as a serious platform. Thanks Serge

Now 9.2 is being rushed out and I doubt we'll see those boxes appear in any of these stores either soon. In my opinion that is something that Mandrake needs to put more effort in in order to get themselves noticed with the mainstream public. I know of quite a few people that just pick up a box at any of these stores to try them out just for the fact that they are available there while they were pondering through the store. thx for a great distro and all the hard work involved by anyone at Mandrake and all you guys here on cooker. Hi I thought I would try some of those tests you suggested. First of all the Directory with the updated cooker files on the ftp server is : /home/spluess/Mandrake-devel So I tried the following curl command: [Serge-Pluesss-Computer:~] root# curl -k --location-trusted -R -f --stderr - -z harddrake-9.2-0.21mdk.i586.rpm -O ftp://spluess:[EMAIL PROTECTED]//home/spluess/Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/ Mandrake/RPMS/harddrake-9.2-0.21mdk.i586.rpm This is the result of that command: curl: (9) Couldn't cd to home So then I tried it without the double //: [Serge-Pluesss-Computer:~] root# curl -k --location-trusted -R -f --stderr - -z harddrake-9.2-0.21mdk.i586.rpm -O ftp://spluess:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/home/spluess/Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/ Mandrake/RPMS/harddrake-9.2-0.21mdk.i586.rpm Same result: curl: (9) Couldn't cd to home then I thought I might try not to specify the /home/spluess part as the Mandrake-devel folder is under the user accounts home directory: [Serge-Pluesss-Computer:~] root# curl -k --location-trusted -R -f --stderr - -z harddrake-9.2-0.21mdk.i586.rpm -O ftp://spluess:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/ harddrake-9.2-0.21mdk.i586.rpm That command just hangs. Same also for double // between dbdev and Mandrake-devel Then I tried adding --disable-epsv, same results as above curl -l ftp://spluess:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/ also just hangs so then I tried to add -P and I got the file listing from my home dir with the -l command Next try was the transfer command above with the -P option and this time it worked, but only without the /home/spluess part in the ftp path: [Serge-Pluesss-Computer:~] root# curl -k --location-trusted -P -R -f --stderr - -z harddrake-9.2-0.21mdk.i586.rpm -O ftp://spluess:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/ harddrake-9.2-0.21mdk.i586.rpm and here is the output % Total% Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Curr. [Cooker] perl(this) is needed
Hi for the last week and a half I have not been able to update my cooker installation. The error message I am getting is the following one: Installation failed: perl(this) is needed by MySQL-bench-4.0.13-2mdk Anyway I can get passed this? Probably not related to the above I have now noticed much more information being displayed when running urpmi and saw the following lines early in the process: The following packages have to be removed for others to be upgraded: gimp-extras-1.2.0-5mdk.noarch (due to missing gimp) gimpprint-4.2.5-18mdk.i586 (due to missing gimp) xsane-gimp-0.90-3mdk.i586 (due to missing gimp) Was just wondering why that says (due to missing gimp) as gimp is installed and is version 1.2.3-21mdk? [Cooker] Still issues adjusting volume with SBlive and digital speakers
Hi I am still having problems adjusting volume for my SBlive soundcard with Boston Accoustic Digital speakers (2 speakers) from applications. I can 'temporarily' fix it for xmms by doing the following (suggested earlier): echo 'PCM Wave 0' ? /proc/asound/card0/oss_mixer On reboot I have to do this again (or add it to some startup script). Now I can change the volume in xmms. But I still can't adjust the volume in apps like xine, aviplay, etc. Sliding the volume control in any of these apps just doesn't do anything. This is with using alsa as the soundsystem. Is there any way to get the sound with the SBLive so that all apps can adjust the volume? This is fresh installed from cooker late January and since updated everyday for latest files. Tried with alsa that comes with mdk which is now at 0.9.0rc8 (and also downloaded the 0.9.1). Kernel is at 2.4.21-0.13mdk and the following rpm's are installed as well: alsa-utils-0.9.0-0.8rc7mdk libalsa-data-0.9.0-0.14rc7mdk libalsa2-0.9.0-0.14rc7mdk alsamixergui-0.9.0-0.6rc1_2mdk Thanks for any help Serge

While a bugfix is made, there is a way to manually correct this bug. You have to copy the files kfmclient.desktop, kfmclient_dir.desktop, kfmclient_html.desktop and kfmclient_war.desktop from /usr/share/applnk/System/ to your ~/.kde/share/applnk-mdk/ directory. This will fix the annoying dialog pop-up. this is an old email sent in thi ml regard francesco I did try with a fresh created user like I mentioned earlier this week and it still happens. I will try the copy of those files. So every time I create a new user I will have to manually copy those files to the new users .kde directory? [Cooker] KMail preview pane font problem
Hi I noticed this since about a week now in the latest cookers. Kmail is using the sans font for the folder list ad the message list but it shows a different mostly unreadable font for the preview pane. So I went to the kmail settings and under the Appearance icon I checked Use custom fonts. Message body was set to sans and in the box at the bottom it shows sans correctly but the preview and the full message window still use that other font. So I select Arial for the font and it shows the preview pane and full message correctly with that Arial font. But if I re-select Sans, again it shows it correctly in the box at the bottom but the preview pane and full message window show that other font again. I checked in a couple of other applications and all of them render the Sans font correctly. I attached a screenshot that shows that situation. Any idea? Serge attachment: kmailpreview.jpg

Also, I do not own digital speakers, so I'm not sure which mixer setting you should use. Can you try 'wave surround' in kmix to see if it helps? d. Well, like I said earlier. I do get sound out of the digital speakers with the alsa driver (also as others have noted with a lot of cracklings). What I can't do is adjust the volume from the volume sliders in multimedia applications such as xmms, aviplay, xine. I can move those volume sliders from 100% to 0% and nothing changes. From Kmix I can use the following sliders to adjust the volume: Wave, Emu10k1 PCM only changes the volume on the left speaker. All other sliders (including master/base/treble) don't do anything at all. So i wanted to try the oss driver and tried emu10k1 and afterwards audigy and couldn't get any sound with them at all. So now I am back with Alsa but can't adjust the volume from within the applications. Thanks Serge
[Cooker] Cannot change volume in any multimedia programs (snd-emu10k1)
Hi today I came accross this issue which I hadn't noticed as I am usually using the volume knob on the speakers to adjust the volume. I use a SBLive and have digital Boston Accoustic speakers hooked up to it. Alsa starts up successfully at boot and I get sound in all programs. But when I go to adjust the volume in any of the programs nothing happen. Sounds stays at whatever volume it is set. I tried with xmms, aviplay, mplayer, xine, kaboodle, kscd, etc. So I started to look at the mixers. Am running in 1600x1200 resolution and the only mixer I found first was kmix and that came up going way over the whole width of the screen. But nothing I would change in there would do anything at all. So I read that I should try Alsamixer which wasn't installed. So I installed it and when launched I was presented with 63 entries. The top recognized my soundcard as Soundblaster Live! with Cirrus Logic CS4297A rev 4 chipset. But no matter which slider I was trying to change it would not affect the volume nor bass nor treble. Next I tried Arts control tool and that one too is not showing any activity and changing the slider doesn't do anything. Same with aumix. So I figured let's try another sound system. Currently I was using the snd-emu10k1 which I guess is the alsa. then I tried the audigy and the emu10k1. After changing to either of those I got no sound at all. No matter what I tried. So finally I chose snd-emu10k1 and now I have sound again, but also can't adjust any volume anywhere. This is what the sound configuration tool put in modules.conf: above snd-emu10k1 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-slot-0 snd-emu10k1 and this is what I get when I do a lsmod: snd-seq-midi4768 0 (autoclean) (unused) snd-emu10k1-synth 5276 0 (autoclean) (unused) snd-emux-synth 31644 0 (autoclean) [snd-emu10k1-synth] snd-seq-midi-emul 6780 0 (autoclean) [snd-emux-synth] snd-seq-virmidi 4572 0 (autoclean) [snd-emux-synth] snd-seq-oss31104 0 (unused) snd-seq-midi-event 5640 0 [snd-seq-midi snd-seq-virmidi snd-seq-oss] snd-seq42736 2 [snd-seq-midi snd-emux-synth snd-seq-midi-emul snd-seq-virmidi snd-seq-oss snd-seq-midi-event] snd-pcm-oss43172 1 snd-mixer-oss 14520 0 [snd-pcm-oss] snd-emu10k168080 1 [snd-emu10k1-synth] snd-pcm76384 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-emu10k1] snd-timer 14408 0 [snd-seq snd-pcm] snd-rawmidi17600 0 [snd-seq-midi snd-seq-virmidi snd-emu10k1] snd-util-mem3008 0 [snd-emux-synth snd-emu10k1] snd-hwdep 5344 0 [snd-emu10k1] snd-ac97-codec 35560 0 [snd-emu10k1] snd-seq-device 5832 0 [snd-seq-midi snd-emu10k1-synth snd-emux-synth snd-seq-oss snd-seq snd-emu10k1 snd-rawmidi] snd43396 0 [snd-seq-midi snd-emux-synth snd-seq-virmidi snd-seq-oss snd-seq-midi-event snd-seq snd-pcm-oss snd-mixer-oss snd-emu10k1 snd-pcm snd-timer snd-rawmidi snd-util-mem snd-hwdep snd-ac97-codec snd-seq-device] soundcore 6276 0 [snd] and lspci gives me this: 00:0a.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! I was not able to start any of the programs until the bad font was removed. Like Serge, I found it didnt' matter which fonts I moved around. Frederic Crozat spent some timelooking at this too. I found that it depends on the *order* in which fc-cache is run... If you run fc-cache in /usr/X11R6/lib/fonts so it descends recursively, the result is useless, programs don't run. If you make a change, e.g. moving a font or directory, things run. E.g. I did, mv drakfonts .., to move a whole directory away. If you then move the directory back, and do cd drakfont fc-cache -f -v `pwd` then everything runs, with all the fonts yuo had before. Well, I'm not able to fix the problem when regenerating cache using this method :(( Furthermore, the cache file generated in the drakfont directory is identical! Only the tiemstamp is different. In fact, there is two differents ways to generate cache in fontconfig code (ar), one is used when using fc-cache, the other when starting a program linked with fontconfig (and when cache is not coherent..) Ferderic suspects some code in pango, because that's where gedit dies. I don't think it is a bug in pango.. I think it is a bug in the fontconfig matching code, which is only used by pango.. -- Frederic Crozat MandrakeSoft Hi there yup, it is definitely not a bad font and the above method didn't help either. What I found though is that the drakfont/ttf directory has 234 fonts in it. I have to move like more than half of them out and then all the programs work fine. It doesn't matter which fonts they are. I'm not so sure of that.. If you don't want to test all those fonts yourself, could you send me a private mail with an URL for downloading a tarball of this font directory so I can test ? Was wondering if anything had happened with this as with cooker current of today I am still experiencing the same issue and am starting to wonder if this is going to go over into the released 9.1. Thanks for any update Serge
[Cooker] RC1 issues thoughts
Hi just installed RC1 on a Dell Dimension 4550. Configuring printers during installation doesn't show/discover the jetdirect printers on the local network. Have to install and configure them manually. 9.0 discovered them correctly. Choosing reboot from KDE causes a drop to the console login prompt instead of rebooting. Login in at that moment and typing reboot shuts the pc down instead of rebooting. Both of these behavior are new since RC1. Didn't happen with Beta 2/1 Clicking on Printer Configuration in the Mandrake control center just causes the icon to flash, but printerdrake is not being started. Starting it from command line works. This has been since beta2 at least. Samba Configuration under Configuration-Network has blank buttons (for example for Save, Reset, etc) that you need to guess what they are under all/most configuration screens OpenOffice doesn't have the Help files installed. Shouldn't that be part of a default OpenOffice installation instead of having to go install it manually later? Konsole's default font looks pretty bad on this default 1280x1024 resolution as it takes almost the full width of the screen. Courier 10 Pitch looks already better. Not sure what it used to be on 9.0 and 8.2 but those looked better. This is a dedicated test machine without any other OS installed on it and the default fonts look awful on this machine. I will start to modify/install other fonts but out of the box the system looks just bad., especially the fonts on the desktop and in the konqueror filemanager and startmenu which are the first things a new user is likely to see. Konqueror LAN Browser just list lan://localhost/ if I type in lan://mydomain/ I get an error message saying The lisa daemon does not appear to be running but it shows up with a ps ax: 1696 ?S 0:00 /usr/bin/lisa -c /etc/lisarc I had already changed samba to the same workgroup name as the windows network and was able to use Linneighborhood to browse the domain Gnomba also immediately browsed the local domain/workgroup correctly. I watched my co-worker trying to get browsing to work in the konqueror file manager give up after spending half a day. He installed a couple of other distros and some of them are capable of browsing the local subnet or local full network out of the box without reconfiguring anything, just launch the konqueror file manager, click on LAN Browsing and it showed all the hosts on the local network. Wonder what it would take for Mandrake Linux to get that going as well out of the box. Three people I showed the default desktop to, asked where the icon for the webbrowser is. I show them the shortcut down on the panel, but they all said they want it on the desktop. They said that that icon on the desktop should launch the default webbrowser if that is possible (so either Mozilla / Konqueror / Netscape / or which other browser was selected as the 'default' browser). They mentioned similar thoughts for the Default E-Mail program as it seem those are the main apps together with wordprocessing and playing mp3s that they would be using most of the time. Mandrake-Galaxy has 'only' text entries and next to them the text image. Those users I mentioned above also said that the four icons for MandrakeClub / Discover custom services / Buy new software / Get Support would be enough if they would be in the Galaxy screen and in the menu system but not as an icon on the desktop. Thank you for a great distro Serge

[Cooker] Moving mouse over media files causes freezes of the konqueror windows
Hi noticed this a while ago but as it is still happening I thought I would post this. If I open a Konqueror File Manager window and move the mouse over a media icon such as an mp3, wav, avi or asf the mouse pointer changes to a pointing hand and stays that way. The window is then frozen. If I move another window over that window it won't repaint. I can kill the window but X will hang on shutdown and I have to do a ctrl-alt-backspace to kill it. This also happens if I have a media file on the desktop but then the whole desktop freezes. What I notice is that two processes get spawned as soon as I move over a media file: 2326 ?S 0:00 /usr/bin/artsd -F 10 -S 4096 -s 60 -m artsmessage -l 3 -f 2328 ?S 0:00 /usr/bin/artsd -F 10 -S 4096 -s 60 -m artsmessage -l 3 -f This system has a Soundblaster Live in it and is using the standard kernel with alsa support for the card. 00:0a.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev 08) Today I upgraded the kernel and it also upgraded the alsa driver from 0.9.0RC5 to 0.9.0RC6 but it still happens. Serge

[Cooker] aviplay mms error messages
Hi I am using aviplay to open a .ASF file which points to a mms:// location. The first time I launch aviplay I can click on open, change the filetype, select the .asf file and it launches the station properly. Now if I quit and relaunch aviplay I immediately get an error box stating: 'The protocol 'mms' is not supported clicking ok brings up the same error message another 3 times and then aviplay launches and immediately brings up the Open video file(s) dialog box. When I change the file type to .ASF... I immediately get another one of those same errors. I click ok, then select the .asf file and the station starts to play properly. If I delete the folder .avm from my home dir then aviplay starts properly. But after that it has re-created the .avm folder and the default file has a reference to the mms url last opened. This is on current full cooker installation. I downloaded and compiled aviplay from source on a 9.0 box and it doesn't behave that way. I never get that error message. Thanks in advance for any suggestions/help/comments. Serge

Re: [Cooker] No fonts found
Well, here is my interesting discovery. I moved all the A* fonts out of /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont/ttf to a safe location and boom, I was able to launch mozilla, menudrake and drakconf. So I thought I was lucky and just one of these fonts was broken. Then I started to move one font after another back in and each time I was able to launch those programs. But if I reboot, boom, programs won't start anymore. So I move all the A* fonts out of that dir, launched those programs and then rebooted. After the reboot I couldn't launch any of these programs again with the error message about no fonts found. After playing a little more with it I came to the conclusion that it doesn't matter which fonts I move around. After a reboot I need to su to root, move a group of fonts (such as A* or a* or B* or any one of them), launch one of the above programs, then quit that program, move the moved fonts back and voila, until the next reboot I can use all the programs with all those fonts. I moved fonts out of that directory in steps until gnome-alsamixer started, then put the last group removed back into the directory, and it wouldn't start. Used process of elimination and found that onyx.ttf was the font that broke it (imported ages ago). Moved all the fonts back (except for onyx.ttf), redid the fc-cache, and everything is running just fine. Funny, I found the same buggy font in Liam directory.. It seems to be a bug in fontconfig which breaks sans aliases..

All this started with the updates on Monday December 30th. This was/is on a full cooker that was installed from scratch early to mid december and just being updated every other day with urpmi --auto-select -auto No special tinkering with any settings. Just using Mozilla to browse and KMail to check email and listening to mp3's. One contributor suggested a workaround to at least be able to use the apps in question by : declare -x GDK_USE_XFT=0 But this doesn't really solve the problem but at least you can use the apps. Serge

[Cooker] Mozilla, drakconf and other programs fail to launch..
Hi I reported earlier that after the urpmi update on Monday December 30th mozilla would fail to launch. This had been a clean Cooker 9.1 install from early december and mozilla and drakconf had been working properly. After doing to the urpmi --auto-select --auto ... on that monday morning mozilla would not launch anylonger. Not having able to resolve the issue I would just run the urpmi every morning and see if it would work again, uninstalled and reinstalled mozilla, removed the .mozilla directories, etc. So far no luck. Then today I tried to launch drakconf and it also failed to launch. But it gave me the following error message: - drakconf --verbose No fonts found; this probably means that the fontconfig library is not correctly configured. You may need to edit the fonts.conf configuration file. More information about fontconfig can be found in the fontconfig(3) manual page and on http://fontconfig.org - Now, since the original install of the fresh cooker and doing the urpmi's every morning I had not touched anything about the fontconfigs. Now obviously something that got updated on that december 30th must have caused this to brake. I checked the file /etc/fonts/fonts.config and the paths that are in there exist and have fonts in them. Also tried running fc-cache and no luck. Would love to be able to find out what it is and how this can be fixed without reinstalling the whole cooker from scratch. Here is the listing of packages that got updated that day. I read something that the latest XFree was doing something with Xft2 stuff but haven't been able to make sense of it for my current issue. [Cooker] Mozilla on the latest cooker still not launching
Hi well, now that the mirrors have started to work again I was hoping that doing all the latest updates would get mozilla to go again but no luck. This is a full cooker installation and the latest mozilla was working properly until doing a urpmi --auto-select --auto -v on December 30th. Sent a message to that and had some replies from others having the same issue. mozilla is not giving any error messages, just doesn't launch. I tried to delete the .mozilla dir but no help, even though it recreates the dir when trying to launch it. If there is any other steps I can take to give you more useful information please let me know. As mozilla rpm's hadn't been touched with those urpmi I wonder what other packages could have 'broken' it. Serge

[Cooker] Mozilla won't start since last urpmi --auto-select --auto ....
Hi there Since the last urpmi --auto-select --auto -v for the latest cooker mozilla (whose packages didn't change with that last update) won't start anylonger. These are the mozilla packages (not changed in that update): mozilla-1.3-0.alpha.1mdk mozilla-mail-1.3-0.alpha.1mdk mozilla-irc-1.3-0.alpha.1mdk The file /usr/lib/gconfd-2 has a file date of Aug 26, so I doubt it was updated in this latest run. So far the only messages I can see when trying to start mozilla (after emptying the messages log and also the user.log) are: Dec 31 06:48:22 athlon-sp gconfd (spluess-2246): starting (version 1.2.1), pid 2246 user 'spluess' Dec 31 06:48:22 athlon-sp gconfd (spluess-2246): Resolved address xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory to a read-only config source at position 0 Dec 31 06:48:22 athlon-sp gconfd (spluess-2246): Resolved address xml:readwrite:/home/spluess/.gconf to a writable config source at position 1 Dec 31 06:48:22 athlon-sp gconfd (spluess-2246): Resolved address xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults to a read-only config source at position 2 Dec 31 06:50:22 athlon-sp gconfd (spluess-2246): GConf server is not in use, shutting down. I tried deleting the .mozilla folder. Same result. Then I tried deleting the .gconfd folder (as this was the only thing showing up in the log). Re: [Cooker] Re: [CHRPM] kdelibs-3.1-0.beta2.11mdk
After just installing the latest cooker yesterday morning I wonder why the Mouse KDE Control Module has Single-Click to open file and folders selected, yet I have to double click on icons/folders/treeviews/... I understand that the clicking on the treeview and not getting the display on the right is a bug that hopefully gets fixed but shouldn't the Single/Double click at least follow the settings from the control panel? P.S. How do I get Single Click (as I like the single click) back in the meanwhile, if not through the control panel? Thanks Serge

[Cooker] Background in KDE on Cooker from 10/29
Hi just installed a fresh cooker from 10/29 and tried to change the background for KDE. I right mouse click on the desktop, click on Configure Desktop and click on Background. Then under Images I see the default entry: /usr/share/mdk/backgrounds/default.png If I add an or multiple image they show up in that list. But if I click Apply and then OK nothing happen. If I go back to that same Control Module again the lines that I had added are gone. If I remove the default.png line and add another one again nothing happens. The background doesn't change to the newly selected graphic. So I tried to manually change the line in: /home/user/.kde/share/config/kdesktoprc under [Desktop0] WallpaperList=. And still when I launch X and KDE the background is still showing the default.png one. Serge
[Cooker] Mdk 9.0 Recompiling Kernel for Athlon
Hi there today I thought I would look into recompiling the kernel. First thing I wanted to try is to just change the processor type to Athlon (Got a 1Ghz Athlon Thunderbird). Did the make dep then make bzImage then make modules then make modules_install then make install Now I rebooted and bang. Big kernel panic's. I have a / partition with ReiserFS and a swap partition. the error message was on the reiserfs module not finding something with mmx. Even the old kernel wouldn't boot anymore. Was able to boot from the floppy though. Compiled ReiserFS into the kernel, not as module. This time it booted further but lot's of modules failed with messages about various things mmx not found. Like the following one: modprobe: unresolved symbol _mmx_memcpy So right now I am recompiling the kernel and setting the cpu type to i586 Serge

[Cooker] 3Com USB Camera causes X to freeze on startup with MDK 9.0
Hi there I installed 9.0 from scratch on a ABit Mobo with a 1Ghz Athlon, 512Mb Ram and a Geforce2 Ti Graphics card. On the USB ports I have a 3com USB PC Camera which is basically a Vicam cam. Under XP I use the Vicam driver due to the fact that 3com stopped supporting the cam. Install went pretty smooth just as all the beta's and rc's, including the X configuration test. Now when I went to start X the system froze with a black screen. Not even Ctrl-Alt-Backspace would bring it back. So resetting is the only solution at that point. One thing I noticed is that during startup of the system the green LED on the Cam comes on and stays on. Under windows the led only comes on when the cam is actually in use. If I unplug the cam X will start just fine and dandy. [Cooker] RC1 install problem between CD1 and CD2
Hi just tried a fresh install of RC1 on a generic Athlon System. Did the expert install with a / and a swap partition and selected a lot of packages. The system started to copy files. Then it ejected the first CD and asked for the second one. When I insert the second CD it keeps on being ejected and I am asked to place the 2nd CD in the drive. I noticed that the the box is saying it is trying to copy Gnome 2 Help Browser After searching a little bit I found out that yelp.xxx is located in the Mandrake/RPMS folder on the first CD. The second CD only has a Mandrake/RPMS2 folder and that one includes 721 objects. So now I am not sure if it is trying to install yelp or if it is not finding whatever next file it is trying to install. Thanks for any information Serge

Hi Jason. I tried what you suggested, renaming the theatre_drv.o file. At first try it generated an error, saying module theater couldn't be found, but I tried again and now it seems like X works. But I still think that Mandrake should try to recompile all the DRI file by taking them from the DRI project (http://dri.sourceforge.net) and not those included in XFree which seem to have problems. [Cooker] 9.0 RC1 : Dell Inspiron 8100 + ATI Radeon Mobile 7500 X config problems
Hi, I just wanted to report serious trouble after testing Linux Mandrake 9.0 Release Candidate 1 on my laptop. Here is shortly the configuration : Dell Inspiron 8100 ATI Radeon 7500 64MB UXGA LCD 15 1600x1200 512MB RAM PIII 1.2Ghz IDE 30GB Basically, all goes well during the install until I get to the X configuration. Then I select for the graphic card : ATI Radeon and for the display : Dell 1600X I then say I want to test the configuration, and not only does the screen go black, but it never returns to the configuration. All I could do was CTRL+ALT+DEL. I had already had this problem with Mandrake 8.2 and was hoping to seeing it fixed. I suppose you must have been unaware of it as it is still here. I did manage to fix it under 8.2 by downloading the DRI project source and recompiling it and installing for my computer. Maybe this would be a good idea to do this for 9.0 RC 2 ? If you need more details, please let me know. Best regards, Serge Huber. __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Finance - Get real-time stock quotes http://finance.yahoo.com

By looking further I noticed that the /etc/sane.d/dll.conf file only had one line in it with the word ### net I added snapscan to that file and voila I was able to scan. No warnings and no problems running the vpnclient Upgraded that Mandrake 8.2 installation with Beta 3 and it installed kernel 2.4.19. After that upgrade the vpnclient is still functioning properly. [Cooker] Beta 3 Install - SB Live 5.1 - Cisco VPN Client
Hi installed 9.0 B3 on a Abit KT7A motherboard with a Soundblaster SB Live 5.1 (not the value card). During install the card is not detected. The card was detected properly with 8.2, Beta 1 and 2 Tried to install Cisco System VPN Client 3.5.2. During install I get the following warning: Making module interceptor.c:101: warning: excess elements in array initializer interceptor.c:101: warning: (near initialization for `interceptor_devs') frag.c: In function `queue_fragment': frag.c:55: warning: concatenation of string literals with __FUNCTION__ is deprecated frag.c:62: warning: concatenation of string literals with __FUNCTION__ is deprecated frag.c:78: warning: concatenation of string literals with __FUNCTION__ is deprecated frag.c: In function `have_all_fragments': frag.c:122: warning: concatenation of string literals with __FUNCTION__ is deprecated frag.c: In function `need_reorder_frag': frag.c:202: warning: concatenation of string literals with __FUNCTION__ is deprecated frag.c: In function `handle_fragment': frag.c:257: warning: concatenation of string literals with __FUNCTION__ is deprecated Copying module to directory /lib/modules/2.4.19-3mdk/CiscoVPN. Now when I try to run the vpnclient_init file I get the following error (or if it is run during boot it will panic): /etc/init.d/vpnclient_init: line 129: 2880 Segmentation fault /sbin/insmod ${PC}/${VPNMOD} Failed (insmod) Now, this installed and ran fine on Mandrake 8.2. No warnings and no errors. I then 'upgraded' the 8.2 to 9.0 Beta3 and the vpnclient still works properly. Only if I install a clean copy of 9.0 Beta3 then try to install and start the vpn client it fails.
[Cooker] 3Com USB PC Camera still crashing startx with Beta3
Hi if 3Com USB PC Camera is plugged in during install of 9.0 Beta3 after the initial reboot the camera becomes active. If now I try to run startx the screen goes blank and the system is locked up. Re: [Cooker] 9.0 Beta 2 install kernel panic on Abit Mobo
Hi yup. I was installing on /dev/hda4 and one thing I noticed so far is that if I install with the Raid Bios turned off in the main bios everything works fine. I can even switch it back on after the install. Haven't yet had the opportunity to reinstall and recheck the lilo.conf Thanks Serge At 8/12/2002 12:56 AM, you wrote: Serge Plüss [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Unknown bridge resource 0: assuming transparent Kernel Panic: Unable to mount root fs on 03:04 can you check lilo.conf? [Cooker] Beta 2 X lockup with 3com USB cam
Hi installed beta 2 and forgot to unplug the 3com USB Camera. Install went through and looking at dmesg I could see lines for driver (with some errors) being loaded for the 3com USB PC Camera. The camera also had the led on (as being active) after the system came up. Now if I tried to launch X with startx I would get a black screen and the machine would be frozen (No Ctrl-Alt-Bcksp, nor Ctrl-Alt-Del possible). If I unplug the Camera X comes up fine. Just wanted to post this experience. Serge
[Cooker] 9.0 Beta 2 install kernel panic on Abit Mobo
Hi there Just tried to install 9.0 Beta 2 a couple of times without success. The mobo is an Abit KT7A (With the highpoint raid controller). For this test no Harddrives attached to the raid controller. One IBM 80Gb Harddrive attached to the primary IDE controller. One Panasonic DVD and one Lite-On CD Recorder attached to the secondary IDE controller. Chose the Expert install and went successfully through the whole install with one reiserfs partition for / and a swap partition. After successful install upon booting I get the following error: Unknown bridge resource 0: assuming transparent Kernel Panic: Unable to mount root fs on 03:04 I get the same message if I try fail-safe mode. Installing 8.2 on the same partitions with all the same configuration works just fine. Also tried Suse 8.0 and it installed fine on those same partitions. Serge

[Cooker] 8.2 RC1 install and cooker updates
Installed 8.2 RC1. Overall great experience. I tried to go through the mailing list and through other archive/google searches and managed a few things that I couldn't figure out completely. I apologize ff it has come up before and it has slipped passed me. The only thing I noticed from the regular install has to do with the network settings. The install asks for the following settings for the network: Hostname: DNS Server: Gateway: I put in the FQDN with the hostname, so machinename.mydomain.com After the install is through I can't ping any machine on mydomain.com. So I check the various configuration files and find the following: resolv.conf has the following entries: search localdomain nameserver xxx.yyy.zzz.qqq Then I look at the file /etc/sysconfig/network and see that the HOSTNAME is set to machinename.mydomain.com but the DOMAINNAME is set to localdomain. At this stage I can't ping hostnames on my network without the full domainname. So I add the line domain mydomain.com to resolv.conf and now I can ping hostnames without the domain. I also change the DOMAINNAME line in /etc/sysconfig/network to reflect mydomain.com. I checked on a Redhat 7.2 machine and saw that resolv.conf doesn't have the domain line in it and the network file doesn't have the DOMAINNAME line but I can ping hostnames on my domain without the full domainname. Not sure where else to look for this. The next thing I noticed is when I do updates with the current cooker is that it updates bootsplash among other things (version is 1.3.9-1mdk). Now with the new one installed the graphical screen disappears and only the Mandrake logo shows up under the kernel version. Then I get a black screen with the white text for the few init lines. On shutdown I get a black screen with a blue bar going accross the bottom. So I uninstalled the update and then reinstalled the one that came with RC1 (1.3.8-1mdk) and still the same result. Can't get it back to the graphical way of just after the RC1 install. Also reran lilo and also tried to recreate a new initrd. This happened also when I did a bootsplash upgrade with Beta 4. Next install is the emu10k1-tools-0.9.4-1mdk as I have a SB Live 5.1 with Digital Boston Speakers. The rpm installs the needed files like /usr/bin/emu-config , /usr/bin/emu10k1-ctl (why was this one renamed from the original package??) and /etc/emu.conf where I set the Digital Speaker option to Yes. If I run the command /usr/bin/emu-config -d manually then everything works fine. The documentation then says to add the following lines to the /etc/modules.conf : post-install emu10k1 /usr/bin/emu10k1-ctl That doesn't work. Only got it to work by adding the following line instead: post-install emu10k1 /usr/bin/emu-config -d But that circumvents the use of the options file in /etc And last but not least :-) I have a Geforce 2MX 400 and I downloaded the newest drivers from NVIDIA (source files for GLX and kernel). Both compile and install go smooth and X starts properly and all 3D apps work great. But if I reboot I can't start X unless I do a insmod NVdriver manually as root first. The line it puts into modules.conf is: alias /dev/nvidia/* NVdriver I tried to change that to : alias char-major-195 NVdriver but it still doesn't get loaded at boot time. The only way so far I found is to do the manual insmod NVdriver after every boot. (I know that these are proprietary drivers and this might not be the right place to discuss issues with them, but still thought I would at least mention this). Ok, I think that's it so far. Am looking forward to the released version and see if the above issues will be gone or maybe there are some simple fixes for them. Thank you Serge
[Cooker] Beta 4 and resolv.conf issues
Hi Just installed Beta 4 as a clean install in Expert mode. One thing I noticed throughout all the Beta's so far is that when you are asked for the network information you are asked for hostname (where I enter my FQDN machine.mydomain.com), ip address etc but the resolv.conf doesn't reflect the domainname in the search domain entries. The only entry there is search localdomain . This is also the name that is listed in /etc/sysconfig/network in the DOMAINNAME line, even though the HOSTNAME shows the FQDN So usually (Beta 1 - 3) all I need to do is to change the resolv.conf to search mydomain.com and I am rolling. Not so in Beta4. I cannot ping machine as I get unknown host. If I do a nslookup it successfully resolves machine to machine.mydomain.com also if I type in the command host I get the FQDN machine.mydomain.com I even started to try changing the lookup orders in host.conf and nsswitch.conf but still no success. On startup everything loads with no failure, dmesg shows no errors and I just did an update to packages from cooker as of this morning and still no go. Thank you Serge P.S. BTW if you do a network install with the network.img image instead of the CD's then it asks during the network configuration if you want to retain the information entered during the booting of the floppy and then it actually puts that information into the resolv.conf But in this instance with Beta4 still a nogo to just use the machine name without the domain part for any commands like ping, etc.

[Cooker] SBLive and Digital Speakers
Hi I have a Soundblaster live 5.1 with Boston Accoustic Digital speakers connected to it. Mandrake 8.1 and the 8.2b come with a working SBLive driver but not with the emu tools necessary to configure the Soundcard for digital output. Would be a nice inclusion to the distro. Maybe at one point it will also be a 'checkable' option in the one of the various Mixers or other gui-configurations available. Serge
