Brings me to a question though - what's the point of XftConfig? To slow down the system? Without dir specified for the newly installed fonts I can use them just the same in my apps but they don't hang my system every time I load an app. Current situation with fonts is terrible. Year ago I had font server installed on remote machine and used it on clients, this days to have AA enables Xft need to have direct access to font files, so I had to mount font directory, but since my network is slow I had a lot of problems with big Unicode fonts ( Xft loads every encoding not the one that is used) so I had to copy fonts to every machine.Xftconfig and xftcache helps a little bit because with cache file Xft does not have to read every single file to determine encodings and properties font provides.

I'd like to know how many fonts installed/active TrueType/OpenType/Type1/Speedo/etc Revolution is what MS does, it's a violent way of making too many changes at one time and not being able to stabilize the code, evolution is gradual and reliable, and doesn't require reeducation at every release. It's hard enough to keep up with all the changes mandrake makes to configuration type stuff (not that it's bad - sure better than the time I'd spend turning slak or debian into what I get from mdk). Also i'd like to see User templates where i can set their shell, account/availability, group membership, password control. Re: [Cooker] Aurora + Mandrake 9.0
Gary Greene said: I very much disagree with that. The one thing that Aurora did well was obfuscating the start scripts from the user. MS Windows splash screen is simple for a reason: the common joe user doesn't care that a certain subsystem is loading or not. all they care is that it works. If fsck, kudzu, and harddrake don't know how to behave with the it, find a workaround for them. And saying that we shouldn't care about the startup's appearance, then we've religated Linux only to the technological geeks. We should always make sure that the first thing that they see will inspire confidence that this is a polished and professional product. I dont think that those messages make linux unprofessional or difficult for newbies. They simply have to wait 10 sec for the GDM login screen (or even autologin) and then login in their KDE and open StarOffice XMMS and Mozilla. Remember: a) Build a system that any idiot can use and they will make a better idiot. b) Build a system that any idiot can use and only idiots will use it. Just a joke ;-) For the complete newbies i think we should make a new Mandrake distribution: one CD, no compilers and development packages, no emacs ;-), pre-configured programs and only one package for a task.
