[Cooker] [Bug 880] [kernel] Can't boot because of HighPoint HPT370 RAID

I too wonder why this is resolved. Using RC3 on a VIA KT133 with built in
HPT370, I get the exact same messages upon boot as comment #1. Have tried
acpi=off and ide=nodma with no success. If I boot from the floppy boot, I can
at least get past the problem, but there is a stream of hde messages identical
to comment #33. Once booted, hde is unavailable (RC3 resides on hda3). Please
reopen this bug.

I'm just wondering why this is resolved. I posted what was origionally
bug#789 and it was sent here as a duplicate of this #880. The fact remains
that I still can NOT install Mandrake 9.1 on my machine with a hpt374
controller even though the drives being used are connected to it as ATA133 and
not RAID. If I'm still at a dead-end on even installing, I'm curious as to
why this is 'resolved'.

apic IS off on my motherboard, but I still have the problem where RC1 says it
can't find the CDRom it is reading from, and none of the modules I tried
(which are available in the selection box which pops up after it tells you it
can't find the CD drive) make any difference.

I don't see anybody trying to boot with noapic on this bug. All potential fixes have
surrounded acpi, but I got similar errors on a Soyo board with an embedded hpt372
which works fine with the apic turned off. I am not talking about acpi=off but the
apic. Either disable it in the BIOS or start the linux kernel with noapic boot
parameter.

I remembered I hadn't re-flashed my bios after an incident last month, so i
just tried the beta3 again with the new bios (with the hpt374 updated to
1.22a). I got MUCH farther this time. I still couldn't install because it
said I didn't have a CDRom (even though it was reading from the CD !?!?), but
I checked in the logs, and it had found my hard drives just fine!

Installing 9.1 Beta3 fails on my computer. I am presented with the very first
screen and advised to choose 'enter' or type 'expert' or other specific
command, but no matter what I do, the computer spins for awhile, then reboots
to present me with the exact same screen again. My first drive is on the hpt374
controller, but I can't even use the 'expert' option to try another module.

Passing acpi=off at the install bootprompt solved this problem. No idea
why. Why would one want acpi for the install? And how would one work
this out other than by trial and error and experience of typical
Mandrake weaknesses?

Cheers,

Bruno Prior

Second drive is on the HPT372. So the HPT372 shouldn't really matter at
that stage of the installer, but something is screwing it up.

Incidentally, installation of 9.0 also fails, because the system claims
not to be able to find the CD-ROM drive (the one it is installing from)
and asks what SCSI module we want to load. ide-scsi etc. do not help.
Nor does passing ide=nodma or hdc=ide-cd.

Don't know if this is related to the original bug report, but the HPT372
seems to be trouble. We also cannot get hde running with a vanilla
2.4.20 kernel on gentoo. We are in the process of trying
2.4.21-pre4-ac1, in the hope the ac patch will help.

Hopefully, this

If anyone could give me some more explicite instructions, I could see if
this 'IDE Backport from AC kernel' would solve the problem I had that was
added to this bug report (789). Keep in mind though, that I have yet to get
anything installed. For me, the install freezes, so I need help knowing how

proprietary driver (see http://steletch.free.fr, section Matériel).
however with 9.0, the pc boots.
With 9.1 beta1, the installation wents fine, but the boot process hangs with a
kernel panic.
Everything went fine if i disable the raid chipset in the bios.
I also tried nodma and acpi stuff with no more luck.
The problem is the same ...

On the Linux Kernel somebody said about the HPT370 problem :

,
| Well it is about timing indeed. It turned out that as a result for
| a quest for speed, some time ago, I left the pci bus running as 35Mhz.
|
| As soon as I reset it to 33Mhz the attached drive was detected and
| kernel panics dissapeard. (Redhat kernel 2.4.18..., 2.4.20-ac1. )
| Other I have not tested.
`

Would be great if someone test and tell me if it works or not.

Sounds bad, i wil give a look to the kernel patch, some of you may be

With Iwill XP333-R, which uses the hpt372 onboard controller, I have been
building a kernel and the hpt driver to use a Maxtor and Seagate as jbod (sda,
sdb) on this controller. Following the kernel list infos about ac1 support for
this controller, I have built a 2.4.20-ac1. As hde and hdg, these disks seem to
be working well with this kernel: hdparm shows dma enabled; md5sum of isos
working correctly. I have not used this extensively but the success of these
rudimentary tests is in sharp contrast to the typical failure to mount with
previous Mandrake kernels.

patch applied and test ?

People who get problem with HPT370 and NFORCE2 ide i have a patch (cf:
bugzilla attach) and i did a tarball kernel to test it:

get the kernel from
https://qa.mandrakesoft.com/~chmou/kernel/kernel-2.4.21-pre3q1.tar.bz2

untar it with : tar tvjf kernel-2.4.21-pre3q1.tar.bz2 -C /
do a depmod -a and reconfigure your lilo/grub to reboot under this
kernel (you may have to regenerate also an initrd).

Report on bugzilla sucess/failure please.

Cheers.

With the Iwill XP333-R, hpt372 onboard controller, I installed
kernel-2.4.21-pre3q1.tar.bz2 and chmod a-x /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.21-pre3q1, as all
the x-bits were on, did depmod -a, mkinitrd, add grub entry and reboot.
Progress stopped during or just after disk identification (I saw something about
a floppy and queues(?)) with a kernel panic. Reset required. Picture taken of
screen at freeze is attached.

screen at freeze

While the last attempt with this kernel was on my 9.0 install, I tried this on
a 9.1beta2 install. Whereas I used simply depmod -a after installing
previously, this time I did
depmod -a 2.4.21-pre3q1 -F /boot/System.map-2.4.21-pre3q1
This time, the screen is somewhat different at freeze and, although it
references an ext2 /, this / is installed on reiserfs, if that matters.

OK. I pressed Esc at the Mandrake boot menu to get to the lilo boot prompt. I
tried all these:

linux ide=nodma
linux acpi=off
linux ide=nodma acpi=off

And I still got the debug nessage.

I also tried to boot with failsafe and I also got the debug message. It only had
this at the start:

hde: status error: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
hde: drive not ready for command
hde: 681472 sectors (349 MB) w/44KiB cache, CHS=88/88/88

an this added at the end:

spurious 8259A interrupt: IRQ7

If this helps, the drive connected to RAID controller is IBM DHEA-38451 ATA 33
and it has 8.45 GB.
