Re: [Cooker] CUPS 1.1.3
Oops, time to eat my hat again... It seems that latest samba packages from Mandrake do include smbspool, only they include it in samba- and not in samba-client.. My new problem with cups seems to be that hackkernel has a very strange version of smbfs, that refuses to connect with smbspool by smb://username:password@servername/share but rather demands smbclient or smbprint with '-I serverip' Anyone familiar with this problem? Moshe Vainer wrote: My mistake, i was talking all the time about smbspool, which is not included in mandrake. Too bad, since it is the only way to print from cups to smb printers... From the cups manual: quote Printing to Windows Servers CUPS can print to Windows servers in one of two ways. The first way uses the LPD protocol on the CUPS system and the "TCP/IP Printing Services" on the Windows system. You can find out more about this configuration in the LPD section earlier in this chapter. The second way is through the Microsoft Server Message Block ("SMB") protocol. Support for this protocol is provided with the free SAMBA software package. You can download SAMBA from: http://www.samba.org To configure CUPS for SAMBA, run the following command: ln -s `which smbspool` /usr/lib/cups/backend/smb ENTER The smbspool(1) program is provided with SAMBA starting with SAMBA 2.0.6. Once you have made the link you can configure your printers with one of the following device URIs: smb://workgroup/server/sharename /quote I already pointed this list to this problem once, to no avail. Redhat is doing a better job at this. This is even more strange, since cups is going to be the default printing system for Mandraks, IIRC. Rgrds, Moshe Vainer [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reinhard Katzmann wrote: Hi Moshe! Well actualy mandrake DOES include smbprint in its samba package, and I have it installed. Anyway, it is easily tested by the command you just provided, so to the original poster, you can use #rpm -qf /usr/bin/smbprint to see if you have smbprint in your samba-client package. Re: [Cooker] CUPS 1.1.3
Install the smb packages, they only need to be installed, the SMB daemon does not need to be running because you are only a client in your situation. Restart the CUPS daemon with /etc/rc.d/init.d/cups restart Now the configuration for the access to an SMB printer should work. I recommand using KUPS for doing the configuration. To install KUPS install QTCUPS because it is needed by KUPS. Take care that you have updated to the newest release of KUPS, older releases crash when you press any key. Start KUPS with kups or choosing Configuration/Printing/KUPS in the menu. In the KUPS window you click on the "Add printer" icon and get a dialog. Click on "Next" and choose the SMB printer connection. Enter login and password for the SMB server or choose "Guest account". On the next screen click on the "Scan" button to get a list of all SMB servers in your network. Choose the appropriate one and click on the small "+" at this entry. Then click on the desired printer and click "Next". On the next screens choose/enter the usual info (Manufacturer, model, queue name, description, location). After confirming on the last screen it should be possible to print on your SMB printer. If anyone knows how to cinfigure mandrake to print on smb printers I would be Work just fine at Office, I simply use smb://server/printer, you have to enable printing and accepting jobs. Sorry, I don't have the config here, but tomorrow I can post it. At Office there is a HPLaserjet 5MP. I used printerdrake to configure the printer there. Also smb seems to have problems when a windows user is printing just in the same time when you try to print and the printer setting might be set back to "printing disabled" (happened twice for me now). You probably need smbprint which should come with samba-client, but mandrake does not include it. Install samba-client from redhat's development ftp and you should be ok..
