[Cooker] New distro install idea to attract more users

2000-05-28 Thread Con Kolivas

Now I've installed Mandrake for about 6 people. These people are all windows
converts who are not very good with PCs. What they want and should have
when they use their machines are much less than the recommended install
offers, yet more than the minimum install.

These people need all of KDE and no other wms installed. They also need all
the *drak* configuration software, netscape communicator and some sort of
office suite. They need NOTHING else. Unfortunately it takes quite some time
for me to filter through all the other unneeded stuff whenever I install
Mandrake for them.

Lesson: newbies need one fully featured window manager with configuration
utilities, a web browser/email client and then they can install an office
suite (eg star office, corel etc.) Everything else confuses them AND takes
up unnecessary space.

It would be great to have a "BASIC DESKTOP" install which did this (ie about
as much as you get with a pre-installed windows PC.)

regards,
Con.

Keep up the good work.

I agree with this - no one needs more than 1 email client, and yet it seems
like 4 get installed be default and another 10 are waiting in the wings (OK I
know I'm exagerating, but ...).

mainly install in "Recommended" (is now "Automated") on a 400MB partition and
that will do it :)

Thanks, I'll try that. I've been doing expert installs since I was the one
installing it (I'm no expert but I like to think I am :-)). Didn't consider
that recommended might be just what I needed. It doesn't let me fiddle with
the other settings though... Probably a good thing eh?

Con

I just have a discussion with a SuSe user which recently switch to a mandrake.
He regrets Yast (a all-in-one conf tool). I know there is drakxtools. It
will be a great idea to integreate a link to it in all default wm conf.
