ok, that is an obvious nonsense. I guess I will make modprobe
to include modprobe.default automatically instead of relying
on including it out of modporbe.conf.

generating it this way is WRONG. some modules have changed, some
pre/postinstall scripts have changed or not needed any more.

module-init-tools supplies modprobe.default that accounts for these
changes (tries to). So as suggested, remove module-init-tools, remove
modprobe.conf, reinstall module-init-tools and check the difference.
It will be more clean and easy to maintain.

yep. so far you have alias for eth0 it should work. Apparently
just module is missing.

BTW compiling 21.6 is much more pleasant and more fast than 2.4 :)
And new make xconfig is quite nice.

you are right, at least some words about module-init-tools and
"generate-modprobe.conf is evil" seem to be needed. Or at least
generate-modprobe.conf should be changed to not include standard
aliases/config by default (as it does during module-init-tools install).

if you still have problems after compiling pcnet32 - send me as much
information as you can privately. first check if it loads (and works)
using modprobe pcnet32 , then modprobe eth0 then try to find out why
it does not load automatically.

[Cooker] Two questions -

2003-08-10 Thread Robert Fox
1) I reported earlier that xcdroast was segfaulting - I am running the latest cooker
in VMware but can't test it.
Could someone please check if xcdroast works now?

2) Just wondering about ReiserFS4 - it's supposed to be finished very soon. Any
chance of adding it into Cooker as an experimental option?
I have read that it is incredibly fast! I think some people (like myself) would like
to put it through its paces.

I installed first a basic Cooker with normal kernel (under VMware) and
then did a "urpmi kernel-2.6" which installed both the kernel and the
module-init-tools. I then edited /etc/lilo/conf and added the new
kernel entry. I also did a "mkinird -f initrd-2.6.0 2.6.0-0.test2.1mdk"

When I rebooted the VM, I chose the Kernel-2.6 entry and it started
booting. The system seemed to boot fine but I discovered no ethernet
loaded. So I determined that the pcnet32 modules wasn't loaded.

Sorry for the limited information. This is the first time I have run
the 2.6 - I was waiting for the Mandrake RPMS before I tried because i
wanted to avoid having to recompile kernels (I've done this in the past
with mixed results and it's very time consuming)

I guess the reason I asked about a "how-to" was just to give people a
basic understanding of what to expect from the 2.6Test2 kernel in Cooker
and how to use it (in very basic terms). In order to get more people
testing it, it should be as easy to install and use like the 2.4 kernel
series.

I just saw a new kernel-2.6.0-test2.2mdk and downloaded it. After
de-installing and re-installing the modprobe-init-tools and the new
kernel, re-creating the initrd and then update lilo.conf

IT WORKS!! I now have a 2.6 kernel up and running WITH ethernet up!

I get the feeling that the 2.6 kernel is FASTER under VMware - but I

generate-modprobe.conf /etc/modprobe.conf. This is the 2.6 equivalent to

first of all have you installed cooker version or compiled from
sources?

> module-init-tools was installed already.

if you *installed* current module-init-tools (as opposed to
updating it) /etc/modprobe.conf is generated automatically.

Otherwise I suggest removing module-init-tools, removing (or backing
up /etc/modprobe.conf) and installing it again. Simply
running generate-modprobe.conf produces overwhelming number of
entries most of which are provided as default.

by default it just spits output to stdout so it is not of much use.
Would you mind showing /etc/modprobe.conf?

Module seems to exist but I have no idea if it even compiles.
Try CONFIG_PCNET32 (surprise :) If it compiles and works, tell
Olivier to include it in its package.

Theoretically there should not be any need for such how to because you
just install kernel 2.6 package and run it. To make it possible much more user
feedback is needed. Ideally this feedback should provide slightly more information
than "I tried it and it does not work" :)))

The driver may not support ifplugd, have you tried unchecking the "network

No, everybody "on cooker" != everybody who will either download/buy the
distro..

Please, understand we can't just add new features which might broke just
because they are fancy..

I did add freetype2 support in mozilla for Mdk 9.0 and it was a HUGE
mistake because some people got broken rendering and I never understood
why exactly..

Freetype2 is a real "sensitive" package, because it is now used to all
major toolkits to do font rendering.. This is I now have a very
conservative approach regarding this package..

How so ? I only respond to GNOME/XFT/Freetype/ messages.. I don't have time to read ALL cooker messages.. And

I *DO* use cooker. And it is not fixed - try to go to that (any) site in
the bug report - http://underground.cz ; the coding is fixed (Mozilla
will use iso-8859-2 correctly), but if you manually switch to UTF-8,
still the same - mostly empty lines.

This bugs me from time to time on arbitary sites than happen to have an
"unsupported" char in the middle of a line of text.

I only replace Cooker XFree86 drivers with GATOS ones, as I need video
recording and TV capabilities, but I don't think it matters.

Because I fixed this a LOOONG time ago :)

Also, do you plan to use freetype2-2.1.4 once it comes out (currently at
rc1) or at least integrate the once discussed hack into 2.1.3, in spite
of feature freeze? The rendering difference is *really* worth it.

I won't integrate hacks from Freetype CVS in our Freetype (except if some
fonts don't load with our Freetype)..

I don't think Freetype 2.1.4 will be in Mdk 9.1, except if it is released
this week..

Now that would be pity - I used the hack for some time, it is very
stable and current Cooker rendering just looks mediocre when compared :-(.

But it's your decision - I hope someone will release an updated rpm
then, so that font rendering is pleasant again.

Michal

Hi Frederic/Cooker,

could you please comment on this bug?

http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=182650

Also, do you plan to use freetype2-2.1.4 once it comes out (currently at
rc1) or at least integrate the once discussed hack into 2.1.3, in spite
of feature freeze? The rendering difference is *really* worth it.

Thanks,

Michal
