I have used dhcp with a cable modem and it works perfectly. However the
autodetect routine on oxygen seems to be a little off It detected my
friends card as a boomerang instead of a 3c59x based card this caused
dhcp to fail. I changed the module to the right one and everything owrked
fine. So I suggest checking the module getting loaded to make sure its
agreeing with your Nic's chipset.

Well, it's not that you can't use DHCP with a cable modem, I don't think you can use
DHCP with a network card... Or actually you can I guess If windows does it, then
you can. If cable is like DSL then all the cable modem is a converter to ethernet.
It doesn't even have an IP Unless he has a router, but it doensn't look like it.

Thats wrong. DHCP works on my cable modem just
fine. All you do is select your Eternet card from a list and it asks you if you
want to use DHCP and you anwser yes. Thats how I do my installs of
linux.
And to add to that, my IP is dynamic.

I used to use RoadRunner with Linux (Now I just get access through the
network)
and it did require DHCP, but it had it's own dhcp client and login
script...
I dunno about @HOME tho. Most cable modems do _not_ have static IPs.
They may
stay the same for months at a time, but they could change.

You need to make sure you set your IP address, and your gateway That should
do it. I'm not sure how you can do DHCP with a cable modem. Just set it as a static
if it never changes. But also make sure you have your default gateway set also.

That should do it. You will also need your gateway to probably be set.
