jeremy in #ppclinux on irc.openprojects.net said he had it working by just
doing modprobe dmasound_pmac when he was running that kernel.

I had plans on compiling ALSA from cvs, but if this works I rather do a
kernel upgrade. 2.4.9 also has some rather significant bugfixes compared
to the ancient 2.4.4 that is shipping. Not to forget the huge VM fixes
coming in .10 now.

You got some details what the dma sound support is? I know what DMA is,
but what is ALSA using then?

Titanium Install

2001-09-20 Thread Ben Reser

Well I finally redid my Titanium to the finaly distribution.

* The boot actually gave me a chance to choose what video to use (i.e. I
got a boot prompt).

* The video mode at the boot prompt didn't work unless I booted via open
firmware. Weird. But progress was made.

* I'm continuing to use my hackish way of installing netscape. And the
keymap issue that I was getting from netscape and real audio is gone.
Wahoo!

* Still didn't realize I had 1152x768. But it's easy to fix by change
the XF86Config-4.

Looks like a lot of stuff was fixed in the Finaly. Bravo!

Yes - RPM included.

 Is there support for french-canadian keyboard. I installed using Can

There is a French keyboard map - French-Canadian, no.

 How well is behaving Netatalk in Mandrake. I'm thinking of running it

IIRC there is an option to store lists of like people you hate (bitchx

the library to connect to a MySQL database which is in MySQL-shared.

weird disk problems

2001-09-20 Thread Chris Mann

Hi, I'm trying to install a new maxtor 80gig drive in my umax j700 with a
turbomax card runnning mandrake 8.0, but i'm having some problems that i
can't figure out. was hoping somewhere here might have some ideas.

first i tried diskdrake, but i got an illegal division by zero error
whenever i tried to format that drive. so i switched to fdisk and besides
the fact that it mentioned something about 9964 cylinders instead of 4096,
everything seemed to work. set one primary partition and that was it.
formatted with mke2fs and everything seemed fine (although i wonder how
necessary it is to reserve 5% of the disk space for the superuser. on an
80GB drive, this is a big chunk?).

but disk performance seemed fairly slow, so i ran hdparm to see what the
settings on the disk where and this is what i get:
[]# hdparm /dev/hdg
/dev/hdg1:
multcount = 0 (off)
I/O support = 0 (default 16-bit)
unmaskirq = 0 (off)
using_dma = 1 (on)
keepsettings = 0 (off)
nowerr  = 0 (off)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 8 (on)
HDIO_GETGEO_BIG failed: Input/output error

[]# hdparm -i /dev/hdg
/dev/hdg:
Model=Maxtor 4W080H6, FwRev=AAH41310, SerialNo-W6043SXC
Config={ Fixed }
RawCHS=16383/16/63, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=57
BuffType=DualPortCache, BuffSize=2048kB, MaxMultSec=16, MultSect=off
CurCHS=16383/16/63, CurSects=-66060037, LBA=yes, LBAsects=160086528
IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:120,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120}
PIO modes: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4
DMA modes: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2 udma0 udma1 *udma2 udma3 udma4 udma5
AdvancedPM=yes: disabled (255)
Drive Supports: ATA/ATAPI-6 T13 1410D revision 0 : ATA-1 ATA-2
ATA-3 ATA-4 ATA-5 ATA-6

i'm not quite sure why it can't get the geometry of the drive. when i run
this on the other drive attached to the turbomax card, i have the same
problem. trying to run it on the scsi disk is even worse. so i'm wondering
if there's something wrong with hdparm or what?

also, now when i run diskdrake just to check out the drive, it says that i
have two paritions, one 530 GB and one 1TB. which is obviously not right.

this is the partition table from fdisk
Disk /dev/hdg: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 9964 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdg1  1 9964 80035798+ 83 Linux

like i said, the drive seems to be working okay, just slow. but all this
weird info kinda worries me. should i just ignore it all?

thanks

ppc install freeze on beige g3

2001-09-20 Thread Xavier

I'm having a problem booting into the install program on a beige
(olworld) G3. I have bootx properly installed. But unless I choose the
no video driver option, I get stuck immediatly as soon as boot into
Linux begins, on a black screen with some system specs. Choosing no
video driver I get to the screen wehre I choose the install source
methods (i.e. FTP, cd, etc.). After choosing cd, the progress bar
slides past, loads second stage install and then takes me to a blank
screen, beige background with a sort of cross-hatch pattern where it
stays. After about 10-15min a blue rectangle appears on the lower right
hand corner (where the explanations during the install process would
show up) and stays there indefinately.

What can I do?

You need to try one of the other install modes, worst case, text install.
Look at yaboot.conf in the boot directory at the append options to try.
