Re: BootX replacement
You can also use yaboot for OldWorld machines. I have LinuxPPC distribution. The installation CD has yaboot in System folder which also contains 286 bytes long "Finder" file. I can boot this CD on my OldWorld PM 7300. Robert Stew Benedict wrote ŇRe: BootX replacementÓ. [06/Jul/2001Fri 15:21] > > As far as I know BootX development has mostly stopped. regarding the HFS module, I'll try again.. networking complains about the hostname not being found..I am on a network connected with a cable modem..we have DHCP set up so I figured the installler would have no problems setting it up. I'll look again next time I'm fooling with mandrak..I'm close to giving up with the beta version :P regarding Voodoo 3 support..do you think if I plonked the tdfx.o module in I would be able to use the tdfx setting inside XF86Config-4? Ack - Sorry, I guess that was not good advice. I forgot, you're on an OldWorld machine - you don't actually need the initrd probably, if you had a USB keyboard you see why it's around. HFS support is as a module. I know early on it was left out, but I thought it had gotten picked up by the time the ISO's were made. Do you get any kind of errors on setting up the ethernet? Re: BootX replacement
I get dumped into a console because I don't have the tdfx module..using the fbdev module makes my screen half size with the colours all wrong..gonna try some modules I downloaded earlier. in the vmlinux packaged with the cd there doesn't seem to be support for hfs filesystems, or is this something with my setup...which right now looks pretty bad :P I also don't have network access..I have two cards, the motherboard one and a Farralon one. It detects both but can't use them. Telneting to myself works though. what exactly does this initrd file you directed me towards do? Re: BootX replacement
I'm surprised it attempted the dual-head setup too ;^) This is probably something you'll need to setup manually. If it was referring to XFree68-FBDev, that is part of XF3, the new driver in XF4 is just fbdev. I have no experience with xinerama, so I'm not much help there. You can replace your ramdisk all.gz with the initrd image on my web space. http://mandrakesoft.com/~sbenedict/ Stew On Sat, 7 Jul 2001, Malik Gibbons Hansen wrote: > It's installed so far..should work. Re: BootX replacement
It's installed so far..should work. A bug in the installer froze the mouse during installation but it worked the second time. I created the bootstrap partition aswell. I was amazed that the installer recognized my dualhead configuration but it was dissapointing that I could not set up my Voodoo 2 because XFree86-Fdev (or somehing like that) couldn't be found..will this be something I can fix later? Also, since I have dualhead, but am not currently using the second monitor, should I set each monitor up independently or use the xinerama extension? Currently I am trying to set up miBoot to stop using the ramdisk everytime I boot, I'll look around for what the correct syntax for setting up boot variables in the miBoot CMDL resource. Re: BootX replacement
New ISO's are not out yet. I set them up Friday but was reminded that there are security updates I did not include. The individual files on the mirrors reflect the changes. Are you trying to use existing partitions? You could just delete the partitions with the MacOS version of pdisk and let the installer create the bootstrap anyway (it's only 1MB). Also make sure you don't have any "holes" in the partition table (this is also fixed now) Stew On Sat, 7 Jul 2001, Malik Gibbons Hansen wrote: > okay, I am now using myboot successfully (sort of)...I just copied an > existing 9.0 system folder and replaced the Finder and System suitcase > with miboots, changed some of the resources as described on that page > (all.gz from the BootX folder seems okay going into the root directory > with vmlinux, just specify all.gz to be used in the STR# resource)..the > linux installer boots great but of course I get to the part where it tells > me there is not enough space for the Bootstrap partition to be created. > This problem was mentioned earlier and you said the new images should skip > tat part? does that count for all mirrors, so all I have to do is download > that file again? > > Malik > > Never argue with an idiot. Re: BootX replacement
okay, I am now using myboot successfully (sort of)...I just copied an existing 9.0 system folder and replaced the Finder and System suitcase with miboots, changed some of the resources as described on that page (all.gz from the BootX folder seems okay going into the root directory with vmlinux, just specify all.gz to be used in the STR# resource)..the linux installer boots great but of course I get to the part where it tells me there is not enough space for the Bootstrap partition to be created. This problem was mentioned earlier and you said the new images should skip tat part? does that count for all mirrors, so all I have to do is download that file again? Malik Never argue with an idiot. Re: BootX replacement
hehe, happens to all of us :) I'd read a guide on miBoot on Suse linux homepage and I just tried your link but the one stage that messes me up is the 'blessing the system folder' part. I copy the miboot files into a folder on an HFS partition but cannot bless it..know of any blessing issues that might be mucking things up? Malik Never argue with an idiot. /stew kicks self... Hmm, didn't even pay attetion to that. I would have to do some research to figure it out myself. www.imaclinux.net may have some stuff on it, but it's been down for a couple of weeks after an equipment move. It seems that miBoot is included with the BootX version on the first Mandrake iso...I do not know how to use it however as it has no instructions provided :P Malik Never argue with an idiot. Re: BootX replacement
No it's not =(. If you come across a packaged version, or would care to package it, we'd be happy to include it though for others. I don't have an OldWorld machine to try it out on. Re: BootX replacement
yeah, I'm running 9.1 on an oldworld machine. I remember having some issues with LinuxPPC when using BootX. is miboot included with the Mandrak 8.0 beta? Malik Never argue with an idiot. Re: BootX replacement
As far as I know BootX development has mostly stopped. Yaboot is the boot method of choice for NewWorld machines, as it does not require you to run MacOS before running Linux, whih can sometimes create problems on the Linux side. Are you running 9.1 on an OldWorld machine? I briefly played with quik when I first started with PPC, with little success, but hopefully I know a bit more about Open Firmware now ;^). There is also miboot. Stew Benedict On Fri, 6 Jul 2001, Malik Gibbons Hansen wrote: > Hi; > > I was just wondering if there was any effort at all to make BootX > compatible with OS 9.1? BootX replacement
Hi; I was just wondering if there was any effort at all to make BootX compatible with OS 9.1? Was 9.1 really that different from 9.0? If not, I heard about something called quik, anyone got any experience with that? Malik Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level then beat you with experience.
