I can understand doing that in your own home, but not in someone else's. If
you tell someone, specifically, to put things back where you got them from,
and if they don't know where something should go, ask you, they should do as
you ask. If they don't follow directions on a regular basis, and continue
to put things where they don't belong after you have brought this to their
attention numerous times, then you are justified in not having them work for
you anymore. Also, let their employer, if they are working for an agency,
know why you let them go.

Yeah, I fired a housekeeper because she kept putting things where she
thought they should go and I couldn't find them. Since then I've trained
roommates to find things, and there's always a bit of a learning curve. I
can understand it, as before I lost my sight I put things wherever they
fit too.

I know there's a rule about how long dropped food can stay on the floor, but I
can't remember if it's five minutes or five seconds. I usually look for the
dropped food with my hands. I noticed people who help me use a broom and dust
pan. That makes more sense for a blind person, except for the dust part.
Happy blueberry hunting,

I'm really surprised that when this topic was discussed a while back, nobody
mentioned my biggest problem. That is dropping and/or knocking things over.
I always try to put the lids back on things when they are not actually in use,
but I do fear knocking the thing over while I'm reaching for the lid to put
back on. Fortunately, I am not a coffee drinker so I do not knock mugs over
unless they are my reader's when I'm reaching to hand her something.
Sighted people have this problem to some extent too, because my reader says
that from actual experience the worst things to drop are blueberries. Isn't it
fun to think you have them all, and then later when you've forgotten all about
them, you step on one so you have a blue spot on the floor and your footwear.
Cherry tomatoes and grapes are second and third in line. And have you had the
pleasure of trying to clean up spilled salad dressing or oil? What brings this
up is that this morning I knocked over my container of pistachios while I was
nibbling on a few. Well, first I had to put my guide dog in her crate, and my
pet dog outside because my guide dog is a lab so she thinks vacuum cleaner is
in her job description. Then I crawled around for about 15 minutes picking up
pistachios. I actually did very well because when the dogs were allowed back,
I only heard about 8 or 9 crunches.
I hope this gives you all a good laugh because I really don't think I am the
only one who has this problem so I think you can sympathize and maybe elaborate
on the subject. And I might as well ask a question. If something like a
blueberry, pistachio or tomato falls on the floor but has not been squashed, do
you throw it out or do you wash it of and use it?

Losing something you just had in your hand a second ago will drive you
crazy!

"Where did I put it?" I have asked myself a million times it seems.

It especially gets on my nerves when we have to stop recording a Cooking
in the Dark show so I can find what I just had in my hand...

To help me keep my blood pressure down, I have tried to teach myself to
put things back where they go after I have used them

I am still trying to teach myself this.
Getting better but I did lose the hot sauce today...

I have taught myself to lean my cooking utensil, spoon, spatula, tongs,
etc, in the sink...

actually I lean them in the front left and corner of my sink.
That way when I need to grab the utensil, I always know where they
are...

Keep on trucking Jerry!
Heck, once when I was making a meat loaf, I accidentally added a package
of vanilla pudding...I thought it was my bag of onion and mushroom soup
mix...
Anyway, that meat loaf was sweet and it was orange! I did not figure out
why it was that way until after dinner...my wife still won't let me live
that one down ! (grin)

use, but I do fear knocking the thing over while I'm reaching for the lid to
put back on. Fortunately, I am not a coffee drinker so I do not knock mugs
over unless they are my reader's when I'm reaching to hand her something.
Sighted people have this problem to some extent too, because my reader says
that from actual experience the worst things to drop are blueberries. Isn't
it fun to think you have them all, and then later when you've forgotten all
about them, you step on one so you have a blue spot on the floor and your
footwear. Cherry tomatoes and grapes are second and third in line. And
have you had the pleasure of trying to clean up spilled salad dressing or
oil? What brings this up is that this morning I knocked over my container
of pistachios while I was nibbling on a few. Well, first I had to put my
guide dog in her crate, and my pet dog outside because my guide dog is a lab
so she thinks vacuum cleaner is in her job description. Then I crawled
around for about 15 minutes picking up pistachios. I actually did very well
because when the dogs were allowed back, I only heard about 8 or 9 crunches.
I hope this gives you all a good laugh because I really don't think I am the
only one who has this problem so I think you can sympathize and maybe
elaborate on the subject. And I might as well ask a question. If something
like a blueberry, pistachio or tomato falls on the floor but has not been
squashed, do you throw it out or do you wash it of and use it?

What makes matters even worse is when you drop! something! and! it! rolls!
sometimes, in another room, and then my 3 little furries might snatch it up
as a toy, like they did one Thanksgiving with the little colorful lid from
the can of Reddi Whip! no one could find it, and a few months later, they
must have discovered it, decided to play with it and it was on my bed. one
of my sons found it.

Hi,

The main thing with spices is when you buy one label it. I don't always do
this, and the one thing I have messed up the most, but haven't for a long
time is stuffing. I used to make my own. Once I put nutmeg in it instead
of sage, and once chili powder. I was just smelling it instead of labeling
the spices. You know, for some reason those stuffings were still eateible.
We all mess up in the kitchen sometimes. It can be frustrating though.

Ah, yes. Distractions, disorganization are the biggest things that keep
me

from cooking anything other than microwavable Trader Joe's frozen dimmers.
It is beyond my frustration tolerance to be making linguini with clam
sauce

and I can't find the damn garlic.

Sometimes when I get home from grocery shopping, my driver finds all the
spices and utensils and puts them on the counter with the food. A big
tray

is a great idea. I would have to remember to put things on it after I use
them.

My mom, who is sighted, has had a few interesting cooking mishaps.
Years ago, when I was in high school, she accidentally seasoned cream
gravy with cinnamon instead of black pepper.

Just the other day, my sighted husband bought me zucchini that was
mislabeled as cucumbers. I couldn't figure out why those cucumbers
didn't taste good. Not until several hours later did I realize they were
actually zucchini! The stem should have clued me in before I even
started slicing, but it's been a long time since I ate healthy enough to
bother purchasing much fresh produce. :)

Re: [CnD] Frustrations in the kitchen sometimes

2015-01-31 Thread Sandy via Cookinginthedark
Not that often, but it easily could, as I age! I get into small troubles
when I rush and get nervous. Like the time I was preparing a batter years
ago for corn dogs, and accidentally grabbed the tupperware container
containing Nestlee's Quick, instead of the one with the self-rising
cornmeal, grrr. had to throw out that mess. another time I grabbed cocoa or
something and put some in my white flour gravy with the sausage grease or
bacon grease, and it turned into a kid delight: chocolate gravy!
My mishaps are when I come home from the grocery store, and am rushing to
get stuff all sorted and put away; the checkout crew does not make matters
easy, either, when they haphazardly put say, Mex. blend grated cheese with
toilet paper, paper towels, Tide Pods, sheesh! then one pack of lunch meat
in with milk and fruit juices, and the other pack of cold cuts in a bag with
breakfast/granola bars. no semblance of order. I had a bag of Near East
tabouleh mix, which should go in the cupboard, and a bag of Mex. blend
cheese. My son caught the error as he was rushing to help me sort it
quickly, as we had to leave to go somewhere else; I told him where I wanted
the stuff, that went smoothly, but I said I could not find the tabouleh
salad mix, and he handed it to me. I said I thought one of the packs of it
was already in the closet! he looked, and it was! my Mexican blend cheese!
so, it happens to the best of us.

Hi all.
So sometimes when Im cooking, I forget where I set things down like the
garlic or a bottle of sauce. The other day I was frying some corn taco
shells and kept losing the tongs. Sometimes...or most of the time the kids
will need me for something and I get distracted. Does this happen to any of

Ah, yes. Distractions, disorganization are the biggest things that keep me
from cooking anything other than microwavable Trader Joe's frozen dimmers.
It is beyond my frustration tolerance to be making linguini with clam sauce
and I can't find the damn garlic.

Sometimes when I get home from grocery shopping, my driver finds all the
spices and utensils and puts them on the counter with the food. A big tray
is a great idea. I would have to remember to put things on it after I use
them.

Re: [CnD] Frustrations in the kitchen sometimes

2015-01-30 Thread Paula and James Muysenberg via Cookinginthedark
I've always been bad about forgetting where I put stuff, whether
for cooking or anything else. Someone once suggested that I make mental
notes to myself, e.g.: "I'm setting the lid to this bottle just to the
right of this saucer, near the top edge."

I don't always remember to do that, but when I do, it helps. Also,
as Nicole mentioned, preparing before you start can really lower your
stress. I like to gather all my ingredients in one place. As I use them,
I move them to another predetermined spot. I'm a real slowpoke in the
kitchen, but getting things ready beforehand makes meal prep go more
smoothly.

Another time-saver I sometimes use is to fill one sink with soapy
water before I start on a recipe. For utensils that can't go in the
dishwasher, or that are not very dirty, I just rinse them a little and
drop them into my water to soap. I can then wash them up quickly, when I
have a minute, and clean up the counters with my soapy rag.

Re: [CnD] Frustrations in the kitchen sometimes

2015-01-30 Thread Nicole Massey via Cookinginthedark
No, but I'm very careful where things go. I do a lot of prep work, put
things in specific order, and keep a dish for utensils next to the stove
when I'm cooking. I also tell everyone to get out of the kitchen when I'm
working and I won't start cooking anything more than just heating something
up in the microwave if there's anyone else in there.
I learned this from my ex. We kept a wicker basket by the door, and car keys
went in that basket when we walked in the house. In seven and a half years
of marriage neither one of us lost our keys in the house. Intention is the
crux of the solution here -- don't put something down in a random place,
make it sit where you want it to be, and make sure there's some logic to it.
For instance, when I'm cooking something I'll line up the ingredients in
order of what goes in when, and then I'll add them and move things up so I
know what's next. Often I can also rinse things and put them in the
dishwasher while I'm working, so the kitchen is almost as clean when I'm
done as when I started.
It's about creating a process, whatever one works for you, and following it.
I've gotten a lot more ordered since I lost my sight, that's for sure.
