Re: [CnD] Frustrations in the kitchen sometimes
I can understand doing that in your own home, but not in someone else's. If you tell someone, specifically, to put things back where you got them from, and if they don't know where something should go, ask you, they should do as you ask. If they don't follow directions on a regular basis, and continue to put things where they don't belong after you have brought this to their attention numerous times, then you are justified in not having them work for you anymore. Also, let their employer, if they are working for an agency, know why you let them go. --- Be positive! Re: [CnD] Frustrations in the kitchen sometimes, and Blueberries
I know there's a rule about how long dropped food can stay on the floor, but I can't remember if it's five minutes or five seconds. I usually look for the dropped food with my hands. I noticed people who help me use a broom and dust pan. That makes more sense for a blind person, except for the dust part. I'm really surprised that when this topic was discussed a while back, nobody mentioned my biggest problem. That is dropping and/or knocking things over. What brings this up is that this morning I knocked over my container of pistachios while I was nibbling on a few. Well, first I had to put my guide dog in her crate, and my pet dog outside because my guide dog is a lab so she thinks vacuum cleaner is in her job description. Then I crawled around for about 15 minutes picking up pistachios. I actually did very well because when the dogs were allowed back, I only heard about 8 or 9 crunches. I hope this gives you all a good laugh because I really don't think I am the only one who has this problem so I think you can sympathize and maybe elaborate on the subject. And I might as well ask a question. If something like a blueberry, pistachio or tomato falls on the floor but has not been squashed, do you throw it out or do you wash it of and use it? Re: [CnD] Frustrations in the kitchen sometimes
Hi, The main thing with spices is when you buy one label it. I don't always do this, and the one thing I have messed up the most, but haven't for a long time is stuffing. I used to make my own. Once I put nutmeg in it instead of sage, and once chili powder. I was just smelling it instead of labeling the spices. You know, for some reason those stuffings were still eateible. We all mess up in the kitchen sometimes. It can be frustrating though. Re: [CnD] Frustrations in the kitchen sometimes
My mom, who is sighted, has had a few interesting cooking mishaps. Years ago, when I was in high school, she accidentally seasoned cream gravy with cinnamon instead of black pepper. Just the other day, my sighted husband bought me zucchini that was mislabeled as cucumbers. I couldn't figure out why those cucumbers didn't taste good. Not until several hours later did I realize they were actually zucchini! The stem should have clued me in before I even started slicing, but it's been a long time since I ate healthy enough to bother purchasing much fresh produce. :) Paula On 1/31/2015 2:01 AM, Sandy via Cookinginthedark wrote: Not that often, but it easily could, as I age! Dear Dale, Hope all is well and thank you for your messages and hospitality on the list. I love reading the posts and do not want to miss a one of them. Therefor, would/could you resubscribe me to a new email address, please? I received a new computer for Christmas and am unable to use my earthlink account now. My new email address is malyn1...@verizon.net. Many thanks in advance. Re: [CnD] Frustrations in the kitchen sometimes
I've always been bad about forgetting where I put stuff, whether for cooking or anything else. Someone once suggested that I make mental notes to myself, e.g.: "I'm setting the lid to this bottle just to the right of this saucer, near the top edge." I don't always remember to do that, but when I do, it helps. Also, as Nicole mentioned, preparing before you start can really lower your stress. I like to gather all my ingredients in one place. As I use them, I move them to another predetermined spot. I'm a real slowpoke in the kitchen, but getting things ready beforehand makes meal prep go more smoothly. Another time-saver I sometimes use is to fill one sink with soapy water before I start on a recipe. For utensils that can't go in the dishwasher, or that are not very dirty, I just rinse them a little and drop them into my water to soap. I can then wash them up quickly, when I have a minute, and clean up the counters with my soapy rag. Re: [CnD] Frustrations in the kitchen sometimes
Well this is telling on myself. Hank is much more organized. He usually sets stuff on a tray and can find ingredients and utensils. I like to set utensils in a certain part of the sink everytime. My biggest problem is I forget and wash my hands with soap and water and well you know how awful a dish can taste after. ___ Cookinginthedark mailing list Cookinginthedark@acbradio.org http://acbradio.org/mailman/listinfo/cookinginthedark

Oh yes, Jeri. I've certainly had my share of disasters in the kitchen. Like Dale, I've learned to make a special effort of putting things exactly where I got them. Sometimes, though, if things get a bit chaotic, I still goof up. Sigh. Colleen ___ Cookinginthedark mailing list Cookinginthedark@acbradio.org http://acbradio.org/mailman/listinfo/cookinginthedark

Re: [CnD] Frustrations in the kitchen sometimes
No, but I'm very careful where things go. I do a lot of prep work, put things in specific order, and keep a dish for utensils next to the stove when I'm cooking. I also tell everyone to get out of the kitchen when I'm working and I won't start cooking anything more than just heating something up in the microwave if there's anyone else in there. I learned this from my ex. We kept a wicker basket by the door, and car keys went in that basket when we walked in the house. In seven and a half years of marriage neither one of us lost our keys in the house. Intention is the crux of the solution here -- don't put something down in a random place, make it sit where you want it to be, and make sure there's some logic to it. For instance, when I'm cooking something I'll line up the ingredients in order of what goes in when, and then I'll add them and move things up so I know what's next. Often I can also rinse things and put them in the dishwasher while I'm working, so the kitchen is almost as clean when I'm done as when I started. It's about creating a process, whatever one works for you, and following it. I've gotten a lot more ordered since I lost my sight, that's for sure. > -Original Message- > From: Cookinginthedark [mailto:cookinginthedark-boun...@acbradio.org] > On Behalf Of Jeri Milton via Cookinginthedark > Sent: Friday, January 30, 2015 12:48 PM > To: cookinginthedark@acbradio.org > Subject: [CnD] Frustrations in the kitchen sometimes > > Hi all. > So sometimes when Im cooking, I forget where I set things down like the > garlic or a bottle of sauce.
