[Coworking] Re: La Cantine & Co-working Paris

2007-09-26 Thread caguiton

Hi everyone,

The things are going well in Paris!
The contract was signed at the beginning of September (more than 300
square meters, in a XIXeen century "passage"), we're working with an
architect and we are planing to have an official opening before mid
December.
There is a group in Facebook, "La Cantine - coworking space à Paris",
in French, sorry :)
and we'll have soon somephotos, maps, etc.

One thing also that needs to be realized is I believe most readers can
determine for themselves what is Spam and what isn't. One or two
times can be dismissed. However, if this poster continues to do it,
then a mod can just filter their posting.

Although this post was self-promoting, it was also beneficial to
anyone interested in office space/coworking space in Seattle; and that
is what we want to happen, right?

Remember that the readers here are intelligent and will screen what
they read.

Just my two cents.

[Coworking] Coworking Map

2007-09-26 Thread James Bentley

Hello All:

New to this group and coworking in general and unfortunately there
isn't any spaces here in Columbus, OH. But there are a few of us
interested and that is all it will take.

I am more of a visual guy and thought it would be great to have a map
of all of the "operating" spaces in the US (and the world). I started
a project in Google Map and was asked to get others opinions on
whether this would be helpful. I only have the Western States right
now but will add the rest if people will use it.
I have been told (and shown) that there is a new, upcoming coworking
site to be launched sometime soon (hopefully) that has this feature in
it but since it isn't up yet, my feeble attempt will have to do.
Also, Google has some limitations with being able to order the
mappoints but try this link and let everyone know what you think. (no
rhyme intended).

Link:

Note: The difference in markers represent coworking spaces vs more
traditional type workspaces and hybrids.

James Bentley

James,

What you say sounds very reasonable. In practice it turns out not
to work well, though. Spam attracts spam, and once even a small
amount is allowed in unchallenged the signal to noise ratio drops
off alarmingly.

And that message _totally_ looked like spam, even if it didn't turn
out to be quite as spammy as it appeared on first glance.

I now return to lurking.

[Coworking] Re: Coworking Map

2007-09-26 Thread James Bentley

Tara:

I guess I didn't make myself clear... the different map markers
signify the types of workspaces. The blue ones should be most
coworking (if not, I can modify) and the pink pushpins are more
executive suites type. Since I am only going by the wiki, it is a
little difficult to decipher what is truly coworking.

Once I get the other sites added, I will post and ask for comments/
modifications. The way I am using Google Maps probably isn't the best
anyways... but this will get us through until you can launch the other
site.

Thanks for the comments.

[Coworking] Re: Spacious, modern

2007-09-26 Thread Chris Messina

Thanks Chris.

And James, to build on what you said, I might ask that folks specify
CITY and STATE when they post about a specific location. I am
American, so when I read "My Day Office is conveniently located at
Elliott & Broad across from the Spaghetti Factory and overlooks the
Olympic Sculpture Park," I admit that I didn't know that that was in
Seattle.

I also get a large number of emails every week sent to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] requesting that I add someone to the "event list".
(BarCamp is an alternative conference model for those of you
unfamiliar with the event.) Unfortunately, most people assume that I
know what even they're talking about, which invariably I don't.

So, given that, it'd be super useful if we were more explicit about
where *exactly* we were talking about. ;)

Thanks,

Chris in San Francisco

[Coworking] Re: Space available at Berkeley Coworking

2007-09-26 Thread Sean O'Steen

Chris M,

I know you asked Chris A. about the pricing and spaces, but I think
he's still playing catch-up after some travel and a conference
presentation. So, allow me to answer on behalf of our space.

We got Berkeley Coworking started about 2 months ago and are still
trying to get the word out to the local community about what we have
to offer. We have about 1100 square feet, half of which is common area
for meetings and drop-in guests. The rest is desk space for anchor
tenants. We offer desk space, electricity, and WiFi free to drop-in
guests any time one or more anchor tenants are in the house. We're
close to UC Berkeley, and the downtown, so if you're in the area and
need to get some stuff done, come on by! You can check on our open/
closed status on out website before you walk/ride/bart/drive on over.

We're currently looking to fill three anchor seats here at Berkeley
Coworking. For $400 per month + a $300 one-time infrastructure fee,
you will get your own desk, keys for 24X7 access, and priority
scheduling for the conference area downstairs. Right now the 5
existing anchor tenants come have various software development &
testing backgrounds, but we're open to most disciplines. Our only
caveat right now is that we encourage limited phone use inside the
space to keep the background noise to a minimum.

Cheers,
Sean

[Coworking] Open / Closed Status for your space

2007-09-26 Thread Sean O'Steen

This is a question for any of the coworking spaces who do not keep
regular hours and who want to attract drop-in community members. How
have you been letting your community know when you are open and when
you are closed?

Here at Berkeley Coworking, we went around the room, and came up with
lots of ideas, most of which involved writing code or hacking some
electronics, none of which we're opposed to mind you. However, we
quickly realized we were trying to build the equivalent of a space pen
that can write in zero gravity, when a simple pencil might do the
trick.

Currently we're posting our status on a twitter account and have that
display on our website www.berkeleycoworking,com. That way anyone
who's interested in coming by could conveivably follow us on twitter
and get some form of a ping from us whenever we're in the house. It's
simple, and it has worked so far. However, we really can't use that
to show our availability in the future... you know for those who
actually plan their day in advance ;-)

We've also investigated using a Google GrandCentral account to setup a
central phone number that will ring one or more of our anchors (the
ones with the keys to the joint). At this time though, GrandCentral
doesn't let you register your real phone numbers to more than one
account. As a result, I can't receive calls for a coworking
information line, since I use GrandCentral for other purposes.
GrandCentral says that this feature is on their development roadmap,
but didn't give a time estimate.

So, I thought I'd throw this out to the community for discussion. What
have you all tried and what seems to work?

Kindest Regards,

Sean O'Steen

[Coworking] Re: Open / Closed Status for your space

2007-09-26 Thread David Doolin

Sean,

Very good post. I am commenting from
my experience at Hat Factory.

"attracting drop-ins" is an answer, not
a question. What problem are you trying
solve by having more drop-ins?

>From my year experience with Hat Factory, what you are asking
for is not possible: you will need regular hours to encourage
drop-ins. Think about a coffee shop that had irregular hours.
Would you be inclined to drop by on a regular basis if you
were never sure it would be open? Or might close soon after
you arrived?

Failing regular hours, you need someone who is there
all the time, which is almost the same thing.

Yes, Hat Factory also has a twitter account.

This could help if every single person was absolutely
committed to keeping twitter up to date.

You are looking for technical solutions to a social problem.

Based on my experience, attracting drop-ins without
having standard hours is not effective. It's good money
(your productive time) chasing bad money (low revenue
from drop-ins). This is what was tried at Hat Factory,
and it was always a *huge* effort to attract and retain
good people to ground the community (recruiting was
our motivation).

A better idea is figuring out what your motivation for
drop-ins. Recruitment? Larger community? More
revenue? Boil it down to your real underlying motivation.
"Seems like a good idea" ultimately won't work. Even
if it *is* a good idea to accommodate drop-ins, knowing
*why* you want this capability will let you really nail it.

It's really a conundrum. The part I enjoy about
coworking is the flexibility. But actually running a
coworking space successfully apparently requires
giving up a lot of that flexibility. Which makes
sense in a certain kind of way.

[Coworking] Re: Open / Closed Status for your space

2007-09-26 Thread Sean O'Steen

David,

Thank you. Awesome comments and observations! And yes, I recognize my
tendencies to try technical solutions for what may be social
concerns... it's what I do.

Yes, attracting drop-ins is one of our answers for how to build
community AND how to recruit potential anchors. Which one is more
important depends on who you talk to. For me it's the community.
Trying to build a community is one of the main reasons I joined in.
Fiscally speaking, I'm a minority stakeholder in Berkeley Coworking.
I'm not on the hook for our P&L at this time. If you were to ask one
of the people who are, I suspect they might lean towards filling the
seats.

As I'm still fairly new to this newsgroup, I didn't want lead off with
a how to create community question, I thought I'd try for something
specific, hence the narrowly scoped open / closed thread. I agree that
drop-ins leads to a larger discussion about community and revenue, but
I honestly don't know how to scope it.

Thank you for your feedback!
Sean
