[Coworking] Coworking in Ann Arbor, Michigan

2009-05-28 Thread mitten

Hi all! Just a quick note to let you know that Workantile Exchange
will be opening in Ann Arbor next week. A lot of work has been poured
into the space by lots of people, most notably by founder Mike
Kessler, and we're very excited to see the doors finally opening.

Website here: http://workantileexchange.com

There are some construction pics on the site there now; will likely be
updated in the next day or two with more finished stuff. We've been
waiting on our tables - they don't arrive til tomorrow. Argh!
http://workantileexchange.com/gallery.html

WorkEx is a little different from some of the other coworking spaces
we've looked at, in that we don't rent desks. It's a general
membership structure and is focused on building a community of
independent workers of all flavors, not just techies. We have writers
and artists and filmmakers, as well as the requisite smattering of web
workers, and hope to keep diversity of fields in the general
membership. See http://workantileexchange.com/about.html for a more
polished explanation.

WorkEx also has rentable training space; there's a large room upstairs
and several smaller conference rooms. A pair of local coders have been
running a Ruby on Rails class in the large space and it's going very
well.

We haven't worked out all the details on day passes, but they will be
available, and we will be honoring the Coworking Visa, should you ever
be passing through town.

If you need more info on the space or how to join, there's more on the
website, as well as a link to apply for membership. Or you can just
ask me. :)

[Coworking] Re: Coworking in Ann Arbor, Michigan

2009-05-28 Thread Matthew Wettergreen
Congrats on the opening!

Noticed that you have a coffee kiosk. Multiple spaces have been talking
about putting in a coffeeshop, could you talk more about how you're
structuring this? Are they renting from you?

It's good to see your space including artists and filmmakers. Broadening the
concept of community allows you to collectively face the unique challenges
that confront all independent workers, not only those in the tech sector.

Try out CubesCrayons in Mountain View. NO KIDS necessary.
Airy office, lots of parking, near downtown MV with great restaurants.
Drop-in rates $20/half day and $35/day or by 10 day or monthly

Right now, we are looking for some coworking space in the Penninsula

[Coworking] New Hampshire Innovators (Coming Soon)

2009-05-28 Thread James Hall
Hi all,
A few of us around Manchester, NH are putting together a space. We are
setting ourselves up as both a co-working space and an organization. We
plan to do PR for our tenants and the New Hampshire high-tech community at
large.

I was wondering if any co-working facilities had good success networking
with political bodies and other organizations for sponsorship and support?
Who did you approach, and how did you approach them? We have a lot of
connections with different businesses, organizations and some politicians,
but have never asked them for money before. What approaches worked, didn't
work, and what was your compelling argument?

Our current thought is to do a launch party and get a lot of our potential
supporters and tenants in the same room at the same time to generate
excitement. Has that worked for anyone?

[Coworking] Re: Coworking Calgary

2009-05-28 Thread Tara Hunt
Grant (http://twitter.com/splorp) is just one of the many cool geeks in the
community in Calgary and, I believe, he was one of the people behind
BarCampCalgary...but I don't think he is involved in the coworking efforts.
He'd be a good person to talk to about getting interest drummed up in the
wider community, though.
Here is the Calgary page on the coworking wiki:

Doesn't look like there is anything in place, but there are definitely
interested parties.

I have a similar question, though mine is about billing for monthly
charges (a flat, recurring fee)

I'm looking for a low or no cost way to set-up recurring payments (not
just recurring invoices that I have to chase down for payment)
I also want the system to respect the concept of 30-day notice (from
what I understand, PayPal will do recurring billing, but the customer
can cancel at any time)

I'd much prefer to use my own credit card merchant account than PayPal
or Google. I'm just not into setting up or paying for a shopping cart
to enable this.
In a pinch I have emailed a credit card authorization form which they
then fax in, but it's not a good method.
I like the idea of a wufoo type form online, but I don't know if it's
advisable for capturing sensitive (credit card) information. There are
few enough clients/members that I wouldn't mind manually entering the
information from the form to complete the payment process, so the
integration piece is not important.

I always appreciate your ideas, thanks!

[Coworking] Re: Coworking in Ann Arbor, Michigan

2009-05-28 Thread mitten

The coffee kiosk is subletting the space. It doesn't fully subsidize
the rent on the whole space by any means, but it certainly helps. This
is their first physical location, but they've been roasting for some
time now. They'll have some outdoor seating, but mostly it's a 'to go'
coffee counter.

The members don't get free coffee, though - but they are doing a
special 'Workantile Blend' for us (and will likely have some kind of
discount or punch card or something like that in the future).

One other note on the financial end of things. Our membership fee is
only $100 a month, but because of the community-oriented structure (no
personal desks and so on), we can have a lot more members than we
could if the space was parceled out individually. We're not sure how
many will be the maximum, but we're starting out with a few dozen to
build the personality of the group and establish some community norms,
and then we'll add a few more people a month until it feels full.
