[Coworking] Thinking of s a site.
I am considering the Cowork concept, and have for the past couple of years, as a place where, as well as a replacement for 9-5ers, it can become an alternate site for wannbe designers and students to be able to buy in or do daily spot use. Still developing the idea, and I may have a space to do it in with a revenue share by the property owner for the first year. [Coworking] Update from Local 64 (Vermont)
Hey everybody, Happy waning days of summer - for many of you, I hope the electric bill hasn't been too high due to the heat going on. Here in Vermont, though we've had a few triple-digit pushing days, we've largely avoided the difficulties elsewhere. I wanted to share a few ideas: - First, how are coworking spaces connecting? With O2 up in Burlington we're looking to share access via a passport system, which is great. And I want to start connecting our coworkers' ideas with others. We're having a pitch kitchen in September (http://local64.com/events/pitchkitchen) and its looking like we'll try to connect with a portland incubator for feedback/connections/support. wonder whether others have tried this, or would like to try it out? - We're expanding in September - this is good, and scary. Have others expanded this quickly - am I being foolhardy or is it worth it to go with momentum as long as you're not losing money in the effort? - Key card access is becoming almost mandatory to manage access and expand a sense of ownership. What are the best systems out there if one needs to retrofit? That's it from 44°15′N 72°34′W. hope all's well in coworking land! lars --- Lars Hasselblad Torres local64.com | create + play + share @local64vt | 802-595-0605 -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Coworking group. Re: [Coworking] Update from Local 64 (Vermont)
Awesome! Congrats on the growth. - First, how are coworking spaces connecting? With O2 up in Burlington we're looking to share access via a passport system, which is great. And I want to start connecting our coworkers' ideas with others. We're having a pitch kitchen in September (http://local64.com/events/pitchkitchen) and its looking like we'll try to connect with a portland incubator for feedback/connections/support. wonder whether others have tried this, or would like to try it out? Coworking Seattle/Seattle Collaborative Space Alliance has a lot of good insight on this. You can search the forum for coworkingseattle for past conversations. http://coworkingseattle.org (http://coworkingseattle.org/Home.html) I think they'll tell you generally: keep it simple and casual, open and personal. THis tends to be stickier than biz to biz. - We're expanding in September - this is good, and scary. Have others expanded this quickly - am I being foolhardy or is it worth it to go with momentum as long as you're not losing money in the effort? How long ago did you open? I've seen expansions within a year more than a few times. If you can, work on a waiting list NOW. Don't wait until you open to sell memberships. Pre-sells are awesome for cash-flow buy in. Also: an expansion is a HUGE opportunity for community building, and making the existing community more resilient. Don't forget to include members as much as you can in the expansion. Anything from painting the walls to assembling furniture to picking out art - see how people might want to pitch in, and look for things they can do together. That's it from 44°15′N 72°34′W. hope all's well in coworking land! Thanks for the report. [Coworking] Re: A coworking space must-have
Thanks for the tip. I tried to get some for Mutinerie in Paris but unfortunatly they don't send it to France apparently... Re: [Coworking] Dark gossips circling around coworking
Communists, hippies, utopians or here (first time) freemasons... Very true that coworking spaces and more generally community driven initiatives are particularly exposed to theses kinds of stigmatizations. This is sad to see people trying to interpret theses new models with the broken glasses of the past, adding to this intellectual laziness all their prejudices and fantasies - to often determined by simplistic collective typifications. I am afraid they have to enlarge their conceptual universe; society is more and more granular and the great thing about coworking is that everyone is free to have its own personal opinions, as diverse as this could be, as long as their is mutual respect. Live and let live I guess - Ups :) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Coworking group. [Coworking] Description of coworking for a brief on innovation spaces
Hi All, I am writing a brief on innovation spaceshttp://facilitatingchange.org/2011/11/innovation-grounds/for the Beyond Access: Libraries Powering Development http://www.beyondaccess.net/initiative. This also builds on exploration into this topic at the Technology Social Change group, at the University of Washington Information School. So I wanted to share with you my draft description of coworking. It's below. I'm using an open-notebook approach to write the brief. You can see and comment on ithttps://docs.google.com/a/facilitatingchange.org/document/d/1nedkdrvD3zP8g5eiFSVdAWYJHKOkFxZ86jXTIA7r8as/edit#in all its messiness :) There are also descriptions of hackerspaces, fablabs, and telecentres. I'm really pleased about this because I was able to use the experiences of being a member and volunteer for Station C in Montreal and mix them with my international development work. Here's to more coworking spaces around the world -- and more embedded into development initiatives and public libraries! Cheers, Christine *Coworking* — A coworking is a space where independent professionals (“free agents”), entrepreneurs, and employees with locational flexibility can work, connect, and host meetings and events. Coworking can also be an informal event — a “jelly” — that temporarily gathers a group of workers in a public space, private home, or business. Typical coworking spaces have an open-concept interior layout, with tables, desks, meeting rooms, and eating/lounging areas. WiFi is always included and most provide basic office equipment. Workers can become members with a dedicated desk, or pay a drop-in rate and use whatever space is available. Coworking emerged in response to the emotional and professional needs of independent knowledge workers, in particular the need — the need for social interaction, ad-hoc feedback and support, and work/meeting spaces that are flexible, affordable, and project a professional image. Benefits include increased productivity, work quality, and opportunities. Coworking spaces are distinguished by their members’ commitment to a core set of values (collaboration, openness, and diversity, among others), an innovative and creative spirit, and activities that foster community, serendipity, and civic engagement. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Coworking group. Re: [Coworking] Re: Description of coworking for a brief on innovation spaces
This looks pretty good. One small nit pick: Workers can become members with a dedicated desk, or pay a drop-in rate and use whatever space is available. I would advise against conflating membership with dedicated desks. Membership takes on many forms, and drop-in usage tends to be a gateway to membership in addition to being a part of the flexible usage model. I think that theres also room for a mention of the larger connection/movement/community across coworking spaces - the very existence of this meta community - as a valuable component to Coworking spaces hacker spaces. -Alex -- /ah indyhall.org coworking in philadelphia On Thursday, August 9, 2012 at 7:55 PM, Christine Prefontaine wrote: Oh here's the talk that Chris Coward did on innovation spaces at TASCHA: http://tascha.uw.edu/2012/04/coward/ On Thursday, August 9, 2012 7:53:55 PM UTC-4, Christine Prefontaine wrote: Hi All, I am writing a brief on innovation spaces (http://facilitatingchange.org/2011/11/innovation-grounds/) for the Beyond Access: Libraries Powering Development (http://www.beyondaccess.net/) initiative.
