Re: [Coworking] Re: History of Coworking
Hi everyone, I read this the other day. http://www.deskmag.com/en/the-history-of-coworking-spaces-in-a-timeline Looks like deskmag did go ahead and make a timeline. On Tuesday, September 10, 2013 5:53:50 AM UTC+10, ruyoung wrote: Since we can't make a graphic timeline, and that might be unnecessary anyway, I put up a simple table at http://wiki.coworking.com/w/page/68852527/History%20of%20Coworking%20-%20a%20timeline It generously lifts text from Craig's blog post, Deskmag's Sep 2 article about the history of coworking, and some other places around the internet that I can't remember. It needs some work, including the launch of coworking books (Angel? Tony?), when the coworking blog launched and ceased, the dates of when some other collectives formed, when Deskmag started, etc,, but it's a fluid starting point. [Coworking] Update: Great panel discussion last night! :-)
HI all, Three cheers for TEW panel moderator, Keeva Kase, who discovered our discussion on the google coworking group and worked hard to track me down and invite me and the Katie from Mercury Studio and Vinci from the Perch. It was last minute, so Vinci couldn't make it, but Katie and I did and I got to sit on the panel. I think it was a good panel discussion. And it was very encouraging to see interaction among the different spaces in the area in a way that I have seen in other cities but has been sorely lacking in the triangle. I hope its a good omen. :-) Big thanks to Keeva Kase of Bull City Forward for making this happen! The panelists are all accelerators or incubators. None of the local coworking spaces are invited to participate. Here is something I apparently worry about more than other coworking space owners: last I heard there were almost 700 incubators in America. Incubators are now not so cool anymore, so lots of folks seem to be switching to an acclerator model. Its not clear that they will do any better than incubators that failed. Is anyone else worried that SEVEN HUNDRED incubators accelerators in america could suddenly decide that they need to become coworking spaces?! There are also about 700 coworking spaces in america. Imagine a world where every single coworking space was suddenly competing with an incubator/accelerator that was funded by the local city/chamber of commerce/university/VC community. These new entrants can cause lots of trouble, especially in small markets where they can outspend a small coworking space by a factor of 10, easily. Anyone else pondering these types of issues? Re: [Coworking] CoWorking Association?
Hi, Sabrina, My dad was an engineer in the ACoE, he assures me that both the rule and the result are accurate. Maybe we should start an association of folks with a foot on two continents. We can call it Intercontinental Coworkiing Colossi or something. Our motto: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!:-) For the logo alone it might be worth doing. Re: [Coworking] Incubators, Accelerators: threat to small coworking spaces?
On Thursday, August 29, 2013 9:38:52 AM UTC-4, ruyoung wrote: That said, many incubators and accelerators are VC funded, and if their model simply isn't working, then they are more likely to pay out the lease or negotiate an early end and close their doors rather than waste money to change models to a different industry. That's a business decision, not a community decision. I would have to agree with Rachel that the current rush of VC funding for accelerators is fueled by the dream of getting in on the ground floor of the next Google or Facebook, and they will soon realize that the ROI isn't there. Winning that game would require not hundreds of accelerators but thousands. What is being sold as an invetment will soon start to look like a charity project. Our big concern shouldn't be that they will take over, but that real coworking might pick up some of their failure stink when they go down. As such I'm thinking that coworking should not try to compete, but distance itself from accelerators and incubators and establish themselves as a more sustainable business model with an actual future. -- Visit this forum on the web at http://discuss.coworking.com --- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Coworking group. [Coworking] Re: New Technology From PayPal Could Facilitate AutoPayments for Coworkers
A surprising number of our members are anti-PayPal, so if you must have a PayPal account to do the check-in, then this would not work for us. We use the pfSense/Nexudus api for wifi check-in, although I'll bet the paypal system will be easier to setup. We do have a generic payment page ( http://www.ptcolab.com/payments) that allows people to setup monthly payments, and make one-time payments. So, for now, we have a system that works, but I do see how this new PayPal service could become a viable option after they've worked through some of the inevitable issues. ~ Frank *The CoLab http://ptcolab.com/ *Facebook http://facebook.ptcolab.com/ | Twitterhttp://www.twitter.com/PTColab -- Visit this forum on the web at http://discuss.coworking.com --- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Coworking group. [Coworking] Skill Product Sharing in Coworking Spaces: Device Lab (Columbus, Ohio)
This is what coworking is about: Sharing skills, but also sharing tools and products. One example we like to draw your attention to today is the Device Lab http://saltmines.us/devicelab/ in Columbus, Ohio. The idea: “Now, there are dozens of Internet enabled devices and a multitude of browsers that people may use to experience your application, design or web site. It’s impossible to own them all, so that’s why we built the Device Lab. … The goal is to have a centralized place where designers and developers can come to test their work out on a wide range of devices and platforms, *absolutely free* .” We love the idea, as we love free coworking and sharing for free. That is why we are restarting and enlarging the focus of the Skill Sharing Tool by also being able to list and request products to share. Here you can inputhttp://bit.ly/yBk4nf and here you find the output http://bit.ly/SkillSharingOutput. Please spread the word for this new tool and projects like the Device Lab in Columbus, Ohio.
