[Coworking] Re: New Member Intro - Heather Acton in northern Chicago 'burbs

2010-01-14 Thread jasontgoodr...@gmail.com
Congrats on your career move, Heather. Being you're own boss rocks.

You're also on the right track toward founding a coworking site by
gathering other enthusiastic souls and building committment. Good
office space is dirt cheap, esp. in the burbs, so that can come later.
If childcare is in the plan, Cubes and Crayons in California is a
great model. Felicity is the name of the founder. Otherwise, you'll
find lots of helpful people and info here that will help you get
there.

Good luck!

peg this as the year coworking goes mainstream. Nice of them to notice

Best to you and Cubes&Crayons. Hope to see a few in Chicago before

[Coworking] Re: PariSoMa and Zipcar

2009-12-22 Thread jasontgoodr...@gmail.com
Re: Car sharing and coworking

Hi, all. OfficePort in Chicago has a similar arrangement with i-Go Car
Sharing, a popular locally owned non-profit.

Car sharing and coworking (office sharing) are natural fits and a
great chance to cross-promote. We promote i-Go at events and feature
our arrangement—free biz membership ($75)—as a benefit of becoming an
OfficePort member; I-Go promotes OfficePort to their 14,000 members in
return. All i-Go members get half off a month's membership, up to
$275.

Since we share the same ethos as i-Go, we're planning more joint
marketing efforts in 2010. There are locally based car sharing
companies all over the U.S. where i-Go members have reciprocal
privileges.

Not dissing ZipCar. It was just a matter of what fit our membership
and vision better.

Hope this helps other space owners get more value for their crew.

Best,

[Coworking] Re: The Cube for Coworking

2009-10-24 Thread jasontgoodr...@gmail.com

Hi, r.!

I can't answer for Mike, but since The Cube just started, I guess it
can be whatever its members want it to be. Personally, I see it as a
good complement to the wiki and Google group as an outlet for casual
socializing and sharing.

I'd be more comfortable posting an event calendar or promos on The
Cube than here, FWW. Having a central place to check out space
happenings would be awesome, too. So thanks, Mike!

[Coworking] Re: Upcoming Breakout! Sessions: An Experiment in Mobile Work and Peer Production

2009-09-23 Thread jasontgoodr...@gmail.com

Tara,

Thanks for your vigilance of protocol as well as your intuition that
this would be of interest to the community. I floated a Breakout for
Chicago, but wasn't able to pull it together in time. Next year for
sure.

In the meantime (Twitter references ahead), me and #moworking founder
David Kadavy (@Kadavy) are going with a coworking flash mob model. The
next nice day here, we'll converge on Daley Plaza, where Da Mare is
promoting public wi-fi. We'll take him up on it and do a little ad-hoc
coworking. We're organize via Twitter with the above hash tag. (BTW,
I'm @chigoodrich.)

I think Breakout is important because it will lift coworking boats,
too. (There are obvious limits to working outdoors and in public
spaces.)

[Coworking] Re: Coworking Directory in PDF

2009-09-20 Thread jasontgoodr...@gmail.com

Hi, Jodi.

Did you check out the coworking map of the world? That shows a few
more spaces in the U.S. than are on your list. That said, even the map
isn't completely current.
http://bit.ly/KKhnX

Please be sure to add two of the world's largest coworking spaces,
OfficePortCHI and OfficePortKC. The Kansas City location is 20,000 sq.
ft., Chicago has nearly 15,000 sq. ft.

Good luck with the investors! (But don't wait for 'em, either!)

[Coworking] Re: Vancouver's Workspace closes

2009-08-22 Thread jasontgoodr...@gmail.com

Re: Open source real estate...

Jerome, can you tell us what percentage of Blankspaces members are
"techies"?
(Other space owners, please chime in as well.)

I find it's harder each year to delineate tech, media or green as the
concepts become more integrated into every enterprise. Obviously,
there are tech experts and/or consultants who do work for and
collaborate with others. But in a space full of developers, for
instance, there would be far fewer opportunities to network and
collaborate with others who need their services.

The issue I'm getting at is the necessity for diversity, like in any
thriving, sustainable community. (Or financial portfolio, for that
matter.) My view is that the only way for coworking to thrive and
gain mainstream awareness is for space owners to seek out the widest
variety of professions that could add value for their members. I
simply think the exclusive club concept has to become a little more
inclusive. That's not such a scary prospect once you look at the
immense opportunities. There is sustainability and growth in
diversity.

The Chicago Tribune ran a cover story on coworking this Sunday,

I think the trifecta of coworking options were covered well in the
article: Drop-in Jelly, stay-awhile Ravenswood, and we-mean-business
OfficePort.

Here's the headline and link to check it out:

Several editors and other word people with whom I've worked

[Coworking] Re: Coworking progress in Chicago

2009-08-11 Thread jasontgoodr...@gmail.com

Hi, Eric!

The address is 9 W Washington (Washington and State). The space is
coming together rapidly and we'll be operational by Aug. 24. Hoping to
have a preview party just before. To get an invite and space updates,
become an OfficePortCHI fan on FB. (But I won't leave you hangin',
either.)

I finally got to Ravenswood Coworking for an open house party last
week. Jeff Park and crew are a great group. He's an incredible host.
The Trib dropped by that day as well for a story I pitched on the
state of coworking in Chicago. OfficePort's opening will be the news
peg. Not sure if the Trib visited The Coop yet, but I'll make sure
they get in any listing of coworking spots. Sam and Linsey are super
cool. Went to Whuffaoke there last month!

Let's keep talking!

[Coworking] Re: Coworking progress in Chicago

Awesome, Wendy. The address is 9 W Washington, which is next to the
Hotel Burnham on the corner of State and Washington. To make sure
you're on the preview party invite list, become an OfficePortCHI fan
on Facebook.

Referrals would be fantastic as well. If you have some specific ideas,
just e-mail me.

Thanks!

[Coworking] Coworking progress in Chicago

2009-08-09 Thread jasontgoodr...@gmail.com

Hi, everyone.

Just wanted to update you on coworking developments in the Windy City.
The ball is starting to roll at long last.

OfficePort is opening a 15,000 sq.-ft. location downtown on State
Street. Things really took off for them in Kansas City, and they saw
an
opportunity—and a depressed real estate market—ripe for expansion
here. Right now, they're signing up monthly members, but co-founder
Shaul Jolles says he wants to stay flexible on how people want to use
the space.

Does anyone know if this is the first multi-city coworking enterprise
in
the US? I know The HUB is quickly establishing locations, but maybe no
more than one is currently open?

In full disclosure, I'm handling media relations for OfficePort CHI.
(The
first article on it will be in the Chicago Tribune probably next
week.) I'm also a coworking evangelist, raising awareness wherever I
go.

Please tell any coworking supporters you know in Chicago to check out
OfficePort CHI at officeportchi.com or become a Facebook fan to get an
invite to the preview party.

Thanks for your responses!

[Coworking] Re: Coworking business planning

2009-08-05 Thread jasontgoodr...@gmail.com

Hi! I'm in the same dilemma—looking for cashflow templates. Here's a
good example of a biz plan with cashflow forecasts. It's in Australian
dollars, however.

http://www.urbanworkspaces.com/wp/business-model/

You could contact the owner to see if he would make the template
available to everyone in an .xls format or similar.

Good luck!

[Coworking] Social media portal (Formerly Catalysts in Chicago)

2009-05-19 Thread jasontgoodr...@gmail.com

Hi, Mark.

Sorry so long in replying. Maybe you and the group can help me with
this.

My idea for the portal is to jack people right in to connecting with
those around them and give them all the tools they need to be
productive. I don't want to reinvent any wheels here. I just want to
rearrange them to fit my purpose!

The Ning group option is certainly easier for me--and free! I've been
playing with a Ning mock up for a coworking group already. What I
haven't been able to do, however, is make it as "one-stop" as I'd like
for the features I'm hoping to incorporate. So, here are three main
features for which I haven't found the right plug-and-play solution:

1. Seamless connection to the portal/home page that would include a
"Who's here?" roster front and center. Your avatar with micro profile
is added after an opt-in prompt. Just click someone's icon or name a
la Twitter and it opens a new window of their chosen link.

2. Integrated instant messaging.

3. One-click advertising. Want to promote your company, product or
event to this crowd? Just click, pay and upload your ad--you're next in
line. (With admin approval, of course.)

Other typical navigation, info and service components would surround
the above features.

I hope you and anyone else in the group can help guide me here. If I
can find something suitable off the shelf, I won't have to spend
precious seed money. If not, perhaps someone can give me an estimate
on the degree of difficulty of what I'm trying to do. I don't think
it's too complicated, but I'm not a developer.

Many thanks!
Jason

[Coworking] Re: Catalysts in Chicago

2009-05-08 Thread jasontgoodr...@gmail.com

Thanks, Eric.

I've already contacted Linsey Burritt at The COOP. I'm going there
next week to work and chat. Ravenswood is next on the list, but I
haven't talked to anyone there yet. We'll be visiting other coworking
locations in the next month to put finishing touches on our business
plan.

I think there's huge potential for the movement here if we can raise
awareness of coworking locally and nationally. *Personally, I believe
this is something the people in this forum can do very effectively
together.* I'll post some starter ideas this weekend that I hope you
and everyone will add to.

As for potential locations, we're focusing on the North Side in
Lakeview/Lincoln Park. We've also looked in the West Loop and River
North. Frankly I think every neighborhood should have multiple spots,
but we're well aware of giving existing sites breathing space,
especially early on.

I love that cities like Orlando and Columbus are helping lead the
coworking charge. When you get a chance, I'd like to hear more about
the scene there and what you'd like to see happen here. We're
approaching this as open source workspace. We have ideas and drive to
get it done, yet the best solution will come with enthusiastic input.

Talk to you again soon.

-Jason

[Coworking] Catalysts in Chicago

2009-05-06 Thread jasontgoodr...@gmail.com

Hi, everyone!

My wife and I are building a coworking community in Chicago with the
goal of opening a space by the end of the summer. (Name tbd) Your
posts have been a great introduction to the culture and workings of
the movement. We hope to contribute substantially as the venture
progresses.

I'm a career journalist (editing and design) who became interested in
coworking after I was laid off from the Chicago Tribune. While
establishing my freelance business, I sorely needed affordable
workspace outside my home in order to be productive. We all know the
inadequate options. I was one of those who thought I had come up with
a profound, new idea of collaborative, shared workspace—until I
discovered the right search terms! For now, I Jelly with Sean Johnson,
Brad Maier and crew at a spacious North Side coffee shop. Very cool,
inviting people.

I'm also developing a social media portal to ease introductions and
grease the collaborative process at coworking sites and cafes, etc.

Gretchen, my wife, probably saw the potential of coworking before I
did. ("Jason, you need to get out of the house.") She's my tag team
partner in this enterprise. She's also a bookkeeper and mom who has
been an actress, singer, IT manager... She will introduce herself to
the group more aptly than I can in the near future. She always has
great questions and thoughts.

Enough for now. I'm so glad this community exists. I'll try to give
even more than I get.

Thanks!
Jason Goodrich
