[Coworking] Re: Web platform for Cowork Space

2014-01-11 Thread julianne
Hey there Paul,

there are lots out there.

If it is just for meeting rooms - then Google Calendar might be the best
option (or another shared calendar service)
FB also has private group options.

Here are more tools - and TONS of info in the magical world of the
coworking wiki

I don't need to charge people over the platform, just have some sort of
private social network and a way to reserve the meeting rooms for certain
 hours.

If not, I guess I should start making one haha.

I'd like to know tho, are co-working spaces practice reciprocal use with

don't foresee too many hours used but is always nice to know that if and

[Coworking] Global Coworking Census published today!

2013-02-27 Thread julianne
Hey there all - we are super excited to have completed the Census.

Global report here: http://blog.deskwanted.com/?p=1156
Census download here:
https://www.deskwanted.com/coworking/Global-Coworking-Census-2013.pdf

I also have specialized details for US, UK, and Germany, get in touch if
you are looking for anything!

Quick facts:

2,498 shared workspaces worldwide – more than a 300% increase since 2010
when there were just 600 coworking spaces - and this number looks set to
grow as more people discover the benefits of working alongside others. The
United States leads with the most shared workspaces (781), followed by
Germany (230), United Kingdom (166) and Australia (62).

US leads - 781 - 45% growth in 12 months
London leads as city - 81 spaces

From the Deskwanted perspective, I can tell you that December is the worst

Granted, my questions is more for co-working spaces that are not located
in big cities (if any like that exist). Ours is located in the suburbs and
I have noticed a decrease in activity since last week and around
Thanksgiving. We have not done anything different and we do have new promos
starting in January but we don't have a marketing budget for December so I
can't spend a ton of money marketing right now. I mostly just want to know
if it's normal in the co-working world as I know its normal to slow down
around the holidays in the B2B world.

[Coworking] Re: Has anyone tried promoting Coworking spaces through traditional office space listings?

2012-12-13 Thread julianne
Hey there Oren,

In general we have been adding our new listings to Craigslist - after about
8 months of this work, we have seen that there is not much traffic through
Craigslist that comes back.

I would be curious to hear where on sites like Loopnet you had thought
about posting your space - as we have noticed that at this time there is no
real place to add coworking spaces.

We are searching out more and more places to promote spaces and also to
improve public knowledge about them. Often we still find the case that the
number of freelancers in the world is rising at a dramatic pace - and most
of them still work from home - mostly because they do not realize the
option is even there.

Would be great to hear your thoughts on how we might work on helping to
spread the word in a more diverse range of areas.

All the best,

Julianne

allows us to give back a bit!

Any person who books a monthly desk that suits their style and budget will
get a 10€ gift from Deskwanted.

Any coworking space that accepts a booking through us will also get a 10€
gift.

If you would like to help us spread the word about the offer to your own
communities let me know - we have some great pictures to share - one of
which you can see here on the DW blog

Re: [Coworking] A VC backed work space isn't something I fear.

2012-10-25 Thread julianne
Hey there Susan,

I found two articles pertaining to the info you were looking for:

http://www.deskmag.com/en/the-development-of-coworking-spaces-213
Data from the Global Coworking Survey shows that solo coworking spaces are
twice as likely to be unprofitable as those with many “competitors” on
average. (the article continues with more info)

http://www.deskmag.com/en/survey-patterns-of-coworking-space-closure-560
We also notice that coworking spaces in small towns have a higher failure
rate than those in big cities. We can attribute this to the higher gap of
knowledge about coworking in these areas and fewer overall possibilities to
attract coworkers. Coworking spaces in these areas tend to be smaller and
members visit the space less frequently, making it more difficult to
establish a profitable business - compared to those in big cities. (other
interesting facts, not directly related to your query)

Hope this helps!

Cheers,

Julianne

Craig, this is an awesome post. Thanks for sharing your experience! It's
amazing how often individuals outside the coworking world default to
traditional competition or fear-based responses when it comes to other

anything but awesome for us here in Seattle. It is particularly powerful to
be able to respond to questions with actually i think it's awesome that
another space has opened and I can't wait to go and visit!

Deskmag had some great data to back up the claim as well in their last
coworking survey - something about coworking spaces doing financially
better when there were more spaces in the same city. Obviously this is a
stronger trend for bigger cities, but it's a powerful statistic
nonetheless. I can dig up the image if you'd like - I know it's somewhere
in the recesses of my gmail.

Collaboration. It's no wonder it's one of our core values! ;)

Building awareness together. The more coworking spaces that open in a

coworking. We will all carry the burden of making coworking a mainstream

Different cultures. Creative Density does not focus on developers,

It is great for people that fit into their vision, but not for the remote

Local community and location. Creative Density is about 1.5 miles away

downtown core. We are surrounded by a fantastic neighborhood with great
lunch spots, grocery stores, and cafes just around the corner in a mixed

community). Galvanzie is on the other side of town and in a nice but
different neighborhood. By following the general 20 min travel rule,
together the coworking spaces are meeting the needs of more people that
want to join a coworking community.

Several cities have already had a large VC backed collaborative spaces
open up with Chicago being one of the most recent ones I can think of.
Current coworking spaces should not fear but embrace the new members to
their local coworking community and it should just be a reminder to focus

[Coworking] Re: Any good member profiles apps for coworking space websites??

2012-07-06 Thread julianne

Hey there Will,

Just saw your post.
I am not sure if you know about Deskwanted.com but we have upgraded to be
much more than a search portal for coworking spaces - we have recently
launched our management system for coworking spaces, including member
profiles, and easy messaging to them.
We would be very happy to have you try us out. We will always be free for
managing spaces, and in the near future we will be launching our premium
services - including white labeling and reports.
At the moment the system can help with payments, desk bookings, meeting
room space bookings, managing coworkers, and more.
We are nearing 1,000 spaces on Deskwanted and have been working closely
with the community to develop the system that will fit for everyone, and
will work to help spaces tailor to their needs.

I have cc'd Joel here, he is the founder and can walk through any technical
questions that you may have about the system.

You can also send any questions directly to me, I would be happy to find
the answers.

All the best,

Julianne

 Hi All,

Can anyone recommend an app for creating a nice looking Members Profiles
page for their coworking website? Here are some things I'm looking for
(with importance from 1 to 2, where 1 is essential and 2 is ideal but not
 essential):

- 2. Easy for the member to set-up quickly by importing the initial
data from Facebook or Google+ or Yahoo (or something) profiles.
- 1. Customizable fields by the coworking space owner: I'd like to be
able to add a few custom fields that wouldn't be in a standard Facebook
profile, but also to not include all the fields from other prominent
 social
networking sites, so the fields are most appropriate for my community.
- 1. Customizable field content by the coworking space members:
Members should be able to login and then manage their own profile,
 changing
the data from whatever was originally imported from Facebook or Google+ or
wherever.
- 2. Searchable by field (or maybe sortable). It would be nice if
someone interested in finding programmers in the space could filter by
 that
profession, or even by a specialization like AJAX. (Or by translator with
 a
specialization like Russian, for example).
- 1. Looks nice. I would be nice if the members profiles page overall
formatting was designed to look professional as you might get on a search
for members on meetup.com or some other quality social network site.
- 1. Not connected to an entire social network site. I know there is
software out there that works if you use their entire backend (like Ning
 or
Grouply, etc.), but too many of those features don't work for my site.
- 1. Embeddable into a Google Site: I want it to be on my main website
as a page, and I use Google Sites.
- 1. Usable by a non-programmer. It should be a widget or gadget or
app or whatever that has been designed for non-programmers to use.
- 1. Don't need a server to run the software.

I'm guessing this is an impossible wishlist, but it also seems like
something a lot of community organizers would want for their websites,
along with most coworking space owners, so I thought I'd ask. I remember a
long time back Alex at Indy Hall mentioned some great software, but it was
still at a stage where you needed some programming savvy (and I think your
own server) to manage. Anyway, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

 Thanks!

 Will

[Coworking] Re: Nonprofit status

2012-02-16 Thread julianne
Hey there Nancy,

I am definitely not the expert on non-profit v. for profit status in
the States.

I know a few people who are starting businesses in the EU which have
an ultimate goal of making social change - the term that they use is
called 'Social Enterprise'. 'A social enterprise is an organization
that applies business strategies to achieving philanthropic goals.'-
according to Wikipedia -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_enterprise

If this is the direction you are heading for it may be something to
include in your business plan description.

Just a thought.

Good luck with your decision and your space!

Hey everyone

Wow it keeps coming up in the group! I am reposting a message I sent

touch if you have any questions!

Deskwanted is about to relaunch, with new tools for coworking spaces.
You will be able to manage all your members, process payments, create
invoices, encourage interaction, and keep track of finances, all in
one place.

If you are still missing features, we also offer API access so you can

[Coworking] 3-2-1... the Coworking Space Ship has lift-off!

2012-02-15 Thread julianne
Hello everyone,

We have lift-off! The Coworking Space Ship is coming to the U.S. and
Canada. For full details check out Coworkingtour.com

The Coworking Space Ship is a mini-conference about coworking that
will visit 10 cities this March. This traveling roadshow is brought to
you by the team from Deskmag and Deskwanted, who - like you - are on a
quest to explore coworking. We will begin this adventure in March in
North America, where we will visit 10 cities, beginning with Austin
and the Global Coworking Unconference, a.k.a GCUC!

So if you are in Austin, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, New York,
Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto, or Vancouver then come on
down! We have schedule meet-ups in each city, hosted in local
coworking spaces. The programmes for each will differ and have a very
local focus, so check each city page for specific details. Please
register if you would like to attend so we are prepared for the
correct numbers.

If you can't make it in person, you can still fly with us by following
our blog, twitter #cowospaceship, and facebook posts detailing the
spaces and communities we encounter along the way.

If you have any questions, suggestions, or comments, send them to me
Julianne(at)deskwanted.com, I would be happy to hear from you.

We are really looking forward to getting to know you all more either
in person or online!

All the best,

54% are freelancers - which leaves the rest to others
27% are employees of companies

Check it out, or email me if you have any questions about he survey -

IBM, although most of them work for smaller companies. In almost all cases,
the employer reimburses the employee for the cost of membership.

We also have a couple of engineers who live in Ann Arbor and work for an
automotive supplier north of Detroit. Rather than commuting 45 minutes each
way (on a good day), they work here and go into the office once a week or
so. Their employer also pays for their memberships.

There are a surprising number of people who live in Ann Arbor but work for
auto manufacturers or suppliers in the Detroit area, which is a pretty
significant commute. Due to the culture of these companies, getting them to
understand the benefits of coworking for their employees is tough.

 Hello all...

The following is serendipity-in spades. Here's hoping you are almost as
amused as I was. Now this:

I wanted to know the history of a word I intended on using in an
upcoming article that I was writing. I just wasn't coming up with any
answers online. Then? Suddenly, I noticed on the Merriam-Webster site
that you can actually contact them for help on a word. I thought, hey,
 whatta concept!

I did so, and found I was getting my help (...and) swapping
email-strings with, in fact, a Senior Editor at Merriam-Webster. She
could not have been nicer and wanted to know all about coworking. One
thing led to another and I shared the plight-of-the-hyphen and so
forth. She said she would (indeed) inform the Editor In Charge of New
Words there at M-W. I have also, since, sent her the Original AP text
drafted by Joel Dullroy and Julia Holzberger on the topic to fortify the
 cause.

Hey, I make nooo promises. But thought I would at least share my
holiday-tale with you. Merriam-Webster is in Springfield, MA, only about
2 hours from where I am. Could've been in Omaha for all I knew? And The
Senior Editor? Well... turns-out she, at one time, went to High-School
just blocks from where our new Coworking Space is located, here in
Lawrence, MA. What ARE the odds?

Anyway. Thanks for letting me share. Enjoy.  ...and Happy New Year!
***Below is an excerpt from (her) email(s).***

 Hi Dave,

...And thanks very much for also sharing the link from your earlier
article: Is Coworking the New Incubator?
 http://www.deskmag.com/en/has-coworking-replaced-the-incubator-175

I really enjoyed reading it and will pass it along. I'll also talk to
our Editor in charge of new words here at M-W. Coworking definitely
needs to be entered in our file of potential new entries.

Wow. What an interesting trend Coworking is. Seems like it's on a
continuum with what's been happening with so many other areas now...

...Makes you wonder whether the traditional business office is on its
way to obsolescence, like the printed book!  'Tis a brave new world.

Best of luck with your new venture!  I'm sure the Chamber of Commerce in
Lawrence is probably very glad to have you there!

 Best,

 Joanne

[Coworking] Re: GigaOM’s Net:Work 2011 on December 8, 2011

2011-11-29 Thread julianne
Great that coworking is on the plate for the conference!

I don't think Deskwanted/Deskmag will be able to make it out this
time, but we would love to be able to share the results of the
discussion through Deskmag. Will there be a livestream or summary
notes of the discussion?

And maybe I am being a bit pedantic, but would it be possible to
change the name to 'Coworking 2.0', we are working to have the hyphen
removed when discussing the topic of coworking, so as not be clearly
differentiated from the classic definition referring to co-working
which suggests obligatory collaboration between employees working for
a single organization.

Looking very forward to the outcomes of the conference!

All the best,

Julianne

[Coworking] Someone deleted ALL files from Coworking EU Bar Camp folder

2011-11-29 Thread julianne
Hello everyone,

During the Coworking Europe conference we set up a public folder for
the Bar Camp notes and summaries.
They were there yesterday and were not there this morning.
The last person to have 'edited' the folder was Rashid Baset.

If you know this person please send the contact details right away, as
the only way we can see to retrieved the deleted docs is if Rashid
still has them in the 'trash' and has not emptied it.

We hope this was a mistake and that we will retrieve all of the files.
If no one knows Rashid (no one related to organizing the conference
does - and Rashid was not in the attendee list), then we may assume
that this was somehow done intentionally. If so, then this is a lesson
learned, and we will have to devise new ways for large scale open
collaboration so it does not happen again.

The good news is, we have already taken most of the information out of
these files in summary form, so all is not 100% lost.

If you know how to retrieve through Google docs in another way please
contact me.

Thank you for any help in this matter.

  Dear Azon,

I cannot stereotype the typical Chineseness or typical Asian behavior
here with a few sentences, but I DO want to support you with all my
optimism and strong belief in this: Sharing is a basic human thing.

Comparing to the western folks, we Asian are probably more reserved with
feelings and emotions and opinions with the strangers, but once we build
trust with one another, we DO share a great deal! (Think about the infamous
  Guanxi deals, haha)

However, just be careful about asking too much from your coworkers before
you get them REALLY involved in small community building things step by
step: give each other some time, dine out, have a beer and laugh together.
They do need to feel a sense of belonging with the community before they
  open their heart.

Moreover, be sure to give/share a lot yourself first as the host, make
everybody own you something, people will find a way to give back to you.
This is just the first step. Don't let everyone overkill YOU with their
generosity, they need to be generous to one another.

Community building is a slow-process, you cannot expect someone to step
into your coworking space and start to open up immediately. But always
believe and have faith in your coworkers, they will surprise you.

Again, this is not a Chinese or Asian thing.

Let's continue the conversation, I am making a trip to Thailand this
December, hope I could have chance to visit you soon...

  Good luck!

Dear AP Stylebook Editors,

Your style suggestions have a major influence on the spelling of new
words in the media and across society. Unfortunately, they have also
influenced the misspelling of a term that is close to our hearts:
coworking. Due to the rules set out in the AP Stylebook, the term
“coworking” is written as “co-working” in most media articles.

We would like to respectfully approach you with a request to eliminate
the hyphen from the word coworking when it refers to the specific
industry, and to include it as a stand-alone entry in forthcoming
editions of your reference book.

Background

Coworking here refers to a new and fast-developing industry related to
the use of shared workspace. “Coworking spaces” are workspaces or
shared offices that are used by various independent individuals as
their principle place of business. “Coworkers” are the individual
freelancers, self-employed contractors and entrepreneurs who visit
coworking spaces to undertake their work. “Coworking” is the act of
conducting one’s independent work in a location that allows
interaction and collaboration with other individual workers.

These terms differ from the existing idea of “co-working”, which
suggests obligatory collaboration between employees working for a
single organization.

The term coworking was first used in this context in a 2005 blog post
by Brad Neuberg, the founder of one of the first coworking spaces in
San Francisco. There are now over 1000 coworking spaces worldwide,
with approximately one opening each day somewhere in the world.

Why coworking should be written without a hyphen:

1. Coworking is the proper name for an industry sector. It was
adopted by one of the founders of this industry, and has entered into
common use within this industry as such. The use of a hyphen within
this word was not intended by the early initiators of the movement. As
representatives of companies which now function within the coworking
industry, we would request that the media refer to our businesses
using our preferred spelling of the term under which we operate.

2. Almost all coworking spaces and businesses which service this
industry use the spelling “coworking”, written without a hyphen. We
can offer empirical evidence of this.

3. The incorrect spelling leads to an incorrect definition of the
term, and thereby a misunderstanding of our industry. We see
“coworking” – the interaction of independent self-employed workers in
shared locations - as fundamentally different from the traditional
working situation of employees within a company. The relationship
between voluntary “coworkers” should be distinct from the involuntary
relationship of “co-workers” within a conventional company.

Coworking in common use

The word “coworking” – without a hyphen – is already in common use.
Although the majority of media articles use the hyphenated version, we
hereby present a selection of articles that have opted to use the
industry-preferred version.

New York Times  - February 21, 2008

minded independents -- has spread to dozens of cities.

But coworking is a different animal, one that draws inspiration from
open source software precepts and the lessons of the dot-com boom and
bust.

Mother Jones - January 18, 2008
He got a few friends together to share a rental space, as well as
printers, fax machines, and wireless Internet, and—like a good start-
up founder—branded his creation coworking.

Wikipedia - As of October 6, 2011
Coworking is a style of work which involves a shared working
environment, sometimes an office, yet independent activity.

Use within the industry

There are over 1000 coworking spaces in operation today. The vast
majority of them use the unhyphenated version of the term. The
coworking search portal Deskwanted.com provides a directory of many
such locations:

The problem: people sometimes want to have their privacy to make

The solution: should be easy to produce, pricing max. 250 Euros

If there are some people interested in doing this we could have a
