We had a bit of similar little spark at the open source design devroom at
FOSDEM and discussed how it would be very nice to have something continue
in this space.

I need to see if I am subscribed to relevant lists, but it would be very
nice to connect again with the community, and see if we can organize
something.

That reminds me, I think we are getting to put together a libre graphics
track at the SCALE conference in the Los Angeles area for the March 9–12
weekend.

Anyone in the Southern California vicinity (or near enough the the NA West
Coast to make the trip), please consider submitting a session proposal:
https://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale/20x/cfp

We've done a track at this event several times before; in general running
LG tracks and sessions at regional events is a great way to engage with
attendees who are users (even pro users) that can't always justify the
global travel bill.

Plus, it potentially could be a stepping stone to getting things organized
for a grand return to full LGM later in the year. Whoever is there in the
SCALE area, meeting up and talking planning steps would be great.

(Same goes, on the "meet at brainstorm" front, for the Open Source Design
crowd at FOSDEM, I suppose)

It's all about the snowball effect sometimes,

personally, i would be in favor of piggybacking another (related)
conference: we are bit "sleepy" and having a frame might help gathering
some forces and get it done!

most of all if it's in europe (from my point of vue!)

but there is one thing we must be careful with: the relationship with
(some) big companies.
i had a quick look at the atypi.org website and i could not spot any
big red flag (well, except the white A on red background you're using
as a logo... which should probably count as a red flag : - )

your employer is not be very popular in parts of the libre
graphics community and i think that any relationship with google
(and other tech giants or otherwise controversial companies/groups) must
be transparent and we need to agree in advance to the conditions of
such an involvement.

these posts are going to the create mailing list...
maybe, at some time, the discussion should continue in the lgm list,
since some of the people interesting in the lgm might not be here
(anymore).

voilà, it was nice to hear from you three again and i wish all a
wonderful weekend!

I was thinking of organizing a small libre fonts gathering in Europe or
USA. The ATypI.org conference is in Paris in May, so I was thinking about
something in London (or Reading city) before/after that event; could also
do it in Berlin since my manager at Google is living there again atm ;) But
a lot of fonts are around New England, and I'm keen to get the parametric
axes ideas out of Font Bureau and into the wider community. If this goes
ahead outside of USA, perhaps we could figure out a way to host a larger
event for all LGM sub-communities.

[CREATE] LGM in Rennes postponed to 2021, online event this year

2020-04-06 Thread Timothée Giet
Hi,

As discussed on the LGM mailing list, we decided to postpone the Libre

For this year, we are evaluating the possibility to make an online event
as some people expressed their interest.

Please take a minute to answer this survey:

Of course, for those who didn't submit a proposal, no need to answer the
first question of the form.

All the best,

Hi Nate,

I think the easiest way is to just resubmit your proposal, and we will
figure if it's a duplicate to use only the latest version. We already

So you already confirmed these dates on another email, but this was
quite a limited view span (the mailing list). If not mistaken, no
public announcement for LGM 17 has been made yet, with details on the
dates, location and others, and no call for talk either. And
apparently still no LGM 2017 website to refer people to.

With the rest of the GIMP team, we are starting to get a little
worried and we are not sure if we should start searching for an
accomodation yet. Could you reassure us?
Should we start planning our annual presence to LGM? When will the
public announcement and the call for talks happen?
Thanks!

whill happen very close to these dates. I'm giving priority to LGM,

Hi João,

I'm looking forward to seeing you in Rio.

Valentina would like to have a 3-hour
patternmaking workshop prior to LGM.
The Artediez school in Madrid uses Valentina to teach
patternmaking, and they have created a user manual.
It would be fantastic to have a Portuguese translation of this manual for
LGM.

If you know of anyone who could assist with translation of this manual from
Spanish to Portuguese (or English)
please have them send email to cont...@valentina-project.org

[CREATE] LGM 2016: Call for Participation

2015-12-03 Thread Femke Snelting

*Libre Graphics Meeting 2016: Other Dimensions*

http://libregraphicsmeeting.org

The eleventh annual international Libre Graphics Meeting 2016 will take place
Friday 15th until Monday 18th April 2016 in London, UK. This yearly event is an
occasion for teams and individual contributors/artists involved in Libre
Graphics to work together, to share experiences and to hear about new ideas. By
Libre Graphics we mean Free, Libre and Open Source tools for design,
illustration, photography, typography, art, graphics, page layout, publishing,
3D modelling, digital making and manufacture, cartography, animation, video,
interactive media, generative graphics and visual live-coding. The Libre
Graphics Meeting is not just about software, but extends to standards, file
formats and actual use of these in creative work. LGM has become the place in
which they can discuss their projects, coordinate their efforts and, crucially,
to meet in person. Participants in the LGM include developers, designers,
academics and activists from around the world, who are all passionate about
Free/
L

ibre graphics software and technology.

*State of the Libre Graphics Union*

We begin each meeting with a joint session that brings together all things
that have happened in our wide landscape over the last year. So, instead of
slots in the schedule for general updates on each Libre Graphics software
project, we invite every team present at LGM to submit two slides (maximum),
with a short explanatory text that showcases the leaps forward that has been
made over the past year. For first-time presenters and particular big or new
topics/features in established projects, we encourage additional stand-alone
submissions.

*Special focus: Other Dimensions*

In Toronto we celebrated the first decade of LGM, reflecting on the past and
considering the future. For the 2016 edition of LGM we continue speculating and
will expand Libre Graphics into Other Dimensions. We are looking for
presentations and workshops that explore the dimensions of space and material:
3D modelling and animation, Libre architecture, Open Source product design and
other fields of digital making and manufacture. We are also seeking
contributions that offer reflections on the 'other dimensions' of open source
communities and that engage with FLOSS tools in various contexts including but
not limited to teaching, learning, practice and co-production. This represents
a desire to address the future sustainability of the Libre Graphics movement,
through a growth of the core projects and topics that will, we hope, allow us
to welcome more and more FLOSS projects and participants to our community.

We are looking for:

* In-depth presentations of Libre Graphics code-contributions
* Showcases of excellent work made using Libre Graphics tools
* New and experimental projects in this area to meet the wider community,
including those in the field of 3D design and making
* Reflections on the activities of existing open source communities in either
the production of Free, Libre and Open Source tools or their use

Available formats (times include Q&A):

* Entry for State of the Libre Graphics Union (1-2 slides)
* Presentations (20 minutes)
* Workshops (1 or 2 hours)*
* Birds Of a Feather (BOF), discussion meetings or Hackathons (2 hrs or more)
* Lightning talk (7 minutes, selected at the event unconference style)

*Practical Details*

Submission deadline: 10 January 2016, content selection notification by end of
January 2016.

Re: [CREATE] LGM 2017 - Location confirmed: Brazil

2015-11-21 Thread Christoph Schäfer

That's great news, given the huge number of contributors from South America.

However, I wonder whether Brazil will be able to manage this. I mean, organising the world's biggest sporting event last year and doing the same for the second-biggest event next year is one thing, but hosting LGM? How will the country cope with the mass influx of Libre Graphics users, contributors, and coders, including, in some cases, their spouses and children? Will the stadiums for birds-of-a-feather sessions be ready by 2017, and will they provide electricity and WiFi? How many poor natives will have to be relocated to build luxury apartments and hotels for the rich LGM crowd?

Most importantly: Will the outcome of the LGM-final (or semi-final) have serious implications on the next Brazilian presidential elections?

;)

Hi all,

It’s a pleasure to announce today that a consensus has been reached among participants in the LGM organization towards Brazil for the LGM location in 2017.

LGM 2017 will take place during 4 days in the period between 15-Apr-2017 and 31-May-2017.

The conference will be hosted either in a University on Niteroi city Municipality or in the city of Rio de Janeiro. We are now entering in conversations to secure a nice place. Connections with local developer and designer (users) community will be prioritized.

*Dates* and *venue* will be announced within the next few weeks.

Looking forward for a super LGM #12 in 2017!

Cheers!

2015-11-21 Thread Joao S. O. Bueno
So, on behalf of the team for LGM 2017 in Brazil,
I thank the LGM organization for the choice.

The works had started - and we expect to have more news real soon.

As for other people from L.A. who had not been to other LGM's, lets
get this working -
we will also attempt to coordinate super libre-graphics tracks on both
FISL and Latinoware in 2016
as a warming up to LGM 2017.

Hi all,

It’s a pleasure to announce today that a consensus has been reached among
participants in the LGM organization towards Brazil for the LGM location in
2017.

LGM 2017 will take place during 4 days in the period between 15-Apr-2017
and 31-May-2017.

The conference will be hosted either in a University on Niteroi city
Municipality or in the city of Rio de Janeiro. We are now entering in
conversations to secure a nice place. Connections with local developer and
designer (users) community will be prioritized.

*Dates* and *venue* will be announced within the next few weeks.

Looking forward for a super LGM #12 in 2017!

[CREATE] LGM 2015 Reimbursement Form online

2015-05-10 Thread Louis Desjardins
Hi LGMers!

The LGM 2015 Reimbursement Form is online as of now.

If you have any issue filling this form, please let us know asap.

All the infos about how to use and fill this form is written on the form
itself so I won’t duplicate the infos here but feel free to write me
directly if anything.

One thing is we had to redo the form from scratch with the plugin change on
our website so if there is anything in the behavior of the form that is
mind boggling, tell us!

On a personal basis, I am very sorry to have physically missed the 10th
edition but I was wholeheartedly with you and I wish we can meet again in
London next year!

Cheers!

2014-05-06 Thread peter

Dear all,

We are happy to announce that:

Between April 30 and May 2 2015, Libre Graphics Meeting will take place
in Toronto (CA)

In 2016 LGM will be hosted in London (UK)

Through a shared online selection procedure the pro's and cons of the
proposals of Phnom Penh, Montreal, London and Toronto were discussed.

All candidates made very strong proposals.

Hereby a very big thank you to all who have worked hard on the beautiful
bids. We hope that the candidates who did not get selected for 2015 and
2016 will feel motivated to again propose for 2017 !

More info about the locations and teams will soon be published on the

They are all collected together in an album on Flickr:

For anyone in the photos, you are free to do whatever you want with the

If I got anyone's name wrong, I apologize! It was a fantastic whirlwind

a photo of you, but don't see it here, please just poke me and I'll try to

[CREATE] LGM 2014 talks - Recordings (& Slides)

2014-05-04 Thread Michael Schumacher
Hi,

thanks to João Calligaris (camera), Jon Nordby (tech), Ville Pätsi
(tech, editing) and Open Source Video (camera), we have recordings of
the LGM talks.

We are making the videos available from the GIMP download server:

http://download.gimp.org/pub/gimp/lgm/2014/day_1/
http://download.gimp.org/pub/gimp/lgm/2014/day_2/
http://download.gimp.org/pub/gimp/lgm/2014/day_3/
http://download.gimp.org/pub/gimp/lgm/2014/day_4/

The talks are numbered in their actual order, a bit different from the
official program.

Unless a torrent has [NO_SLIDES] in its name, it includes the slides as
well (some slides are missing, some lightning talks may have none, and
for some reason the download from Slideshare doesn't work for me).
If your talk is missing them, please check if you can add a url to your
slides in the LGM 2014 program.

Please use the torrents, they have at least one web seed that makes them
work in environments where torrent is blocked, and elsewhere they are
the only way to get somewhat decent download speeds once there are other
seeders.

... and share them!

We're planning to upload the videos to
https://www.youtube.com/user/gimpofficial

NB: As there are some objections to using Youtube, please speak up if
you can suggest a different platform. Also, of course, feel free to
upload them to a LGM channel.

[CREATE] LGM 2014 Final Report

2014-04-07 Thread Louis Desjardins
Hi all,

Now that LGM is over, we need to put together a final report for LGM 2014
as to keep a trace of what was accomplished.

Please add to the short list below if you think we need more.

   - Summary of what is LGM : what, why, who, where, when
   - Short history so readers have a sense of the importance of the event
   over the years.
   - What has been accomplished in 2014
   - A report in 2 parts by each team present at LGM : a short summary of
200 words or less and a report as detailed as necessary and as long as
   necessary.
   - Quotes and/or thoughts by participants
   - Statistics of 2014 (and if possible, a brief note on how those have
evolved over the past years if we have the numbers)
   - List of sponsors and partners to the event
   - Looking towards 2015 (and maybe 2016?)
   - Images and logos

I am ready to put a form together on the web once we have gathered some
feedback about the structure of the report. I believe we do have such forms
ready and we would only need to review them before posting the official
"Call for Reports"!

I suggest we make our report available online in a dedicated page and as a
nicely layed out PDF that could be printed as A4 and Letter formats. We
need volunteers to put that together.

The report helps us keep track of what has been done and this in turn helps
us discuss with our partners and sponsors. As we're growing, this becomes
critical.

Timely feedback will be much appreciated.

Cheers!

[CREATE] LGM 2014 website needs love!

2014-01-26 Thread Louis Desjardins
Hi all,

Our website needs love and care!

1) The content that is actually displayed on the front page belongs in a
secondary level in my view. When we arrive on the site, it seems we are
already in the interior pages. We need to know what LGM is about, where it
takes place, when, who is it for, before we see the "news". Also, the
"About" page has an immense picture of the group in Madrid but we don’t
know that unless we’ve been there.

I understand that the news are promoted by the last date posted but there
must be a way, if we want to keep that structure, to push one post on top
and make it stick there. This post could then be what should appear in the
front page. I don’t have the solution but paths to solution maybe.

2) Submit button of forms is now showing as a floating element in the
template. People won’t find easily that button and won’t be able to
register. The button is now located in the top-right corner while it should
be at the bottom of the form.

3) Notification emails don’t go out.

Can a good soul take care of that?

Thanks!

Funny anecdote regarding a similar question on #gimp recently:

the site developer.gimp.org is maintained very, very cost-effectively - read:
unfortunately the information there used to be good enough for many years, and
so it was outdated.

Somewhere, the need to find an explanation for this was born. Mere laziness
seemed so strange an explanation that the 'official' reason became 'the site
credentials were lost, we can't update'.

When this explanation reached me two weeks ago, it caused three things:

1. repeated contact between my desk and by forehead
2. listening to MLP's Pinkie Pie 'Smile' song, one of the typography versions
on YouTube. Twice.
3. a quick change to the one of the file in /www/developer.gimp.org verified
that the content is editable and it is the live site

Our developer docs are updated now.

Conclusions:

1. communicate
2. watch more MLP
3. don't invent explanations if laziness is a sufficient one

It's a good statement of intent, and as such it has my tentative
approval as an initial draft. I think it would needs to go further
about con organiser responses as it evolves.

The PyCon UK CoC (http://pyconuk.net/CodeOfConduct, full text below)
does that very well, and it's about the tersest one with teeth that
I've seen. I like the brevity and the "we trust" of its opening
'spirit' paragraphs. I like its reassurances to complainants in the
third para (because they may otherwise not come forward, and/or may
have a dread of not being taken seriously), and I like how the bullet
point 'consequences' section enumerates specifically how it isn't
fooling around.

Anything based on it should absolutely enumerate different notions of
appropriate behaviour to fit LGM's ethos, an excellent point Susan has
raised upthread with what has to be *the* perfect example.

I think you are reading too much into this. There is a practical reason why
voting for the next venue happened/happens in a face to face meeting. Somebody
need to (1) volunteer, (2) be trusted by the community, to *organize* the next
event.

The latter is most rare - it is not as if any random keen 16-year-old can cope
with the logistics of hundreds of people from different countries arriving, nor
any random unseen unheard of rarely participating person be trusted to
volunteer to organize.

I think you are advocating what some called "social bullying". Many LGM

[CREATE] LGM and divisiveness

2014-01-18 Thread Gregory Pittman
As we approach LGM 2014, it would be good to know that at some point we
all are rowing in the same direction. We need to put aside differences
of opinion and consider how we can make LGM an attractive and
trouble-free event for everyone.

Even without some artificial code that we might sprinkle holy water on
and make sacred, I think we have established that most of us have an
opinion that wants to keep LGM a friendly event for everyone who attends.

Let's face it, LGM isn't a democracy in some elective/voting sense,
since it is very unclear who has voting rights and whether all voting
rights are the same. We don't have a clear way of generating consensus.
We may have opinions for and against, but the (apparent) absence of an
opinion may be an indicator of unawareness of the vote or even what it's
about (or just being fed up with it all). And someone who has never
attended before and never will again has a vote too.

I also think it is magical thinking to believe that somehow this can all
be hashed out at LGM. Just look at what happens as the venue for the
next LGM gets "decided" at LGM. The vote, such as it is, takes place
only with those attending the meeting, as if those not present don't
care and don't matter. I suppose if they did care, they might be more
likely not to care about decisions they were left out of.

I think we all have experiences with people who are obsessed with some
issue. All they can talk about is their issue. People don't realize how
IMPORTANT this is. How ESSENTIAL it is. About all you can do is to avoid
this person, not start up a conversation with this person, unless you
like to argue. In an organization, this can be toxic. Let's try not to
drift in that direction.
