Just run it through a validator and you will see the obvious small

end. I also think it is unique that the main header re-sizes :)

Have fun coding!

I find the banner interesting in that it changes size to accommodate
the browser window, but the main menu wraps needlessly (i.e.,
"Contact" drops below "Home").

Yeh that bits cool.
I went to one of the gallery pages - there no loader and it was quite a wait
for the first large image. Whilst waiting the border does not sit where it
should be, it is up and behind the thumbs. I would have thought a .clear in
the thumbnail container would fix it.

On Windows Vista, looks fine in Chrome, IE8, Firefox, and Safari, as long as
the window is large enough. But look at it in a 800x600 window. The header
image reduces to fit, while the navigation bar causes a scroll bar, so that
there is a gap to the right of the header image when you scroll right. Kind
of strange looking, I think. I'd say that wasn't a problem, since so few
people browse on their computers at 800x600. But given this behavior, I'm
surprised that it looks fine on a Droid X -- the entire image and navigation
magnify and reduce together.

Mac BookPro [116.5dpi] OS X 10.4 most any browser at all at -1, -2, or
-3 font-scaling reproduces the issue shown in your screenshot.

By far and away the vast majority of sites on the Web break with "cruel
and unusual treatment" [also known as "Welcome to the World Wide Web,"
and basic "stress-testing"]. This might include, but is not necessarily
just limited too, testing at up and down font-scaling, testing at
minimum font-size at 16, 24, and 36; and, so on...

Very, at least for those using text-only zoom instead of full page zoom.
Remember that all who could use page zoom instead of text-only zoom won't,
and that minimum mimics text-only. Both zoom types have their advantages.
Also both zooms and minimum have in common that they are defense mechanisms.
Absent offense, defense is unnecessary, and consequently, breakage is
generally avoided.

Set minimum font size to 20 or 24px in a browser that offers it, and watch
white (shopping cart) text disappear and "appointment" move to the background
accompanied by "view".

http://fm.no-ip.com/Auth/Sites/Ksc/ can show how zoom and minimum can be
accommodated by being unnecessary, and that fonts need not be sub-preference
(less than 100% of default on p or body) for a web design to work.

Thanks David and Alan for taking time to look and explain.
I had decided and allowed for some but not the smallest monitors, setting a
min width of 760px and max width of 1200px. Middle ground?
I have followed you references back to positon:fixed. I'm not commercial so
don't have to be available to everyone IE4 up or Linux.
As my very first attempt, first priority is to get a web page out there
hopefully to IE7 or better browsers. A gamble yes.
Subsequently if anyone looks and browser version becomes an issue / can drop
back and rethink my webpage layout, taking onboard your comments.
Frustrating that the popout menu requires very quick precise mouse selection
to work. So, once visible on the web, my first objective is to rework that
sub-menu.
As a learner CSS every single aspect I touch has huge ripples of
implications, so I get transfixed not knowing what is safe to ignore and
what is mission critical. If only I could short-cut and mainline your
experience!
With the bones set out just a little more CSS skill should transform the
page appearance, so this will become my next objective.
Thanks for your help along the way to an almost just passable webpage?

Your menu is absolutely position along with other elements on the page.
This is your page with a smaller window.

This is why a different layout was suggested.

IE/6 and down don't understand (do not support) position: fixed; [1]
and revert to position: static;
Google, subject line: position:fixed; will bring up hundreds of links
attempting to deal with this problem.

It is encouraging that Anne van Kesteren, Georg Sortun, and many other
friends of the Web, share their work for work-around solutions in IE/6.

Whatever drum you wish to follow, you may want to let your page run rail
to rail, or set an overall horizontal width, so the page will be
functional even if the user is not on a 1024 monitor.

that I can take it into account when I rethink my design.
What you seem to say is that CSS is really limited in what it can achieve
cross browsers, so stick to simple well established layouts.

You might consider this layout by Georg Sortun as a base layout. It works
cross-browser.
<http://www.gunlaug.no/tos/moa_8b.html>
Put the menu in the right column, and the image of the gentlepeople in the
left column. I really can't help with the menu-- it's impossible to hold the
fly-out in any browser.
A simple menu alternative that would save a lot of grief and frustration
might be to use a nested list instead-- no javascript need for IE/6.

[css-d] -browser check

2008-08-12 Thread tony
Hi,
Thought I had it sorted, checked IE7 and Gecko, validated my CSS and HTML
all ok.
Tried site out on different machine under IE6 and it went to pieces.
My banner should be a composite of background colour, image and shadow text,
thought it worked if very dirty. Under IE6 text has slipped away and lost my
width setting and gained a margin.
The pop-out menu that's given me so much grief has slipped out of the
sidebar.
Apart from that everything else is working?
as can be seen at:
www.somersetspiess.co.uk
Can anyone please give me a clue as to where I need to go to start to sort
out this IE6 mess?

Hi Jennifer

I have checked in FF, IE6/7, Opera9 and Safari (pc). All works fine except
that in IE6 the font size is too small. This is caused by your using the
default size of 62.5% in the body rule and then font-size:100% in the IE6
conditional. For this to be 12px, you will need to change your conditional
to 120%.

Cheers

Hi, Jennifer:

I don't see any problems in Firefox 2, IE6, or Safari all on Windows
XP. The only discrepancy I see really between them is the font size in
the navigation is a couple of sizes smaller in IE6. Other than that
everything looks good.

[css-d] browser check

2007-08-05 Thread JGardner
Hi,

I did this site (it is a final project for a class) and have been told that it
has problems in IE 6. I checked it on my computer IE 6 and Firefox and did not
have any problems.

If you have a second could you please check
http://webtech.tstc.edu/students/gardnerj/cns/index.htm

And let me know any problems you find. I am sorry I don't have any details, my
instructor just emailed my and said - "Please add support for IE6", so I am not
exactly sure what isn't working - I am assuming it is the navigation because I
don't know what else wouldn't work.

Thank you,
Jennifer

Seemed to close it in IE/6.0 (xp :: local). I did not check 5.5.

After the previous site checks, I have changed the site design (made
it simpler). However, when I look at the site in WinIE 5.5 an d 6.0
the yellow rounded corner background gains a huge yellow square on the
right hand side. Can anybody tell me why please?

Probably depends on what versions of IE you mean and at what window size
and at what font-size preference.
Designing Web sites without running the software that most people in the
world employ to view Web sites must be difficult.

A good way to check your clients pages with other versions of IE is to
install multiple IE versions on the same machine. There are a few
tutorials on how to do this, but the easiest one is the Multiple IEs
installer from TredoSoft. http://tredosoft.com/Multiple_IE You can
also check out the page about this on Position is Everything
http://www.positioniseverything.net/articles/multiIE.html and QuirksMode

This will make it a lot easier.

I think in order to get reliable cross-browser rendering you will need
to get the inline styles into the css file and validate the markup and
the css.

Andy, it worked fine for me in XP.
When you get to putting real content in the sidebar, it may need to be
wider and/or you may have to reduce the horizontal padding to
accommodate long words in narrow windows.
The markup will probably validate if you close all instances of the
final space:

Try adding a 'hasLayout'[1] trigger...
#sign_in_div {width: 96%;}

No problems whatsoever in my Safari.
Can't see any differences between Safari 2.0.4 and Firefox 1.5.x/2.x -
other than that the non-existing images show up differently.

Generally: there are a few weak spots in that layout when font-resize or
'minimum font size'/'ignore font size' is applied. Some overlapping and
overshooting text in the good browsers, and expansion in IE/win.

Thanks for the advice and help so far, that seems to have sorted out the
problem with the middle part of the site.

However what I am still getting is in IE 7.0 under the user log in box on the
left hand side, there is a picture and sign up text, however this does not show
up in IE 6.0 ??

Finally when I tested the page with browsershots.org on safari 2.0 on mac,
there are problems with the main navigation and header .

Any ideas on what is causing this ?

Adding...

Something in that column is too wide - as least as IE6 sees it, and IE6
doesn't respect declared dimensions and will auto-expand the container

The header-arrangement is fragile in all browsers. There's no
centering-effect in Firefox and Opera, just an adjustment for the h1.
The main problem in IE6 is that a 100% wide #nav won't allow the main
navigation to move up alongside the floating h1 and appear to be
centered - if that is your intention.

- IE6 breaks it completely by dropping the left column and making all
columns and the entire page too wide.
- Opera 9 is fine.
- Safari 2.0.4 hides everything inside #main_body.
- IE/Mac breaks it somewhat similar to IE6.

The page shows some weaknesses in all browsers on wide screens, so maybe
a max-width around 1100px would be a good idea.

Ian, I made a /grave error/ in my previous reply to your post. *Do not*
put an xml declaration above your /html doctype/.
An xml declaration is /never/
used with an html doctype. My mistake.

Ian,

It seems ok in xp standalone ie/6.0 here (can't vouch for what it is
doing in win/2k).However, it is broken in xp standalone ie/5.5 and
ie/5.01. The following helped ie/5.5 and ie/5.01 on a local file (you'll
have to try it on your end):

-- put ie/6 and down in quirksmode by adding an xml declaration
immediately above the doctype (to make 6 and down easier to control--
ie7 will not be effected):

http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd";>

Then make these additions to the rulesets:
-- body { text-align: center; } /*add to center the page*/
-- #wrapper { text-align: left; }/*add to reset the text*/
--#subnav { clear: both;}/*add to clear the float*/

All of the above (if it works for you "live") deals only with the
"middle of the page" question you wrote about. There are still other
issues-- but, first things first.
Regards,
~dL
PS Fear not about writing whenever you hit a snag :-) .

Would be even nicer if you could iron out the overlapping/lost text

[css-d] Browser Check: Sliding CSS/JS Hybrid Drop Down Menu

2006-12-04 Thread Steven Tchorzewski
Howdy Y'all,

This sliding CSS/JS hybrid drop down menu that I have been working
with various incarnations of for years now. After much fuss I have it
working in IE6+, FireFox, Opera, and NS6+ - I finally feel like it has
the real potential (in my mind) to become my "go to" menu for all
client sites (that call for a drop down navigation solution) that I
develop from now on.

So here's my baby:
http://www.plattdaddy.com/rollovers/seo-friendly-drop.htm

Please let me know if you see any bugs that I need to work out. Most
importantly I would like to find out about its display and
functionality in as many of the "oddball browsers" as I can as well as
all of the more modern Mac browsers if anyone can take a quick look to
check it out for me. I want these boys to be as compatible as possible
when the testing and fixing is finished. In the grand scheme of things
my plan is to: Make a tutorial and give the menu away to other web
masters and developers looking to find an easy solution that will fit
their needs. Just like all of the wonderful online tutorials and
working examples that I studied, dissected and learned from were
explained and given to me in the spirit of learning and sharing the
knowledge.

Thanks all.

[css-d] browser check please, safari and some IE weirdness

2006-10-01 Thread GypsiiRose Baptiste
Hi all,
I've done some browsercam captures, and it looks like in some IE versions
and also Safari I've got a bit of weirdness in how the css displays.
The problem in IE seems to be that some versions display the green sidebar
content (on the right) pushed down quite far. (that would be the grocery bag
etc.)
In Safari, the top nav bar displays the text in RED! Why?? (it is supposed
to be white on orange)
This is what I've noticed from the browsercam captures, but it is a little
difficult to see everything, so I'd appreciate anybody else's input who can
check it firsthand and perhaps have some suggestions!

Here is the page:

Here is the CSS:

That's odd, especially since it is the same image being linked to
from three separate locations. The div containing the filler image
on the left was copied en toto, renamed, and the left: classifier
tweaked for proper offset at center and right.

This is a bare design, no content filled in (besides a little

what you see.

All feedback is good, even if you only look and don't see any
issues (onlist or offlist, per your preference).

If it deviates much from this:

[css-d] Browser Check: cssmaze.christianmontoya.com

2005-12-14 Thread Christian Montoya
I just finished a page at http://cssmaze.christianmontoya.com

It uses the adjacent sibling selector as well as :hover on divs and
z-index. It doesn't work in IE Win or Opera Win 8.5. Works fine in FF
1.5 and FF 1.0.7

If you are thinking, "what in the world?," it's a maze. Use your
pointing device and the divs should go transparent as you hover over
them, starting from the top left and following the arrows. That is, if
your browser supports it.

Please let me know how it performs in any/all browsers. Might be a
good test of browser CSS support. Any off-topic comments can be
directed to the blog link at the bottom of the page. Thanks!
