I've tried this in Firefox 3.6.8 for Ubuntu Linux, with default text
size set at 16, and in Epiphany 2.30.2 (Linux Webkit-based browser) with
default text size set at 12.

These settings usually mean sites display pretty much the same across
the two browsers, but for some reason in this site, the text shows
slightly larger in Epiphany, causing the baby 0-12 months text in the
left-hand column to wrap onto two lines. It's not a problem - just an
observation. Other than that, the site looks good.

If the text size is increased to 24 or more, then the header-navigation
links wrap, but the header doesn't increase in size to accommodate this.
 Setting #header min-height:100px, rather than height:100px should
help; setting the height in ems would be even better.

I don't have a problem reading the header-links text, but I use a tool
from Vision Australia to check colour contrast for visibility, and these
two combinations do fail that test. I find this tool really useful -
http://www.visionaustralia.org.au/info.aspx?page=628 - it's designed for
Windows, but also runs on Linux using Wine.

The black text Girls over the photo is very hard to read, but maybe
not too much of a problem in context.

Overall, I like the layout. It's clear and uncluttered and I found it
easy to use.

Hope this helps.

Lesley

[css-d] site design/layout feedback desired

2010-08-24 Thread Francesco
Looking for feedback on a design I'm almost done with. Don't bother
testing functionality, nothing is active yet except for some simple
validation on the login and register pages. Just click links and let
me know what you think of the look and feel. FYI - the only product
right now is under Baby - Boys - Pullovers. Mostly looking for
feedback on the product page and the cart page, general layout, and
navigation.

Site is built using ASP.NET 4.0, ASP.NET MVC 2.0, SQL Server 2008,
using an MVVM pattern.

Not exactly my kind of thing, but nevertheless I did not see any
particular problem with it, Francesco. O.K. in Mac OS X 10.4. Mac FF at
16px minimum font-size. Same for Camino, Mac Opera, Mac Safari [all at
default]. IETester IE 6/7/8 looked O.K., too. A few the usual markup
validation issues here and there...

Best,
~d

Viewed only in FF4.0b2.

The bottom 75% of the words gifts and help are fully obscured by home01.jpg.

4 items...register are all but invisible due to lack of contrast. Join our
email list is marginally better.

The facebook twitter icons measure about 5mm X 5mm. The only way to know
what they are is to look at the statusbar on hover. The cart icon is worse,
maybe 2mm X 3mm.

Width of cart page is about half the width of my viewport, looks like needs
to be at least 50% wider. Longer titles in left column require two rows to
fit the text.

All content below help in left column is functionally invisible microscopic
text.

Boy's pullover sweater is about 4cm X 4cm until clicked, marginally bigger
after clicked, not big enough to see any detail to speak of.

I don't think I'd use the word bag on the add to shopping button. Home page
uses word cart, so I'd stick with that.

Overall it's a whole lot better than the average shopping site, largely
because most text is legible, and the look is relatively uncluttered.
