Trent Reinsmith The Covert War Against Rock Alex Constantine Feral House 2554 Lincoln Blvd. #1059 Venice, CA 90291 200 pages - $14.95 Loaded in the CD player as I write this is the Okeh Rhythm Blues Story Box Set. The music on this set spans the years from 1949-1957. It can be safely assumed that the musicians that played on these records had problems, however the situations they faced most likely pale in comparison to the predicaments that the subjects of Constantines book faced. While lost love, back stabbers and having your money "managed" by crooked labels, agents and other handlers was the rule back in the 40s and 50s, these folks didnt have to (for the most part) worry about being killed for their views. I am sure they were being watched by the powers that be, but as long as it remained out of the white bread mainstream, everything was fine. The problems started when some folks opened their mouths a little too far and spoke up a little too loud and the message made the top 10. Its hard to put a finger on when it all went astray and became evident that something very wrong was going on. Maybe it was the plane crash that claimed the lives of the Big Bopper, Buddy Holly and Richie Valens. Maybe it was the 1966 death of Bobby Fuller, apparently from ingesting gasoline. Its hard to say if these deaths were the beginning of something very evil or just accidents or suicide. And while Constantine does not investigate the distant past, he does show that this phenomenon of suspicious death in the music industry has not stopped or slowed since the 1960s; in fact it has increased. Rock musicians are famous for singing about the type of things that make the powers that be nervous. From the blatant lyrics about sex of the 40s and 50s R B bands to Elvis gyrating hips, to the Stones drug use (and abuse) in the 60s. The 70s gave us the Doors, more Stones, and John Lennon before punk took it over the top. The 80s saw the birth of gangsta rap and grunge and the movements continue to this day. And while some may say that all the lyrics, political statements and political movements are all about image and posturing, someone obviously thinks otherwise. This book takes a look at the someone else involved in the deaths of many of yesterdays and todays musicians. Instead of just jumping in with conspiracy theory, Constantine gives a good amount of well-footnoted background information and history before the death toll begins to mount. History is given on the Mafia and government involvement in the music industry. The author then takes great pains to show how the government was involved in the supply and use of LSD as a mind weakening and personality molding drug and not the alleged mind expander it was being hyped as. Constantine also points out how many of the underground heroes and their cronies had government ties. And then the killings start and the truth gets stretched in the mainstream press. Mama Cass chokes on a ham sandwich. Brian Jones drowns in his pool. Hendrix chokes on his vomit. Jim Morrison remains alive. An obsessed fan killed John Lennon. Bob Marley dies of cancer. Peter Tosh dies by gunshot. Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls were gang hits and most recently Michael Hutchence was a victim of autoerotic hanging. That is what "they" want you to believe, but Constantine has made it his job to show you the places where these stories and reality dont agree. Constantine writes of the nervousness inspired by Cass political aspirations. How the murderer of Brian Jones confessed on his deathbed. How the development of the Jim Morrison lives theory was put into place to throw people of the scent of a possible murder. How Bob Marley suspiciously developed cancer and his more suspicious "treatment. Why Peter Toshs killers went uninvestigated. He points out the incongruities in the Tupac and Biggie murder investigations. And wonders how a severely beaten Michael Hutchence could hang himself with a broken hand? The clear message being that when you open your mouth too far, someone with the power and influence may be right around the corner to shut it for you, in fact you may even know and trust that person. A department spokesman said most of his targets had white congregations. Jay Scott Ballinger, 38, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Indianapolis to 29 criminal counts in 10 separate indictments and complaints unsealed Tuesday. The plea followed a nationwide investigation by the FBI, the Treasury Department's Bureau of *** Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the Indiana State Fire Marshals Office, many other state and local investigators and the National Church Arson Task Force, set up by President Clinton in 1996 after numerous reports of arson at black churches. *** According to a plea agreement unsealed Tuesday, the Justice Department will recommend that Ballinger be sentenced to more than 42 years in prison. He still faces additional charges in Georgia for allegedly setting five church fires from December 1998 to January 1999, including one blaze in which a firefighter died. A Justice Department statement said Ballinger grew up in the Yorktown area but traveled the country extensively during his adult life, "studying and practicing his beliefs as a Luciferian. He frequently expressed his hostility toward organized Christianity, signed individuals he met to contracts with the devil and termed himself a missionary of Lucifer." Ballinger began traveling with an 18-year-old woman named Angela Wood in late 1993, the department said. While living in motels with Ballinger, Wood worked short term as a nightclub dancer at a number of locations to pay their living expenses. The department said Wood often acted as Ballinger's lookout as he set the fires. The pair worked late at night or early in the morning, the government said, usually targeting isolated rural churches. Wood pleaded guilty in November 1999 to several counts and has been cooperating with the government investigation. She will be sentenced when the case against Ballinger is completed. A federal judge set a sentencing date for Ballinger in 70 days. The National Church Arson Task Force, headed by the Justice Department, has investigated 900 fires since 1996. WILHAM The Star Press MUNCIE -- For more than 5 years, police say, Jay Scott Ballinger worshiped Satan, burned churches and persuaded teenagers to sign blood contracts with the devil. He recruited more than 40 teenagers from the Yorktown and Daleville areas to sign written contracts with their own blood that gave their "body and soul to Lucifer for eternity," according to Daleville police, who released one of the contracts Wednesday. Ballinger, 36, of rural Yorktown, is in federal custody, recovering from burns he said he received while inflicting his own hate on an Ohio church, according to court documents. He has been charged with seven church arsons, all in Indiana. Ballinger's injuries led Ball State Police Sgt. Steve Hiatt, who overheard ambulance radio traffic on a scanner, to check out Ballinger's story of how he got burned and call federal authorities. ** "I just got lucky," said Hiatt, who spent most of Wednesday giving interviews to television, radio and newspaper reporters. "I am kind of embarrassed and flattered. I really didn't do that much. I have spent more time talking to you guys than what I did Ballinger." Federal authorities have said they didn't want to speculate as to the reasons Ballinger might have set fire to many as 50 churches in 11 states. According to court documents, Ballinger and two alleged accomplices performed devil worship rituals and painted satanic symbols on several churches before setting them on fire. According to Daleville police, Ballinger for several years recruited teens to sign written contracts with the devil. Joe Schmitt of Daleville remembers his encounters with Ballinger. Several years ago, one of Schmitt's children came to him and told him that Ballinger had tried to get the child to sign such a contract. "My child didn't know him and didn't even want to talk to him," Schmitt said. "I wasn't scared; I was just concerned for the other children he had gone up to. I am kind of glad he got caught." At the time, Schmitt called authorities and with Daleville police officer Mark Brewer confronted Ballinger at his home on Delaware County Road 300-S, asking him to leave all children in the area alone. By then it was too late for some teenagers. Ballinger gave Brewer as many as 40 contracts signed by teens in the Yorktown-Daleville area. Brewer said when his department first learned about Ballinger, it invited experts on cults to speak to its officers and school administrators. Throughout the years, Brewer has been in contact with parents who came to him concerned about their children. Brewer has a copy of one of the contracts given to him by a parent. The contract allegedly is covered with smeared blood and has Ballinger's name at the bottom as the author. * According to the contract, members of the club had to "promise in blood to do all types of service and evil to our lord until the end of time in business, in church and in the community. Demps, I am 49 deathrow prisoner and am currently under deathwatch at the Florida State Prison, having had my 4th death warrant signed by Governor Bush on Monday April 24, 2000. I was convicted and sentenced to death for the 1976 of killing a fellow prisoner. Quite simply I am innocent of this crime and have spent the last 22 years accumulating the necessary evidence to prove, that various Department of Correction prison officials - in conjunction with an unscrupulous former Prosecutor named Thomas Elwell, did indeed manufacture this case. The reason being they perceived me as having "escaped" the death penalty when in June 1972 the US Supreme Court struck down the death penalty commuting my sentence to life. It is a fact, the Courts in denying my appeals in this case, have often point to as justification to execute me for this case. Blending the lines of a prior conviction to carry out what the Court stopped before. By basically saying to me that the State did not get a chance to execute me then, so it's 'okay' for them to do so now, regardless of the innocence factor. I would not have been sentenced to death without that prior conviction as you need only consider the disparity in sentencing between myself and my two co-defendants who both received life. I use the word manufactured because I was not involved in this murder but the prison officials upon seeing an opportunity, manipulated and re-wrote this case to include me. They bought and paid for everything, concealed exculpatory evidence, 'lost or misplaced' critical files, that had they been discovered by me at the time of trial, would have proven my innocence. They made and delivered promises and rewards to all who aided in this conviction, be they prisoners or a guard. The proof of such has come in the form of many prisoners coming forward, issuing affidavits admitting their part in getting that conviction. But because this evidence was discovered so many years after my trial the Courts have ruled consistently on one issue, the evidence is procedurally and time barred, claiming you are just to late to present proof of your innocence! We discovered reams of documents about the 'so called star inmate witness' Larry Hathaway that proves beyond all doubt that he was then and continues to be today crazy! This is not opinion - we have the DOC medical records to prove it and how they knew he was on psycothropic medication and they used him anyway, but withheld that fact from us. In 1998 while going through a Clemency investigation my attorney Bill Salmon received from the State 2000 - 3000 pages of documents and amongst them was a single page document that for the last 21 years had been concealed and withheld from any of my attorneys - from the time of trial throughout the 22 years of this case. It is an official Department of Corrections memo written by the Chief Prison Inspector Cecil L. Sewell to the then Secretary of the Department of Corrections Louie Wainwright, it was written Sept. 7, 1976 the day after the murder of this prisoner and it clearly states that the victim in his dying declaration named a single individual and someone other than Bennie Demps! The fact that this document was previously concealed and withheld from us during trial and throughout the appellate process and the fact that it does not name me as the killer, became the basis for my 4th motion for post conviction relief filed in the Bradford County Circuit Court in July 1999. My attorney then filed a Supplement to the motion highlighting three affidavits of the representing attorney's involved at trial affirming that they had never seen the document and all stated they repeatedly sought exculpatory evidence and were repeatedly told nothing existed. This fact is in the trial record. In October 1999 the Judge felt there was merit to my motion and ordered the State to respond by January 15, 2000 and to explain why I was not entitled to the relief I am seeking. Their response was empty, they provided no explanation for anything, simply a rehash of old responses put forth by the State in past appeals. My attorney then filed on April 13, 2000 one more Supplement and with it his own affidavit of how and when he came by the document. We were awaiting the Judge to rule and hopefully order an evidentiary hearing so that the truth could finally be told. The Governor of the State of Florida, in spite of this pending appeal based on factual innocence, in spite of his promises of Clemency being the catch net for innocence" in spite of the fact that the former Governor Lawton Chiles felt the this case needed more investigation - simply rushed to judgment prematurely signing my 4th death warrant while I still had an appeal pending. WILHAM The Star Press INDIANAPOLIS -- The fate of arson suspect Jay Scott Ballinger might be determined more by his injuries than a judge or jury. Ballinger underwent "major" surgery Thursday to repair second- and third-degree burns over his body, according to his attorney, Steve Riggs. Riggs, who was appointed by a federal court, said Ballinger underwent skin grafts along with other procedures he would not specify. Ballinger has been in an isolation ward at Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis since he was arrested by federal authorities on seven charges of church arson. Ballinger confessed to as many as 50 arsons in 11 states, according to court documents. Police believe Ballinger, 36, of rural Daleville, was injured while setting fire to an Ohio church on Feb. 6. But he did not seek medical treatment until 3 days later, authorities said. Riggs said the first day he met his client he was concerned about Ballinger's injuries and how he would recover. On Thursday he told The Star Press he fully expected his client to survive. "I expect that if the surgery is successful that he will survive," Riggs said. "I anticipate that after today he will be OK." Riggs said he did not know Ballinger's condition after his operation. Federal authorities have declined to release his condition since the arrest. Last week, Riggs wondered how his client could confess to the church arsons while in such serious medical condition. Riggs met with his client for 45 minutes Wednesday. The attorney would not say where Ballinger was working at the time of his arrest, nor would he discuss the whereabouts of his client's parents, who have not been seen at the family's home in Salem Township since the arrest. The Carnivore system gives law enforcement email interception capabilities that were never contemplated when Congress passed the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA), codified in relevant part at 18 U.S.C. 2510-22 and 18 USC 3121-27. Carnivore raises new legal issues that cry out for Congressional attention if we are to preserve Fourth Amendment rights in the digital age. The existence of Carnivore first came to light in the April 6 testimony of Attorney Robert Corn-Revere to the Constitution Subcommittee. Its operation was further detailed in a report that appeared in today's Wall Street Journal (copy attached). According to these reports, the Carnivore system -- essentially a computer running specialized software-- is attached directly to an Internet Service Provider's (ISP) network. Carnivore is attached either when law enforcement has a Title III order from a court permitting it to intercept in real time the contents of the electronic communications of a specific individual, or a trap and trace or pen register order allowing to it obtain the "numbers" related to communications from or to a specified target. But unlike the operation of a traditional a pen register, trap and trace device, or wiretap of a conventional phone line, Carnivore gives the FBI access to all traffic over the ISP's network, not just the communications to or from a particular target. Carnivore, which is capable of analyzing millions of messages per second, purportedly retains only the messages of the specified target, although this process takes place without scrutiny of either the ISP or a court. Carnivore permits access to the email of every customer of an ISP and the email of every person who communicates with them. Carnivore is roughly equivalent to a wiretap capable of accessing the contents of the conversations of all of the phone company's customers, with the "assurance" that the FBI will record only conversations of the specified target. This "trust us, we are the Government" approach is the antithesis of the procedures required under our the wiretapping laws. They authorize limited electronic surveillance of the communications of specified persons, usually conducted by means of specified communications devices. They place on the provider of the communications medium the responsibility to separate the communications of persons authorized to be intercepted from other communications. Currently, law enforcement is required to "minimize" its interception of non-incriminating communications of a target of a wiretap order. Carnivore is not a minimization tool. Instead, Carnivore maximizes law enforcement access to the communications of non-targets. In his testimony to your subcommittee Mr. Corn-Revere described the experience of his client, an ISP that was required to install Carnivore when presented with a trap and trace order. He detailed his client's concerns that a trap and trace order in the context of the Internet revealed information that Congress did not contemplate when it authorized their limited use. In the traditional telephone context, those orders reveal nothing more than the numbers dialed to or from a single telephone line. In the Internet context, these orders and certainly Carnivore, likely involve ascertaining the suspect's e-mail address, as well as header information that may provide information regarding the content of the communication. As we have stated previously, the ACLU does not believe that it is clear that the Government can serve an order on an Internet service provider and obtain the e-mail addresses of incoming and outgoing messages for a particular subscriber. Further, it is not clear whether law enforcement agents use or should use authority under the pen register statute to access a variety of data, including Internet Protocol addresses, dialup numbers and e-mail logs. George W Bush would see a clear path before him leading straight to the Whitehouse. He's so far ahead in the polls that all other candidates look almost insignificant. The media are in love with him, and the Republican Party has pinned all their hopes on this one man to reunite their broken party. Just one problem: he's a former drug user. In a country that locks people away for decades for simple possession, this is a major liability for Bush. Especially since he's a "tough on crime" candidate who insists that people should pay dearly for their mistakes-no matter what age or what the circumstances. While Bush has not fully admitted to drug use, he's sending very clear signals in that direction. Even though he's lowered the age at which minors can be tried as adults in Texas to 14, when asked about crimes in his own youth he asks them to be forgotten and forgiven. This was G.W. in a New Hampshire TV interview with WMUR when they asked about cocaine: "I'm not going to talk about what I did as a child. What I am going to talk about - and I am going to say this consistently - [is that] it is irrelevant what I did 20 to 30 years ago. What's relevant is that I have learned from any mistakes I made. I do not want to send signals to anybody that what Gov. Bush did 30 years ago is cool to try." And what's he talking about trying? Something he "did" as late as age 32 (20 years ago) that would not be cool for others to "try." What-sex? alcohol? Well, actually, he offers confident denials of alcoholism and marital infidelity. He was a heavy drinker for years, and admits that alcohol "got the best of him", but he swore off booze on his 40th birthday, and says he hasn't had a drink since, and says he was never an alcoholic. His refusal to deny drugs in his past is even more interesting in light of the fact that Al Gore, his only potential rival, admits to smoking a joint or two while at Harvard (perhaps with his college roommate, actor Tommy Lee Jones.) If Gore smoked pot, then what does Bush have to lose by admitting he smoked a little as well? This is the main issue I have been trying to publicize on my satirical Web site,

Fuelled by fears of rampant anarchy, pornography and a digital black economy, the Government is pressing ahead with measures of intrusion into cyberspace without parallel anywhere outside Russia. The legislation, known as the Regulation of Investigatory Powers (RIP) Bill, authorises government agencies to snoop, often without warrant, on the e-mail and internet activities of everyone with an internet connection. "Black boxes" will connect internet service providers directly to the HQ of MI5. The security services will be provided with new powers to use this machinery to monitor British domestic internet activities. People are up in arms. True, the internet can be a scary place - particularly for those who can't remember when the telephone and the printing press induced similar anxieties. Some people in government are also scared of the internet. They believe criminality and tax evasion will flourish in cyberspace. Having spent much of the past decade trying unsuccessfully to figure out ways of controlling the medium, government has struck upon a novel idea: make sure everyone using the internet knows they are being watched. But although Britain already has the highest level of conventional mail and phone interception, per capita, than anywhere in the Western world, at least those intrusions are regarded as extraordinary. The real problem with the RIP Bill is that it builds surveillance into the core of the internet, and thus destabilises the very foundation of the medium. An unprecedented alliance has formed an ad-hoc coalition of opposition to the Bill. Yesterday, more than 50 organisations ranging from the Countryside Alliance to Unison signed an open letter demanding the withdrawal of the Bill. They warn that the measures are heavy-handed and ill-considered, and will lead to loss of confidence in e-commerce, unacceptable costs to business and to the British economy, confusion and uncertainty at numerous levels of business activity, and an onerous imposition on the rights of individuals. The Bill permits surveillance of the internet "for the purpose of assessing or collecting any tax, duty, levy or other imposition, contribution or charge payable to a government department". Would the authorities ever use these powers? On the basis of the past record of the Inland Revenue, it is likely that they will. It was recently revealed that they have approached supermarkets to obtain loyalty card files. They say the information is useful to determine whether a person's spending pattern matches the way of life implied by his tax return. Consider, also, the requirement in the Bill for computer users and companies to hand over on demand their "decryption" keys to the Government. It sounds mundane, but this simple requirement in the legislation is likely to drive businesses off-shore. Encryption (the mathematics of scrambling data so it is unintelligible to business rivals) sits at the heart of the functioning of modern business, and it forms the core of the trust in the e-commerce and banking industries. Enter government, with its size 12 boots, demanding that businesses hand over these priceless items. Bemused investors and venture capital leaders have warned that the requirement compromises the core security of business. And that means investment in new British projects in e-commerce will fall off sharply. Sensing a potential economic disaster, the British Chambers of Commerce recently commissioned some academic colleagues and me to conduct an assessment of the economic impact of the Bill. We concluded that it would create an economic Chernobyl amounting to a cost to the British economy of £46 billion over five years. Instead of causing an uproar, business groups have been quiet, choosing to pursue discreet meetings with ministers rather than dropping depth charges. The reason, perhaps, can be traced to a civil servant from the DTI, Nigel Hickson. In a scene worthy of Yes, Minister, the Government placed Hickson "on loan" to the CBI, from where he started to co-ordinate the business response to the Bill. Scary stuff. In the face of increased opposition from non-business groups, Jack Straw entered the fray. He talked up the potential for the Bill to tackle crime on the internet, and launched a spirited attack on our economic report. Mr Straw's intervention is significant. It indicates that the driving force behind the Bill is substantial, and the air of desperation within sections of government to get the legislation through has blinded the Home Office to commercial and human rights sensitivities. However, a confidential report was prepared for Carter and Sheehan, through connections, and a woman named Marcia (sorry, I did not write down the name, but intend to get more details on this story) he was given access to old microfilm files in a new wing of the National Archives which had armed guards stationed at the entrance. There he hand-cranked through the microfilm records. He stated there were two primary reports, one on the UFO phenomena, and one on extraterrestrial life. He described how, rolling through the microfilm, he encountered some clear photos showing a "flying saucer" embedded in snow and surrounded by USAF personnel wearing parkas. Flight 800 Independent Researchers Organization (FIRO) FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Springfield, Massachusetts 7/17/00 Flight 800 Independent Researchers Organization (FIRO) is acknowledging the 4th anniversary of the crash of TWA Flight 800 by filing a FOIA suit in Springfield, Mass, Federal Court. FIRO is seeking an injunction against the FBI to release accident data still being withheld from researchers. Incredibly, such data is also being withheld from other official parties to the investigation. Remarkably, the FBI even refused to share such source documents when requested at Congressional oversight hearings. FIRO is specifically seeking the FBI's forensic analytical results, which describe over 100 shrapnel-like objects, and which were never revealed to any other parties to the official investigation. Similarly, radar data seized by the FBI from the Sikorsky facility on Long Island have been withheld for 4 years. Last August, FIRO attracted national TV coverage (C-Span) to their press conference revealing previously unreleased radar data showing many unexplained vessels in the vicinity of the crash. One fast, high performance aircraft was tracked maneuvering in and out of a nearby military warning zone before, during, and after the crash. There has still been no official response or explanation as to what these 30+ mystery vessels were, and why, despite their proximity, they did not contribute any of the 755 witness reports. It is FIRO's contention that by continuing to keep such data secret and isolated from the official record, that the FBI and the NTSB are themselves undermining the credibility of their conclusions and of the overall official inquiry process. Such unnecessary secrecy creates skepticism and perpetuates allegations of a cover-up. The NTSB will formally release their report on the accident in August with a conclusion based upon a hypothetical and spontaneous spark in the center fuel tank. To date, no physical evidence has been found to support the "spark" theory. After years of delay the NTSB has finally released the FBI's redacted eyewitness reports. These revealed that there were actually 755 witness reports despite FBI Asnt Director James Kallstrom's sworn testimony to a Congressional Hearing in 1997 that misrepresented the total number as "over 200 witnesses". The Witness data and a summary can finally be viewed at: www.twa800.com The recent official TWA report to be included in the final NTSB report notes wryly that "These observations did not comport with the (upward) trajectory as depicted in the CIA videotape". Unfortunately the whole direction of the NTSB's investigation and conclusions are totally compromised by this perception: that the CIA's and the FBI's analyses lack credibility even among official parties to the investigation. SR: The first question that I have is that people have the impression that the CIA is a Big Omnipresent Government Agency with its hand in everything. How true is this belief? PA: I think that's relatively untrue and it depends what period of history you are talking about. During the 1960's President Johnson was obsessed with the idea that there was a foreign hand behind the anti-war movement and he told the FBI to find that hand. The FBI did the investigation and they couldn't find it and they told Johnson that and he hit the roof, he said there is a foreign hand in there. So he told the CIA in 1967 "I want you to find the foreign hand." And, so the CIA begin a whole series of illegal operations inside the United States because they are, by law, barred from an internal security function. But they searched high and low abroad and in the United States and they went back to Johnson and told him "No, we can't find the foreign hand; and there is no foreign hand as far as we're concerned of any significance." By that time Johnson's presidency was destroyed by the Vietnam War and in came Richard Nixon in 1969. Nixon too was obsessed with finding the foreign hand behind the anti-war movement. He had the CIA continue these illegal operations that they were doing and had the FBI also continue a whole series of operations that were illegal against the anti-war movement and against various groups particularly the Black Panthers. The FBI continued to tell Nixon that there was no foreign hand the CIA did the same. So Nixon came up with what was known as the Houston Plan, after Tom Houston who was an assistant council to the President, and this was a whole series of illegal operations to intensify this search for the foreign hand and at the same time to neutralize the opposition to Nixon's policies in Vietnam. He was paranoid, as everyone knows, he was so paranoid that he even bugged himself. But, it never turned up, the foreign hand, because there was no foreign hand to turn up. The CIA was collecting files on thousands of people at that time inside this country. But that was an unusual period, even though they had been reviewing mail, going out to the Soviet Union and other communist countries and other places for some 20 years from 1952 to 1972, I don't think that you can say that the CIA hand is everywhere. Or ever was everywhere in the United States. It has a definite role and it carries out this role mainly, almost exclusively, abroad. Whereas the FBI is the Agency charged with internal security, and wherever a group arose, and whenever a group arose that the FBI considered to be a threat to the stability, a potential threat to the stability, of the United States, and this goes on into the 1930's; they would initiate what they call counterintelligence programs or COINTELLPROS for short. These operations went on into the 1970's and they only became known after unknown persons stole several thousand pages from the FBI offices in Pennsylvania and this eventually came out in the press. And then the whole COINTELPRO program became known and Hoover stopped it as such. But, there can be know doubt that this continued on into the 1980's in the operations against the solidarity movement with El Salvador and Nicaragua because there have been exposes on those operations. So, the way to look at this is that the FBI and the CIA are organized to sustain and promote stability. The CIA outside the United States the FBI inside the United States. And this means secret operations against all those groups that are potentially destabalizing factors. And so its a matter of looking at the groups that exist and assuming that they are going to be targets and that there is where the attention will fall. But not over the general population as such. SR: How much of what the American public hears through the mass media about foreign relations is true? Do we practice what we preach? PA: We certainly don't practice what we preach. That is we don't practice what we preach within the United States and much less abroad in my long experience in this area. But, the media can be very deceptive. The problem is not that so many lies are printed, there are plenty of those though, but the worst part of it is the censorship, the self censorship, that

Readers curious about the commissar-like mentality of the liberal media community could do worse than read Harry Stein's new book How I Accidentally Joined the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy and Found Inner Peace. Stein was a columnist for several of the liberal magazines (so-called) that shape our national tastes. Having fathered a child, Stein decided to take a look at the child-care issue about the time Dan Quayle was being pilloried for suggesting that two parents might help a youngster to get a good start in life. Without thinking too hard about the implications of what he was doing indeed without realizing that there were any Stein wrote a piece that raised some mild questions about whether institutional childcare was all that it was cracked up to be. The next thing he knew, an old friend was accosting him at a dinner party with Since when did you become a fascist? Bang, buddy, you're dead. It is appropriate that Jeff Jacoby should be made an unperson by his leftwing bosses at The Globe over a column written as a tribute to the Americans who wrote the Constitution and paid a dear personal price for their gift to the rest of us of a nation conceived in liberty. In a September 1997 column, syndicated columnist Charles Reese wrote: "The U.S. refugee program has become a racket. The Refugee Act of 1980 needs to be repealed, especially the 1989 Lautenberg Amendment." That amendment, named after its chief sponsor, Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), was introduced with the intention of helping Soviet Jews. All they needed to prove was that they were Jewish and had, at some time or other, lived in the now-defunct USSR. That was accepted as prima facie evidence that they were the victims of specific discrimination and therefore eligible for refugee status--and all the goodies that go with it. Reese wrote, "Ordinary immigrants must work or live off the largesse of their sponsors; refugees qualify for a ton of public benefits the day they set foot on U.S. soil." Russian Jews were also being looked out for under cover of the so-called Freedom from Religious Persecution Act in 1997. In an article entitled "Persecution Complex," in the 11/10 National Review, Don Barnett wrote: "The stated goal of the Freedom from Religious Persecution Act, sponsored by Rep. Frank Wolf (RVA) and Sen. Arlen Specter (RPA), is to help eradicate religious persecution around the world--a laudable goal, but one the bill is unlikely to achieve. It imposes economic sanctions on persecuting countries, but, except for the specific case of Sudan, those sanctions are weak, and can be waived at any time by the President. Meanwhile, the bill contains refugee and asylum provisions that could have a significant effect--not toward the bill's stated purpose of mitigating religious persecution, but rather in terms of leading to substantial increases in the numbers immigrating to the United States as refugees and asylum-seekers." According to the Federation for American Immigration Reform (F.A.I.R.), U.S. Immigration laws allow 50,000 Soviet Jews (1/3 of all refugees) to come to the United States each year; this came about as a result of the 1989 Lautenberg Amendment to The Refugee Act of 1980. Efforts to raise refugee admissions by as much as 40 per cent in 1998 had the backing of Sen. Spencer Abraham (R,MI), chairman of the Senate Immigration Subcommittee. As a result, "Russian expatriates are using Israel as a base for international money laundering and trying to infiltrate or influence Israeli economic, political, and security establishments." One of the most notorious gangsters to seek refuge in Israel is Grigori Loutchansky, the KGB-trained Latvian who heads Nordex, the Vienna-based KGB front that specializes in arms and drug smuggling, as well as money laundering. Wanted by nearly every national law enforcement and intelligence agency in the Western world, Loutchansky was able to finagle a facetoface meeting with Bill Clinton, after which Mr. Clinton commissioned the gangster as an intermediary in nuclear diplomacy with Ukraine. This happened at a time when Loutchansky's firm was implicated in a scheme to smuggle nuclear materials to North Korea. Loutchansky went on the lam in 1995, and failing to find any other country that would take him, he claimed a "RIGHT OF RETURN" to Israel based on his Jewish ancestry. The new book One Point Safe, by Andrew and Leslie Cockburn, reports that "the Israeli police duly noted how skies over the eastern Mediterranean darkened with charter jets in February 1995, carrying such leading lights of the Moscow underworld as Iosif Kobzon (described by the CIA as the "Tsar and kingpin" of the Russian Mafia) as they flew in for Loutchansky's lavish fiftieth birthday celebrations in the resort town of Eilat." According to the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, by the end of the 1998 election cycle, New Jersey senator Frank Lautenberg had accepted a career total of $419,806 from the pro-Israel PACs. They are holding internal summits and meeting with Italian Mafia and Colombian drug cartel leaders, buying luxury condos and running scams, according to a dozen FBI, DEA and local officials and private moneylaundering experts interviewed by The Herald. ``What elevates Miami to the top of Russian organized crime in the U.S. is the access to banks in the Caribbean and drugs in Latin America,'' said Hardrick Crawford Jr., head of the FBI's organized crime branch in Miami. Some clear evidence of the Russian mob's presence here: + Sergei Aksyonov, reputed head of Russia's secondlargest and most violent gang ``No. 2 with a bullet,'' one FBI official joked recently bought several luxury condos on north Collins Avenue through two relatives. + Anzor Kikalischvili, a Russian businessman denied a U.S. entry visa last year for alleged ties to crime gangs, bragged in a 1996 FBI wiretap that he had 600 employees in Miami alone. + Four of Russia's highestranking mobsters met in Miami in 1993 to decide how their gangs would split up the governmentowned hotels and factories that were privatized that year, law enforcement officers who watched them say. "There are definitely a lot of major league players here ... who want that Miami Vice lifestyle," said Bob Levinson, who retired recently as the FBI's top expert in Miami on Russian mobsters. Bosses and underlings Law enforcement agents in Miami say they have grown used to seeing lots of young Russian men in luxury beach hotels, a few of them apparently bosses who bring bodyguards and even satellite phones. But most appear to be foot soldiers, athletic young men who sport the homemade tattoos that denote prison experience and the track suits that are the virtual uniforms of lowlevel Russian hoodlums. ``They are on allexpensespaid vacation, perhaps rewards for a whacking [killing] well done,'' said Kenneth Rijock, a Miamibased law enforcement consultant on financial crimes. The Russians' arrival in South Florida has clearly worried law enforcement agencies. The FBI's Miami office created a 13person ``RussiaEurasia'' squad last July after a threatassessment study put Russian organized crime in fourth place behind Colombians, La Cosa Nostra and ``other Caribbeans'' and ahead of the Sicilian mob. The FBI has Russia squads in only five other U.S. cities. Task forces watches mob That squad is in addition to Odessa, a joint task force of Miamiarea U.S. and local law enforcement agencies, financed with federal funds, that began monitoring the Russian mob in South Florida around 1993. Odessa has scored some victories, most notably last year's arrest of Ludwig Fainberg, Ukrainianborn owner of the Porky's strip club in Hialeah, and 20 others on drug, weapons, counterfeit money, prostitution and stolen liquor charges. But both the FBI and Odessa face an uphill battle against mobsters who are extremely clannish, have rogue KGB veterans advising them on security precautions, and speak a relatively uncommon language. That effort took a big step forward on Wednesday when the European Parliament appointed a 36-member committee that will spend a year investigating Echelon and plans to hold public hearings this fall. Critics hope the hearings won't be as limited in scope as were the U.S. House Intelligence Committee hearings earlier this year. "It's a major step forward," said Barry Steinhardt, associate director of the New York office of the American Civil Liberties Union, which maintains the echelonwatch.org website. "We've gone past the point where Echelon is X Files material and can be dismissed as paranoia. "It's been the intercession of the European Parliament that has forced the issue out into the open and forced the United States government to admit that Echelon exists and to begin to publicly account for their actions." U.S. Representative Bob Barr (R-Georgia), an outspoken critic of U.S. intelligence, welcomed the European effort, and said he hopes it will help raise awareness about how ordinary citizens' privacy is also at stake. "My goal in examining our intelligence surveillance activities continues to be protecting the privacy of American citizens," Barr said in a statement released through a spokesman. "While European nations are primarily concerned with protecting their commercial interests, I welcome any inquiry that helps further the debate about how intelligence activities should be conducted. The European Parliament action came one day after French prosecutor Jean-Pierre Dintilhac ordered the French counter-intelligence agency, DST, to investigate whether the purported global surveillance system violated the rights of French citizens. Two weeks ago, a Dutch parliamentary committee announced it planned to hold hearings on Echelon as well. The system can allegedly intercept email, faxes, and phone conversations. As the ACLU site says: "Echelon is perhaps the most powerful intelligence gathering organization in the world. Several credible reports suggest that this global electronic communications surveillance system presents an extreme threat to the privacy of people all over the world. According to these reports, Echelon attempts to capture staggering volumes of satellite, microwave, cellular, and fiber-optic traffic, including communications to and from North America. This vast quantity of voice and data communications are then processed through sophisticated filtering technologies. This massive surveillance system apparently operates with little oversight." The Echelon system, discussed for years in shadowy, speculative terms, became a major topic in Europe when British analyst Duncan Campbell prepared a detailed report on Echelon for the European Parliament and delivered it last year. Among the more controversial aspects of his findings was the contention that the U.S. government -- along with the U.K., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand -- used its worldwide array of satellite-dish listening devices to conduct industrial espionage. Carlos Coelho, the Portuguese Christian Democrat likely to be selected to head the European Parliament committee on Thursday, said that part of the work of investigating Echelon will be to quash some of the wider speculation on the system. He also said the committee would endeavor to glean more information about exactly what spying takes place and how it might be subjected to checks and balances. "Some things were published that were not true, that are not technically possible," Coelho said in a phone interview. "But there are others we have to look into and find out if this can happen and in what way. We have to protect our citizens and our enterprises. That's our duty." Coelho was at pains to assure Americans that the committee's expected year-long investigation springs from a groundswell of public concern in Europe. Since Campbell delivered his report on Echelon to the European Parliament last fall, he said, the topic of alleged U.S. spying on European businesses has been thrashed around in public at length. "There was a huge debate in the countries of the European Union," he said. "Everybody is very worried that this system can work without being under the law, without being under judicial mandates, and it can be a kind of attack on privacy. They are worried that there are European enterprises in the situation of having unfair chances because of this system.

SR: The first question that I have is that people have the impression that the CIA is a Big Omnipresent Government Agency with its hand in everything. How true is this belief? PA: I think that's relatively untrue and it depends what period of history you are talking about. During the 1960's President Johnson was obsessed with the idea that there was a foreign hand behind the anti-war movement and he told the FBI to find that hand. The FBI did the investigation and they couldn't find it and they told Johnson that and he hit the roof, he said there is a foreign hand in there. So he told the CIA in 1967 "I want you to find the foreign hand." And, so the CIA begin a whole series of illegal operations inside the United States because they are, by law, barred from an internal security function. But they searched high and low abroad and in the United States and they went back to Johnson and told him "No, we can't find the foreign hand; and there is no foreign hand as far as we're concerned of any significance." By that time Johnson's presidency was destroyed by the Vietnam War and in came Richard Nixon in 1969. Nixon too was obsessed with finding the foreign hand behind the anti-war movement. He had the CIA continue these illegal operations that they were doing and had the FBI also continue a whole series of operations that were illegal against the anti-war movement and against various groups particularly the Black Panthers. The FBI continued to tell Nixon that there was no foreign hand the CIA did the same. So Nixon came up with what was known as the Houston Plan, after Tom Houston who was an assistant council to the President, and this was a whole series of illegal operations to intensify this search for the foreign hand and at the same time to neutralize the opposition to Nixon's policies in Vietnam. He was paranoid, as everyone knows, he was so paranoid that he even bugged himself. But, it never turned up, the foreign hand, because there was no foreign hand to turn up. The CIA was collecting files on thousands of people at that time inside this country. But that was an unusual period, even though they had been reviewing mail, going out to the Soviet Union and other communist countries and other places for some 20 years from 1952 to 1972, I don't think that you can say that the CIA hand is everywhere. Or ever was everywhere in the United States. It has a definite role and it carries out this role mainly, almost exclusively, abroad. Whereas the FBI is the Agency charged with internal security, and wherever a group arose, and whenever a group arose that the FBI considered to be a threat to the stability, a potential threat to the stability, of the United States, and this goes on into the 1930's; they would initiate what they call counterintelligence programs or COINTELLPROS for short. These operations went on into the 1970's and they only became known after unknown persons stole several thousand pages from the FBI offices in Pennsylvania and this eventually came out in the press. And then the whole COINTELPRO program became known and Hoover stopped it as such. But, there can be know doubt that this continued on into the 1980's in the operations against the solidarity movement with El Salvador and Nicaragua because there have been exposes on those operations. So, the way to look at this is that the FBI and the CIA are organized to sustain and promote stability. The CIA outside the United States the FBI inside the United States. And this means secret operations against all those groups that are potentially destabalizing factors. And so its a matter of looking at the groups that exist and assuming that they are going to be targets and that there is where the attention will fall. But not over the general population as such. The emissary was a general who usually isn't in uniform: Maj. Gen. Yaakov "Mendy" Orr, government coordinator in the territories, who is on Barak's staff at the Camp David summit. His mission: to find out where the chief rabbis stand - and what they'll say to the public - about the religious issues at stake in the negotiations. Orr went back to Barak after two hours with partial success. On one issue, at least, the rabbis will stand by Barak. But that issue, no matter how important, is secondary to the much more critical issue: the Temple Mount. Lau and Bakshi-Doron told Orr - and through him, Barak - that they would not oppose transfer of control over Rachel's Tomb, Joseph's Tomb and even the Tomb of the Patriarchs, to the Palestinians, as long as appropriate measures were taken to guarantee access, prayer rights and security for Jews at the sites. Neither the halakha nor tradition, they said, requires Jewish sovereignty over graves, including the graves of the religious pantheon. Jews have always given in to the geography that gives others sovereignty over the final resting spots of Jews, from Moses on Mount Nevo in Jordan, to Rabbi Nahman of Breslau in Uman in Ukraine. There is always the matter of the ownership of the property, but it too is a matter that is derived from sovereignty. This is substantial support for the expected IDF withdrawal from the remaining territories in Hebron, Bethlehem and Nablus in an agreement with the Palestinians. But it does not solve the Temple Mount issue. The preliminary staff work before the departure for Camp David was based on the assumption that the Israeli public would agree to hand over Arab neighborhoods in East Jerusalem outside the Old City to Palestinian jurisdiction. Israeli Jerusalem in July 2000 is eight times the size of Jerusalem on June 5, 1967. In exchange for transferring the Arab neighborhoods to Palestine, within the context of an umbrella municipality, Israel will not only finally win international recognition of its capital, but Israeli Jerusalemites will enjoy a deep cut in their city taxes. However, there is no easy solution for the Temple Mount issue. The chief rabbis agree that the halakha forbids any Jew from going onto the Mount until the conditions are right (the reconstruction of the Temple, with the arrival of the messiah), but they do not believe that Jewish sovereignty over the Mount can be relinquished. The Palestinians, through the waqf, would never dare to relinquish the claims to the Mount that they hold on behalf of the Arab world and Islam. It's a religious problem more than a political one. And that's where a formula might be found for a tripartite, Jewish-Muslim-Christian administration that would preserve the status quo - but that's a formula that still needs a rhetorical juggle that would win approval not only from the Israelis and Palestinians but from authorities far from the Holy Land. Bush and his senior advisors have made it clear that Colin Powell is going to be their choice for Secretary of State and Powell has signaled that he just might accept. There is even some talk of Dubya announcing his Cabinet picks during the Democratic national convention: if Powell is among the designees then this is sure to steal the spotlight at a crucial moment. Not only that, but it is virtually certain to provoke hosannas from Republicans of the "responsible" right as well as the moderate, Ripon-ish center: for Powell-mania transcends political categories and ideologies. It doesn't matter that Powell supports a whole panoply of proposals that are anathema to conservative Republicans. The General is virtually immune to all criticism from Republicans, even though he favors affirmative action, as he stated clearly in his speech to the 1996 Republican convention, and is so mired in black victimology that when a predominantly black jury let off O. J. Simpson, Powell was quick to come to the jury's defense: "People will try to suggest that because there were nine blacks on the jury, it was a racial judgment. I think that's unfair. These are people who can understand the facts put before them." A FREE PASS Many blacks, in openly celebrating Simpson's acquittal, were quick to state the real rationale behind the verdict: that, as several put it in news interviews, "it's payback time." In other words, if we think of Nicole Brown Simpson as a human sacrifice to the god of black victimology made in payment for the injuries inflicted on blacks by racist whites then her murder was justified. The jurors understood the "the facts" and ignored them. Powell's defense of their verdict was outrageous, and if such a ridiculous explanation had come out of the mouth of, say, Louis Farrakhan or Lenora Fulani, it would have been roundly condemned. But the revered Powell gets a free pass, where others are held accountable: the man is an icon, widely seen as living evidence that we can, after all, live in a multi-cultural society. Or, as Bruce Llewellyn, Powell's business partner and cousin, puts it: "Have you ever heard [Powell's] speeches? He gives a great speech. He gets all of them white people coming up off the chairs, clapping and feeling good about themselves. He talks about America, the great land of opportunity, and how a poor West Indian kid with Jamaican parents and living in the south Bronx can work his way to be the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. . . . . They all love this shit. They all love the idea that "Gee, we weren't prejudiced.' . . . White people love to believe they're fair. One of the things that upsets the living shit out of them is when you confront them with the fact that they are really a bunch of racist, no-good motherfuckers." [Cited in Henry Louis Gates, "Powell and the Black Elite," The New Yorker, September 25, 1995; p. 70.] THE BANDWAGON THAT WENT OFF THE ROAD The great wave of Powell-mania that swept the country in 1996 included all too many conservatives who didn't care that their candidate's views were considerably to left on many key issues the sight of Bill Kristol and Arianna Huffington jumping on the Powell-for-President bandwagon presaged the later defection of these two intellectual lightweights to the McCainiac camp and the wacko Left respectively. Still, many veteran conservative leaders, such as Phyllis Schlafly, Paul Weyrich, and others declared their opposition. This year, with the Republican hard right taking a back seat to the party's moderate- to-liberal wing, putting Powell on the ticket, albeit in a secondary spot, would have been provocative, to say the least. So it's the Secretary of State's office, and not the White House or the Vice-Presidential Residence, for Powell where his views on affirmative action won't rub conservatives the wrong way. But what kind of a Secretary of State would he make? What are his foreign policy views? In light of Bush's pre-election appointment, such questions need to be asked. The inspiring saga of the Powell Myth, the General's by-his- bootstraps bio, is a personal narrative with little relevance to the qualifications for the Secretary's job. What are his qualifications, anyway, aside from his immense popularity and his usefulness in giving the GOP a (completely phony) multicultural gloss? A ROCKEFELLER REPUBLICAN What really scared the Republican right, back in 1996, when it looked as if Powell might run for and take the White House, was his self-designation as a "Rockefeller Republican." In August 1992 President Bush, about to go into a general election against Bill Clinton, invited Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin of Israel for a visit at Kennebunkport. When it was over Mr. Bush rushed back to Washington and called in the editors of some American Jewish newspapers, of which I was one. Mr. Bush was asked whether he had given any thought to making free-market economic reform in Israel a higher priority than the peace process. "I'd have to cop out on that," he replied. Now there is a view in the Jewish community that what Camp David II is really about is payback. The Palestinian Arab leadership is openly viewing the negotiations as but one stage in a long war to annihilate the Jewish state, and those most in need of a deal at Camp David are Mr. Clinton, Vice President Al Gore, and Senate candidate Hillary Clinton. Dr. Vittorio Porciatti of the Institute of Neurophysiology in Pisa and colleagues say that a mechanism in the brain that controls the reaction to visual information ``is defective or absent in'' people with photosensitive epilepsy. It has been known for many years that strobe lights or flashing lights may cause seizures in people with this type of epilepsy, but it was unclear how the lights induced this response. In an attempt to understand that process, Porciatti and colleagues exposed eleven patients with photosensitive epilepsy to different patterns of flashing lights and studied the brainwaves of these patients in response to the lights. Compared with people who did not have the disorder, photosensitive epileptics had abnormal brain activity in response to slow-flashing lights with high contrast. (AP) -- Four years after a Scientologist died while being treated by church members following a traffic accident, a medical examiner ruled the woman's death was accidental. The decision by Pasco-Pinellas Medical Examiner Joan Wood to change the cause of Lisa McPherson's death from "undetermined" could have a major impact on the state's prosecution of the Clearwater-based church. Prosecutors have charged the church with practicing medicine without a license and abusing a disabled adult for its treatment of McPherson. Now, prosecutors have to decide whether to drop, amend or pursue the charges. "We need to review (Wood's decision)," said Assistant State Doug Crow said Wednesday. "I wouldn't want to speculate about what effect it may have." Church attorney Sandy Weinberg predicted that if prosecutors do not dismiss the charges, a judge will. Wood, who was unavailable for comment, filed the amended autopsy Friday after reviewing new medical evidence and test results, most of them provided by church-hired experts, said her attorney, Jeff Goodis. Wood originally said McPherson died of a blood clot in her lungs caused by bed rest and severe dehydration, but the new report drops the references to bed rest and dehydration and lists psychosis and the auto accident as contributing factors. McPherson, 36, died in December 1995, 17 days after being involved in a minor traffic accident. She took off her clothes and began walking down the street. Police took her to a hospital, but she left with Scientology officials, who wanted her to avoid psychiatric treatment, which is against church teachings. Prosecutors say she was given unprescribed medicine and forcibly restrained by church officials. McPherson eventually was taken to a hospital, but was pronounced dead. Church officials have denied the charges. The Church of Scientology, based in Los Angeles, was founded in 1954 by the late science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard. (AP) -- Members of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux tribe filed out of tribal headquarters here, claiming their takeover of the building achieved their goals. The protesters left Wednesday after the tribal council agreed to suspend the panel that governs the tribe's casinos. The demonstrators had barricaded themselves in the council chambers Tuesday afternoon, demanding an investigation of alleged tribal corruption. "This started out as a council meeting," said Paul McCabe, special agent with the FBI in Minneapolis. "When the council meeting was adjourned, some people who were in attendance there asked for the resignation of the council and the gaming board. "They adjourned the council, and then these people were joined by some armed individuals." No shots were fired, and several protesters and their supporters denied they had any weapons. Early reports indicated anywhere from eight to 15 people were inside the building. Later estimates ranged to 25. Tribal leaders have grown wealthy from casino proceeds while the tribe's poor have gotten poorer, the protesters said. "This corruption has to stop," said Smiley Shepherd, former manager of two of the tribe's casinos. "Our elders are being abused, living in snake-infested apartments while the council and (casino) executives are making high five-digit salaries." During the 90-day suspension of the seven-member panel that governs the casinos, the protesters' concerns and complaints will be studied, said Rosebud Marshall, judicial representative from the tribe's Old Agency District. In the southwestern corner of South Dakota, the Oglala Sioux tribal headquarters at Pine Ridge has been occupied by protesters since Jan. 16 in a stalemate with a faction representing the tribal treasurer, whom the occupiers accuse of mismanaging funds. AER From www.wsws.org WSWS : News Analysis : Medicine Health : BSE/CJD Renewed fears that BSE/Mad Cow Disease can pass from one generation to another By Barry Mason 12 July 2000 Back to screen version Britain's Agricultural Minister confirmed in parliament last month that a calf had been born with Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) or Mad Cow Disease. The animal was born after August 1, 1996, when extra control measures on animal feed containing mammalian meat and bone meal had been implemented, supposed to eradicate the incidence of BSE. BSE is a degenerative brain disease in cattle, first recognised in the mid- 1980s, caused by the infectious prion protein. The disease is thought to have resulted from the practice of feeding ruminant animals with the treated remains of slaughtered animals. It is responsible for the development of a new variant (vCJD) of the fatal brain-wasting disorder Creutzfeldt Jacob Disease. Despite the potentially grave dangers posed to public health by his confirmation, Agriculture Minister Nick Brown went on to claim that there is no risk to food safety as a result of this case. The newly-established Food Standards Agency (FSA) would also be issuing a statement to that effect later in the day, Brown said, adding that the FSA chairman had also stated that there was no extra risk to food safety posed by the recent case. Brown's announcement continues a long-running cover-up over BSE and its impact on the human population, dating back to the Conservative administration of Margaret Thatcher. Ever since the emergence of BSE and its human equivalent, the main issue for successive British governments has been to protect the profits of the beef industry. To this end, scientists like Professor Richard Lacey, who had warned of the dangers of eating BSE-contaminated beef and called for the destruction of England's national herd, were subjected to a campaign of vilification. BSE first became a notifiable disease in cattle in 1988 and in July of that year the ban on mammalian meat and bone meal was brought in. In 1992, nearly 37,000 cases of BSE were recorded in the UK, yet still the Conservative government denied any danger to human health. Certain limited measures were introduced which undermined this claim, including a ban on the use of specified bovine offals in the human food chain. Later, the 30-month rule was introduced, preventing the use of cattle over 30 months in human food. Even so, the regulations were ineffective and poorly enforced. The 30-month rule moreover meant that animals with the disease but not yet showing symptoms might still be entering the food chain. Only when a number of young people began to exhibit symptoms similar to those of CJD normally found in older people, and several died as a result, was it accepted that BSE had passed into the human food chain with fatal consequences. The number of fatalities has increased steadily, and to date a total of 58 mainly young people have died of the disease in the UK. The Edinburgh-based CJD surveillance unit says that another 12 cases have been identified. Many scientists have warned that the death toll might still not have peaked and that the final figure could be in the thousands. When the Labour government came to power in May 1997 they had to tackle the widespread public concern in Britain and internationally that had caused a collapse in the British beef industry. To this end, Blair convened a public inquiry into BSE under Lord Justice Phillips. The inquiry has yet to report. However, Labour had stipulated that the inquiry would only consider matters up to March 1996, when the link between BSE and vCJD was first officially recognised, and that subsequent developmentsincluding continued fears of the danger to public healthwould not be examined. The Blair government also announced the establishment of the FSAa new agency supposedly answerable to the consumer and aimed at restoring public confidence in the food industry. Brown's statement in parliament effectively exposed the FSA's role as a rubber stamp for the government and food industry. It also confirms that Labour intends to continue defending the agricultural industry at the expense of public health. The Agriculture Minister gave two possible explanations for the occurrence: either the calf had caught the disease through maternal transmission, he said, or it had been fed contaminated cattle feed. The government had extended the ban on mammalian meat and bone meal in August 1996, making it illegal to hold supplies of it on farms or in feed mills. In his statement, however, Brown also described maternal transmission as being only a theoretical possibility, despite well-documented evidence that scrapie, a prion disease found in sheep similar to BSE, can be passed from mother to offspring. If this opinion is correct, then the majority of us have been conned; that, we've been taken for a ride that has lasted 27 years. Throughout aviation history and space exploration, the prime and lasting record of our achievements has been preserved as photographic images, movie film and in recent times, television coverage. We are in no doubt that these records reflect the actual events as they occurred, disasters and triumphs included. Particularly in the exploration of space - and going to the Moon is a perfect example in which there are no independent witnesses to the actual events- we have the right to expect the record to be genuine, honestly portrayed, and responsibly reported. In actual fact, mankind has no proof at all that we ever set foot on the Moon, other than the photographs that NASA has elected to publish. In this article, David Percy, an award winning film and TV producer, 'focuses' on some of these images, formulating the kind of brief that might have been given to the first lunar surface photographers to produce such questionable images. While such matters as the alleged Moon rocks are important, if the Apollo photos are faked, then they and everything else will find its own place in this NASA jigsaw. We are now waking up to the possibility that NASA's photographic coverage of the landings on the Moon between 1969 and 1972 may not be genuine - this includes both the film and the TV broadcasts. Following detailed photographic analysis of NASA images, I have gained compelling evidence that there was indeed a falsification of the record and although NASA might seek to justify its actions, there can be no acceptable defence for such dishonesty. Those whom I call 'Whistle-Blowers' appear to have encoded the information needed to discover this sad truth. Their information is found in the photography, in the processing and in the final compositing and retouching. I have organised my discoveries under the headings of a series of photographic rules. Photo rule No 1: Light travels in straight, parallel lines at any given moment. Shadow directions are constant because the light comes from the sun over 90 million miles away. Take a look at photo 1, typical tree shadows. Notice the virtual parallel lines of shadow - and the shadow side of the trees is dark. No detail. This is not surprising. Now compare with the panoramic shot, photo 2, supposedly taken on the Moon, you can work out where the sources of light are! ... Not very far away! These shadows are not parallel. In photo 3 they converge to a point on the alleged lunar surface. This is an impossible situation in natural sunlight. Also notice that the shadow side isn't dark and the shaded side of the gold visor reflects a bright source of light. Very surprising! Daytime on the lunar surface lasts for a period of 14 'Earth' days, but in the NASA images, shadow lengths vary within the time frame (a few hours or days) of the alleged mission. Shadow lengths are at odds with the sun angles at the time of the supposed trip. For example, during 'Apollo 11' the sun was at 10 degrees above the horizon but the pictures depict 30 degrees or so! See photo 4. Is this a mistake, or a Whistle-Blower's clue? Varying shadow lengths within any given picture or TV scene imply more than one light source, sometimes positioned at different heights! Clearly, if a picture is genuine, it's not possible to have variations in shadow direction within any one picture. The shadows in photo 5 are all over the place. Again in photo 6, there are more shadow 'problems' with the rocks. Long shadows, short shadows, grey shadows, dark shadows, some filled-in, some not filled-in - real Whistle-Blowing! The TV image, photo 7, is another example of differential shadow lengths. Additionally, there is visual evidence of the use of a large, very near, ARTIFICIAL source of light. The TV image, photo 8, shows a reflection of a light source occupying approximately 25% of the convex visor. This, in my view, indicates the use of a super-light of an incredible size, positioned extremely close to the action. Photo rule No 2: Light in a vacuum is high contrast - ie. very bright on the sun side, very dark on the shadow side - and on the Moon there is no atmosphere to help fill-in or soften/lighten the shadows. For the first time, the tools used to launch such attacks have been found on computer systems using later versions of Windows. Warnings about the tools, which can be found "in the wild" on the Internet, were first posted on the Web site of the National Infrastructure Protection Center on Dec. 30. NIPC is a multi-agency unit headquartered in the FBI in Washington, and is the government's front-line defense against cyber-attacks. But those early warnings involved "distributed denial of service," or DDOS, tools that could be used to launch attacks against Solaris-run computers, not those using the more popular Windows operating system. Those earlier versions were used in this month's attacks. However, NIPC is now warning that new tools similar to the earlier "Trin00" and "Tribe Flood Network" have shown up on Windows systems. "NIPC determined that the tool was found on 16 Windows 98 machines on a university network," the agency's latest advisory says. The advisory was posted last Friday, but is still available on the unit's Web site. The FBI did not give details, but the machines are believed to be in California. "Denial of service" attacks depend on "packets" or "daemons" being implanted into "victim" computer systems, turning them into "zombies." Scores or hundreds of such "zombie" computer systems can be made to launch an attack on a target without the knowledge of their operators. The "zombie" systems essentially send a flood of requests for information to the target Web site, but provide "spoofed" or phony return e-mail addresses, locking the sites up for hours in a futile attempt to answer the requests. NIPC says before they were nullified, the 16 "infected" Windows machines were communicating with each other, without the knowledge of their operators. The unit said it has already moved to counter the new threat, sending DDOS binaries to anti-virus vendors so they can modify their software. Chidi Jr. NEW YORK (IDG) -- IBM's wearable PC could be ready for the market as early as the beginning of next year, although the company needs to work further at refining and testing the design, an IBM engineer said here Wednesday. More effort is needed to shrink and test the technology, according to Russell Budd, an engineer on the IBM project. "We need to know what the customer wants, and build it in," he said here at PC Expo. Most of the people who tried on the wearable PC at the show Wednesday seemed enthusiastic about it. The device has a high gee-whiz factor, something IBM highlights in company commercials featuring a young man sitting alone in a park full of pigeons, screaming stock orders into the wearable PC's headset. Hardware innovation The system links a head display harness to a wide, black shoulder sash with the computer processing hardware. The display device is a toothbrush-sized bar extending from the headgear like a monocle on one side of the wearer's face. It projects the image of a computer screen in front of the user's eye. The wearer can control the computer using voice commands or a mouse built like a pilot's hand-grip with the buttons mounted like triggers. The ghostly image of a Windows operating system desktop doesn't interfere significantly with a wearer's field of vision, but seeing the screen, no matter which way you turn your head, can be a little disorienting, said Darwen Perez, a computer programmer from New York, who tried out the PC at the show. "It's something you could get used to, though," he added. Field testing for the wearable computer started with airplane manufacturers and ship inspectors -- workers who need access to detailed information and their hands free at the same time, said Istvan Lovas, an optical engineer for IBM. "When the field guys were inspecting ships for damage, crawling into tight spaces, they couldn't carry a (traditional) computer with them," he said. IBM's wearable computer uses standard computer processing chips and can run Microsoft's Windows 98 operating system. The shoulder sash with the computer's processor and memory weighs about a pound or two. Although the device is comparatively light, it's still big and bulky enough to qualify as a major fashion accessory -- a fact that deterred at least one user. "I'm an older lady. FBI system covertly searches e-mail Superfast system called 'Carnivore' searches e-mails for messages from criminal suspects, thus raising legal issues, privacy concerns. By Neil King Jr. and Ted Bridis, WSJ Interactive Edition July 11, 2000 6:01 AM PT WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation is using a superfast system called Carnivore to covertly search e-mails for messages from criminal suspects. Essentially a personal computer stuffed with specialized software, Carnivore represents a new twist in the federal government's fight to sustain its snooping powers in the Internet age. But in employing the system, which can scan millions of e-mails a second, the FBI has upset privacy advocates and some in the computer industry. Experts say the system opens a thicket of unresolved legal issues and privacy concerns. The FBI developed the Internet wiretapping system at a special agency lab at Quantico, Va., and dubbed it Carnivore for its ability to get to "the meat" of what would otherwise be an enormous quantity of data. FBI technicians unveiled the system to a roomful of astonished industry specialists here two weeks ago in order to steer efforts to develop standardized ways of complying with federal wiretaps. Federal investigators say they have used Carnivore in fewer than 100 criminal cases since its launch early last year. Word of the Carnivore system has disturbed many in the Internet industry because, when deployed, it must be hooked directly into Internet service providers' computer networks. That would give the government, at least theoretically, the ability to eavesdrop on all customers' digital communications, from e-mail to online banking and Web surfing. The system also troubles some Internet service providers, who are loath to see outside software plugged into their systems. In many cases, the FBI keeps the secret Carnivore computer system in a locked cage on the provider's premises, with agents making daily visits to retrieve the data captured from the provider's network. But legal challenges to the use of Carnivore are few, and judges' rulings remain sealed because of the secretive nature of the investigations. Internet eavesdropping Internet wiretaps are conducted only under state or federal judicial order, and occur relatively infrequently. The huge majority of wiretaps continue to be the traditional telephone variety, though U.S. officials say the use of Internet eavesdropping is growing as everyone from drug dealers to potential terrorists begins to conduct business over the Web. The FBI defends Carnivore as more precise than Internet wiretap methods used in the past. The bureau says the system allows investigators to tailor an intercept operation so they can pluck only the digital traffic of one person from among the stream of millions of other messages. An earlier version, aptly code-named Omnivore, could suck in as much as to six gigabytes of data every hour, but in a less discriminating fashion. Still, critics contend that Carnivore is open to abuse. Mark Rasch, a former federal computer-crimes prosecutor, said the nature of the surveillance by Carnivore raises important privacy questions, since it analyzes part of every snippet of data traffic that flows past, if only to determine whether to record it for police. "It's the electronic equivalent of listening to everybody's phone calls to see if it's the phone call you should be monitoring," Rasch said. "You develop a tremendous amount of information." Others say the technology dramatizes how far the nation's laws are lagging behind the technological revolution. "This is a clever way to use old telephone-era statutes to meet new challenges, but clearly there is too much latitude in the current law," said Stewart Baker, a lawyer specializing in telecommunications and Internet regulatory matters. Privacy and security concerns Robert Corn-Revere, of the Hogan Hartson law firm here, represented an unidentified Internet service provider in one of the few legal fights against Carnivore. He said his client worried that the FBI would have access to all the e-mail traffic on its system, raising dire privacy and security concerns. A federal magistrate ruled against the company early this year, leaving it no option but to allow the FBI access to its system. "This is an area in desperate need of clarification from Congress," said Corn-Revere. "Once the software is applied to the ISP, there's no check on the system," said Rep. Bob Barr (R., Ga.), who sits on a House judiciary subcommittee for constitutional affairs. "If there's one word I would use to describe this, it would be 'frightening."' Marcus Thomas, chief of the FBI's Cyber Technology Section at Quantico, said Carnivore represents the bureau's effort to keep abreast of rapid changes in Internet communications while still meeting the rigid demands of federal wiretapping statutes. CHAPTER I THE ORDER OF ROSICRUCIANS AND THE ROSICRUCIAN FELLOWSHIP OUR MESSAGE AND MISSION A SANE MIND A SOFT HEART A SOUND BODY -- -- Before entering upon an explanation of the teachings of the Rosicrucians, it may be well to say a word about them and about the place they hold in the evolution of humanity. For reasons to be given later these teachings advocate the dualistic view; they hold that man is a Spirit enfolding all the powers of God as the seed enfolds the plant, and that these powers are being slowly unfolded by a series of existences in a gradually improving earthy body; also that this process of development has been performed under the guidance of exalted Beings who are yet ordering our steps, though in a decreasing measure, as we gradually acquire intellect and will. These exalted Beings, though unseen to the physical eyes, are nevertheless potent factors in all affairs of life, and give to the various groups of humanity lessons which will most efficiently promote the growth of their spiritual powers. In fact, the earth may be likened to a vast training school in which there are pupils of varying age and ability as we find it in one of our own schools. There are the savages, living and worshipping under most primitive conditions, seeing in stick or stone a God. Then, as man progresses onwards and upwards in the scale of civilization, we find a higher and higher conception of Deity, which has flowered here in our Western World in the beautiful Christian religion that now furnishes our spiritual inspiration and incentive to improve. These various religions have been given to each group of humanity by the exalted beings whom we know in the Christian religion as the Recording Angels, whose wonderful prevision enables them to view the trend of even so unstable a quantity as the human mind, and thus they are enabled to determine what steps are necessary to lead our unfoldment along the lines congruous to the highest universal good. When we study the history of the ancient nations we shall find that at about six hundred years B.C. a great spiritual wave had its inception on the Eastern shores of the Pacific Ocean where the great Confucian religion accelerated the progress of the Chinese nation, then also the religion of the Buddha commenced to win its millions of adherents in India, and still further West we have the lofty philosophy of Pythagoras. Each system was suited to the needs of the particular people to whom it was sent. Then came the period of the Skeptics, in Greece, and later, traveling westward the same spiritual wave is manifested as the Christian religion of the so-called "Dark Ages" when the dogma of a dominant church compelled belief from the whole of Western Europe. It is a law in the universe that a wave of spiritual awakening is always followed by a period of doubting materialism; each phase is necessary in order that the Spirit may receive equal development of heart and intellect without being carried too far in either direction. The great Beings aforementioned, who care for our progress, always take steps to safeguard humanity against that danger, and when they foresaw the wave of materialism which commenced in the sixteenth century with the birth of our modern science, they took steps to protect the West as they had formerly safeguarded the East against the skeptics who were held in check by the Mystery Schools. In the fourteenth century there appeared in central Europe a great spiritual teacher whose symbolical name was CHRISTIAN ROSENKREUZ or CHRISTIAN ROSE CROSS, who founded the mysterious Order of the Rosy Cross, concerning which so many speculations have been made and so little has become known to the world at large, for it is the Mystery School of the West and is open only to those who have attained the stage of spiritual unfoldment necessary to be initiated in its secrets concerning the Science of Life and Being. If we are so far developed that we are able to leave our dense physical body and take a soul flight into interplanetary space we shall find that the ultimate physical atom is spherical in shape like our earth; it is a ball. When we take a number of balls of even size and group them around one, it will take just twelve balls to hide a thirteenth within. Thus the twelve visible and the one hidden are numbers revealing a cosmic relationship and as all Mystery Orders are based upon cosmic lines, they are composed of twelve members gathered around a thirteenth who is the invisible HEAD. There are seven colors in the spectrum: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. But between the violet and the red there are still five other colors which are invisible to the physical eye but reveal themselves to the spiritual sight. CHAPTER II THE PROBLEM OF LIFE AND ITS SOLUTION THE PROBLEM OF LIFE Among all the vicissitudes of life, which vary in each individual's experience, there is one event which sooner or later comes to everyone--Death! No matter what our station in life, whether the life lived has been a laudable one or the reverse, whether great achievements have marked our path among men; whether health or sickness has been our lot, whether we have been famous and surrounded by a host of admiring friends or have wandered unknown through the years of our life, at some time there comes a moment when we stand alone before the portal of death and are forced to take the leap into the dark. The thought of this leap and of what lies beyond must inevitably force itself upon every thinking person. In the years of youth and health, when the bark of our life sails upon seas of prosperity, when all appears beautiful and bright, we may put the thought behind us, but there will surely come a time in the life of every thinking person when the problem of life and death forces itself upon his consciousness and refuses to be set aside. Neither will it help him to accept the ready-made solution of anyone else without thought and in blind belief, for this is a basic problem which every one must solve for himself or herself in order to obtain satisfaction. Upon the eastern edge of the Desert of Sahara there stands the world-famous Sphinx with its inscrutable face turned toward the East, ever greeting the Sun as its rising rays herald the newborn day. It was said in the Greek myth that it was the wont of this monster to ask a riddle of each traveler. She devoured those who could not answer, but when Oedipus solved the riddle she destroyed herself. The riddle which she asked of men was the riddle of life and death, a query which is as relevant today as ever, and which each one must answer or be devoured in the jaws of death. But when once a person has found the solution to the problem, it will appear that in reality there is no death, that what appears so, is but a change from one state of EXISTENCE to another. Thus, for the man who finds the true solution to the riddle of life, the sphinx of death has ceased to exist, and he can lift his voice in the triumphant cry, "O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?" Various theories of life have been advocated to solve this problem of life. We may divide them into two classes, namely THE MONISTIC THEORY, which holds that all the facts of life can be explained by reference to this visible world wherein we live, and THE DUALISTIC THEORY, which refers part of the phenomenon of life to another world which is now invisible to us. Raphael in his famous painting, "The School of Athens," has most aptly pictured to us the attitude of these two schools of thought. We see upon that marvelous painting a Greek Court such as those wherein philosophers were once wont to congregate. Upon the various steps which lead into the building a large number of men are engaged in deep conversation, but in the center at the top of the steps stand two figures, supposedly of Plato and Aristotle, one pointing upwards, the other towards the earth, each looking the other in the face, mutely, but with deeply concentrated will; each seeking to convince the other that his attitude is right, for each bears the conviction in his heart. One holds that he is of the earth earthy, that he has come from the dust and that thereto he will return, the other firmly advocates the position that there is a higher something which has always existed and will continue regardless of whether the body wherein it now dwells holds together or not. The question who is right is still an open one with the majority of mankind. Millions of tons of paper and printer's ink have been used in futile attempts to settle it by argument, but it will always remain open to all who have not solved the riddle themselves, for it is a basic problem, a part of the life experience of every human being to settle that question, and therefore no one can give us the solution ready-made for our acceptance. All that can be done by those who have really solved the problem, is to show to others the line along which they have found the solution, and thus direct the inquirer how he also, by his own efforts, may arrive at a conclusion. That is the aim of this little book; not to offer a solution to the problem of life to be taken blindly, on faith in the author's ability of investigation. The teachings herein set forth are those handed down by the Great Western Mystery School of the Rosicrucian Order and are the result of the concurrent testimony of a long line of trained Seers given to the author and supplemented by his own independent investigation of the realms traversed by the Spirit in its cyclic path from the invisible world to this plane of existence and back again. CHAPTER III THE VISIBLE AND THE INVISIBLE WORLDS THE CHEMICAL REGION If one who is capable of consciously using his spiritual body with the same facility that we now use our physical vehicles should glide away from the Earth into interplanetary space, the Earth and the various other planets of our solar system would appear to him or her to be composed of three kinds of matter, roughly speaking. The densest matter, which is our visible Earth, would appear to him as being the center of the ball as the yolk is in the center of an egg. Around that nucleus he or she would observe a finer grade of matter similarly disposed in relation to the central mass, as the white of the egg is disposed outside the yolk. Upon a little closer investigation he would also discover that this second kind of substance permeates the solid Earth to the very center, even as the blood percolates through the more solid parts of our flesh. Outside both of these mingling layers of matter he would observe a still finer, third layer corresponding to the shell of the egg, except that this third layer is the finest, most subtle of the three grades of matter, and that it interpenetrates both of the two inner layers. As already said, the central mass, spiritually seen, is our visible world, composed of solids, liquids, and gases. They constitute the Earth, its atmosphere, and also the ether, of which physical science speaks hypothetically as permeating the atomic substance of all chemical elements. The second layer of matter is called the Desire World and the outermost layer is called the World of Thought. A little reflection upon the subject will make clear that just such a constitution is necessary to account for facts of life as we see them. All forms in the world about us are built from chemical substances: solids, liquids, and gases, but insofar that they do move, these forms obey a separate and distinct impulse, and when this impelling energy leaves, the form becomes inert. The steam engine rotates under the impetus of an invisible gas called steam. Before steam filled its cylinder, the engine stood still, and when the impelling force is shut off its motion again ceases. The dynamo rotates under the still more subtle influence of an electric current which may also cause the click of a telegraph instrument or the ring of an electric bell, but the dynamo ceases its swift whirl and the persistent ring of the electric bell becomes mute when the invisible electricity is switched off. The forms of the bird, the animal, and the human being also cease their motion when the inner force which we call LIFE has winged its invisible way. All forms are impelled into motion by desire: the bird and the animal roam land and air in their desire to secure food and shelter, or for the purpose of breeding. Man is also moved by these desires, but has in addition other and higher incentives to spur him to effort; among them is desire for rapidity of motion which led him to construct the steam engine and other devices that move in obedience to HIS desire. If there were no iron in the mountains man could not build machines. If there were no clay in the soil, the bony structure of the skeleton would be an impossibility, and if there were no Physical World at all, with its solids, liquids, and gases, this dense body of ours could never have come into existence. Reasoning along similar lines it must be at once apparent that if there were no Desire World composed of desire-stuff, we should have no way of forming feelings, emotions, and desires. A planet composed of the materials we perceive with our PHYSICAL eyes and of no other substances, might be the home of plants which grow unconsciously, but have no desires to cause them to move. The human and animal kingdoms, however, would be impossibilities. Furthermore, there is in the world a vast number of things, from the simplest and most crude instruments, to the most intricate and cunning devices which have been constructed by the hand of man. These reveal the fact of man's thought and ingenuity. Thought must have a source as well as FORM and FEELING. We saw that it was necessary to have the requisite material in order to build a steam engine or a body and we reasoned from the fact that in order to obtain material to express desire there must also be a world composed of desire stuff. Carrying our argument to its logical conclusion, we also hold that unless a World of Thought provides a reservoir of mind stuff upon which we may draw, it would be impossible for us to think and invent the things which we see in even the lowest civilization. Thus it will be clear that the division of a planet into worlds is not based on fanciful metaphysical speculation, but is logically necessary in the economy of nature. Therefore it must be taken into consideration by any one who would study and aim to understand the inner nature of things. When we see the street cars moving along our streets, it does not

THE DESIRE WORLD When spiritual sight is developed so that it becomes possible to behold the Desire World, many wonders confront the newcomer, for conditions there are so widely different from what they are here that a description must sound quite as incredible as a fairy tale to anyone who has not himself seen them. Many cannot believe that such a world exists, and that other people can see that which is invisible to them, yet some people are blind to the beauties of this world which we see. A man who was born blind, may say to us: "I know that this world exists. I can hear, I can smell, I can taste, and above all I can feel, but when you speak of light and of color, they are non-existent to me. You say that you SEE these things. I cannot believe it for I cannot SEE myself. You say that light and color are all about me, but none of the senses at my command reveal them to me and I do not believe that the sense you call sight exists. I think you suffer from hallucinations." We might sympathize very sincerely with the poor man who is thus afflicted, but his skepticisms, reasonings, objections, and sneers notwithstanding, we would be obliged to maintain that we perceive light and color. The man or woman whose spiritual sight has been awakened is in a similar position with respect to those who do not perceive the Desire World of which he speaks. If the blind man acquires the faculty of sight by an operation, his eyes are opened and he will be compelled to assert the existence of light and color which he formerly denied, and when spiritual sight is acquired by anyone, he also perceives for himself the facts related by others. Neither is it an argument against the existence of spiritual realms that seers are at variance in their descriptions of conditions in the invisible world. We need but to look into books on travel and compare stories brought home by explorers of China, India, or Africa; we shall find them differing widely and often contradictory, because each traveler saw things from his own standpoint, under other conditions than those met by his brother authors. We maintain that the man who has read most widely these varying tales concerning a certain country AND WRESTLED WITH THE CONTRADICTIONS OF NARRATORS, will have a more comprehensive idea of the country or people of whom he has read, than the man who has read only one story assented to by all the authors. Similarly, the varying stories of visitors to the Desire World are of value, because giving a fuller view, and more rounded, than if all had seen things from the same angle. In this world matter and force are widely different. The chief characteristic of matter here is INERTIA: the tendency to remain at rest until acted upon by a force which sets it in motion. In the Desire World, on the contrary, force and matter are almost indistinguishable one from the other. We might almost describe desire-stuff as force-matter, for it is in incessant motion, responsive to the slightest FEELING of a vast multitude of beings which populate this wonderful world in nature. We often speak of the "teeming millions" of China and India, even of our vast cities, London, New York, Paris, or Chicago; we consider them overcrowded in the extreme, yet even the densest population of any spot on Earth is sparsely inhabited compared with the crowded conditions of the Desire World. No inconvenience is felt by any of the denizens of that realm, however, for, while in this world two things cannot occupy the same space at the same time, it is different there. A number of people and things may exist IN THE SAME PLACE AT THE SAME TIME and be engaged in most diverse activities, regardless of what others are doing, such is the wonderful elasticity of desire-stuff. As an illustration we may mention a case where the writer, while attending a religious service, plainly perceived at the altar certain beings interested in furthering that service and working to achieve that end. At the same time there drifted through the room and the altar, a table at which four persons were engaged in playing cards. They were as oblivious to the existence of the beings engaged in furthering our religious service, as though these did not exist. The Desire World is the abode of those who have died, for some time subsequent to that event, and we may mention in the above connection that the so-called "dead" very often stay for a long while among their still living friends. Unseen by their relatives they go about the familiar rooms. At first they are often unaware of the condition mentioned: THAT TWO PERSONS MAY BE IN THE SAME PLACE AT THE SAME TIME, and when they seat themselves in a chair or at the table, a living relative may take the supposedly vacant seat. The man we mistakenly call dead will at first hurry out of his seat to escape being sat upon, but he soon learns that being sat upon does not hurt him in his altered condition, and that he may remain in his chair regardless of the

I've never had any doubt that JFKjr flew beyond his capabilities and so caused his own death, so I'm not surprised by the NTSB conclusion. But reading all (or a lot) of their material leads me to believe that they sugar-coated some of the information so that JFKjr wouldn't appear to have been a complete a$$#01e. The following is taken directly from the report with my comments in brackets. PILOT INFORMATION The pilot obtained his private pilot certificate for "airplane single-engine land" in April 1998. He did not possess an instrument rating. He received a "high performance airplane" sign-off in his Cessna 182 in June 1998 and a "complex airplane" sign-off in the accident airplane in May 1999. His most recent Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) second-class medical certificate was issued on December 27, 1997, with no limitations. ["He received ... a 'complex airplane' sign-off in the accident airplane in May 1999." This means he had virtually NO PILOT-IN-COMMAND TIME IN THIS PLANE. The accident occurred on July 20. He broke his ankle in a hang gliding accident on June 1.] A copy of the pilot's logbook that covered from October 4, 1982, to November 11, 1998, was provided to the Safety Board. The pilot's most recent logbook was not located. [What they're saying here is that they really don't know much about his actual experience. Most of this is a guess. There was no flying between 9/88 and 12/97 so the logbook they have really only covers one year. Given the fact that he had only one solo hour - inferred from info below - prior to abandoning flying in 1988, those hours before 12/97 probably weren't of much value to him.} The Board used the copied logbook, records from training facilities, copies of flight instructors' logbooks, and statements from instructors and pilots to estimate the pilot's total flight experience. The pilot's estimated total flight experience, excluding simulator training, was about 310 hours, of which 55 hours were at night. The pilot's estimated experience flying without a certified flight instructor (CFI) on board was about 72 hours. [I think it pretty unusual to have only 72 hours PIC at 250 hours.] The pilot's estimated flight time in the accident airplane was about 36 hours, of which 9.4 hours were at night. Approximately 3 hours of that flight time was without a CFI on board, and about 0.8 hour of that time was flown at night, which included a night landing. [I'm not sure why the "estimated flight time" is as high as it is given that they guess that he only had three hours PIC. I wonder if they counted the last 1.5 hours as part of the three. Three hours is about what he would log for a routine round trip between CDW and MVY, but it's hard for me to believe that his first PIC time wasn't local.] In the 15 months before the accident, the pilot had flown about 35 flight legs either to or from the Essex County/Teterboro, New Jersey, area and the Martha's Vineyard/Hyannis, Massachusetts, area. The pilot flew over 17 of these legs without a CFI on board, including at least 5 at night. The pilot's last known flight in the accident airplane without a CFI on board was on May 28, 1999. [Last, or only? This is almost two months before the accident.] Pilot Training On October 4, 1982, the pilot started receiving flight instruction. Over the next 6 years, he flew with six different CFIs. During this period, the pilot logged 47 hours, consisting of 46 hours of dual instruction and 1 hour without a CFI on board. The pilot made no entries in his logbook from September 1988 to December 1997. [This is the "abandoned flying" that I made reference to above.] In December 1997, the pilot enrolled in a training program at Flight Safety International (FSI), Vero Beach, Florida, to obtain his private pilot certificate. Between December 1997 and April 1998, the pilot flew about 53 hours, of which 43 were flown with a CFI on board. The CFI who prepared the pilot for his private pilot checkride stated that the pilot had "very good" flying skills for his level of experience. [They're sort of implying a period of continuous training here. I wonder. Did JFKjr really spend four months in Vero Beach, or two weeks? I thought when I got my "Private" that the requirement was for 20 solo hours, so JFKjr's 10 or 11 strikes me as odd. The instructor's statement is not very encouraging. What is he going to say, "I signed him off because he was a Kennedy."?] On April 22, 1998, the pilot passed his private pilot flight test. The designated pilot examiner who administered the checkride stated that as part of the flight test, the pilot conducted two unusual attitude recoveries. New bankruptcy documents make the murky finances of Ken Starr's key witness look even shadier. - - - - - - - - - - - - By Bruce Shapiro July 12, 2000 | Federal bankruptcy court, stage for the quotidian tragedies of personal debt and commerce, is the last place anyone would expect to turn for a head-spinning legal yarn, and even less for the verdict on a national political scandal. But sometime in the next few weeks, a Richmond, Va., bankruptcy court will be the stage for both, when Judge Douglas O. Tice Jr. calls the case of Kathleen Schwicker. Kathleen who? Until her recent remarriage, Kathleen Schwicker was Kathleen Willey. Almost two years ago, Willey went on "60 Minutes" to accuse President Clinton of unwanted sexual advances in the Oval Office, followed up by dark, never-confirmed tales of threats and intimidation by presidential operatives. Willey has remarried, changed her name and relocated to Ramrod Key, Fla. Now her bankruptcy appears to be one more effort at a new start, at leaving behind an overwrought period of life beginning with her husband Ed Willey's 1993 suicide and culminating in her 1998 grand jury testimony for Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr. But coming the same week that former Starr spokesman Charles Bakaly faces contempt-of-court charges, Willey's bankruptcy case raises more questions about the probity of Starr's investigation. The facts revealed in Willey's bankruptcy filing and other documents obtained by Salon also raise questions about her past and character, and Starr's decision to grant her sweeping immunity as a central strategy in his inquiry. Willey claims she is virtually destitute. Her bankruptcy petition, filed in April, declares she has just $50 in her checking account, $2,000 worth of jewelry and $3,700 worth of household furniture. Her Subaru Outback, worth $13,000, has been claimed by her lawyers as collateral for unpaid bills. In fact, Willey is far from destitute. She has been living in comfort in a suburban home, on a budget of thousands of dollars a month. Court records and other documents obtained by Salon suggest that in 1997 and 1998, at the very time she was going public with her accusations of genital groping by President Clinton several years before, Willey was at the center of a complicated series of asset transfers that appear to have been designed to insulate her money and property from the scrutiny of courts and creditors -- and claiming under oath in Virginia that she could not remember basic personal matters from just weeks earlier. It is a noteworthy tale of legal intrigue: In declaring bankruptcy, Willey claimed personal debts of over $700,000. But financial records suggest that at least two-thirds of that "debt" consists of Willey's own assets, shifted on paper to her children while she has continued to reap the benefits. At the heart of this complicated financial maneuver, records suggest, is the manipulation of a $160,000 loan to create the appearance of a debt. The road to Tuesday's bankruptcy hearing goes back to 1991 -- long before Kathleen Willey emerged as a White House volunteer with a tale to tell. It begins not with a presidential grope but with financial transactions by her now-deceased husband, Ed Willey Jr. To understand Willey's predicament, it helps to understand her husband. Ed Willey Jr. was a Richmond attorney and investor in local real estate deals. He was the son of the speaker of Virginia's Assembly -- and so in theory, born to the state's political aristocracy. In fact he was the Willey clan's black sheep. Sometime around 1970 -- according to Kathleen Willey's own account in her application for a volunteer position at the White House -- Ed Jr. was charged with manslaughter in an auto accident, though the charges were later dropped. His taste for fast money further alienated Willey from his father. When Ed Jr. married Kathy in 1971, their joint dedication to ostentation -- the condo in Vail, the Rolex watches and jewelry -- did nothing to dispel that reputation, though many in Richmond still find it convenient to blame outsider Kathy for driving her husband's greed quotient into the stratosphere. Whatever the truth, by the early 1990s Ed Willey Jr. was beginning a long slide into debt, ultimately owing the IRS alone $325,000. In August 1991, Ed Willey turned to a longtime friend for help: Richmond developer, architect and political activist Louis Salomonsky. Salomonsky was Gov. Douglas Wilder's personal financial trustee and a successful player in local real estate projects that sometimes ended in scandal and indictments; though Salomonsky was named in at least one indictment, he was never charged himself. Salomonsky agreed to lend the Willeys $160,000, according to court transcripts and Willey financial records obtained by Salon. No, Cal Thomas didn't say that. It was Helen Thomas, dean of the White House press corps, in a rare fit of candor about a Democratic president. It's quite a damning statement, too, particularly in the context of just one scandal. Thomas has covered every president since JFK, including Nixon, so she's seen a fair piece of lying and stonewalling. But she buried the complaint in her latest book. Like others in the press corps, she never put it to President Clinton directly. Republican presidents weren't so lucky. "Reporters at every turn accused Reagan of duplicity, challenged his credibility and shattered his composure," writes Thomas, celebrating the feverish Iran-Contra coverage. The press corps even took the liberty of bundling that scandal with minor ones and associating Reagan with what it called an overall "sleaze factor." Nixon also wasn't spared. His administration was written off as "crooked." He was branded "Tricky Dick." Yet Clinton is still just "Mr. President." The national press, usually so good at calling things by their proper names -- cruelly so at times - has yet to coin any nickname for Clinton. (Paul Greenberg, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette's editorial editor, came up with "Slick Willie." But no big East Coast newsroom has rubber-stamped its use.) After eight years of rank corruption, reporters in this town are by and large still reserving judgment on Clinton. Maybe it's because they'd be judging themselves, too. Most have a personal, not just political, stake in Clinton. A whopping 89 percent of Washington reporters and 60 percent of bureau chiefs voted for him in 1992 -- compared with just 43 percent of the electorate. Surveys going back to the '60s show the press has always voted to the left of the public. But the Clinton disconnect (a gap of 46 percentage points) is the greatest of all, which makes me think the attraction is more than ideological. Maybe it's because most editors today are baby boomers and, like Clinton, smoked pot and loathed the military. Maybe it's because he's a reflection of their own morals. Or maybe they just like his cool hair. Whatever, the national press remains intoxicated by Clinton and can't seem to summon the spit to call him for what he is -- the most corrupt president in American history, and quantifiably so. That phrase, "the most corrupt president," has been bandied about so often in Republican circles that it's become a cliche. And that's allowed the press corps to dismiss it as hyperbole. It's not, and I'll prove it for any of the White House court jesters willing to stop batting their eyelashes at His Nibs for five minutes. The Clinton administration has the dubious honor of breaking the record for the most number of: *Convictions and guilty pleas *Cabinet officials under criminal investigation *Independent counsels named (Attorney General Janet Reno has had to tap more than all other attorney generals combined) *White House lawyers Claims of executive privilege *Presidential legal bills *Witnesses who fled the country or took the Fifth *Key witnesses who died unexpectedly *Illegal foreign donations accepted Now let's zero in on Clinton. Among the claims made by biographer Jerry Oppenheimer in "State of a Union: Inside the Complex Marriage of Bill and Hillary Clinton" are: * "Willard," the pet name for the presidential penis bestowed by former Clinton paramour Gennifer Flowers, was an inside joke referring to Hillary's late uncle Willard, a roly-poly loner who died while sitting on his toilet in 1965. * Bill nearly left Hillary during his first congressional race in Arkansas for a sexy campaign worker, but stayed with Hillary because he believed her superior political savvy would help him attain his ultimate goal of becoming president. * Despite present-day rumors of an icy romantic relationship, Bill and Hillary were infamous around the Yale campus for having a "hot sexual relationship." Washington Times-EDITORIAL July 12, 2000 'No underlying offense' If, as the Justice Department charges in its oddball contempt-of-court case against Charles G. Bakaly III, the former spokesman for Independent Counsel Kenneth W. Starr did confirm to a New York Times reporter that President Clinton might face indictment by the independent counsel, it's hard to summon the requisite outrage to clamor for putting the man behind bars. After all, any independent counsel worth his independence might indict a target of his investigation. No one needs Deep Throat to figure that out. Nonetheless, when the article first appeared in January, 1999, during Mr. Clinton's impeachment trial in the Senate, the White House feigned the appearance of being shocked, shocked, prompting U.S. District Judge Norma Holloway Johnson to initiate an investigation into whether Mr. Starr or his staff had violated grand jury secrecy rules. This was not the first time Judge Johnson, who oversees the grand jury, had opened a leaks inquiry. Nor was it the first time the judge would be overruled on the matter. Recall that beginning in February 1998, David Kendall, Mr. Clinton's personal lawyer, opened a daring new front in the public relations war by charging that the Office of Independent Counsel (OIC) was leaking confidential grand jury information. An appeals court ultimately judged the charges groundless, but they certainly impressed U.S. District Judge Norma Holloway Johnson, who has consistently ruled against the OIC on Mr. Kendall's leak charges. Her rulings have not exactly stood the test of time. At last count, Judge Johnson had been reined in on three separate occasions by a federal appeals court for her rather extravagant, even Kendallian readings of grand jury secrecy rules which, if allowed to stand, would outlaw most lawyer-reporter exchanges outside lunch orders. The New York Times article is a case in point. Having determined that the article contained no grand jury secrets, an appeals court panel unanimously overruled Judge Johnson in September 1999, thus preventing her from initiating contempt proceedings against Mr. Starr and the OIC staff. (Even the Justice Department, appointed by Judge Johnson as prosecutor against the OIC, agreed there had been no violation of grand jury secrecy rules.) So how is it that Mr. Bakaly now stands trial for charges stemming from the same article? The answer verges on the Kakfaesque. Mr. Bakaly stands accused, not of leaking grand jury secrets, but rather of falsely denying that he gave what the Justice Department calls "nonpublic information" to a reporter presumably concerning the possible indictment of Mr. Clinton. His lawyers contend that he was simply confirming "a truism." In their pretrial brief, they also argue that the three sworn statements in question were edited and amended against Mr. Bakaly's wishes by OIC prosecutors to reveal as little as possible to Mr. Clinton's lawyers, even to the point of suggesting that Mr. Bakaly had provided no information whatsoever to the reporter not even a truism. Does the phrase "frivolous case" begin to form in the cranial cavity? As even Julian Epstein, the Democratic counsel on the House Judiciary Committee and one of Mr. Starr's harshest critics, put it, this is a "terrible" case, a "semantical game of gotcha. There is no real underlying offense here," Mr. Epstein said this week. Ian Hopper Associated Press Writer Wednesday, July 12, 2000; 8:12 a.m. EDT WASHINGTON -- Civil liberties and privacy groups are railing against a new system designed to allow law enforcement agents to intercept and analyze huge amounts of e-mail in connection with an investigation. The system, called "Carnivore," was first hinted at on April 6 in testimony to a House subcommittee. Now the FBI has it in use. When Carnivore is placed at an Internet service provider, it scans all incoming and outgoing e-mails for messages associated with the target of a criminal probe. In a letter addressed to two members of the House subcommittee that deals with Fourth Amendment search-and-seizure issues, the American Civil Liberties Union argued that the system breaches the Internet provider's rights and the rights of all its customers by reading both sender and recipient addresses, as well as subject lines of e-mails, to decide whether to make a copy of the entire message. Further, while the system is plugged into the Internet provider's systems, it is controlled solely by the law enforcement agency. In a traditional wiretap, the tap is physically placed and maintained by the telephone company. "Carnivore is roughly equivalent to a wiretap capable of accessing the contents of the conversations of all of the phone company's customers, with the 'assurance' that the FBI will record only conversations of the specified target," read the letter. "This 'trust us, we are the government' approach is the antithesis of the procedures required under our wiretapping laws." Barry Steinhardt, associate director of the ACLU, said citizens shouldn't trust that such a sweeping data-tap will only be used against criminal suspects. And even then, he said, the data mined by Carnivore, particularly subject lines, are already intrusive. "Law enforcement should be prohibited from installing any device that allows them to intercept communications from persons other than the target," Steinhardt said in an interview. "When conducting these kinds of investigations, the information should be restricted to only addressing information." A spokeswoman for Rep. Charles T. Canady, R-Fla., who heads the House Judiciary subcommittee on the Constitution, said the congressman had no comment on the letter. In testimony to Canady's subcommittee, Robert Corn-Revere, a lawyer at the Hogan Hartson law firm in Washington, said he represented an Internet provider that refused to install the Carnivore system. The provider was placed in an "awkward position," Corn-Revere said, because the company feared suits from customers unhappy with the government looking into all the e-mail. "It was acknowledged (by the government) that Carnivore would enable remote access to the ISP's network and would be under the exclusive control of government agents," Corn-Revere said. Corn-Revere told the committee that current law is insufficient to deal with Carnivore's potential and that the Internet provider lost its court battle in part because of the Internet's connection to telephone lines, and that the law was stretched to cover the Internet as well. Corn-Revere would not reveal the name of his client, and the client lost the case. He said the FBI has been using Carnivore since early this year. James X. Dempsey, senior staff counsel at the Center for Democracy and Technology, said the main problem with Carnivore is its mystery. "The FBI is placing a black box inside the computer network of an ISP," Dempsey said. "Not even the ISP knows exactly what that gizmo is doing." But Dempsey said Internet providers contributed to the problem, by saying that current technology does not allow the Internet provider to sort out exactly what the government is entitled to get under a search warrant. The carriers complained that they had to give everything to the FBI. "The service providers said they didn't know how to comply with court orders," Dempsey said. "By taking that position, they have hurt themselves, putting themselves into a box." Marcus Thomas, who heads the FBI's cybertechnology section, told the Wall Street Journal that the bureau has about 20 Carnivore systems, which are PCs with proprietary software. He said Carnivore meets current wiretapping laws, but is designed to keep up with the Internet. "This is just a specialized sniffer," Thomas told the Journal, which first reported details about Carnivore. Encrypted e-mail, done with an e-mail encoding program like PGP, still stays in code on Carnivore, and it's up to agents to decode it. Dempsey has a possible solution to the problem, though one that's probably unlikely - show everyone what it does and how it does it, allowing Internet providers to install the software themselves. "The FBI should make this gizmo an open-source product," he said.

[Although Allan didn't mention this, anyone following the "Foster" thread(s) on Courtroom might want to post this information there as well.] Apparently the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals remanded (send back) the case to the Federal District Court with instructions that the District Court Judge view the photos in question "in camera" (judge alone) to determine which (if any) should be released under FOIA. Neither Allan nor I have read the full opinion of the 9th Circuit yet so we are not sure how "good" it is from Allan's persepctive, but at least the 9th Circuit did not agree fully with the District court's opinion. First, the OIC denied Favish's request on one ground that made no sense, viz, that release of the photos would interfere with law enforcement proceedings. It took over a year for the OIC to abandon this position. The bulk of the photos requested were already in the public domain. How higher quality photos released to Favish would interfere with law enforcement was not and has not been explained by an agency under a statutory duty to comply promptly with a freedom of information request. Second, after the OIC did release new copies of the 118 photos it had withheld without adequate explanation, it did not release them in color, nor did it release a new copy of Fos- ter's eyeglasses. The OIC has now released copies in color and a new copy of the eyeglasses photo, thanks to the order of the district court. Not appealing that order, the OIC tacitly admits that it had no legal right to withhold this material. 7943 Third, in its answer to Favish's complaint, the OIC specifi- cally referred to his request for a new copy of the photo pub- lished in Time, March 18, 1996 and on ABC-TV and stated that the OIC was "without sufficient information or knowl- edge to form a belief as to the truth of the allegations" that the photo had been published in the forms alleged. This denial was on its face implausible. How could the OIC not discover, with a modicum of diligence, whether a photo published in national news media had not come from its files? In the lengthy and incredibly detailed 17-paragraph sworn statement that names names, cites dates and details activities including a previously unknown secret database at the Commerce Department allegedly containing the names of 40,000 political donors -- Stewart reports that as head of the Commerce Department Freedom of Information Act division she personally was aware of political considerations and communications between top Commerce officials and White House lawyers to thwart or otherwise withhold responsive documents under FOIA that had been requested by Judicial Watch and other organizations, including Congress. Moreover, Stewart reports that she personally was aware of instances in which Commerce legal-counsel officials improperly overrode and withheld documents that clearly showed trade-mission seats were apportioned specifically for Clinton/Gore political supporters and donors. Stewart swore that she also was told by colleagues, subordinates and superiors that documents unlawfully were withheld under the FOIA and covered up by some officials in depositions ordered by Lamberth. She said this was done by her superiors -- who, contrary to all practice she had witnessed in her 25-year tenure at Commerce --reviewed these matters directly with White House lawyers. "I am aware of Commerce officials contacts with Cheryl Mills, then Deputy Counsel to the President, concerning whether to release or withhold certain documents," Stewart states. "I know that Ms. Mills, in her position as Deputy Counsel to the President, advised Commerce officials to withhold certain documents. In my many years working for the federal government on FOIA and other matters, and in my experience gathering and responding to FOIA and Congressional requests for information, I have never known or heard of a federal agency collaborating or discussing releasing or withholding documents with White House officials. The Commerce Departments collaboration with White House Deputy Counsel Mills on these matters was, in my experience, highly irregular and at variance with normal procedures. During the time period at issue, many of the same documents were being sought by several entities, including Judicial Watch, Inc., congressional committees, grand juries, and others. It is my belief and recollection based on my knowledge and experience that these interactions with Ms. Mills, as well as other practices, delayed and corrupted the Commerce Departments response to Judicial Watchs FOIA requests." Stewart further notes that, notwithstanding a December 1998 order by Lamberth directing Commerce to review its compliance with Judicial Watch FOIA requests, the order was ignored despite being brought directly to the attention of then-Commerce Secretary William M. Daley, who now is the top campaign official for Vice President Al Gore. "In my role as Commerce FOIA Director, I have reviewed Commerce Department documents showing that Commerce Department officials offered to contact White House official Bruce Lindsey concerning the vetting of participants, such as James Riady of the Lippo Group, in trade mission events led by late [Commerce] Secretary [Ron] Brown," Stewart states. "I have also reviewed Commerce Department documents which show that Commerce officials did coordinate with White House official Doris Matsui concerning potential participants in trade mission activities, and that Commerce Department officials considered support for the President and Democratic Party during their review." I think the conspiracy here, after driving an hour to see him speak recently, might be Newman and his "assistants" conspiring to get me (and his audiences in general) to put $ into something without his revealing any WORKABLE proof that his engine even works! The space agency said on its science web site that the Solar and Heliographic Observatory (SOHO) satellite recorded a massive solar flare, called an X-class flare, about 6:37 a.m. EDT Wednesday. Streams of electromagnetic energy erupting from the flare disrupted some radio communications, the announcement said. SOHO, a joint project of NASA and the European Space Agency, also detected two coronal mass ejections, huge clouds of electrified gas, erupting from the sun on Monday and Tuesday. The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, which predicts the effects of solar eruptions, said there was a 40 percent chance that the mass ejection would trigger a disruption of the Earth's magnetic field by Friday. This could create aurora lights reaching into the mid-lattitudes, which would include the southern U.S. Aurora lights are common in the far northern and southern latitudes. The coronal mass ejection sent a bubble of plasma, or electrified gas, toward the Earth at more than 2 million miles an hour. The first shock wave of the fast-moving mass was expected to smash into the Earth's magnetosphere, the magnetic field that surrounds the planet, on Thursday. Material from a second, more powerful ejection is expected on Friday. The aurora, or northern and southern lights, are a shimmering glow in the sky caused when energetic particles from the sun strike atoms of gas in the upper atmosphere of the Earth. The Earth's magnetic field protects the planet from these solar particles, but the field dips low over the poles. For this reason, the aurora is most commonly seen at high northern and southern latitudes. Unusually powerful solar bursts can produce the blue and green lights in the night sky closer to the equator. Experts say that the aurora is best viewed around midnight, local time. The corona mass ejection poses no health risk to people on the ground, but such solar bursts have been known to damage spacecraft and to disrupt electrical power grids. Most utility systems and satellites now are designed to resist such effects, however.
