Let Me Tell You About My Family By Chuck Baldwin December 4, 2001 Tomorrow my wife and I will help celebrate our oldest son's 25th birthday. A few weeks ago, we celebrated our daughter's 27th birthday, and shortly before that, we celebrated our youngest son's 22nd birthday. I have often said that I would rather be a successful husband and father than a successful anything else. If I accomplish nothing more in life, I consider my life to be a huge success because of the outstanding family God has given to me. Our oldest son is in the early days of owning his own plumbing business. He and his wife named their little boy after yours truly. They were both virgins when they married. They are a dedicated Christian couple serving the Lord together in our church. They do not drink, smoke, or use drugs. They have never been in trouble with the law. They love God, each other, and their parents. Our only daughter is the apple of my eye. Her husband is in the early days of owning his own engineering company. They have three children. My daughter and her husband are the youth leaders in our church. They, too, were virgins when they married and do not drink, smoke, or use drugs. They have never been in trouble with the law, and they demonstrate the highest degree of Christian dedication. Our youngest son is in his first year of law school. He is still single. Like his brother and sister, he is a faithful, dedicated Christian that has kept himself morally clean and does not use alcohol, tobacco or drugs. He loves God and our family. If it sounds like I am bragging, I am - on Jesus! I recognize that every good gift comes from above, and that includes this most precious of all gifts: a Christian home. At the same time, many people who know my family have asked me to share the principles we used in rearing our children. (It is amusing that so many child experts have never successfully raised children of their own.) I begin by saying that raising children is hard work. The responsibility of raising children cannot be passed off to a school (public or private) or to any other institution, including government. I am sorry to have to tell Hillary that it takes a mom and dad, not a village, to raise a family! Parenting must be given the priority it deserves. Parenting is not a hobby; it is a full time occupation. One cannot ignore his or her children and expect them to turn out well. Beyond that, preoccupation with materialism and greed will also ruin a child. Wallowing in moral and spiritual poverty while surrounded by material and financial prosperity is the sad story of many American families, I am afraid. It takes time and effort to instill the fundamental principles of character and conviction into our children. There is no short cut, no easy way to raise honest, considerate children. Child rearing takes love, instruction, and discipline. All three ingredients are equally important. Children must be loved. They must be taught, and they must be disciplined. I would even argue, that if children are not taught right from wrong and are not properly disciplined, they are not loved. Any parent who truly loves his or her child will be ready and able to teach and discipline them. To be sure, many parents have done everything right, and their children have still turned out wrong. I do not understand it, but I know it is true. I am also aware that there are examples of parents who did it all wrong and their kids turned out right. Only the grace and sovereignty of God can explain some things. Overall, however, we have the kind of children we raise. Arafat was present during the attack, but no one was injured, officials said. Palestinian officials fled the compound in panic. Palestinian officials said Arafat did not leave the building. The air strike came just hours after Israel's Cabinet branded Arafat's government a supporter of terrorism and singled out two organizations affiliated with the Palestinian leader as terror groups - the Tanzim militia and Force 17, a branch of the Palestinian security forces. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has declared an all-out war on terror in response to suicide bombings and shooting attacks by Islamic militants on Israelis that killed 26 and wounded nearly 200 during the weekend. Israel's reprisals were aimed at symbols of Arafat's rule. They effectively grounded the Palestinian leader and confined him to Ramallah. On Monday, Israeli missiles damaged Arafat's three helicopters parked near his seaside office in the Gaza Strip. Early Tuesday, Israeli troops tore up the landing strip at Gaza International Airport. An adviser to Sharon, speaking just before Tuesday's attack on the Arafat, said Israel was not targeting Arafat directly. We have stated publicly that we do not intend to harm him personally, said the adviser, Danny Ayalon. But since he is responsible for the wave of terrorism which has been going on, we had to hit something close to him personally. The Cabinet declaration means that Israeli officials can only meet with members of the Palestinian Authority for the purpose of obtaining a cease-fire, Ayalon said. Another adviser, Raanan Gissin, said the declaration was intended to step up pressure on Arafat to crack down hard on militants and prevent attacks on Israel, but was not an opening signal for a major assault on the Palestinian Authority. We'll use all the measures at our disposal with greater frequency, with more impunity, to put pressure on Arafat to comply, Gissin said. Ministers from the moderate Labor party left the Cabinet meeting in protest before the vote was taken. Transport Minister Ephraim Sneh hinted that Labor might quit the coalition, saying that the unity government is important to us ... but not at every price. Labor favors rehabilitating ties with Arafat. Israel's retaliation began Monday afternoon when helicopter gunships destroyed or damaged three helicopters in Gaza City. F-16 warplanes also bombed Palestinian security installations in the West Bank town of Jenin. Early Tuesday, Israeli troops tore up the landing strip of Gaza International Airport, a symbol of fledgling Palestinian sovereignty. The airport had been a vital link between the Palestinians and the rest of the world since it was opened in 1998. Bank, Gaza Updated: Tue, Dec 04 5:28 AM EST By Mohammed Assadi RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - Israel attacked Palestinian cities across the West Bank and Gaza Strip on Tuesday, hitting just beyond Yasser Arafat's main West Bank headquarters while he was inside, but he was not hurt. The multiple bombardment by Israeli warplanes and helicopter gunships was the largest simultaneous air strike at Palestinian targets since the start of a 14-month-old Palestinian uprising. Hospital officials said at least two Palestinians were killed and dozens were wounded in the Gaza Strip. Israel launched the assault in response to one of the most devastating waves of Palestinian suicide bombings inside the Jewish state in years. Palestinians accused Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon of declaring war and demanded immediate international intervention. Sharon's government is exercising terror. They're destroying the peace process and now they're destroying the Palestinian Authority. The world has to stop this Sharon madness immediately, Palestinian cabinet minister Saeb Erekat said. Israeli missiles struck targets in Gaza City and the Khan Younis refugee camp in southern Gaza, as well as in the West Bank towns of Ramallah, Tulkarm and Qalqilya, witnesses and ofifcials said. Arafat was in his Ramallah office when one missile slammed into a police building just outside the compound, Erekat said. Israel began a second day of air strikes after the government branded Arafat's Palestinian Authority a supporter of terrorism. Troops entered three Palestinian towns and took up positions close to Arafat's Ramallah office. Israel has blamed Arafat for the Palestinian suicide bombings which killed 25 people and wounded about 200. The militant Islamic group Hamas claimed responsibility for the weekend attacks. Israel mainly directed its fire at security targets or symbols of Arafat's power. The surge of violence in the past week threatens to wreck a new U.S. Middle East peace drive and has increased concern that 14 months of violence is spiralling out of control. In branding the Palestinian Authority a terror-supporting entity, the Israeli government paved the way to harsher retaliation against Arafat, although it announced no plans to topple the Palestinian president. Palestinian Authority officials have denied supporting terror during their uprising during which at least 743 Palestinians and 222 Israelis have been killed. HAMAS THREAT The raids seemed designed to humiliate Arafat, limit his ability to move about Palestinian areas and force him to crack down on militants. The military wing of the Hamas movement vowed to avenge the air strikes and overnight raids in into Gaza and the West Bank cities of Nablus and Ramallah. Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said his center-left Labour Party would consider its future in the coalition. Some Kandahar defenders fired missiles at U.S. warplanes, but made no hits, U.S. officials said. The city, the last bastion of the Taliban, remained in the hands of the Islamic group, but a seesawing battle was raging for its airport, a few miles away. Abdul Jabbar, an Afghan tribal representative in Pakistan in contact with commanders at the scene, described the fighting as close combat. They're face-to-face, he said. In Germany, four Afghan factions reached a breakthrough early Tuesday and agreed on a framework for a post-Taliban administration. The United States pressured the anti-Taliban northern alliance into dropping demands that threatened to derail talks on Afghanistan's political future. After days of clashes, Pashtun tribal fighters loyal to former Kandahar governor Gul Agha battled their way into Kandahar airport from the south on Tuesday despite fighting by pro-bin Laden Arab fighters, said one tribal commander Mohammed Jalal Khan. He said tribal warriors had captured half of the airport and were fighting for control of the terminal building. The group first reached the airport on Monday but was repelled by a counterattack, according to Agha's brother, Bismillah. Details of casualties were not available. Other troops loyal to former deputy foreign minister Hamid Karzai were advancing on Kandahar from the north. Some of Karzai's forces have said they have met no resistance from the Taliban. However, the Pakistan-based news service, Afghan Islamic Press, reported heavy fighting between Taliban and Pashtun tribes in the Shahwali Kot district, about 18 miles north of Kandahar overnight. The Taliban claimed that they had repelled an assault by Karzai's troops and had killed or wounded dozens of them. The Taliban also seized six vehicles and arrested two opposition fighters. Bodies of anti-Taliban fighters are scattered on the battleground, it said. Reports from either side could not be verified as the Taliban have barred western journalists from the region. Karzai is being touted as a possible interim national leader in a proposed broad-based temporary administration for Afghanistan. Refugees who have made it east to the safety of neighboring Pakistan or north to the Afghan capital, Kabul, have also reported fighting in several areas near Kandahar. Elsewhere, U.S. special forces are in Afghanistan's mountainous east working with local people in the hunt for bin Laden and his top lieutenants. The Pentagon believes they might be in the Tora Bora area in the White Mountains south of Jalalabad, hiding in vast fortified cave and tunnel networks used by Afghan guerrillas in the war against Soviet occupation in the 1980s. In Washington, Rear Adm. John Stufflebeem, the deputy director of operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said U.S. personnel were identifying targets for bombing rather than conducting cave-to-cave searches for bin Laden. Airstrikes have been heavy in the remote and rugged region. However, Stufflebeem denied reports that U.S. bombs had mistakenly pummeled villages and wrongly killed civilians and anti-Taliban fighters near Tora Bora. I don't have any reports of any villages being struck, Stufflebeem said. The only reports I have are that all our weapons have been on target. I find that a little bit suspect, that villages are being flattened. Journalists who visited destroyed Kama Ado villages saw nine bomb craters. The debris of thatch houses were spread over two hillsides along with children's shoes, dead cows and sheep and the tail fin of a U.S. Mk83 bomb. Local officials said scores were killed in three bombed villages. Anti-Taliban officials in the area appealed to Americans to improve their intelligence. The other main focus of U.S. bombing in Afghanistan is Kandahar and surrounding countryside, where bin Laden might also be sheltering. Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar and other senior Taliban leaders, who are believed to be holding out in Kandahar itself, have ordered their troops to defend it to the death and not retreat as they did when other cities were besieged by anti-Taliban forces. Refugees who have left the city say that Arab members of al-Qaida are leading Kandahar's defense. A few weeks ago, we celebrated our daughter's 27th birthday, and shortly before that, we celebrated our youngest son's 22nd birthday. I have often said that I would rather be a successful husband and father than a successful anything else. If I accomplish nothing more in life, I consider my life to be a huge success because of the outstanding family God has given to me. Our oldest son is in the early days of owning his own plumbing business. He and his wife named their little boy after yours truly. They were both virgins when they married. They are a dedicated Christian couple serving the Lord together in our church. They do not drink, smoke, or use drugs. They have never been in trouble with the law. They love God, each other, and their parents. Our only daughter is the apple of my eye. Her husband is in the early days of owning his own engineering company. They have three children. My daughter and her husband are the youth leaders in our church. They, too, were virgins when they married and do not drink, smoke, or use drugs. They have never been in trouble with the law, and they demonstrate the highest degree of Christian dedication. Our youngest son is in his first year of law school. He is still single. Like his brother and sister, he is a faithful, dedicated Christian that has kept himself morally clean and does not use alcohol, tobacco or drugs. He loves God and our family. If it sounds like I am bragging, I am - on Jesus! I recognize that every good gift comes from above, and that includes this most precious of all gifts: a Christian home. At the same time, many people who know my family have asked me to share the principles we used in rearing our children. (It is amusing that so many child experts have never successfully raised children of their own.) I begin by saying that raising children is hard work. The responsibility of raising children cannot be passed off to a school (public or private) or to any other institution, including government. I am sorry to have to tell Hillary that it takes a mom and dad, not a village, to raise a family! Parenting must be given the priority it deserves. Parenting is not a hobby; it is a full time occupation. One cannot ignore his or her children and expect them to turn out well. Beyond that, preoccupation with materialism and greed will also ruin a child. Wallowing in moral and spiritual poverty while surrounded by material and financial prosperity is the sad story of many American families, I am afraid. It takes time and effort to instill the fundamental principles of character and conviction into our children. There is no short cut, no easy way to raise honest, considerate children. Child rearing takes love, instruction, and discipline. All three ingredients are equally important. Children must be loved. They must be taught, and they must be disciplined. I would even argue, that if children are not taught right from wrong and are not properly disciplined, they are not loved. Any parent who truly loves his or her child will be ready and able to teach and discipline them. To be sure, many parents have done everything right, and their children have still turned out wrong. I do not understand it, but I know it is true. I am also aware that there are examples of parents who did it all wrong and their kids turned out right. Only the grace and sovereignty of God can explain some things. Overall, however, we have the kind of children we raise. Regular working-class folks who are living paycheck-to-paycheck, and especially poor people, living in the city itself won't be able to afford it... Kamen is touting it as a 'solution' to city life (which presumes a 'solution' is needed), when in fact when it comes to the general consumer market one will mostly find it being used in rich suburban communities, because those are the only people who will have both a need for it and the funds to afford it. He should follow his triumph in Afghanistan, the trumpet sounds, with a more magnificent destruction of Saddam Hussein. If it were in my power to stop him, I would. To attack Iraq now would forfeit all that the American president has won since Sept. 11: -- the backing of the United Nations; -- the resurrection of the Big Three alliance of America, Britain and Russia, which won World War II; -- the support of the Arab League; and -- a 90-percent job approval from the American people. It short, it would be nothing like the recent successes in Afghanistan. To topple Saddam would take a half million to a million U.S. troops. It would require an occupying force capable of policing a civilian population that would be embittered by enormous casualties and a brutal bombing campaign. Throughout much of the world, and not just in the Middle East, it would cast our side in the role of the aggressor. Once again, it would recall Pearl Harbor, but this time with us in the role of the imperial Japanese. I have given up trying to understand the thinking of those who agitate for such a wrong and tragic course against Saddam. They try and fail to blame him for Sept. 11. They try and fail to blame him for the anthrax letters. Yet, their inability to nail him only adds to their resolve. They want nothing less than an all-out war with Iraq. They want American troops to march into Baghdad, take control of the country, take out Saddam, and create a post-Saddam government favorable to the United States. I can't tell where President Bush stands, whether with his Secretary of State Colin Powell or with the neo-conservatives inside and outside of his administration who have long led their global wish-list with Saddam's destruction. He called this week for Saddam to let U.N. Inspectors search his country for weapons of mass destruction. While Hussein defied him, this is the sort of posturing that's been going on for years. Bush must certainly know the risks and costs of the all-out invasion the anti- Hussein hawks are demanding. It would put the United States on one side, Iraq and the rest of the world on the other. I doubt that even Tony Blair would back an attack on Baghdad. What a calamitous end this would bring to the current anti-terrorist campaign. Instead of leading the world in a war of justice, we would be undoubtedly scorned as an aggressor. Here at home, the country would suffer a hard division. The hunt for Osama bin Laden was, let's face it, an easy sell. His crowd killed our people. For that, he's going to die. A war with Iraq would enjoy none of this same authenticity. We would be attacking another country based on what it might do: use biological or nuclear weapons against another country. That might work with a small group of us. It will not sell to the majority. I liked the way Harry Truman talked about us. He called us this country. He didn't mean the government in Washington, but the American people in those splendid moments when we feel and act as one. Right now is one of those moments. The Taliban is finished. Forces allied with the United States have grabbed Kabul and other major cities, while the Marines hunt cave-to-cave for Osama bin Laden. Here at home, the country stands united. The terrorist network that attacked us on Sept. 11 is being decapitated. Best of all, we can see a feasible future line of attack. To wipe out bin Laden's Al-Qaeda network, America will now attack its other training grounds in Sudan, Somalia, Yemen and the Philippines. And along every step of the way, President Bush will retain the emphatic loyalty of the American people. That 90- percent job approval rating will stay at 90 percent. This isn't complicated. Bush is doing what any red-blooded American leader would do. He is bringing justice to those who killed our people in cold blood. That's something Americans have been ready to do since those early Revolutionary days, when our flag showed a coiled snake and the words Don't Tread on Me. The mass-circulation Okaz said in an editorial that an attack on such a scale could not have been carried out with such accuracy and precision without the help of parties inside the United States or with strong links in Washington. Six Israelis suspected of involvement in the attacks on New York and Washington were arrested in the US, to be later released. This confirms our strong suspicions about the involvement of Israel's Mossad in the ugly crime, Okaz said. If we look carefully into this matter, we can find no more influential sides in the US than the Israeli Mossad agents, who have the ability to penetrate and the capability to execute with high efficiency, the daily said. The paper said there was not sufficient evidence that Arabs and Muslims were behind the attacks, but it did not rule out the possibility that Mossad may have recruited some Muslims to carry out the atrocities. The main purpose of the conspiracy (attacks) is to undermine ties between Arabs and Muslims, especially moderate states, on the one hand and the US on the other, and to turn the Muslim and Christian civilizations against each other and incite hatred between their adherents, it said. The positive change in Washington's policy on Middle East peace and its support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state confirms that the United States has laid its hands on important leads indicating a direct role by the Mossad in the attacks, the paper asserted. Until nothing happened here, early on the morning of Saturday and again the following day, it was a large village with a small graveyard, but now that has been reversed. The funds are managed by some of Japan's largest banks and brokerage firms. Shares of UFJ Holdings, a banking giant, plunged nearly 10 percent, and Nikko Securities, a leading brokerage firm, slid 3.4 percent. Each ran major funds with big positions in Enron bonds. The weakness in financial stocks helped push the Nikkei 225-stock index down 3.1 percent. The stampede left investors with few places to turn for steady returns and low risk. In Japan, bank deposits pay almost no interest, so money market funds have been popular with pension funds and other investors that seek security with a reasonable return. In the United States, each share of a money market fund generally carries a face value of $1 and an implicit guarantee that the price will not fall below that amount, preserving investors' principal; there have been a few exceptions. The losses by the Japanese money funds on Enron bonds led skittish investors to withdraw cash last week, producing a net outflow for November of some 3 trillion yen ($24.2 billion). An alternative for investors is Japanese government bonds, but they, too, have given investors a scare in recent weeks. Major rating agencies have lowered Japan's sovereign credit rating and said more cuts may be coming. The country's debt rating is now near the point where banks that hold government bonds will have to reserve capital against the chance of a default. "This is a big headache for safe- haven investors," said Akio Yoshino, head of investment research and chief economist at SG Yamaichi Asset Management in Tokyo. "Investors are becoming very keen about avoiding credit risk, so brokers who recommended these trusts will continue to see a huge outflow," he said, referring to the funds. Managers of funds are hoping to shore up the confidence of investors by disclosing their bondholdings and other assets more frequently they are now obliged to report on them only twice a year and perhaps by restricting themselves to issuers with credit ratings of A or better, analysts said. If the money market funds stop buying debt of lower-rated companies, it could be a serious blow to Japan's steel makers, retailers and other highly indebted companies. PROFILE: BERNARD LEWIS British Svengali Behind Clash Of Civilizations by Scott Thompson and Jeffrey Steinberg On Nov. 19, octogenarian British Orientalist spook Bernard Lewis wrote an elaborate apologia for Osama bin Laden, a fervent pitch for the inevitability of the "Clash of Civilizations," in the pages of New Yorker magazine. Under the headline "The Revolt of Islam," Lewis lied that the emergence of "Islamic terrorism" in the recent decades, is completely consistent with mainstream Islam, which is committed to the subjugation of the infidels to Islamic law. He went through 14 pages of a fractured fairy-tale history of Islam, quoting bin Laden's Oct. 7, 2001 videotape, where the Saudi expatriate spoke of Islam's "humiliation and disgrace ... for more than 80 years"—a reference to the crushing of the Ottoman Empire by Britain and France in 1918. Lewis invented a tradition of jihad, "bequeathed to Muslims by the Prophet": "In principle," Lewis explained, "the world was divided into two houses: the House of Islam, in which a Muslim government ruled and Muslim law prevailed, and the House of War, the rest of the world, still inhabited and, more important, ruled by infidels. Between the two, there was to be a perpetual state of war until the entire world either embraced Islam or submitted to the rule of the Muslim state." Among all the different "infidels" ruling the House of War, Lewis asserted, Christianity was singled out as "their primary rival in the struggle for world domination." Lewis cited slogans painted on the walls of Jerusalem's Dome of the Rock from the Seventh Century, assailing Christianity. Lewis then claimed that the evolution of modern Islamic terrorism, specifically the al-Qaeda terrorism, had a long proud history within Islam, dating to the Assassins cult of the 11th-13th Centuries. (Lewis wrote a 1967 book, The Assassins, extolling the virtues of this secret society.) He also identified Saudi Arabia and Egypt as two regimes legitimately singled out by the Islamic jihadists, for their corruption by "modernism." He concluded, ominously: "For Osama bin Laden, 2001 marks the resumption of the war for the religious dominance of the world, that began in the Seventh Century If bin Laden can persuade the world of Islam to accept his views and his leadership, then a long and bitter struggle lies ahead, and not only for America. Sooner or later, al-Qaeda and related groups will clash with the other neighbors of Islam—Russia, China, India—who may prove less squeamish than the Americans in using their power against Muslims and their sanctities. If bin Laden is correct in his calculations and succeeds in his war, then a dark future awaits the world, especially the part of it that embraces Islam." Bernard Lewis Plan, Take II Since the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Lewis has, not surprisingly, resurfaced in numerous locations. After all, the 85-year old British Arab Bureau mandarin has been London's point-man in the United States since 1974, when he was posted to H.G. Wells' outpost at Princeton University's Center for Advanced Studies, to secure American compliance with British geopolitical manipulations in the Middle East, the Caucasus, the Caspian Basin, and Central Asia. To put it bluntly: British intelligence senior operator Lewis is the guiding hand behind the ongoing U.S. neo-conservative drive for a new "Thirty Years War" in Eurasia. This drive is at the heart of the ongoing coup d'état attempt against the George W. Bush Administration, which began with the Sept. 11 irregular warfare attacks on New York City and Washington. Lewis' arrival at Princeton, after serving on the faculty of the University of London's Middle East and Africa faculty (the repository of the original India House files, long officially referred to as the Colonial Department), coincided with then-Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger's fomenting of the civil war in Lebanon. That persists to the present day, and served as a laboratory for the later "Islamic revolution" in Iran. Lewis is no mere British quackademic. After obtaining his doctorate in the history of Islam from the University of London School of Oriental and African Studies, he joined the university faculty in 1938. That Ames sample was obtained from Porton Down (UK) in the mid-90's (the sample was marked "October 1932"); Porton had gotten it from USAMRIID. --Many anthrax strains were isolated by labs in Ames, Iowa starting with one in 1928. There is much confusion about who has which sub-strain or which one is meant by "Ames." --A 2000 paper by M. Hugh-Jones, PJ Jackson, P. Keim et al says that the Ames strain played a central role in the US BW program. Hugh-Jones says he learned that from David Huxsoll (Former Commander, USAMRIID). He also says Vollum 1B was the strain stockpiled. --USAMRIID claims to have obtained the "Ames" strain around 1980 from the USDA lab in Ames, Iowa. They don't know when it was isolated. They did transfer the strain to Porton in the '80s. WEAPONIZATION --The form in the senate letter: fine particles, very narrow size range (1.5-3 microns diameter), treated so it won't clump and will float. --An ABC reporter who writes on anthrax vaccine has privately confirmed that four labs have told him that under the electron microscope the sample looks just like material obtained by UNSCOM in Iraq. The Iraqi material was spray-dried BT. I have been told that such particles are distinguishable from milled particles. The US process did not use milling. --The senate sample contains silica, a drying agent used in the US process, and not bentonite (used by the Iraqis) --The US weaponization process is secret. Bill Patrick, its inventor, says it involves a COMBINATION of chemicals. Therefore, further analysis should be able to determine whether or not the process used to make the letter anthrax was identical to the US secret process. All the available information is consistent with a US government lab as the source, either of the anthrax itself or of the recipe for the US weaponization process. 3. TESTS IN PROGRESS? --A study of genetic drift at certain locations in anthrax is said to be underway at Northern Arizona State Univ. This will give an idea of how many times the letter anthrax replicated, in comparison to the reference strainie, whether it was grown on a very large scale (as in a State program) or on a very small scale, as would be likely if recently made by a terrorist. --Analysis of trace contaminants could be used to determine the method of production. --Senator Bob Graham, Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said that 30-40 labs in US and perhaps 100 worldwide could have produced the anthrax mailed Daschle. Investigators can identify with great certainty which lab produced the anthrax, Graham said, but it will be a laborious, time-consuming process. (Chicago Tribune, 27 Oct 01). 4. LETTER ANALYSIS --Analysts believe the letters were not written by a Middle-Easterner. The FBI now conjectures that the perpetrator was a lone domestic terrorist (obviously one with a scientific background and lab experience who could handle hazardous materials). 5. TIMING --There was only 1 week between 11 Sept and Sept. 18th, when the first two letters (and probably a letter, never found, to AMI) were postmarked. This suggests that the anthrax was already in hand before Sept 11. --Did the perpetrator have advance knowledge of the Sept 11 attacks? Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld has said that he does not believe al Qaeda was responsible for the anthrax attack, and other public officials have increasingly indicated that the perpetrator was probably domestic. 6. PUBLIC STATEMENTS At first, US officials provided miscellaneous bits of information, some conflicting; then denied some of the earlier information, then clammed up. Chances are they know more than they want to say. They are clearly concentrating on domestic investigations, however (the US even rejected a UN resolution condemning the anthrax attack, on the grounds that it might have been domestic terrorism). --The Secretary of Health and Human Services said that some of the relevant information is classified, and some is restricted by the FBI. 7. SPECULATION --The perpetrator was not only an American scientist but one with access to US weaponized anthrax or one who had been taught by an expert how to make it. --An astute observer has pointed out that the letters warned of anthrax or the need to take antibiotics, making it possible for those who handled the letters

Pakistani Mujahideen hailed from the inner Sindh areas, Karachi and other parts of the country, he added. "It was not a revolt from POWs in any way but a planned conspiracy from US, Israel and Northern Alliance coalition agencies and forces, he shuddered while narrating the horrendous event. The prisoners were unarmed and were fired upon with the light guns and later in collaboration with Northern Alliance Forces heavy guns were used to exterminate them, he added. Hundreds of prisoners were killed brutally within minutes. The US forces for giving it the name of revolt opened aerial firing to give impression that Taliban have captured the arms. Later the US warplanes bombarded the site, he maintained. Giving further details, he said that those who survived were captured by US forces and were crushed under tanks with their arms and legs tied. "I and some other Mujahideen escaped the bloody scene in the dark of night", he could not contain his tears which made their way to the earth to mourn over the unnamed Mujahideen whose mutilated parts implant a slap on the faces of so called champions of human rights. Genetic evidence links Jews to their ancient tribe By Judy Siegel JERUSALEM (November 20) - Genetic evidence continues to provide additional proof to the claims that the Jewish people are descended from a common ancient Israelite father: Despite being separated for over 1,000 years, Sephardi Jews of North African origin are genetically indistinguishable from their brethren from Iraq, according to The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. They also proved that Sephardi Jews are very close genetically to the Jews of Kurdistan, and only slight differences exist between these two groups and Ashkenazi Jews from Europe. These conclusions are reached in an article published recently in the American Journal of Human Genetics and written by Prof. Ariella Oppenheim of the Hebrew University (HU) and Hadassah-University Hospital in Ein Kerem. Others involved are German doctoral student Almut Nebel, Dr. Marina Faerman of HU, Dr. Dvora Filon of Hadassah-University Hospital, and other colleagues from Germany and India. The researchers conducted blood tests of Ashkenazi, Sephardi and Kurdish Jews and examined their Y chromosomes, which are carried only by males. They then compared them with those of various Arab groups - Palestinians, Beduins, Jordanians, Syrians and Lebanese - as well as to non-Arab populations from Transcaucasia - Turks, Armenians and Moslem Kurds. The study is based on 526 Y chromosomes typed by the Israeli team and additional data on 1,321 individuals from 12 populations. The typing of the Jewish groups was performed at the National Genome Center at HU's Silberman Institute of Life Sciences. The Fertile Crescent of the Middle East was one of the few centers in which the transition from hunting-gathering to permanent settlement and agriculture took place. Genetic studies suggest that migrating Neolithic farmers dispersed their technological innovations and domesticated animals from the Middle East towards Europe, North Africa and Southwest Asia. Studies of Y chromosomes have become powerful tools for the investigation of the genetic history of males, since these chromosomes are transmitted from fathers to sons. Surprisingly, the study shows a closer genetic affinity by Jews to the non-Jewish, non-Arab populations in the northern part of the Middle East than to Arabs. These findings are consistent with known cultural links that existed among populations in the Fertile Crescent in early history, and indicate that the Jews are direct descendants of the early Middle Eastern core populations, which later divided into distinct ethnic groups speaking different languages. Previous investigations by the HU researchers suggested a common origin for Jewish and non-Jewish populations living in the Middle East. The current study refines and delineates that connection. It is believed that the majority of today's Jews - not including converts and non-Jews with whom Jews intermarried - descended from the ancient Israelis that lived in the historic Land of Israel until the destruction of the Second Temple and their dispersal into the Diaspora. The researchers say that a genetic analysis of the chromosomes of Jews from various countries show that there was practically no genetic intermixing between them and the host populations among which they were scattered during their dispersion - whether in Eastern Europe, Spain, Portugal or North Africa. A particularly intriguing case illustrating this is that of the Kurdish Jews, said to be the descendants of the Ten Tribes of Israel who were exiled in 723 BCE. to the area known today as Kurdistan, located in Northern Iraq, Iran and Eastern Turkey. They continued to live there as a separate entity until their immigration to Israel in the 1950s. The Kurdish Jews of today show a much greater affinity to their fellow Jews elsewhere than to the Kurdish Moslems.

Television viewers watching the horrific events of Sept. 11 saw evidence of explosions before the towers collapsed. Televised images show what appears to be a huge explosion occurring near ground level, in the vicinity of the 47-story Salomon Brothers Building, known as WTC 7, prior to the collapse of the first tower. Van Romero, an explosives expert and former director of the Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center at New Mexico Tech, said on Sept. 11, "My opinion is, based on the videotapes, that after the airplanes hit the World Trade Center there were some explosive devices inside the buildings that caused the towers to collapse." The collapse of the structures resembled the controlled implosions used to demolish old structures and was "too methodical to be a chance result of airplanes colliding with the structures," Romero told The Albuquerque Journal hours after the attack. Implosions are violent collapses inwards, which are used to demolish buildings in areas of high density, to prevent damage to surrounding buildings. Precision-timed explosives are placed on strategic load-bearing columns and beams to cause the controlled collapse. Demolition experts say that towers are the most difficult buildings to bring down in a controlled manner. A tower tends to fall like a tree, unless the direction of its fall is controlled by directional charges. The WTC towers "smokestacked" neatly, falling within the boundaries of their foundations. Skeptics say this could not have happened coincidentally and it must have been caused by strategically placed and precisely timed internal charges. Videotape images may reveal these internal charges precipitating the controlled demolition of the towers and WTC 7. Romero is vice president of research at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, which studies explosive materials and the effects of explosions on buildings, aircraft and other structures, and often assists in forensic investigations into terrorist attacks, often by setting off similar explosions and studying the effects. After being hit by the aircraft, the twin towers appeared to be stable. Then without warning, at 9:58 a.m. the south tower imploded vertically downwards, 53 minutes after being hit. At 10:28, 88 minutes after being struck, the north tower collapsed. "It would be difficult for something from the plane to trigger an event like that," Romero said. If explosions did cause the towers to collapse, "It could have been a relatively small amount of explosives placed in strategic points," he said. "One of the things terrorist events are noted for is a diversionary attack and secondary device," Romero said. Attackers detonate an initial, diversionary explosion, in this case the collision of the planes into the towers, which brings emergency personnel to the scene, then detonate a second explosion. Ten days after the attack, following criticism of his initial remarks, Romero did an about-face in his analysis of the collapse, "Certainly the fire is what caused the building to fail," he told the Journal on Sept. 21. The twin towers were struck by Boeing 767's carrying approximately 23,000 gallons of fuel. However, there is other information that lends credence to Romero's controversial scenario. One eyewitness whose office is near the World Trade Center told AFP that he was standing among a crowd of people on Church Street, about two-and-a-half blocks from the South tower, when he saw "a number of brief light sources being emitted from inside the building between floors 10 and 15." He saw about six of these brief flashes, accompanied by "a crackling sound" before the tower collapsed. Each tower had six central support columns. One of the first firefighters in the stricken second tower, Louie Cacchioli, 51, told People Weekly on Sept. 24: "I was taking firefighters up in the elevator to the 24th floor to get in position to evacuate workers. On the last trip up a bomb went off. We think there were bombs set in the building." Kim White, 32, an employee on the 80th floor, also reported hearing an explosion. "All of a sudden the building shook, then it started to sway. We didn't know what was going on," she told People. "We got all our people on the floor into the stairwell . . . at that time we all thought it was a fire . . .We got down as far as the 74th floor . . . then there was another explosion." Switzerland and the gun Switzerland has long maintained its armed neutrality Guns are deeply rooted within Swiss culture - but the gun crime rate is so low that statistics are not even kept. The country has a population of six million, but there are estimated to be at least two million publicly-owned firearms, including about 600,000 automatic rifles and 500,000 pistols. This is in a very large part due to Switzerland's unique system of national defence, developed over the centuries. Instead of a standing, full-time army, the country requires every man to undergo some form of military training for a few days or weeks a year throughout most of their lives. Between the ages of 21 and 32 men serve as frontline troops. They are given an M-57 assault rifle and 24 rounds of ammunition which they are required to keep at home. Once discharged, men serve in the Swiss equivalent of the US National Guard, but still have to train occasionally and are given bolt rifles. Women do not have to own firearms, but are encouraged to. Few restrictions In addition to the government-provided arms, there are few restrictions on buying weapons. Some cantons restrict the carrying of firearms - others do not. The government even sells off surplus weaponry to the general public when new equipment is introduced. Guns and shooting are popular national pastimes. More than 200,000 Swiss attend national annual marksmanship competitions. But despite the wide ownership and availability of guns, violent crime is extremely rare. There are only minimal controls at public buildings and politicians rarely have police protection. Mark Eisenecker, a sociologist from the University of Zurich told BBC News Online that guns are anchored in Swiss society and that gun control is simply not an issue. Some pro-gun groups argue that Switzerland proves their contention that there is not necessarily a link between the availability of guns and violent crime in society. Low crime But other commentators suggest that the reality is more complicated. Switzerland is one of the world's richest countries, but has remained relatively isolated. It has none of the social problems associated with gun crime seen in other industrialised countries like drugs or urban deprivation. MONDAY DECEMBER 03 2001 Bush Law Chief Tried to Drop Habeas Corpus FROM THE TIMES OF LONDON BY ROLAND WATSON THE Bush Administration sought the power to suspend all suspects' rights in the most extreme example of its squeeze on civil liberties since September 11. According to a draft of the anti-terrorism Bill which was published yesterday, John Ashcroft, the Attorney-General, initially wanted to do away with the fundamental legal tenet of habeas corpus for terrorist suspects. Such a move would have allowed the authorities to hold suspects in secret and indefinitely without charging them or producing them before a judge. A secret first draft of Mr Ashcroft's Bill included a section titled Suspension of the Writ of Habeas Corpus. Its inclusion has astounded some members of Congress. James Sensenbrenner, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, told Newsweek magazine: That stuck out like a sore thumb. It was the first thing I crossed out. Habeas corpus establishes the requirement on authorities to produce a suspect before a judge at regular intervals so that the court, and therefore the public, is satisfied that the detention is lawful. The suspension of the writ did not make it into the final draft of Mr Ashcroft's Bill but it was seized on as another example of how far the Administration is prepared to go. Mr Ashcroft faces a grilling on Capitol Hill this week for other measures in his postSeptember 11 crackdown, in which thousands of young Muslim men have faced questioning and detention. It was also revealed over the weekend that he wanted to renounce the restrictions on the FBI from carrying out covert surveillance of religious and political organisations. The proposal would override protections put in place in the 1970s after the death of J. Edgar Hoover, the notoriously hardline FBI Director, after the agency admitted that it had spent much of the 1960s and early 1970s spying on Martin Luther King, the Black Panthers, the Ku Klux Klan and other groups that it considered dangerous. Latest polls show that the average American is broadly supportive of the restrictions on civil liberties: 86 per cent believe that the Government has not overstepped the mark.
