Oilmen don't want another

Critics of US policy claim it aims to carve up Iraq's oil wealth. But, argues
Anthony Sampson, oil companies fear the fallout from a new Gulf
warObserver special:
Iraq

SampsonSunday

Observer
While Washington hawks depict a war
against Iraq as achieving security of oil supplies, Western oil companies are
worried about the short-term danger and the supposed long-term benefits of
intervention.
Left-wing critics in Britain depict the proposed invasion as an oil war.
Former Cabinet Minister Mo Mowlam has called it a 'war to secure oil supplies'
as a cover for a war on terrorism. And the fact that President George Bush and
Vice-President Dick Cheney have both been enriched by oil companies raises
suspicions about their motives for war.
But oil companies have had little influence on US policy-making. Most big
American companies, including oil companies, do not see a war as good for
business, as falling share prices indicate; while the obvious beneficiaries of
war are arms companies.
Western oil companies have differing attitudes. The French want to maintain
their special relationship with Iraq, while seeking links with Iraqi opposition
leaders who may form a post-war government.
The Russians are performing a more difficult balancing act. Worried that
their previous friendship with Saddam might exclude them from a post-war
share-out, they have sought assurances from Washington in return for their
diplomatic support for a war. But Saddam has counter-attacked by cancelling the
Russian contract for developing new oilfields.
The British believe they are specially entitled to share in the development
of Iraqi oil supplies. BP (then known as Anglo-Persian) was involved in the
discovery of oil after the British and the French invented Iraq as a separate
state, carved out of the Ottoman Empire in 1920.
But BP is worried about being displaced by US companies. As Lord Browne, its
chief executive, said in October: 'We would like to make sure, if Iraq changes
its regime, that there should be a level playing-field for the selection of oil
companies to go in there.'
The Americans, if they won the war, would be in the strongest position to
insist on access to Iraqi oil and exploration. But they cannot ignore the
interests of the Iraqi opposition. The State Department has convened a working
group on oil and natural gas in Washington this week. It will include
representatives of Iraqi groups and the US Energy Department, which will present
proposals to a transitional government.
A State Department spokesman said: 'There is a misconception that the US is
trying to orchestrate the post-Saddam oil market in Iraq. That's not at all what
we are doing.' But European companies fear the Americans are trying to do just
that, while using the promise of future oil supplies as leverage to ensure
support for the war.
James Woolsey, former CIA director, has explained: 'The French and Russians
should be told that if they are of assistance in moving Iraq towards decent
government, we'll do our best to ensure the new government and American
companies work closely with them.'
Some companies are worried that the opportunities for developing Iraqi oil
will lead to a free-for-all. 'I've had one opposition leader offering a
commission in return for access to oil,' said one oil executive. 'I showed him
the door, but there will be many more.'
Many neo-conservatives in Washington are indicating they want the US
intervention to go beyond Iraq; and to redraw the diplomatic map of the Middle
East. They look to a realignment of US foreign policy, to intervene in both Iran
and Saudi Arabia, ensuring both the security of American oil supplies, and the
security of Israel.
Above all, they see the development of Iraqi oil as lessening US dependence
on Saudi Arabia, which they see as a dangerous source of future terrorists.
The oil companies are much less confident that this escalation will protect
supplies. Shell and Exxon-Mobil have made huge investments in natural gas in
Saudi Arabia, which could be at risk in a confrontation with the Saudi
government. All oil companies in the Middle East would face a more dangerous
political climate, caught between the American-Israeli intervention and
nationalists fearing reversion to a neo-colonial system.
Oil companies dread having supplies interrupted by burning oilfields,
saboteurs and chaotic conditions. And any attempt to redraw the frontiers could
increase the dangers in both Iran and Iraq, as rivals seek to regain territory.
Hawks in Washington believe military intervention could bring about the
demise of Opec (the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries), thus cutting
oil prices. But collapsing prices would be devastating, not only for regional

  Study:
Wrong impressions helped support Iraq warBy FRANK
  DAVIESKnight Ridder Newspapers

WASHINGTON - A majority of Americans have held
at least one of three mistaken impressions about the U.S.-led war in Iraq,
according to a new study released Thursday, and those misperceptions
contributed to much of the popular support for the war.
The three common mistaken impressions are that:

U.S. forces found weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

There's clear evidence that Iraqi President Saddam Hussein worked
closely with the Sept. 11 terrorists.

People in foreign countries generally either backed the U.S.-led war
or were evenly split between supporting and opposing it.

Overall, 60 percent of Americans held at least one of those views in
polls reported between January and September by the Program on
International Policy Attitudes, based at the University of Maryland in
College Park, and the polling firm, Knowledge Networks based in Menlo
  Park, Calif.
"While we cannot assert that these misperceptions created the support
for going to war with Iraq, it does appear likely that support for the war
would be substantially lower if fewer members of the public had these
misperceptions," said Steven Kull, who directs Maryland's program.
In fact, no weapons of mass destruction have been found in Iraq. U.S.
intelligence has found no clear evidence that Saddam was working closely
with al-Qaida or was involved in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Gallup polls
found large majorities opposed to the war in most countries.
PIPA's seven polls, which included 9,611 respondents, had a margin of
error from 2 to 3.5 percent.
The analysis released Thursday also correlated the misperceptions with
the primary news source of the mistaken respondents. For example, 80
percent of those who said they relied on Fox News and 71 percent of those
who said they relied on CBS believed at least one of the three
  misperceptions.
The comparable figures were 47 percent for those who said they relied
most on newspapers and magazines and 23 percent for those who said they
relied on PBS or National Public Radio.
The reasons for the misperceptions are numerous, Kull and other
  analysts said.
They noted that the Bush administration had misstated or exaggerated
some of the intelligence findings, with Bush himself saying in May: "We
found the weapons of mass destruction and we'll find more as time goes
  by."
The Bush administration has also been a factor in persistent
  confusion.
Last month, for example, Bush said there was no evidence that Saddam
was involved in the Sept. 11 attack after Vice President Dick Cheney
suggested a link. Cheney, in a "Meet the Press" interview, had described
Iraq as "the geographic base of the terrorists who had us under assault
now for many years, but most especially on 9-11."
Why some news audiences had more accurate impressions than others was
  less clear.
Kull cited instances in which TV and newspapers gave prominent coverage
to reports that banned weapons might have been found in Iraq, but only
modest coverage when those reports turned out to be wrong.
Susan Moeller, a University of Maryland professor, said that much
reporting had consisted of "stenographic coverage of government
statements," with less attention to whether the government's statements
  were accurate.
The study found that belief in inaccurate information often persisted,
and that misconceptions were much more likely among backers of the war.
Last month, as in June, for example, nearly a quarter of those polled
thought banned weapons had been found in Iraq. Nearly half thought in
September that there was clear evidence that Saddam had worked closely
  with al-Qaida.
Among those with one of the three misconceptions, 53 percent supported
the war. Among those with two, 78 percent supported it. Among those

Are Americans Event Naïve?

Yesterday, 7 December 1941-a date which will live in infamy-the United
States of America
was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire
of Japan.
President Roosevelt

AIR RAID PEARL HARBOR. THIS IS NOT DRILL.
7:55 A.M. Hawaii Standard Time December 7th 1941

On December 7th, 1941, at 6:00am HST some 183 Japanese aircraft are launched
from Japanese aircraft carriers and at 7:02am radar operators Private George
Elliot and Private Joseph Lockard spotted the Japanese aircraft onto their
approach to Oahu, and contacted the US Information Center to report the
contacts and was informed that it was a flight of American B-17 Flying
Fortresses on an approach to the islands. And at 7:15am a second wave of 167
Japanese aircraft were in the air and they also used the radio station at
Honolulu as a beacon to find their way to Pearl Harbor. It was at 7:55am
that the attack on Pearl Harbor began with the bombing Wheeler Field, just 8
miles from Pearl Harbor.

So December 7th 1941 at 07:55 Hawaiian time, the first wave of Japanese
attack aircraft were over Pearl Harbor, and by 8am that Sunday morning the
American anti-aircraft guns were heard by the people of Honolulu and
surrounding area. For two hours and twenty minutes Pearl Harbor was bombed
by the Japanese pilots. About 3,581 people were killed, missing, or wounded,
of which 2,008 were US Navy dead, and 710 wounded and109 Marines were killed
and 69 wounded, whereas the US Army suffered some 218 dead and 364 wounded.
Also 68 civilians were killed and 35 wounded, many from friendly fire. The
United States lost a total of 5 battleships with another 3 damaged and also
3 light cruisers, 3 destroyers, and 4 auxiliary craft that were either sunk
or heavily damaged. In addition to those there were 205 aircraft either
destroyed or damaged. Only 29 Japanese pilots were shot down by American
gunfire, most during the attack of the second wave. But fortunately the
three American aircraft carriers that were stationed at Pearl Harbor were
not docked at the time of the attack. On September 2nd 1945, Japan
officially surrendered aboard the USS Missouri and the terms of surrender
allowed Emperor Hirohito to maintain his throne.

It has been said that the White House knew of the coming attack because the
intelligence services in South America told the White House that the United
States was to be attacked. It was also said the selection of war ships at
Pearl Harbor was chosen with the prior knowledge of an attack. And the
attack on Pearl Harbor brought the United States into the Second World War,
a war that ended for with the United States dropping two atomic bombs in
anger onto the two Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

According to some President Franklin D. Roosevelt sacrificed his American
warships and over 2000 lives because Hitler had to be stopped. Otherwise,
once the Germans and Japanese finished subduing Europe and Asia, they would
turn on America, and conquer the whole world, with Hitler's troops
eventually goose-stepping through New York City.

On December 7th at 1:50pm Washington time, Harry Hopkins, who was the only
person with FDR when he received the news of the attack on Pearl Harbor by
telephone, and wrote that FDR was unsurprised and expressed 'great relief'.
And Eleanor Roosevelt wrote about December 7th 1941 in her book 'This I
Remember' that FDR became in a way more serene. And yet over 2,000 in the
US Navy were soon to die.

So to number crunching the horrific event of December 7th 1941.

First to the 'Statue of Liberty' that is 'Liberty Enlightening the World' I
suggest represents the 'Statue of Horus'

Statue from base to torch is 151 feet 1 inch or 151.083334 feet or 1,813
inches

Pedestal 154 feet or 1,848 inches.

Total height 305 feet 1 inch or 305.083334 feet or 3,661 inches

And the diabolical reference number 3,661 + 3,661 is equivalent to Horus at
6,100 + the 'Skull and Bones' flag at 611 + 611. So the 'Statue of Liberty'
can be considered as representing Horus wearing the mantle of Lucifer, the
emblem of the Order of the Illuminati' the banner that flies over the 'Gates
of Hell'.

Now my number crunching and revelations has shown me that a fundamental
reference number for Satan, the Adversary of Humankind, the Deceiver, is
emphatically 155.

And counting from 12:05am, that is five minutes after midnight Hawaii
Standard Time on December 7th 1941 to a moment past midnight Eastern
Standard Time, (not EDT), September 11th 2001, the infamous day called 9.11,
one of the most important Time Markers in over 1,000 years, is 59.76167825
years.

And 59.76167825 years x the Statue of Liberty at 1813 inches x 1848 inches
and squared thrice x 6 is Satan's reference 1.550e+66.

So can this calculation really be no more than a contrived bit of number
crunching? Of course many Skeptics would say this if they bothered to read
such, but then some really do prefer to stay not

EU looking to defence harmony by 2010

  By Judy Dempsey in Rome

  Published: October 4 2003 5:00 | Last Updated: October 4
2003 5:00

Europe's defence ministers yesterday backed ambitious plans to have
their armed forces capable of working together by 2010. The radical
plans would apply to resources, doctrines and
equipment.

The initiative is part of a strategy aimed at creating defence
structures in the European Union that are more coherent, homogenous and
able to respond quickly to crises.
Even though 11 European Union countries are members of the Nato
military alliance, EU member states have made little progress towards
harmonising the military equipment they purchase or co-ordinating their
capabilities.
The calls for a greater push on military capabilities were made by
Javier Solana, the EU foreign policy chief, and Antonio Martini, defence
minister of Italy, also chairing the EU's rotating presidency.
Both said Europe's ambitions to have a strong and effective security
and defence policy - particularly in crisis management, conflict
prevention and peacekeeping missions - could not be achieved without
better capabilities. These included logistics and the ability to sustain
troops on the ground for long periods.
A paper presented by Italy, said that if the EU wanted to be active
"it must develop a strategic culture that favours early, rapid and, when
necessary, robust intervention in order to try to head off or defuse
crises".
Italy also called for a special agency to co-ordinate capabilities
among the member states. Geoff Hoon, British defence minister, and Henk
Kamp, his Dutch counterpart, suggested Mr Solana head the agency, which
could be set up by December.
Mr Solana, who has spent the past four years trying to improve
Europe's security/defence capabilities, said there was little point in
member countries offering forces if they were not "usable in real
operations". The EU, he added, needed armed forces that were "agile,
flexible, deployable and sustainable".
That meant combining forces, focusing on quality and beefing up
military spending.
In 2000 the EU average defence expenditure as a percentage of gross
domestic product was 1.8 per cent, compared with the Pentagon's 3.1 per
cent.
Lord Robertson, Nato secretary-general, said yesterday that the
Europeans had to spend on quality, not quantity, particularly on
research and development.

Again, from the Financial Times of London

A necessary bureaucratic tool for Europe
By Robert Graham and Raphael Minder
Published: October 3 2003 20:31 | Last Updated: October 3 2003 20:31

The idea of a powerful and intrusive administrative machine, combined
with petty officialdom, makes British hackles rise over the introduction
of identity cards. Yet in continental Europe, where the identity card
has long been in use, it is regarded as a necessary bureaucratic tool
rather than a restraint on individual liberties.

In most European capitals, identity cards are a fact of everyday life,
as much as credit cards. And where they exist, identity cards have
become even more acceptable now that people are allowed to use them to
cross borders in the Schengen area - Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland,
France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway,
Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Norway, and Iceland - without a passport.

The Schengen agreement allows each nation to design its own identity
cards.

Now there are moves to introduce electronic identity cards with a more
intrusive biometric system of identification.

The German identity card currently has a barcode and provides limited
personal information such as eye colour. Portugal's card includes a
fingerprint. Italy's card leaves a space for a sophisticated fingerprint
which has yet to be used; the photograph of the holder is merely stapled
on rather than engraved.

In France, there are plans for the reproduction of a fingerprint, the
structure of the hand and the iris. There has been some controversy over
the issue of whether women should be allowed to use photographs of
themselves wearing the Muslim head scarf. The interior ministry has
ruled against this practice.

France was the first country to introduce a form of identity card in
1888. The measure was conceived not to provide documents for the local
population but to obtain better control over foreigners inside the
country. In 1893, French law formally required foreigners wanting to
work in France to obtain an identity card. During the first wor ld war
the measure was extended for security reasons to include all foreigners
on French territory.

The French national identity card dates from 1965 - a near passport-size
two-page document. The photographs on this version were relatively easy
to replace and a more sophisticated plastic card was introduced in 1992.

Unlike passports, the issuing of identity cards has been free in France
since 1988.

Within EU countries the debate now is about what sort of identity
document should be required of temporary residents and migrant workers.

This week EU interior ministers signalled their willingness to back a
proposal from the European Commission to include biometric technology on
visas and residency permits to help combat forgery and illegal
immigration.

The Commission's proposal is that by 2006 EU countries issuing visas
would include a photograph and fingerprint - the latter being stored
electronically in a computer chip on the travel documents.

The UK may be thinking about the use of an ID card but everywhere else
in Europe the debate has moved a lot further than that, said one senior
EU official.

[Eugene Volokh, 10:35
AM]Signing treaties may erode the Bill of Rights: American decisions
to sign on to international treaties may erode the protections of the Bill of
Rights, for instance the First Amendment. Yes, the Supreme Court has
supposedly said otherwise, in Reid v. Covert (1957): "[N]o agreement
with a foreign nation can confer power on the [federal government] which is
free from the restraints of the Constitution" (speaking of the Bill of
Rights). But it turns out that this supremacy of the Bill of Rights really
isn't that strong: The President and the Senate can, in the long run,
"insinuat[e] international law" that would create "a partial displacement of
constitutional hegemony" (for instance, with "an international norm against
hate speech . . . supply[ing] a basis for prohibiting it, the First Amendment
notwithstanding"). "In the short term," international norms would and should
be "relevan[t] . . . in domestic constitutional interpretation." But "In the
long run, it may point to the Constitution's more complete
subordination." These quotes are not from
some anti-internationalist "The U.N. is coming to take away our liberties"
conservatives. They are from a recent article by Prof. Peter Spiro, one of the
leading American international law scholars; the article, called Treaties,
International Law, and Constitutional Rights, was published in the
Stanford Law Review, which is generally seen as one of the top 3
legal journals in the country. Prof. Spiro
is both defending the notion that treaties should be able to trump
constitutional rights -- "If some constitutional norms are more
appropriately set at the international level" (and he believes they are),
"that should justify a treaty power that, in some cases, overcomes even the
Bill of Rights" -- and predicting that treaties will over time do so.
Courts, he acknowledges, would try to "maintain[] the formal hegemony of the
domestic constitution," but "this formal hegemony may disguise a loss of
domestic constitutional autonomy over the long run." "Constitutional rights
'adjusted' by treaty norms are changed by them. The Constitution is read to
conform with the treaty." Of course, some
people may be quite happy about this: They might well conclude that parts of
the Bill of Rights should be superseded by "international" norms. They
may think the international lawmaking community (mostly, I suspect, composed
of European legal and political elites, plus of course those segments of
American legal and political elites that are involved in this field) will
indeed reach better results than those provided for by the current
understanding of the U.S. Constitution. But
those of us who disagree should vigilantly watch for, and resist, the
"displacement of constitutional hegemony" that the article welcomes. We should
insist that the President and the Senate consistently stress in all the
treaties they sign and ratify that our agreement to the treaty is constrained
by our Constitution, and that the treaty should be read to conform to the
Constitution, and not the other way around. We should criticize judges who
rely on international norms in interpreting American constitutional provisions
(in this respect, reading Prof. Spiro's article has led me to reconsider some
of my views in this post, and to view with much more alarm reliance on
international law in American constitutional interpretation). And we
should assiduously publicize the ways in which international rules are, in our
view, worse than ours, for instance to show that foreign bans on "hate speech"
actually end up banning (as American First Amendment thinking would have
suggested) a good deal of speech that deserves to be protected (see, for
  instance, this
post by David Bernstein). Our Constitution
is far from perfect, both as written and as interpreted. I think courts should
indeed change their views on many issues, and people should try to press
courts to do so. But this should be our decision as Americans. We should not
cede our control over our constitutional rights to international bodies,
international professional elites, or even to our own President and
Senate. In any event, that's just my opinion.
  Read the
Stanford Law Review article, which is fortunately quite readable
and not terribly long (30 law review pages) for a different
view."

[CTRL] Did Rupert Murdoch Have Prior Knowledge Of 9/11?

Did Rupert Murdoch Have Prior Knowledge of 9/11?
By Christopher Bollyn American Free Press

Christopher Bollyn is an investigative journalist who has written extensively on the events of September 11, 2001 in the Washington-based American Free Press. He has researched different aspects of the 9/11 attacks and uncovered facts and evidence that challenge the official version of events.

Two organizations, both pro-Israel, the Anti Defamation League (ADL) and the Fox News network, have desperately tried to smear Bollyn as an anti-Semite in order to discredit him and diminish the significance of his work. At the helm of both organizations, the ADL and Fox News, is an Australian-born Zionist named Keith Rupert Murdoch.

Murdoch and the ADL are clearly trying to marginalize Bollyn, and other independent researchers like him, who use facts to challenge the governments flawed explanation of what occurred on 9/11.

Did Rupert Murdoch Have Prior Knowledge of 9/11?

Rupert Murdoch is said to be televisions most powerful man in the world with the capacity to reach more than 110 million viewers across four continents. Murdoch sits at the helm of News Corp., the parent company of Fox News network, and controls a large part of the mass media in the United States, including The New York Post and the Fox cinema and television network.

Murdochs international media network owns more than 175 newspapers and magazines on three continents, publishes 40 million papers a week and dominates the newspaper markets in Britain, Australia and New Zealand.

A close friend of the accused Israeli war criminal and prime minister Ariel Sharon, Murdoch and his media network are well known for supporting Israels right-wing Likud Party and the Anglo-American war on terrorism.

Less well known, however, is the fact that Murdoch produced a television program in 2000, which predicted with uncanny accuracy the attacks of 9/11.

Murdoch also has long-standing relationships with the key individuals who gained possession of the World Trade Center shortly before 9/11 and who profited from its destruction.
In 2000, Murdoch produced a television program about a terror attack on the World Trade Center, which predicted precisely the kind of attack that occurred on 9/11. He is also closely connected to the two individuals who leased, and then insured the WTC property and their future earnings against precisely such an attack.

These connections and circumstances suggest that Murdoch had a considerable degree of prior knowledge of the attacks on the World Trade Center.

Repeated calls to Murdochs office by American Free Press to inquire about what he may have known or suspected about the possibility of such an attack were not returned.

The Lone Gunmen

On March 4, 2001, Fox TV, a branch of Murdochs media empire, broadcast the pilot episode of a spin-off series based on characters from the popular Fox program X-Files. The short-lived series was called The Lone Gunman.

A Murdoch-owned company called Canadian Millennium Productions, Ltd. (News Corp. owns 83 percent), produced the pilot episode for The Lone Gunman in Vancouver, Canada, and New York City from March 20 to April 7, 2000.

The title The Lone Gunman refers to a Washington-based government watchdog news weekly, not unlike the court-killed SPOTLIGHT and the American Free Press. The shows main characters are the investigative reporters who produce the paper.

The pilot episode of The Lone Gunman depicted the hijacking of a passenger aircraft by a hostile computer hacker who takes control of the plane computer flight system and directs it to fly into one of the towers of the World Trade Center.

The climactic sequence shows the plane heading straight for one of the twin towers, but thanks to the efforts of the crew of The Lone Gunman and the powerful Octium computer chip, the pilots are able to regain control of the plane at the last second and avoid the building by inches.

The pilots do not swerve away from the tower but pull the plane up in a steep climb. In a memorable scene full of suspense the plane narrowly missed the tower.

The background footage for the planes approach to the WTC was actually filmed during the spring of 2000 by a special aerial crew that used a helicopter flying low over Manhattan on a night flight toward the twin towers.

Despite the uncanny similarities between the Murdoch-produced film and the horrific reality of 9/11, rather than being discussed in the media as a prescient warning of the possibility of such an attack, the pilot episode of The Lone Gunman series seemed to have been quietly forgotten.

While an estimated 13.2 million Fox TV viewers are reported to have watched the pilot episode of The Lone Gunman, broadcast on March 4, 2001, when life imitated art just six months later on 9/11, no one in the media seemed to recall the program.

A Study in Art I
By Israel Shamir

Part One

Wandering on the great peninsula of Peloponnese I drove into the medieval-looking town of Nauplio. Its harbour is guarded by a grey-walled islet, cosy cafes line up the waterfront, while behind them, narrow and curvy lanes rapidly climb up the steep mount, crowned by a Venetian fort. City streets are fresh and dainty, and preserve the proverbial charm of Greece. There are not many places on the Greek mainland that so effortlessly captivate a stranger. Greeks call it Nafplio, probably in honour of Nafnaf the Pig. Unusual for Greece, it was built up by Crusaders on their way to Jaffa and Acre, sculpted by Venetians, Turks, French and Bavarians, ruled by Duke of Athens. Nauplio was for a short while a first capital of independent Greece, but mercifully was spared the grim fate of Athens: it did not become a centre of overcrowded honking urban spread.

It is a good base to scout the plain of Argolis. On its main square, there is an old Venetian building. It houses now the local archaeological museum. Its collection starts with the great Mycenaean civilisation, a child of Minoan civilisation of Crete. This art blossomed not far away, in the walled cities of Mycenae and Tiryns, once ruled by the accursed Atreid kings. It is a period of wonderful free and inspired art, with voluptuous (like Baroque nymphs crowding the ceiling of my hotel room) figurines of goddesses, jolly octopuses (octopi for Jennifer) on the jars, and frescoes reminiscent of Palestinian work in Deir el-Balach. Mycenaeans could read and write, built castles and palaces, carved the magnificent lions above the gate of their capital. But as one continues the tour, all of a sudden one witnesses the great collapse. Art disappears, and its place is taken over by bare geometric forms. Centuries will pass from 12 c BC to 6 c BC, until local inhabitants will regain the developed forms of art, knowledge of writing and sophistication of old.

One feels this lacuna of time while reading Odyssey. Homer composed his anachronistic masterpiece some four hundred years after the collapse, and he did not know that his heroes could write and read, and their princesses did not have to do laundry by themselves. After the collapse, one finds pieces of art strangely similar to our modern creations. In the small museum of Acropolis in Athens, there is a precise copy of Giacometti statuette, made some 2700 years ago. Geometric forms of that period are reproduced now as best examples of modern art. Thus, in the small museum of Nauplio, I found a missing piece to fit into the puzzle. Death of Art is a symptom of civilisation collapse.

For another piece of the puzzle, I travelled to the other end of Europe, to the Basque capital Bilbao, where the great Jewish American family of Guggenheim built a huge museum of modern art. It is probably the biggest building erected in modern Spain, looking like a flagman of the merchant fleet entering the shore of Biscay. Its forms are unique, there are no right angles, and curves are too complicated and defy easy definition. It is a building that intends to impress and it impresses you as a spacecraft on the village street.

Inside, it is less imposing. Some pieces of corrugated iron, video screens, bare geometric forms are being offered as the chef-douvres of the modern art. A New York artist brought here fifteen ton of rusty iron plates, a Japanese artist has a big room where dozens of TV screens show endless emptiness. Four large floors of nothing are surmounted by the fifth floor, displaying the collection of Armani suits. Every piece could be easily interchanged for another one. There is no Rafael of rusty iron, an artist as creator of art disappeared and gave place to the museum curator, the collection owner. It is he who decides what sort of junk will be displayed, whose name will be written under the photo of tinned soup or a dead rat. Only Armani brand reigns supreme, impervious to curators will, or perhaps it is the curators ideal art.

The museum of Modern Art in Bilbao was supposed to contain Gernica, Picassos modern version of the Last Judgement. Instead, it is stuffed with corrugated iron. It is a good place to contemplate the present decay, nay, demise of the European visual art. As good as any, for the example set by Guggenheim is followed everywhere. In Biennale of Venice, Belgians exhibit a row of chairs, Japanese two hundred yards of photo of a cell, Israelis bookshelves with yesteryear cheap books, English trashed old cars. On my way through Milan, I passed by a lorry carrying a dozen of flattened car wrecks to the scrap yard. It could make a good object of art for Biennale, as well as a heap of garbage. I am sure nobody would find it out of place if it would be provided with a name of artist, his country and his media.

In Amsterdam museum I saw a collection of rotten decomposed pig trunks.

A Study in Art II
By Israel Shamir

Part Two

Why did it happen? What is the reason of Jewish success in the field of Modern Art? It is not due to great achievements of Jewish artists: they are quite modest, and despite the PR support of Jewish art collectors, curators and critics, they are well within what could be expected for a fifteen-million-strong wealthy community. Interaction of wealthy Jewish collectors and philanthropists with Jewish critics active in the Jewish-owned media provides us with a partial answer.

Still, the Jews were extremely ill equipped for their conquest of Olympus. For many generations, Jews never entered churches and hardly ever saw paintings. They were conditioned to reject image as part of their rejection of idols. In the course of two thousand year long selection process, visual gifs of Jews were not developed, as opposed to abilities to learn, argue and convince honed to perfection in Talmudic environment. Rejection of Christ this main fountain of creativity is even deeper reason. There is no visual art or poetry outside of God, at best, a godless person can imitate art. For this reason, Jews are, as a rule, poor painters and sculptors. (Chagall and Modigliani embraced Christ, and Chagall made the stained glass of Chartres). While their mastery of word and ideology is very high (well above average of 100, at 130), their average visual ability is only 75, extremely low. One can consider it a scientific proof of no art without Christ. Indeed until recently there were no important Jewish painters or sculptors. The Jewish temple was supposedly built by Phoenicians and Greeks, and it had a very few images. Even illumination of medieval Jewish manuscripts was usually done by non-Jewish artists, who made very obvious errors trying to copy Jewish letters.

Jewish success in the Art world is amazing. If the Olympic Sports committee would consist of handicapped persons, and a fair share of sports commentators would be lame, and even some winners of the games would be lame, we would have reason to be astonished. But probably, looking at it carefully we would find that the main Olympic sport is Run in Bags, or chess.

Visually handicapped Jews created a similar anomaly that of non-visual conceptual art. A piece of conceptual art is describable and explainable. It is a narration. Tracey Emins Unmade bed fully describes the object, while another beauty, Alighiero Boettis sculpture Yearly Lamp, a light bulb that illuminated itself only once every twelve months, is fully described by this description. Preparation of these items places no demand on artistic abilities. They can be done by anybody. Such art is perfectly within Jewish abilities. Moreover, Jews with their good ability to produce ideas and read iconography will surely succeed in it. Thus, the Run in Bags, the kind of sport that began as a new entry into Olympic games, eventually is promoted to the position of an all-important one.

We can easily dismiss demonising talk of the Jews who destroy art in order to break Aryan spirit. Jews bend art to fit their abilities, in order to succeed in this difficult (for them) occupation. Breaking (or not) the Aryan spirit is quite irrelevant for them. While there are wealthy Jews able to buy art and provide for an artist who makes what they like, while there are witty Jews in the media that approve of the art Jews like (one that is easy to tell about), they would create bias in favour of the art they like and understand. But how did they get into this position in the first place? How the lame runners of our example have got their opening into the Olympic committee?

Despite their wealth and media domination, the Jews would not make it, but for a few previous developments.

1. Photography and reproduction. Recently I visited an excellent photo exhibition of Hagia Sophia mosaics, made to the highest standard. The photographs are so good that one has to touch it in order to recognise that these are not real mosaics. But for a strange reason, the photocopies do not inspire. One can look at them all day long but the soul is not stirred. And then, one comes across the real thing, and the heart turns to God.

Photography is to painting as pornography to real women. Both create an illusion of real thing, but leave a lingering emptiness. In the long run, the real thing suffers. Pornography undid many happy unions. Reproduction of art conditioned us to view uninspiring beauty. It is difficult to view a painting of Mona Lisa without instinctively comparing it to its endless reproductions. In a way, the modern art was a botched response to reproductions, for an artist needs to attract attention of blas viewers.

Photography was an important stepping stone to demise of art. Great paintings were reproduced in albums, and caused no great uplifting in the hearts. Purely materialistic vision of the age precluded even to

A Blast at Capitalist Culture
Vanguard founder: 'Time for Bluntness'
==

By Jeff Richgels

October 2, 2003 by the Madison Capital Times

http://www.madison.com/toolbox/index.php?action=printmeref=captimesstoryURL=/captimes/business/stories/57961.php

A titan of American capitalism delivered a stinging
critique of American capitalism in Madison on
Wednesday.

But John Bogle, founder of The Vanguard Group and
father of the index mutual fund, also offered a plan to
fix it as he spoke at the Directors' Summit conference
on corporate governance at UW-Madison.

The fact is, in America today it is high time for
bluntness, said the feisty Bogle, who showed none of
the frailty that might be expected from a 74-year-old
heart transplant recipient.

Reciting the litany of recent corporate scandals - from
Enron to Tyco to WorldCom to the New York Stock
Exchange - Bogle said that in the 1990s our whole
system broke down.

With boards of directors failing to act in the
interests of the shareholders they ostensibly
represent, our system of ownership capitalism became
one of management capitalism, where the profits went
not to shareholders as they should but to executives
receiving outrageously excessive compensation, Bogle
said.

From 1988-2001, he said, workers' compensation
increased 60 percent - just slightly above inflation -
while CEO compensation soared 443 percent.

Little good comes from when the CEO becomes not only
boss of the business but boss of the board as well,
Bogle said. Don't be surprised when the looting
begins.

Even worse, the excessive executive compensation did
not correspond with any appreciable corporate
achievements, he said.

Simply no evidence possibly justifies the outrageous
compensation increases bestowed on corporate leaders,
Bogle roared.

While a few bad apples caused immense harm, their
exposure had a benefit, Bogle said.

We owe a perverse kind of debt to the fallen apples
for illuminating the cracks in the barrel of
capitalism, he said. We're all better off now that
it's out in the open.

While directors may have abdicated their responsibility
in overseeing companies, the owners - shareholders -
have the ultimate responsibility and should have
stepped in.

In America today, shareholders essentially means
institutional investors such as mutual funds and
pension funds: The 100 largest own 56 percent of U.S.
equities, Bogle said.

But they did nothing during the stock market bubble, he
said.

The only sound we heard was the sound of silence,
Bogle said.

And that's because they became a part of the problem,
he added, as evidenced by the scandal uncovered by New
York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer that has engulfed
Milwaukee-based Strong Capital Management, among
others.

As in some of the businesses they owned shares in, the
interests of the managers prevailed at the funds,
rather than the interests of the investors, Bogle said.

Short-term trading and portfolio turnover to produce
fees won out over long-term investing in pursuit of
corporate value, said Bogle, who called the change
from stewardship to salesmanship.

It was not always that way but it became so in the
1990s, he said. I hope the recent scandal helps this
industry return to its proud past.

Bogle urged a return to corporate democracy with
enhanced shareholder rights.

The cause is not lost, he said in laying out eight
ideas for reform: Encouraging corporate citizenship;
clearly separating ownership from management; returning
to a long-term business focus rather than quarter-to-
quarter earnings; fixing the stock option mess; letting
sunlight shine on accounting; bringing back dividends;
reforming the fund industry; and institutions of the
world unite in pursuit of corporate governance.

We have eroded the character of capitalism yet

Chicago City Counsel Condemns PATRIOT ACT

On October 1, the Chicago City Counsel voted to pass a resolution condemning
the USA PATRIOT Act, becoming the largest city in the United States to show
its contempt for the Ashcroft-Congress brand of patriotism.

As reported by attorney Noah Leavitt, with Chicago's Jewish Counsel on Urban
Affairs, Aldermen Helen Shiller (Ward 46), Joe Moore (Ward 49), Freddrenna
Lyle (Ward 6) and Ricardo Munoz (Ward 22) introduced a resolution to the City
Council supporting Chicago's immigrant population and condemning the excesses of
the USA PATRIOT Act. The resolution reaffirms the rights of all people
living within the City under the U.S. Constitution and calls for the City to work
for the repeal of the Act and associated Executive Orders which violate our
fundamental rights and liberties. City Council passed the resolution at this
mornings meeting.

Chicago Arabs and Jews, represented by the Jewish Counsel on Urban Affairs
(JCUA) and the Muslim Civil Rights Center (MCRC), worked together to get the
resolution passed. Said Rasheed Ahmed, President of the MCRC, This is a huge
victory for all people who care about civil rights. As Muslims, we feel the
sting of suspicion and the fear of a knock on our doors. The practice of guilt by
association, perpetrated against American Muslim and Arab-American
communities, undermines the fundamental meaning of the Bill of Rights and sets the
legal
precedence for the same fate for all Americans. The nefarious USA PATRIOT Act
is leading to the creation of a second tier justice system that could be used
against any American for political purposes and weakens the fabric of our
democratic society.

Jane Ramsey, Executive Director of the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs,
shared these. We at JCUA are proud to be counted on the side of people who have
spoken out against this violation of our fundamental rights. As Jews, who are so
familiar with the immigrant experience and the unfortunate suspicions placed
upon outsiders, we understand the need to protect those who are not yet
citizens. We also recognize that the PATRIOT Act threatens the Constitutional
rights and freedoms of all of Americas residents - citizens and non-citizens
alike. Todays PATRIOT Act is reminiscent of other infringements on civil
liberties in Americas history such as the internment of Japanese-Americans during
World War II and the Red hunts of the McCarthy period in the 1950s.

The USA PATRIOT Act compromises the civil liberties of all Americans, but
particularly affects Muslim and Arab-American communities. In Chicago, large
numbers of immigrant workers have been arrested on numerous occasions, including
in raids at O'Hare and Midway airports as well as the Sears Tower. These raids
have led to the detention and deportation of many Latino immigrant airport
workers.

A joint statement released by JCUA and MCRC indicates that violence against
Arabsin Chicago increased from four in the year 2000 to 60 in the year 2001 to
124 last year. The PATRIOT Act, it reasons, poisonsChicago by creating a
climate of xenophobia, distrust, and paranoia. It alienates the very communities
that could provide crucial assistance to our national security and law
enforcement bodies.

Because of the PATRIOT Act's broad scope and its many negative effects,
communities across the country are joining together to voice their opposition.
Three states and more than 160 municipalities from 28 states --approximately 20
million people-- have passed resolutions criticizing the Act. Similar efforts
are underway across the country.

Strange Fruit

By Matt Pacenza
The Village Voice
October 1 - 7, 2003,

http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0340/pacenza.php

MORALES, GUATEMALA--Florinda Lollo Martínez lost her
job so your bananas could stay cheap. And now she's so
desperate to provide food for her family that she's
risking her life to grow corn on a former banana
plantation, even though thugs linked to her former
employer, Fresh Del Monte Produce, have been accused of
murdering eight of her fellow farmers in the past two
years.

A single mother of two young children, Martínez worked
for 12 years at the Del Monte packing plant here, where
union workers earned up to $10 a day cutting green
bananas into bunches, cleaning them, and packing them
into cardboard boxes, for supermarkets in the eastern
United States. That's good pay by Guatemalan standards,
and along with it Del Monte, through its subsidiary
BANDEGUA, provided subsidized housing in a local
factory town called Tikal Sebol. The banana giant also
let workers like Martínez grow corn and other
vegetables on unused land.

But in 1999, Del Monte moved to cut costs in
northeastern Guatemala, firing Martínez and 917 other
members of the 4,000-strong Izabal Banana Workers
Union. The unpopular move violated the company's
contract with its laborers, and international outcry
forced Del Monte to give some of the jobs back--but at
lower wages, with fewer benefits, no housing, and no
fields to plant food on for their families. Martínez
and hundreds of others refused Del Monte's offer.

On October 11, 2001, with pressure to feed their
families mounting, some of the former banana workers
decided to occupy nearly 1,000 acres of Del Monte land,
known as the Lankin farm.

I had nowhere else to go, nothing to do, says
Martínez when asked why she decided to join the illegal
invasion. My kids were hungry.

Next month will mark the second anniversary of their
uprising, with Martínez and several hundred other
campesinos still on the old Del Monte plantation,
living in what remains of their Tikal Sebol homes and
planting subsistence crops.

For Del Monte and BANDEGUA, the Lankin campesinos are
more than just an irritant; standing by while peasants
occupy valuable farmland sets a bad precedent. So the
multinational corporation, based in Coral Gables,
Florida, has moved swiftly to distance itself from the
conflict--and to get rid of the peasants.

Soon after the occupation began, Del Monte sold the
Lankin land for perhaps a tenth of its market value to
a group of notorious local thugs. Called ganaderos, or
cattle ranchers, these gunmen have often served to
control dissent in the steamy Izabal region. Local
advocates say what happened when Del Monte turned its
back on its former workers was predictable: Since the
occupation began, they claim, the ganaderos have shot
and killed eight Lankin farmers--three in the last six
months.

The campesinos can do little in their own country to
seek justice. They can only hope their global allies
will be able to pressure Del Monte in the United
States. Lawyers with the International Labor Rights
Fund are already trying, helping exiled union leaders
sue the company in a Florida court under the 214-year-
old Alien Tort Claims Act. They're accusing Del Monte
of responsibility for violence in their 1999 effort to
quash the union, known in Spanish as SITRABI.

Meanwhile, activists both from Guatemala and the U.S.
are working in the community, investigating the Lankin
murders.

Ask the banana workers why some 500 people remain here
despite the killings, and the answer is always the
same--if they didn't, they might starve. It's not just a
rhetorical response. The World Food Program estimated
last year that 60,000 Guatemalan children were
suffering from acute malnutrition, with 6,000 close to
death.

LossDoctors in L.A. and elsewhere have identified at
least48 cases of deafness tied to prolonged misuse ofVicodin and other
comparable prescription medicines. By LINDA MARSA,
TIMES HEALTH WRITERA powerful and potentially addictive painkiller
usedby millions of Americans is causing rapid hearingloss, even
deafness, in some patients who are misusingthe drug, according to hearing
researchers in LosAngeles and elsewhere. So far, at least 48 patients
have been identified bydoctors at the House Ear Institute in Los Angeles
andseveral other medical centers who have treatedpatients with sudden
hearing loss. The hearingproblems appear to be limited to people who
abuseVicodin and other chemically comparable prescriptiondrugs by taking
exceptionally high dosages for severalmonths or more, doctors
said.Vicodin, one of the most commonly prescribedpainkillers, is
frequently used improperly."This has become such a popular drug of
abuse," saysDr. John W. House, president of the House Institute inLos
Angeles, one of the nation's leading centers ofhearing-related
research.Actress Melanie Griffith and Cindy McCain, wife ofU.S. Sen
John McCain, have acknowledged their struggleto overcome their addiction to
Vicodin, which theyboth were prescribed for severe back pain. But
it's not just notables who are getting hooked.Christina Jaeger of
Sherman Oaks was prescribedVicodin in 1993 after a back injury. Gradually,
shegot addicted. She would wean herself off Vicodin forbrief periods,
only to relapse when doctors continuedto prescribe the drug for her
recurring pain. Then, earlier this year, the 36-year-old model
andfitness trainer suddenly began to lose her hearing. When her doctors
couldn't explain what was happening, she went to the House Institute, where
specialistsconcluded that Vicodin was to blame. Jaegerimmediately
entered a treatment program to kick herVicodin habit. But it was too late.
By the time shecompleted the program, she was deaf."If I had only
known, I would have tried anything tostop," Jaeger said. "The lack of
information is whatI'm most furious about. That, and the proclivity
ofdoctors to write prescriptions for Vicodin like
it'scandy."Some experts believe that doctors' willingness
toliberally prescribe potent narcotic painkillers may becontributing to
the rise in abuse.A government survey found that more than 1.6
millionAmericans began using painkillers like Vicodin in 1998for
nonmedical reasons, up from fewer than 500,000 in1990. A new U.S. survey on
drug use due out in a fewweeks will likely find "an upswing" in improper use
ofprescription pain drugs, said Frank J. Vocci, directorof treatment
research and development at the NationalInstitute on Drug
Abuse.Vicodin, a synthetic opiate that is a chemical cousinof heroin
and morphine, has long been known to doctorsas a potentially addictive
medication. "As soon asVicodin hit the market, there was a steady stream
ofaddicts," said Dr. Drew Pinsky, medical director forthe chemical
dependency program at Las EncinasHospital in Pasadena. "It's such a huge
problemalready that I don't know how much bigger it
couldbe."Researchers at the House Institute were among thefirst
to connect Vicodin use with sudden hearing loss. They now have identified 29
people who heavily abusedthe painkiller and who subsequently suffered a
suddenhearing loss; 16 of those were diagnosed in the lasttwo years.
UCLA scientists said they have seen anadditional 14 patients with
opiate-inducing hearingloss, mostly from overuse of Vicodin, and other
earexperts around the country report seeing at least fivemore of these
cases.Dr. Richard Wiet, a professor of otology atNorthwestern
University, said he began noticing casesof hearing loss tied to Vicodin use

Poll Shows Drop in Confidence on Bush Skill in
Handling Crises

By Todd S.Purdum and Janet Elder

The New York Times
October 3, 2003
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/10/03/national/03POLL.html?pagewanted=printposition=

The public's confidence in President Bush's ability to
deal wisely with an international crisis has slid
sharply over the past five months, the latest New York
Times/CBS News Poll has found. And a clear majority are
also uneasy about his ability to make the right
decisions on the nation's economy.

I don't feel George W. Bush has a grasp on what the
public is really interested in. I wasn't happy about
the invasion in Iraq. We shouldn't have attacked before
anything was proven. There seem to be no nuclear
weapons. Right now he is trying to rally everyone
around to the cause and give money to rebuild Iraq. But
why should other countries kick in cash when he didn't
wait until the U.N. said we're behind you? The other
countries don't believe he has the leadership skills he
should have.

Mary Preble, 46, a registered nurse and a Texas
Republican Over all, the poll found, Americans are for
the first time more critical than not of Mr. Bush's
ability to handle both foreign and domestic problems,
and a majority say the president does not share their
priorities. Thirteen months before the 2004 election, a
solid majority of Americans say the country is
seriously on the wrong track, a classic danger sign for
incumbents, and only about half of Americans approve of
Mr. Bush's overall job performance. That is roughly the
same as when Mr. Bush took office after the razor-close
2000 election.

But more than 6 in 10 Americans still say the president
has strong qualities of leadership, more than 5 in 10
say he has more honesty and integrity than most people
in public life and 6 in 10 credit him with making the
country safer from terrorist attack.

By contrast, the Democratic presidential contenders
remain largely unknown, and nearly half of Americans --
and a like number of registered voters -- say the
Democrats have no clear plan of their own for the
country.

A summer of continuing attacks on American soldiers in
Iraq, the failure so far to find weapons of mass
destruction there and Mr. Bush's recent request for $87
billion to pay for military operations and
reconstruction in Iraq and Afghanistan have taken a
toll on public support for his administration's Iraq
policy and on views of his ability to handle such
issues in general.

The poll found that just 45 percent of Americans now
have confidence in Mr. Bush's ability to deal wisely
with an international crisis, down sharply from 66
percent in April, and half now say they are uneasy
about his approach. Nearly 9 in 10 Americans say the
war in Iraq is still going on, and 6 in 10 say the
United States should not spend as much on the effort as
Mr. Bush has sought. Three-quarters of Americans,
including a majority of Republicans, say the
administration has yet to clearly explain how long
American troops will have to stay in Iraq, or how much
it will cost to rebuild the country.

I am very uneasy because of the war, said Joyce
Austin, 69, a retired nurse's aide in Readstown, Wis.,
who was reinterviewed after the poll was conducted. I
don't think the Bush administration had a good plan for
ending the war, and for what was going to happen
afterward. I don't think they realized how much it was
going to cost. Mrs. Austin paused and added, Maybe
they knew and just didn't tell us.

The nationwide telephone poll of 981 adults has a
margin of sampling error of plus or minus three
percentage points. The poll, taken Sunday through
Wednesday, was in progress when the Justice Department
announced that it would investigate accusations that
someone in the White House may have leaked the name of
an undercover C.I.A.

Why did the Justice Department delay its directive to not destroy phone and

[CTRL] Leak of Agent's Name Causes Exposure of CIA Front Firm

2003-10-04 Thread William Shannon
-Caveat Lector-
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A40012-2003Oct3_2.html

Leak of Agent's Name Causes Exposure of CIA Front Firm
By Walter Pincus and Mike Allen
Washington Post Staff Writers
Saturday, October 4, 2003; Page A03

The leak of a CIA operative's name has also exposed the identity of a CIA front company, potentially expanding the damage caused by the original disclosure, Bush administration officials said yesterday.

The company's identity, Brewster-Jennings Associates, became public because it appeared in Federal Election Commission records on a form filled out in 1999 by Valerie Plame, the case officer at the center of the controversy, when she contributed $1,000 to Al Gore's presidential primary campaign.

After the name of the company was broadcast yesterday, administration officials confirmed that it was a CIA front. They said the obscure and possibly defunct firm was listed as Plame's employer on her W-2 tax forms in 1999 when she was working undercover for the CIA. Plame's name was first published July 14 in a newspaper column by Robert D. Novak that quoted two senior administration officials. They were critical of her husband, former ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV, for his handling of a CIA mission that undercut President Bush's claim that Iraq had sought uranium from the African nation of Niger for possible use in developing nuclear weapons.

The Justice Department began a formal criminal investigation of the leak Sept. 26.

The inadvertent disclosure of the name of a business affiliated with the CIA underscores the potential damage to the agency and its operatives caused by the leak of Plame's identity. Intelligence officials have said that once Plame's job as an undercover operative was revealed, other agency secrets could be unraveled and her sources might be compromised or endangered.

A former diplomat who spoke on condition of anonymity said yesterday that every foreign intelligence service would run Plame's name through its databases within hours of its publication to determine if she had visited their country and to reconstruct her activities.

"That's why the agency is so sensitive about just publishing her name," the former diplomat said.

FEC rules require donors to list their employment. Plame used her married name, Valerie E. Wilson, and listed her employment as an "analyst" with Brewster-Jennings Associates. The document establishes that Plame has worked undercover within the past five years. The time frame is one of the standards used in making determinations about whether a disclosure is a criminal violation of the Intelligence Identities Protection Act.

It could not be learned yesterday whether other CIA operatives were associated with Brewster-Jennings.

Also yesterday, the nearly 2,000 employees of the White House were given a Tuesday deadline to scour their files and computers for any records related to Wilson or contacts with journalists about Wilson. The broad order, in an e-mail from White House counsel Alberto R. Gonzales, directed them to retain records "that relate in any way to former U.S. Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson, his trip to Niger in February 2002, or his wife's purported relationship with the Central Intelligence Agency."

White House employees received the e-mailed directive at 12:45 p.m., with an all-capitalized subject line saying, "Important Follow-Up Message From Counsel's Office." By 5 p.m. on Tuesday, employees must turn over copies of relevant electronic records, telephone records, message slips, phone logs, computer records, memos, and diaries and calendar entries.

The directive notes that lawyers in the counsel's office are attorneys for the president in his official capacity and that they cannot provide personal legal advice to employees.

For some officials, the task is a massive one. Some White House officials said they had numerous conversations with Wilson that had nothing to do with his wife, so the directive is seen as a heavy burden at a time when many of the president's aides already feel beleaguered.

Officials at the Pentagon and State Department also have been asked to retain records related to the case. Secretary of State Colin L. Powell said yesterday: "We are doing our searches. . . . I'm not sure what they will be looking for or what they wish to contact us about, but we are anxious to be of all assistance to the inquiry."

In another development, FBI agents yesterday began attempts to interview journalists who may have had conversations with government sources about Plame and Wilson. It was not clear how many journalists had been contacted. The FBI has interviewed Plame, ABC News reported.

Wilson and his wife have hired Washington lawyer Christopher Wolf to represent them in the matter.

The couple has directed him to take a preliminary look at claims they might be able to make against people they believe have impugned their character, a source said.

The Most Insidious of Traitors
By William Rivers Pitt
t r u t h o u t | Perspective
Tuesday 30 September 2003

"Even though I'm a tranquil guy now at this stage of my life, I have nothing but contempt and anger for those who betray the trust by exposing the name of our sources. They are, in my view, the most insidious of traitors."
-- George Herbert Walker Bush, 1999

Karl Rove, senior political advisor to George W. Bush, is a very powerful man. That is not to say he has never been in trouble. Rove was fired from the 1992 Bush Sr. campaign for trashing Robert Mosbacher, Jr., who was the chief fundraiser for the campaign and an avowed Bush loyalist. Rove accomplished this trashing of Mosbacher by planting a negative story with columnist Bob Novak. The campaign figured out that Karl had done the dirty deed, and he was given his walking papers.

Demonstrably, Rove is back in the saddle again. The January 2003 edition of Esquire magazine carried an article by Ron Suskind which quoted comments from John DiIulio, a domestic policy advisor to the White House who had just retired from his post. On October 24, DiIulio had sent a letter to Suskind describing what he had seen while working for the Bush administration. The meat of the letter described an administration far, far more interested in raw political triangulation and ruthless spin than in actual policy and government functionality. Some excerpts from DiIulio's letter:

"Some are inclined to blame the high political-to-policy ratios of this administration on Karl Rove...some staff members, senior and junior, are awed and cowed by Karl's real or perceived powers. They self-censor lots for fear of upsetting him, and, in turn, few of the president's top people routinely tell the president what they really think if they think that Karl will be brought up short in the bargain. Karl is enormously powerful, maybe the single most powerful person in the modern, post-Hoover era ever to occupy a political advisor post near the Oval Office."

Even a casual political observer would have trouble missing the fact that this is one of the sharpest political outfits ever to reside in the Oval Office. Bush's team is a unified wall, cemented to their message-of-the-day, and they have done very well for themselves because of this. All of this can be laid at the feet of Karl Rove, the senior political advisor to George W. Bush. According to DiIulio, the preeminence of political considerations within this administration is so complete that any and all policy considerations or contemplation of actual issues are not so much in the back seat as they are in the trunk below the spare tire and the jack. This, again, can be laid at the feet of Mr. Rove.

All of Washington and the country has been buzzing for the last few days over a report that the CIA has asked the Justice Department to investigate the White House regarding a matter of important national security. The wife of a former ambassador named Joseph Wilson, it has been alleged, was 'outed' as an active CIA agent to columnist Robert Novak by this White House in an act of political revenge.

Joseph Wilson was the man dispatched to Niger in February of 2002 by the CIA, after Vice President Dick Cheney asked CIA to figure out whether there was any substance to the charge that Iraq was attempting to procure uranium "yellow cake" from that nation for the purpose of starting a nuclear weapons program. Ambassador Wilson went, investigated, and returned eight days later to state flatly that the evidence was garbage. He has claimed since that his analysis was one of three intelligence reports debunking the Niger story. Ambassador Wilson told this to Cheney's office, the CIA, the State Department, and the National Security Council. Despite the fact that Wilson made it clear that these allegations were untrue - it was revealed that the 'evidence' to support the Niger uranium charge was a pile of crudely forged documents - George W. Bush used the Niger uranium evidence dramatically in his 2003 State of the Union address.

In July, Ambassador Wilson went very public, criticizing the White House for using evidence to support war that they knew was patently false. One week later, Robert Novak reported that Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame, was a CIA operative. As it turns out, two senior White House officials cold-called six different journalists and informed them of Valerie Plame's status as a CIA agent, according to an anonymous administration official quoted by the Washington Post. None of the journalists ran the story. That same administration official was quoted about these revelations as saying, "Clearly, it was meant purely and simply for revenge." Joseph Wilson likewise charges that this act was done as an act of revenge for his vocal criticism of George W. Bush and the administration's actions leading up to the Iraq war. Specifically, he views Karl Rove as being

Does A Felon Rove The White House?
by Amy Goodman, Jeremy Scahill and the Staff of Democracy Now!

Dissident Voice
September 30, 2003
First Published in Democracy Now!

Allegations are swirling that Karl Rove, senior political adviser to President George W. Bush, may have committed a felony by blowing the cover of a CIA operative. CIA Director George Tenet has called on the Justice Department to investigate but the White House said Monday that President George W. Bush has no plans to ask his staff members whether they played a role. And what makes this story even more remarkable is how seriously the Bush family has viewed outing intelligence operatives in the past.

The man at the center of this firestorm is Joseph Wilson, the retired U.S. diplomat who debunked the White Houses key evidence that Saddam Hussein was rebuilding his nuclear program.

Two weeks ago Democracy Now! aired Wilsons comments before a suburban Seattle audience that he believes Bushs closest aide, Karl Rove, told reporters that Wilsons wife was a CIA agent.

At the forum Wilson declared, At the end of the day, it's of keen interest to me to see whether or not we can get Karl Rove frog-marched out of White House in handcuffs. Wilson added, And trust me when I use that name, I measure my words.

Wilson told Democracy Now!, I have reason to believe that it was the political office that at a minimum confirmed it and the political office was Karl RoveIt was a reporter who told me it was Karl Rove and thats as far as I want to go right now.

The whole scandal began in July a week after Wilson went public in an op-ed piece in the New York Times saying he was the diplomat sent by the Bush Administration to Niger to investigate whether Saddam Hussein tried to buy uranium from the African country. His findings: the accusations were baseless.

Wilson was not alone. The US ambassador to Niger, Barbro Owens-Kirkpatrick, knew of the allegations of uranium sales to Iraq and had already debunked them in her reports back to Washington. Wilsons conclusions also coincided with those of Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the US Armed Forces four-star Marine Corps General, Carlton Fulford, who had also researched the matter on the ground in Niger. Wilson felt he had authoritatively debunked the Niger rumor and the matter was settled.

But the lie refused to die. In January 2003, Bush made his famous 16 word line in his State of the Union address: "The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa."

In July, soon after Wilson blew the whistle in The New York Times, the White House was forced to admit that the accusation should not have been included in the State of the Union.

A few days later, conservative columnist Robert Novak wrote a column in which he cited two senior administration officials and stated that Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame, was a CIA operative dealing with weapons of mass destruction.

In an extensive interview on Democracy Now!, Wilson said that the outing of his wife as an alleged CIA operative and other attempts to discredit him are clearly intended to intimidate others from coming forward.

But its not just intimidation; its a felony. Until now, a crime the Bush family has taken very seriously. According to Ray McGovern, a retired CIA analyst who worked under Bush Sr. at both the CIA and the White House, The Intelligence Identities Protection Act was made draconian, it was made very, very specific, automatic penalties that would accrue to both officials and non-officialsanyone who knowingly disclosed the identity of a CIA agent or officer. The penalty: fines of up to $50,000 and imprisonment of up to 10 years.

Many believe the law was passed in direct response to former CIA agent Philip Agees blowing the whistle on CIA dirty tricks in his book Inside the Company. George H.W. Bush, who was vice-president when the law was passed, said some of the criticism of the Agency ruined secret U.S. clandestine operations in foreign countries.

So seriously did the Bushes take the crime of exposing CIA operatives that Barbara Bush, in her memoirs, accused Agee of blowing the cover of the CIA Station Chief in Greece, Richard Welch, who was assassinated outside his Athens residence in 1975. Agee sued the former first lady and Mrs. Bush withdrew the statement from additional printings of her book. Still, at a celebration marking the fiftieth anniversary of the CIA, the elder Bush again singled out Agee in his remarks, calling him a traitor to our country.

David MacMichael worked as a CIA analyst at the time the law was passed. He told Democracy Now!: If former President Bush could define Philip Agee as a traitor for exposing the identities of serving intelligence officers, if his sons political advisor has done the sameit is a very serious felony under the current Act.

(If in fact it was Karl

REBUILDING

Questions are Raised on Awarding of Contracts in Iraq
By PATRICK E. TYLER and RAYMOND BONNER

BAGHDAD, Iraq, Oct. 3 Last month the Iraqi Governing Council questioned why the American occupation authority had issued a $20 million contract to buy new revolvers and Kalashnikov rifles for the Iraqi police when the United States military was confiscating tens of thousands of weapons every month from Saddam Hussein's abandoned arsenals.

On Wednesday the Iraqi council, in a testy exchange with the occupation administrator, L. Paul Bremer III, challenged an American decision to spend $1.2 billion to train 35,000 Iraqi police officers in Jordan when such training could be done in Iraq for a fraction of the cost. Germany and France have offered to provide such training free.

These decisions are being questioned by Iraqi officials as Congress is also seeking to examine how the American occupation authority and the military are spending billions of dollars here. Iraqi officials and businessmen charge that millions of dollars in contracts are being awarded without competitive bidding, some of them to former cronies of Mr. Hussein's government.

There is no transparency, said Mahmoud Othman, a Kurdish member of the Governing Council, and something has to be done about it.

There is mismanagement right and left, and I think we have to sit with Congress face to face to discuss this. A lot of American money is being wasted, I think. We are victims and the American taxpayers are victims.

A number of businessmen say they believe it is necessary to pay kickbacks to win contracts. A spokesman for one of the largest American corporations awarding subcontracts here, Bechtel, said his company had neither paid any kickbacks nor had been approached by Iraqis seeking to pay kickbacks. He said Bechtel made all of its contract information available on its Web site and at offices in Baghdad and Basra. A check of the Web site on Friday found no information, only a notice that the site was under construction.

The lack of transparency and competition, Governing Council members said in interviews, may be encouraging corruption. They said they believed that many contracts had been inflated beyond the reasonable cost for the work, creating opportunities for kickbacks between prime contractors and subcontractors.

One council member, Naseer K. Chadirji, said: As the Governing Council we are in a very weak legal position. We don't have the right to investigate these contracts.

He added, I don't have the evidence, but I think there is corruption. This is a common grievance that people tell me.

An Iraqi executive, who made millions of dollars as an insider under the Hussein government and would not allow his name to be used, said a relative outside Iraq had asserted that a Bechtel executive was looking to become a silent partner in an Iraqi company that would be favored with subcontracts from Bechtel.

A senior Bechtel official in Iraq, Clifford George Mumm, said that his company would fire immediately anyone who tried to do such a thing and that he did not believe that any Bechtel executive would engage in the kind of behavior described.

Mr. Mumm said there had been no kickbacks on the 105 subcontracts Bechtel had signed with Iraqi firms.

Asked about Iraqi assertions that Bechtel and other major American companies were awarding contracts to Iraqis who had grown rich under Mr. Hussein, Mr. Mumm said all of the Iraqi businesses that received Bechtel subcontracts were vetted by the occupation authority under Mr. Bremer.

The largest and most prominent Iraqi subcontractor that has emerged belongs to the Bunnia family, which grew immensely wealthy under the former government and was known for

While walking down the street one day, George "Dubya"
Bush is shot by a disgruntled NRA member. His soul
arrives in heaven and he is met by St. Peter at the
Pearly Gates.

"Welcome to Heaven," says St. Peter. "Before you settle
in, it seems there is a problem: We seldom see a
Republican around these parts, so we're not sure what
to do with you."

"No problem, just let me in; I'm a believer." says
Dubya.

"I'd like to just let you in, but I have orders from
the Man Himself: He says you have to spend one day in
Hell and one day in Heaven. Then you must choose where
you'll live for eternity."

"But, I've already made up my mind; I want to be in
Heaven."

"I'm sorry, but we have our rules." And with that, St.
Peter escorts him to an elevator and he goes down,
down, down, all the way to Hell. The doors open and he
finds himself in the middle of a lush golf course; the
sun is shining in a cloudless sky, the temperature a
perfect 72 degrees. In the distance is a beautiful
clubhouse. Standing in front of it his dad...and
thousands of other Republicans who had helped him out
over the years.. Karl Rove, Dick Cheney, Jerry Falwell
. The whole of the "Right" was there ... everyone
laughing ... happy casually but expensively
dressed. They run to greet him, hug him, and reminisce
about the good times they had getting rich at expense
of the "suckers and peasants". They play a friendly
game of golf and then dine on lobster and caviar.

The Devil himself comes up to Bush with a frosty drink,
"Have a Margarita and relax, Dubya!"

"Uh, I can't drink no more, I took a pledge," says
Junior, dejectedly. "This is Hell, son: you can drink
and eat all you want and not worry, and it just gets
better from there!"

Dubya takes the drink and finds himself liking the
Devil, who he thinks is a really very friendly guy who
tells funny jokes and pulls hilarious nasty pranks.
kind of like a Yale Skull and Bones brother with real
horns. They are having such a great time that, before
he realizes it, it's time to go. Everyone gives him a
big hug and waves as Bush steps on the elevator and
heads upward.

When the elevator door reopens, he is in Heaven again
and St. Peter is waiting for him. "Now it's time to
visit Heaven," the old man says, opening the gate.

So for 24 hours Bush is made to hang out with a bunch
of honest, good- natured people who enjoy each other's
company, talk about things other than money, and treat
each other decently. Not a nasty prank or frat boy joke
among them; no fancy country clubs and, while the food
tastes great, it's not caviar or lobster. And these
people are all poor, he doesn't see anybody he knows,
and he isn't even treated like someone special! Worst
of all, to Dubya, Jesus turns out to be some kind of
Jewish hippie with his endless 'peace' and 'do unto
others' jive.

"Whoa," he says uncomfortably to himself, "Pat
Robertson never prepared me for this!"

The day done, St. Peter returns and says, "Well, then,
you've spent a day in Hell and a day in Heaven. Now
choose where you want to live for eternity." With the
'Jeopardy' theme playing softly in the background,
Dubya reflects for a minute, then answers: "Well, I
would never have thought I'd say this -- I mean, Heaven
has been delightful and all -- but I really think I
belong in Hell with my friends."

So Saint Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes
down, down, down, all the way to Hell.

The doors of the elevator open and he is in the middle
of a barren scorched earth covered with garbage and
toxic industrial waste.. kind of like Houston. He is
horrified to see all of his friends, dressed in rags
and chained together, picking up the trash and putting
it in black bags. They are groaning and moaning in
pain, faces and hands black with grime. The Devil comes
over to Dubya and puts an arm around his shoulder.

"I don't understand," stammers a shocked Dubya,
"Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and a
clubhouse and we ate lobster and caviar... drank booze.
We screwed around and had a great time. Now there's
just a wasteland full of garbage and everybody looks
miserable!"

The Devil looks at him, smiles slyly, and purrs,
"Yesterday we were campaigning; today you voted for
us."

Radio Host Tells of Incident With Actor - A campaign aide says Schwarzenegger has no recollection of alleged encounter in the 1970s. By Megan Garvey October 3, 2003
A well-known nationally syndicated radio host on Thursday publicly described being groped and propositioned by Arnold Schwarzenegger more than 20 years ago, when she was starting in the business and he was promoting his film "Pumping Iron." Joy Browne, a psychologist whose advice program is syndicated to nearly 200 stations nationwide, described on the radio an encounter with Schwarzenegger that took place during an interview about the documentary, which was released in 1977. Schwarzenegger fondled her legs under the table during the interview, she said. Then, she said, he left his Gold American Express card in the studio and insisted that Browne personally return it to his hotel room. According to Browne, who was in her late 20s at the time, she took her young daughter along to return the credit card. Schwarzenegger, she said, answered the door in tight pants, wearing no shirt. He had champagne. He asked her if her daughter could "take a walk for a while?" She declined. Rob Stutzman, a Schwarzenegger spokesman, said Thursday that the candidate had no recollection of the alleged incident.

[CTRL] NAZI America?

2003-10-04 Thread John Miller
-Caveat Lector-

Are the NAZI running America?
Adolf Hitler, the NAZI killing machine.

Case White was a most
secret German document, and only five copies were made, and this top secret
directive of April 1939, meant war, that is World War Two, when over 50 million
were to die, and the Case White document represents all those
killed.
SUPREME
COMMANDER OF THE ARMED FORCES MOST SECRET
Berlin, August 31,1939
Directive No.1 for the Conduct of the War
1. Now that all the political possibilities of disposing by peaceful
means of a situation on the Eastern Frontier which is intolerable for Germany
are exhausted, I have determined a solution by
force.
2. The attack on Poland is to be carried out in accordance with the
preparations made for Case White with the alterations which result, where the
Army is concerned, from the fact that it has in the meantime almost completed
it. dispositions; Allotment of tasks and the operational target remain
unchanged.
Date of attack: September 1, 1939.
Time of attack: 4:45 A.M.

The German Generals were desperately waiting each day during August 1939
for the Directive No.1 document to be signed by Adolf Hitler, which the Fuhrer
did at about noon time on August 31st 1939, nearly 17 hours before
the commencement of World War Two.
On August
31st 1939, some 1,500,000 German troops move into position and await
orders. Hitler creates the desired provocation, code name Canned Goods. At
noon that day, some German troops masquerading as Polish soldiers invade a
German radio station and so Hitler considered such provocation as an act of
war.
The Second World War caused the death of 47,200,000 (is Darkness at
17,700,000 x 3/8). Including the degradation and murder of some 5,750,000 Jews.
See WWII Statistics http://www.angelfire.com/ct/ww2europe/stats.html
Counting from American Independence at 3:01am Day, on
July 4th 1776, that is day of the year 184.126 days and divided by
365.242198 days + year is 1776.504121 to noon on August 31st 1939,
that is year 1939.663942 is 163.1598214 years.

And counting down from the Time Marker of September
11th 2001, that is day 253 and year 2001.692691, to noon August
31st 1939 is 62.02874801 years.
So a ratio of 163.1598214/62.02874801 years is
2.630390370.
And next to
the Statue of Liberty the Statue of Horus and Liberty
Enlightening the World
The height of the Miss Liberty statue from base to
torch is 151 feet 1 inch or 1,813 inches
And Miss Liberty stands on a pedestal 154 feet or
1,848 inches high.
Total height 305 feet 1 inch or 3,661 inches. And so
3,661 + 3,661 is Horus at 6,100 + the Skull and Bones flag at 611 + 611. So
the Statue of Liberty can be considered as representing Horus wearing the
mantle of Lucifer, the emblem of the Order of the
Illuminati.
And the reference number for the falcon masked
Ancient Egyptian god Horus, the merciless killer of the sky is 61, and 61 is
made of the Serpent at 17 with eagles wings at 44.

So to the USA NAZI calculation.

The Hitler American Ratio of 2.630390370 x Miss
Liberty at 1813 inches x the pedestal for Miss Liberty at 1848 inches and
squared x Pi is 4 x 6.10e+13, that is Horus, the merciless killer of the New
York sky.
So the United States Miss Liberty was used as the
key to start the Second World War.
What more can be said?

The NAZI do surely run America.
But of course the United States Skeptics will stay
blind, so I await even more innocent blood to be on their hands, for the
Skeptics have failed miserably to come against evil on a vast scale, so I blame
them for the coming downfall of the United States of
America.
Sad,
John D. Miller
PS

And the USA
likes to use Miss Liberty when organizing war.
Yesterday, 7
December 1941-a date which will live in infamy-the United States of America was
suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of
Japan President
Roosevelt
AIR RAID PEARL
HARBOR. THIS IS NOT DRILL.
7:55 A.M. Hawaii Standard Time December 7th 1941

So to number
crunching the horrific event of December 7th 1941.
First to the
Statue of Liberty that is Liberty Enlightening the World I suggest
represents the Statue of Horus
Statue from base to torch is 151 feet 1 inch or
151.083334 feet or 1,813 inches
Pedestal 154
feet or 1,848 inches.
Total height
305 feet 1 inch or 305.083334 feet or 3,661 inches
And the
diabolical reference number 3,661 + 3,661 is equivalent to Horus at 6,100 + the
Skull and Bones flag at 611 + 611. So the Statue of Liberty can be
considered as representing Horus wearing the mantle of Lucifer, the emblem of
the Order of the Illuminati the banner that flies over the Gates of Hell.

Now my number
crunching and revelations has shown me that a fundamental reference number for
Satan, the Adversary of Humankind, the Deceiver, is emphatically 155.

And counting
from 12:05am, that is five minutes after midnight Hawaii Standard Time on
December 7th 1941 to a moment past

Bush Ideologues vs. Big Oil
The Iraq Game Gets Even
Stranger
By ROGER BURBACH
The
mounting criticism of Bush's Iraqi policies now extends to key business allies
of the administration. "The big oil companies were not enthusiastic about the
Iraqi war," says Fareed Mohamedi of PFC Energy, a consultancy firm based in
Washington D.C. that advises petroleum firms. "Corporations like Exxon-Mobile
and Chevron-Texaco want stability, and this is not what Bush is providing in
Iraq and the Gulf region," adds Mohamedi. The specific interests of big oil
appear to have been trumped by the ideologues in the Bush administration. As
Chris Toensing of the Middle East Research and Information Project (MERIP)
argues, "administration neoconservatives like Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul
Wolfowitz are dreamers driven more by ideology than by concrete material
interests. They believe the United States is virtuous and has a mission to
remain indefinitely as the world's sole superpower.
They don't really care about specific oil interests. Iraq
became the focal point for their dreams so the United States could exert
unparalleled power in reordering the Gulf, the Middle East and the
world."
Other analysts of the Iraqi war like Phyllis Bennis of the
Institute for Policy Studies see the neoconservatives as tightly aligned with
"unreconstructed cold warriors" like Vice-President Dick Cheney and Defense
Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. "They represent the interests of the defense industry
and want to see ever expanding military budgets for the world's only
superpower."
Toensing concurs with this view, noting "Cheney and
Rumsfeld are tight with the defense industry. They see control of oil as merely
part of a much bigger geo-strategic vision that involves a reliance on military
power to dominate the world. By controlling the Gulf and the Middle East the
United States gains leverage over countries that are more dependent on the Gulf
for oil, like China and Europe."
The problem for the ideologues and militarists is that
their dreams of forging a new world order by invading Iraq are contradicted by
reality. As Toensing notes "the war planners thought they could simply lop off
Saddam Hussein and his Baathist party in Iraq and install their own hand picked
rulers." Ahmad Chalabi and other exiled Iraqi's grouped together in the Iraqi
National Congress convinced the Pentagon that "liberated" Iraqis would welcome
US troops with flowers and rice when they took Baghdad. Of course as we now know
from the growing toll of US causalities in Iraq, Chalabi and his cronies duped
the Bush administration into believing what they wanted to hear.
Fareed Mohamedi of PFC Energy asserts that the large
petroleum companies had a more realistic approach to securing their interests in
the Gulf region and the Arab world. "Big oil told the Cheney Task Force on
Energy Policy in 2001 that they wanted the US sanctions lifted on Libya and Iran
so they could gain access to their oil supplies. As far back as 1990, they were
even arguing that the United States should cut a deal with Saddam because he had
given signals he was willing to let US oil companies into Iraq." Cheney of
course ignored the arguments of the big oil companies. Sanctions are currently
being lifted against Libya, but this has more to do with the Libyans working out
a deal with European governments over the downing of the Pan Am passenger jet in
Lockerbie, Scotland in 1988 than with any initiatives emanating from
Washington.
The Bush administration is of course intent on seeing that
US defense and business interests in general benefit from the occupation of
Iraq. While the big US oil companies are not yet engaged in Iraq, "down stream"
energy contractors like Cheney's former company Halliburton are being awarded
multi-billion dollar contracts that are underwritten by American tax payers. In
mid September the US appointed administrator of post war Iraq, J. Paul Bremmer,
announced that the country would be thrown open to free enterprise and foreign
investors.
Here again it appears that the ideologues of the Bush
administration will wreck havoc on Iraq. As Chris Toensing notes, "the
neo-liberal belief in the free market economy will greatly expand the huge
unemployed pool of labor in Iraq, a major breeding ground for the militant
opposition to the US occupation of the country." A large portion of the
factories and businesses in Saddam's Iraq were state owned. Many of them will be
permanently shuttered under Bremmer's free market plan, and thousands of jobs
will be slashed in the enterprises that are sold

 By
John ChuckmanYellowTimes.org Columnist (Canada)
(YellowTimes.org) I do get tired of reading claims that oil is
the reason why Mr. Bush wants to attack Iraq. Perhaps commentators
pick oil because it seems to give clarity where there is so little,
evoking the slightly romantic image of 19th century troops in pith
helmets, scrambling for colonial resources.
I don't want to be guilty of discouraging Americans from giving
up on their horribly wasteful and polluting SUVs, for there are many
important reasons to encourage them to do so, but at least for now,
oil supply is not one of them.
Yes, of course, Bush's light-truck constituency cares about oil,
and Iraq's reserves are second only to Saudi Arabia's. But the
notion that a great power needs physically to control sources of a
plentiful raw material is simply outdated. The nationalization of
oil reserves, a worldwide phenomenon of a few generations ago, is
something not likely to be undone, and, besides, a very comfortable
modus vivendi has grown up between producing and consuming
governments.Anything resembling American expropriation of
Middle East oil fields would produce tidal waves not just in the
Arab world, but in places like Mexico and Venezuela. I cannot think
of a better way of causing Al Qaeda recruits to line up in a dozen
countries much the way alarmed, idealistic, young Britains lined up
in 1914 to fight "the damned Bosch." Even with the hillbilly crowd
running the White House, I think it safe to say this approach is not
on.
Iraq's reserves are of no value to Iraq unless their production
is for sale. No matter who runs Iraq, it is a sure bet that its oil
will flow for as long as the reserves hold out, at prices worked out
under those cozy arrangements of producing and consuming countries.
In recent years, it has only been America's harsh economic
restrictions on Iraq that prevented a possible glutting of the oil
market.
Iraq's reserves represent a gigantic future revenue stream, many
hundreds of billions of dollars. Bush's crowd definitely wants this
future revenue stream put into hands that are friendlier to American
policy.
The uncertainty that Saddam Hussein represents for American
policy-makers is not uncertainty over the availability of oil; it is
uncertainty over what Hussein may choose to do with the revenue
stream over the decade or so possibly left to his rule, and it is
the uncertainty of what Israel may do in response.
Hussein's army is not a serious threat to Israel. Its leadership
and equipment make it inferior in almost every respect to the IDF,
and it certainly doesn't have the United States supplying
round-the-clock military intelligence, new technical capabilities, a
bottomless supply of spare parts, and diplomatic pouches full of
cash.
But Hussein with a small nuclear arsenal is quite another matter.
Israel is a small country, and just two or three nuclear devices
could devastate its highly-urbanized population. And you wouldn't
need missiles to achieve this. School buses, delivery trucks,
aircraft, or fishing boats are all more accurate delivery systems
than Iraqi Scuds.
That is the reason why Israel not only has nuclear weapons but
has more of them than it would at first appear to need as a
deterrent. The concept at work here is having a deterrent that
compensates for Israel's small size vis--vis a threat from a much
larger country or a group of countries.
The United States, it seems almost childishly unnecessary to say,
does not care about how wicked or unpleasant Hussein may be. Nor
does it care about his record on human rights. The truth is that he
is no worse than the many cutthroats with whom the U.S. cozily does
business.
The problem with Hussein is that he won't play the game under
rules the U.S. has laid down. Oh, he has cooperated in the past, and
for considerable periods of time, he was treated as one of America's
useful

Bush's oil move backfires

Now he will have to try diplomacy
LeaderTuesday August 5,
2003The
Guardian
In a dream ending for the chapter
of history being written now in Iraq, neo-conservatives fantasised before the
war about a privatised, pro-American Iraqi oil industry. This would have access
to the world's second largest hydrocarbon reserves and produce so much oil that
Saudi Arabia, in charge of Opec, would lose its grip on petrol prices.
The world would then be swimming in inexpensive petrol - the cost of which
would be dictated by the market, not by an anti-American price-fixing club run
by Riyadh. Low prices would also mean falling revenues for oil-producers, which
in the Middle East might precipitate the collapse of regimes hostile to the US.
These hopes are now being dissipated like sand before the desert wind.
Oil is dribbling, rather than pumping, from Iraq's bomb-blasted oil industry.
Sabotage and theft mean Iraq's oil production remains at a fraction of the
levels achieved under Saddam. With reconstruction failing to take off, there is
little sign of a post-Ba'athist dividend in the form of low oil prices. The
result is that US action in Iraq has not weakened Opec, and hence Saudi Arabia,
but strengthened it.
Last week's meeting of Opec ministers confirmed that with supplies being
disrupted by political unrest in Venezuela and Nigeria, oil prices would remain
where the Saudis want them to be - high. This is bad news for any putative
global recovery and the US economy. Ever since Arab nations imposed an embargo
on oil exports to America in 1973, the United States has tried, in theory, to
wean itself off foreign oil. George Bush declared hydrocarbon independence a
priority. But the real issue is not where the oil spurts from, but how much it
costs to buy.
If politics is the pursuit of economics by other means, then Mr Bush needs
now to display a deftness previously absent. Oil ministers are already talking
of cutting production, with the implicit, Exocet-shaped threat of rising petrol
costs. Every major economic recession in the past 40 years has been preceded by
a jump in the oil price.
The Saudi foreign minister's fury last week over a Congressional report that
implicated his nation in terrorism will not have gone unnoticed. The
neo-conservatives' project for Opec has been exposed as counterproductive.
Instead Washington will have to revert to diplomacy to win over Riyadh. The
question is whether they do so by being crude - or by being refined.

NEW YORK (CNN) --An appeals court ruled that
families of those killed on September 11, 2001, who sought access to Iraqi funds
frozen by the United States "must look elsewhere" to collect
damages.

In a 16-page ruling, the 2nd U.S. Court of Appeals
on Friday upheld a U.S. District Court decision last month denying the families
any part of the $1.7 billion in funds frozen at the start of the first Gulf
War.

On September 11, 2003, U.S. District Judge Harold
Baer ruled that families of the victims of the World Trade Center attacks cannot
have access to Iraqi funds seized by the United States in 1990 because the money
is "needed to rebuild Iraq."

Family members sought the funds to satisfy an
earlier court ruling saying Iraq owed the families $63.5
million.

The lawsuit was brought by the estates of George
Eric Smith and Timothy Soulas, who were killed in the attacks two years
ago.

Baer said Iraq's frozen assets became property of
the United States when President Bush signed an executive order to that effect
in March, indicating that the money was earmarked for Iraq
reconstruction.

The judge ruled in May that the plaintiffs did
show there was a link between Iraq and al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in the
World Trade Center attacks and that damages must be paid by bin Laden, Saddam
Hussein and the Iraqi government.

"I conclude that plaintiffs have shown, albeit
barely, 'by evidence satisfactory to the court' that Iraq provided material
support to bin Laden and al Qaeda," Baer wrote in his May 7
decision.

George Eric Smith, 38, was a senior business
analyst for SunGard Asset Management Systems/Global Plus, and Timothy Soulas,
35, was a managing director of foreign currencies for Cantor
Fitzgerald.

Smith was not married and had no children. Soulas
is survived by his wife, Katy, and six children.

The families' attorney, James Beasley Jr., vowed
to appeal the case to the Supreme Court.

In a telephone interview, Beasley
said Bush had taken away all the money Congress had intended for September 11
victims, in this case allocating it for Iraqi reconstruction and humanitarian
needs.

"I represent a widow with six children. Another
family lost a significant member of their family, " Beasley said. " How about the humanitarian needs of the people in this
country? "

From a piece about last year's, highly unreported (given it was the biggest last year
- bigger than the Arizona fire AND the Colorado fire) fire in southwestern Oregon:

The community people from Southern Oregon say that the big forest fires in Southwest
Oregon were intentionally set. Some community people looked for the area where the
fires were set and found the headwaters of the fire. They tried to get others to look
at these areas and when they came back to the area, forest service and other law
enforcement officers kept them out. Then the area was burned over again.

The following is snipped from AzWildFires.org about last year's huge fire in Arizona,
ignited, admittedly, by a government contracted worker (in this case, an employe of
the Bureau of Indian Affairs):

This website was intended for publishing information and assisting the victims of AZ
wildfires, until Thursday, June 27, 2002 at 4:48 pm, when I received a call from an
Overgaard/Heber resident/business person drove for 10+ miles to a phone and was very
upset in the way everything was going. This person was one of the witnesses to the
events of the those who LET the WALL of fire come up to these mentioned towns, which
includes all the dis-information that was fed to the media. These witnesses were
prepared to make a fire line miles down the road to deter the wildfires from entering
Overgaard/Heber and were stopped, allowing them to only watch this wall of fire
coming to destroy their homes, this person said.

Electrostatic writes: That fire, miraculously, stopped just before wiping out the town

The following is snipped from a piece I posted to Memes.org last year, entitled Arson
and Salvage Logging - a little known tidbit pertaining to the fire that got little
attention, courtesy of the Associated Press (ANOTHER fire from last year started by a
federally contracted worker - National Forest Service this time):

The indictment came after prosecutors expressed doubt about Barton's story that she
accidentally started the fire while burning a letter from her estranged husband.
Investigators contend the fire was staged to look like an escaped campfire.

Shredding the American Constitution - With the Push of a Button

 By Chris Floyd

The Moscow Times It's a shell game, with money, companies and corporate brands switching in a blur of buyouts and bogus fronts. It's a sinkhole, where mobbed-up operators, paid-off public servants, crazed Christian fascists, CIA shadow-jobbers, war-pimping arms dealers and presidential family members lie down together in the slime. It's a hacker's dream, with pork-funded, half-finished, secretly programmed computer systems installed without basic security standards by politically partisan private firms, and protected by law from public scrutiny. It's how the United States, the "world's greatest democracy," casts its votes. And it's why George W. Bush will almost certainly be the next president of the United States no matter what the people of the United States might want.

The American vote-count is controlled by three major corporate players Diebold, ESS, and Sequoia with a fourth, Science Applications International Corporation, coming on strong...

These companies all of them hardwired into the Bushist Party power grid have been given billions of dollars by the Bush Regime to complete a sweeping computerization of voting machines nationwide by the 2004 election. These glitch-riddled systems many using "touch-screen" technology that leaves no paper trail at all are almost laughably open to manipulation, according to corporate whistleblowers and computer scientists at Stanford, Johns Hopkins and other universities.

The technology had a trial run in the 2002 midterm elections. In Georgia, serviced by new Diebold systems, a popular Democratic governor and senator were both unseated in what the media called "amazing" upsets, with results showing vote swings of up to 16 percent from the last pre-ballot polls. In computerized Minnesota, former Vice President Walter Mondale a replacement for popular incumbent Paul Wellstone, who died days before the vote was also defeated in a large last-second vote swing. Convenient "glitches" in Florida saw an untold number of votes intended for the Democratic candidate registering instead for Governor Jeb "L'il Brother" Bush. A Florida Democrat who lost a similarly "glitched" local election went to court to have the computers examined but the case was thrown out by a judge who ruled that the innards of America's voting machines are the "trade secrets" of the private companies who make them.

Who's behind these private companies? It's hard to tell: The corporate lines even the bloodlines of these "competitors" are so intricately mixed. For example, at Diebold whose corporate chief, Wally O'Dell, a top Bush fundraiser, has publicly committed himself to "delivering" his home state's votes to Bush next year the election division is run by Bob Urosevich. Bob's brother, Todd, is a top executive at "rival" ESS. The brothers were originally staked in the vote-count business by Howard Ahmanson, a member of the Council for National Policy, a right-wing "steering group" stacked with Bushist faithful.

Ahmanson is also one of the bagmen behind the extremist "Christian Reconstructionist" movement, which openly advocates a theocratic takeover of American democracy, placing the entire society under the "dominion" of "Christ the King." This "dominion" includes the death penalty for homosexuals, exclusion of citizenship for non-Christians, stoning of sinners and we kid you not slavery, "one of the most beneficent of Biblical laws."

Ahmanson also has major holdings in ESS, whose former CEO is Republican Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska. When Hagel ran for office, his own company counted the votes; needless to say, his initial victory was reported as "an amazing upset." Hagel still has a million-dollar stake in the parent company of ESS. In Florida, Jeb Bush's first choice for a running mate in his 1998 gubernatorial race was ESS lobbyist Sandra Mortham, who made a mint installing the machines that counted Jeb's votes.

Sequoia also has a colorful history, most recently in Louisiana, where it was the center of a massive corruption case that sent top state officials to jail for bribery, most of it funneled through Mob-connected front firms. Sequoia executives were also indicted, but escaped trial after giving immunized testimony against state officials. The British-owned company's corporate parent is private equity firm Madison Dearborn a partner of the Carlyle Group, where George Bush I makes millions trolling the world for war pork, privatizations and sweetheart deals with government insiders.

Meanwhile, the shadowy defense contractor SAIC has jumped into the vote-counting game, both directly and through spinoffs by its top brass, including Admiral Bill Owens, former military aide to Dick Cheney and Carlyle honcho Frank Carlucci, and ex-CIA chief Robert Gates. SAIC's history of fraud charges and security

From an article by BC's eminent political journalist, Charlie Smith

The Haida Nation and its elected president, Gujaaw, are seeking a
declaration in BC Supreme Court that they hold aboriginal title over
'Haida Gway', also known as the Queen Charlotte Islands.

Also, ...the federal government has denied that the Haida Nation or
descendents ever constituted a 'single unified aboriginal collectivity

If the Haida win this in court, they could take a seat in the UN General

Lies: Pillars of the State by Lisa Guliani
NOTE: The Victor Thorn show airs every
Monday night – 9:00 pm eastern standard time – on the Reality Radio
  Network – www.realityradionetwork.com. "Statesmen will
invent cheap lies, putting blame upon the nation that is attacked, and
every man will be glad of those conscience-soothing falsities, and will
diligently study them, and refuse to examine any refutations of them; and
thus he will by and by convince himself that the war is just, and will
thank God for the better sleep he enjoys after this process of grotesque
  self-deception."
  --
Mark Twain, "Chronicle of Young Satan" On Monday, September 8th,
President George W. Bush informed the nation and the lame-duck U.S.
Congress that he now needs a whopping $87 Billion to maintain U.S.
military objectives in Iraq and Afghanistan. This eye-popping amount of
“money” is to be used to maintain the ongoing death, doom, destruction and
decimation known as “defeating the enemies of freedom” (also called
“securing the interests of the cabal and making Poppa Bush gleefully wet
his trousers.”) On Wednesday September 17th, 2003, George W. Bush
calmly announced to reporters that there was no evidence linking Saddam
Hussein with the events of September 11, 2001. Just like that, our man
George reversed himself. You see, George has changed his mind. Forget
about what he said BEFORE, ok? Never mind that no “weapons of mass
destruction” have materialized thus far. Never mind that. That was
yesterday. This is today – and today, George W. has his hand out once
again, expecting more of our fake money and more multinational troops
“over there” to assist in the slaying of more phantom dragons. George
wants to replenish the war chest, you see. Oh yeah, and he wants LESS
focus on the inconsistencies and outright lies of the last couple of
years, so if you don’t mind, just forget all that business, will ya?
George wants bygones to be bygones. Oh, and his administration would like
us all to know that they never SAID Saddam had anything to do with 9/11.
So please get that one straight. We must have IMAGINED they said it. In
reality, on some distant planet in a far-off galaxy, they only IMPLIED it.
They ALLUDED to it – as Vernon Jordan would say, “ova and ova and ova”. So
what. We don’t need your stinkin’ WMD’s, says Dubbya. We get our war
without them. Our arsenal is complete with twisted truths, outright lies,
and smokescreens. Throw in a little backpedaling and we’re good to go.
Forget too, about the deadly drumbeat of yesterday, George’s formal
pretext for this “war” – faked documents which the White House knew all
about, yet used anyway. George wants and needs your blind allegiance –
even if he lied - which he did, which he continues to do. We’re supposed
to support him and his “war” anyway. After all, he’s our man. We
are to forget the outrageous loss of human life which continues even now –
today - on ALL fronts. We are at war, my friends, and such are the prices
to be paid in wars, and apparently in peace time. George is a
“nation-builder”. Mind you, he has no interest in “reconstructing” a
crumbling America. No, our fake money is slotted for foreign aid and
assistance. We Americans are on our own as far as that’s concerned. We
need to help George and his buddies clean up the terrific mess they’ve
made of the Middle East. George can’t clean up his messes by himself. He
can’t clean up his lies either, for that matter. Bush has spoken
of “a collection of killers … desperately trying to undermine Iraq’s
progress and throw the country into chaos”. Yes, we are certainly
witnessing the shenanigans of a “collection of killers,” I’ll agree with
that. Witness too, how the war hawks are still dividing, distracting, and
diverting our attention from the lies. They need to maintain the mental
conditioning process and the status quo and the flat-line American
mentality. We are presumed to be so stupid as to believe that this war is
“necessary” – that it is “morally imperative” to waste innocent people,
steal their resources and obliterate entire countries. We’re dealing with
a “new morality” here. This steroidal flexing of U.S. military muscle has
failed to impress the rest of the world, but it damn sure

Re: [CTRL] Bush's Oil Move Backfires (Flashback)

  Keep in mind
that a number of the neocons were also oil industry executives. Condoleezza
Rice was a consultant to Chevron. They are definitely
  connected.
Steve,

Strictly speaking, the neocons for the
most part are a group of ideologues, academics, intellectuals and journalists
who are a strange combination of ultra-leftism on social policy and ultra-right
Likud Zionism. Most of them have no accomplishments to their name in
pragmatic endeavors. This is the same parasitic personality type which
seized positions of bureaucratic power in the Soviet Union and drove it into the
ground.

The neocons are long on big, unrealistic
ideas and short on practical accomplishments.

Condoleezza Rice, Dick Cheney and Donald
Rumsfeld are not technically neocons -- they are tools and instruments of the
neocons. They are regurgitating concepts and words that have been put into
their mouths by Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Perle, William Kristol, Michael
Ledeenand other prominent neocons who dominate the PNAC, AEI, JINSA and
similar think tanks.

Most oil industry executives hold the
neocons in contempt and consider them to be unreliable schemers and
blabbermouths.

The neocons have been hatching schemes for
stealing Arab and Muslim oil on behalf on Israel since at least the
seventies. These schemes have little to do with the carefuljudgment
of big oil of what is in its best interest.

If you want to grasp what the neocons are
all about, read a large stack of issues of Commentary -- their key issues
come into focus quite quickly. Everything they say and do revolves around
the interests not simply of Israel ina practical sense, but of Israel as a
grandiose and messianic myth. The neocons are ethnocentric
wankers.

George W. Bush has gone along with the
neocons not because of his oil industry connections, but because of his
Christian Zionism -- the neocons have exploited that primitive
superstition to the hilt.

Bush Sr.'s oil buddies, including James
Baker, tried to warn Junior that invading Iraq would be bad for the oil
business.

This is the reason that Michael Ruppert
and Kris Millegan have been able to produce so little evidence supporting their
theory that big oil has been the ringleader behind the drive to invade and
occupy Israel's Arab and Muslim neighbors. The theory is simply
false. For the most part big oil has sought friendly and stable relations
with Israel's oil-producing neighbors, a policy which has enraged Israel and the
neocons.
