The U.S. War on Iraq: Yet Another Battle To Protect Israeli Interests?

Why did President George W. Bush invade Iraq? Some very curious developments in the U.S.-occupied nation are making Iraqis and their Arab neighbors very uneasy as they question Bush's motives. These amazing tales should also infuriate Americans who are beginning to suspect they've been hoodwinked into fighting yet another battle on behalf of Israel.

On the eve of war, President Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair told their people that Iraq's weapons of mass destruction posed a real and present danger to Americans, their British cousins, indeed the entire planet. If Saddam Hussain didn't use his weapons himself, the Anglo-American leaders argued, he might pass them on to terrorist groups. U.S. and British citizens believed their leaders were looking out for their safety and that they had evidence of Saddam Hussain's evil intentions which they could not yet divulge.

Some 1,500 American investigators are now searching Iraq for evidence to back up those controversial claims. Former United Nations weapons inspector Scott Ritter doubts the investigators, known as the Iraq Survey Group, will have much luck. For one thing, he points out, every Iraqi government record relating to the weapons program was stored in metal containers at a complex in downtown Baghdad's Jadariya. This archive was the basis for the 12,500-page declaration Iraq compiled for the U.N. in 2002.

On April 8 U.S. troops took possession of the complex. They never interviewed the scientists who continued to report for work or tried to examine the archives. Instead the U.S. soldiers simply withdrew after two weeks, leaving all the evidence: computers, disks, video records of U.N. interviews with Iraqi scientists throughout the 1990s, and the carefully organized documents. Looters ransacked the facility and destroyed any evidence of a weapons program.

Anyone who watches TV knows that, in investigating a crime, it first is necessary to secure the crime scene. One has to wonder why U.S. forces never bothered to do thisâor to guard from looters the Tuwaitha Nuclear Research Center, or six other nuclear sites in Iraq. Did coalition leaders know all along there were no weapons of mass destruction?

It's beginning to look like anti-war protesters were on the right track when they declared: "No War For Oil!" Iraq, one of the world's largest oil producers, has a potential output of 2.5 million barrels a day. Would the U.S. really attack a nation for its oil? Perish the thought! The coalition promised that Iraq's oil would finally benefit its own people, instead of lining its leader's pockets. Today Iraqis are beginning to doubt that message as well, as fuel shortages and gas lines at petrol stations make them wonder if they'll ever be able to return to normal.

And now another horrible suspicion is crossing their minds. Did Bush's Israel-first advisers invade Iraq in order to assure that Israel would have easy access to oil?

A March 31 Ha'aretz article reported upcoming plans to reopen a long-unused pipeline from Iraq's Kirkuk oil fields to the Israeli port of Haifa. Israel's National Infrastructure Minister Joseph Paritzky suggested that after Saddam Hussain's departure Iraqi oil could flow to the Jewish state, to be consumed or marketed from there.

"The pipeline [of Iraqi oil] to Haifa is considered a 'bonus' the U.S. will give to Israel."

According to John Cooley's April 23 article in The Christian Science Monitor, "The idea is economically tempting for Israel and some of its friends, especially those whose firms might profit from such a project. Oil-poor Israel, MEES [Middle East Economic Survey] reports, wants high-quality Kirkuk crude oil for its Haifa refinery. Israeli refineries currently use Russian, West African, Egyptian, and other crude oils.

"Politically, the scheme is a potential bomb," Cooley warned, because Israel and Iraq have been implacable foes since 1948. "Its implementation could ignite a new explosion in the chain of reactions to the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq, now beginning to reverberate throughout the troubled Middle East."

Nevertheless, according to a Ha'aretz article the following day, "a senior Pentagon official" sent a telegram to a "top Foreign Ministry official in Jerusalem" to check the logistics of pumping oil from Iraq to the oil refineries in Haifa and rebuilding the Kirkuk-Mosul-Haifa pipeline. According to the telegram, "The pipeline to Haifa is considered a 'bonus' the U.S. will give to Israel in return for its support for the American-led campaign in Iraq."

In early September, Paritzky will travel to Washington, DC to present Israel's pipeline plans, along with a cost estimate, to U.S. Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham. Israel's National Infrastructure Ministry estimates

FACILITY 1391, a concrete fortress in central Israel on a rise overlooking a kibbutz, is almost obscured by high walls and fir trees. Two watchtowers give armed guards extensive views of surrounding fields. From the outside it looks like many other police stations built by the British in the 1930s across the Mandate of Palestine. Today many serve as military bases, their location revealed by signposts showing only a number.

Facility 1391, close to the Green Line, the pre-1967 border between Israel and the West Bank, is different. It is not marked on maps, it has been erased from aerial photographs and recently its numbered signpost was removed. Censors have excised all mention of its location from the Israeli media, with the government saying that secrecy is essential to "prevent harm to the country's security". According to lawyers, foreign journalists divulging information risk being expelled from Israel. But, despite government attempts to impose a news blackout, information about more than a decade of horrific events at Facility 1391 are beginning to leak out. As a newspaper described it, Facility 1391 is "Israel's Guantanamo" (a reference to the Camp X-Ray prison for al-Qaida and Taliban captives run by the United States on occupied Cuban territory).

In October 2003 a panel of international legal experts, led by Richard Goldstone, a judge in South Africa's constitutional court who has also been chief prosecutor of the international tribunals for former Yugoslavia and for Rwanda, called Camp X-Ray "a black hole" into which inmates disappeared, to be stripped of basic rights under the Geneva Conventions. The report added that "states cannot hold detainees, for whom they are responsible, outside of the jurisdiction of all international courts".

Although Facility 1391 has received none of the publicity of the US prison, it more flagrantly violates international law. Unlike Camp X-Ray, its location is not publicly known; there aren't even long-distance photographs of its inmates of the kind taken at Guantanamo Bay. Unlike the US prison, Facility 1391 has never been independ ently inspected, not even by the International Red Cross. What happens there is a mystery.

Justice Goldstone was able to declare that inside Camp X-Ray there were "662 people without any access to due process" of law, but no one, apart from a few senior Israeli government and security officials, knows how many inmates there are in Facility 1391. Testimonies from former inmates suggest it is crowded with detainees, many of them Lebanese captured during Israel's 18-year occupation of south Lebanon.

Four months after the first revelations of its existence, the Israeli courts have yet to make the government reveal any substantial information about it. "Anyone entering the prison can be made to disappear, potentially for ever," says Leah Tsemel, an Israeli lawyer who specialises in advising Palestinians (see Israel: beyond hope) "It's no different from the jails run by tinpot South American dictators."

What little information is available suggests that interrogation methods using torture are routine. A high-profile detainee, Mustafa Dirani of the now defunct Lebanese Shia militia Amal, has alleged that he was raped by his interrogators. Israel recently admitted that he had been moved to Facility 1391 after he was kidnapped from Lebanon by Israeli agents in 1994.

The first chinks in the secrecy about the prison were prised open by Tsemel last year, after the Israeli army's reinvasion of West Bank cities in Operation Defensive Shield, April 2002. Until then it seems to have been used almost exclusively for captive foreign nationals, mainly Jordanians, Lebanese, Syrians, Egyptians and Iranians. It is not known how many of them have been held there. The Friends of Prisoners Committee in Nazareth claims 15 Arab foreign nationals have gone missing from Israel's prison system.

There are many instances of kidnappings, particularly from Lebanon, assumed to have been carried out by Israel. Four Iranian government officials who disappeared in Beirut in 1982 have never been accounted for. In recent prisoner exchange negotiations between Israel and the Lebanese militia Hizbollah, their families have requested information from Israel.

But after the mass arrests in April 2002, which stretched Israel's detention facilities to bursting, a number of Palestinians were also sent to Facility 1391. For a while the disappearance of these detainees was concealed in the general chaos after the army sweeps. By October 2002, however, Tsemel and an Israeli human rights group, Hamoked, were demanding information in the courts. They presented habeas corpus writs, effectively demanding that the missing Palestin ians be produced to prove they were alive.

ALLEGED MOSSAD OFFICE BOMBED IN IRAQ

An office bombed in the Iraqi town Kirkouk has been reported as belonging to Israelâs Mossad intelligence agency (the equivalent of the CIA). The number of dead and wounded in Monday nightâs bombing is still not final, according to the Egyptian-based Middle East News Agency, but they included âMossad peopleâ and a number of local Kurds, who were reported as collaborating with the Israeli agents.

The injured were rushed to a nearby American military base in Kirkouk and some were transferred to a hospital in Mousâul. Local Kurds and American soldiers rushed to the building immediately after the explosion and attempted to hide anything that may reveal the âtrueâ nature of the so-called Mossad office, MENA reported.

The identity of the aggressors remains unknown, according to the report.

Israel refuses to comment on its covert operations overseas.

the accusations - left-wing activists and Arabs from the village of Inbus - 
submit to lie-detector tests.Last week, a group of Israeli left-wing 
activists, together with Arabs from the village of Inbus – opposite the outlying 
neighborhood of Mitzpe Yitzhar – filed a police complaint claiming that their 
olive trees had been cut down by Jewish residents of Yesha (Judea, Samaria and 
Gaza). The Samaria region Police came to investigate, bringing along an 
olive-tree expert from the Jewish National Fund, who concluded that the trees 
had not been cut down at all, but rather had merely had their upper branches 
pruned. He stated: “whoever cut these trees did so expertly in the specific 
manner which does not cause any serious damage whatsoever to the tree, whose 
branches will begin to grow back within 2 to 3 months.”As a result of 
the JNF expert’s conclusions, the Police have requested that the left-wing 
Israeli activists and the Arabs from Inbus undergo a polygraph lie-detector 
examination to determine whether the accusations filed against the Jewish 
residents were a purposely-manufactured provocation. “If it is 
determined that we are speaking about a provocation in which someone cut these 
branches and then filed a false accusation with the police, then we are dealing 
with false testimony, which is a serious infraction,” police superintendent 
Doron Ben-Ami told Israel National News.Residents of the village of 
Yitzhar in Northern Samaria, as well as the outlying neighborhoods of Mitzpe 
Yitzhar and Hill 725 have published a joint statement denying any connection to 
the cutting of the village of Inbus’ olive trees. The letter is a response to MK 
Efraim Sneh and some in the press who have stated, “without a shred of evidence” 
that the residents cut down the olive trees. “There is not one bit 
of truth in these accusations – they are simply baseless slander,” wrote the 
residents.“We request from those members of the press who lay guilt upon 
the settlers for the cutting of olive trees – which hasn’t happened and will not 
happen – to cease their program of delegitimization against the residents of 
Judea, Samaria and Gaza and to return to reporting the facts,” said Aviad 
Vissouly, chairman of the Land of Israel movement. “The fact is that the police 
have asked the left-wing activists and the Arabs to be examined by a 
lie-detector and they are refusing to participate in the investigation. We are 
talking about a program of slander on par with the ‘Protocols of the Elders of 
Zion,’ and we are requesting that the Prime Minister order a full investigation 
and report the findings to the public.”“Additionally,” added Vissouly,

FBI to Website Owner: "We Are Watching You"

Cryptome is a web site dedicated to investigating and publishing accounts of government improprieties, particularly as they relate to secrecy and First Amendment violations. On November 4, FBI agents visited the website's New York City office and met with site owner John Young.

Both agents, who are identified on the site and who left their official cards, said that they had information that Cryptome was a source of information that could be used to "harm the United States." Prior investigations by the FBI, the agent admitted, had not found any evidence of criminal wrongdoing, but the FBI was fearful that information on the site would end up in the "wrong" hands. Cryptome was asked to report to the FBI any "gut feeling" they had that its information would be a "threat" to the U.S.

One agent said that visits like these are increasingly common as the government seeks out information on threats to the U.S. The agents said they would "write up" a report on their visit. The agents asked that their names not be published, but Cryptome refused to honor that request. One reason for their request of anonymity is so that information about them cannot be pulled from one of many databases available online. (Funny how government agents don't want to be the source of data mining, but they certainly want to use it against us.)

Below is a short clip from a conversation with Naomi Klein, a fellow
Canadian and our generation's most potent threat to the Borg-like
menace currently, collectively known as the World Bank/IMF/G8. Few
people can riff this fluidly when asked about the structural analysis
of the expansionist corpo-military paradigm in Iraq.


Naomi: In Iraq, all that we hear is: it's a mess, it's a mess, it's a
mess. It's a morass. It's a quagmire. It's a disaster. And that's
true, on a military level. It's a disaster because people are dying
and it's a disaster because it's deeply disorganized. But that whole
discussion, that strategic military discussion, is covering over the
broader question of: What were the goals of this war? And if we ask
the question of what were the goals of this war, then we can ask the
more serious question of: have those goals been achieved?


I believe that the goal of this war was to bomb, into being, a new
free trade zone. Precisely because of the enormous backlash against
these economic policies by countries that have already adopted them.
Capitalism functions like a drug addict. The drug is growth. It needs
growth to survive. It needs growth to expand. The market has not
actually recovered, it is in desperate need of new growth and it
finds itself in a situation where its usual suppliers, its usual
dealers, are cutting it off. That's what is happening in Latin
America. When attempts to privative energy and water in Bolivia are
resisted, when huge popular movements are saying 'we don't want the
free trade area of the Americas'... in Cancun, the last WTO round,
when poor countries banded together and said 'we'd rather have no

it's going so well that the Economist recently describe Iraq as
a "capitalist dream." And the Financial Times described what Paul
Bremer has managed to achieve in terms of economic reforms as "a
wishlist for foreign investors." And he has done, in six months in
Iraq, what it took three decades to achieve in Latin America. In a
single day, on September 19, he passed a set of policies that
literally usually take three decades to get passed.

Iraq's economy was protected somewhat, as are all the economies of
Middle East, which is why it's not really about Iraq. Iraq is just
the wedge. And countries that have oil wealth have been able to use
that oil wealth to protect large sectors of the economy that, in
other parts of the world, are open to privatization. So in Iraq's
constitution it very clearly says that there are sectors of the
economy which are considered essential services and not open to
privatization. Not just oil, but water and so on. And it also says
that Iraqi businesses cannot be foreign-owned.

Calif. Halts E-Vote Certification

SACRAMENTO, California -- Uncertified software may have been installed on
electronic voting machines used in one California county, according to the
secretary of state's office.

Marc Carrel, assistant secretary of state for policy and planning, told
attendees Thursday at a panel on voting systems that California was halting
the certification process for new voting machines manufactured by Diebold
Election Systems.

The reason, Carrel said, was that his office had recently
received "disconcerting information" that Diebold may have installed
uncertified software on its touch-screen machines used in one county.

He did not say which county was involved. However, secretary of state
spokesman Douglas Stone later told Wired News that the county in question
is Alameda.

Alameda County, a Democratic stronghold that includes the cities of
Berkeley and Oakland, converted to all-electronic voting last year at a
cost of more than $12 million. The county used the machines in state
elections last year and in last month's gubernatorial recall election. The
machines will also be used in tomorrow's municipal election in Alameda.

The only other California county currently using the Diebold touch-screen
machines on election days is Plumas. Los Angeles County uses a limited
number of the machines for early voting. No one was available for comment
on whether uncertified software may have been installed on machines used in
Plumas or Los Angeles.

The Diebold machines slated for state certification, known as the AccuVote
TSx, are a modified version of the machines used in Alameda and Plumas. The
new machine is said to be a lighter, more compact version.

At the meeting, Carrel delayed indefinitely the certification of the new
machines until the secretary of state's office can investigate the matter.

Diebold officials, who were attending the meeting, seemed surprised by the
announcement and expressed displeasure to several panelists afterward that
it had been introduced in a public forum. They were unavailable for
comment.

Also present at the meeting were representatives from Solano, San Diego and
San Joaquin counties, where officials are waiting for state certification
to begin using the new machines.

Officials from Alameda County's registrar of voters were unavailable for
comment.

No mystery in American history is ever solved because the actual facts 
of each case never reach the public for adequate examination and 
resolution. I mean, we still haven't solved the questions of who 
murdered Presidents Zachary Taylor and Abraham Lincoln, never mind who 
killed the Kennedy brothers or Martin Luther King.

And this likely will be the fate of the investigation into the 
tragedies of September 11, 2001 - we will never learn who did what: who 
planned it, who executed it, who made money off it - although we do 
have a pretty good idea who is covering it up, since the perpetrators 
regularly embarrass themselves in full public view with their endless 
expectoration of false statements and lame lies.

The real reason these mysteries are never solved is not because of any 
cover-up by government officials or rich power brokers. The reason these 
mysteries are never solved is because of the pathetic state of our news 
media, which are wholly controlled by the very same men who commit 
these colossal crimes that injure us all.

Most journalists have never told the truth about politics; they only 
are allowed to say what their bosses let them say. And almost always, 
if the newspaper or TV station is a big one, their bosses won't let 
them tell the truth about practically anything.

This is no idle complaint, no sour grape cocktail.

We are prevented from acquiring the information necessary to live 
honest and productive lives: prevented by our schools, which limit the 
spectrum of functional data that shapes the way we think as we grow up; 
by our hallowed institutions, which exist at the whim of power 
structures whose real workings we have little cognizance of; and by the 
public utterances of people we consider heroes, whose words may inspire 
us at the time they are uttered, but whose achievements, considered 
from the perspective of history, often do not match the deeds that made 
them admired in the first place.

Consider for a moment the historical perspectives of George Washington, 
who eagerly endorsed the slaughter of natives for the purpose of 
claiming land in the Ohio territory, or of Franklin Roosevelt, who 
supposedly brought us out of the Great Depression but now is better 
known for manipulating geopolitics to get us into World War II by 
creating the conditions that the led the Japanese to attack Pearl 
Harbor.

Now, as we wring our hands while America morphs from beacon of liberty 
to the most sinister oppressor of all people in the world, we come to 
another realization - if we are mature and wise enough to understand 
the USA has always been a militaristic machine, first taming a 
wilderness continent peopled by beings we called savages, now 
conquering a world occupied by individuals we disparagingly regard as 
inferior foreigners.

We come to understand that our prosperity is wholly dependent on 
conquest and exploitation of those less alert than ourselves. That this 
beastly attitude has been transformed into heroic legends is simply 
good public relations. Everybody needs to feel good about themselves, 
no matter what they are doing. Thus America has crafted for itself a 
history packed with glorious campaigns and noble efforts. The trail of 
corpses this history has produced is seldom mentioned.

And thus it is with 9/11.

Many high officials of the current United States government clearly 
know who planned and carried out the murderous attacks of September 11, 
2001. The names of the perpetrators are clearly available in the 
records of those agencies that monitor stock transactions, specifically 
the "put" options bought by as yet publicly unidentified individuals in 
the days immediately prior to 9/11, names kept secret by the 
confidentiality laws of bankers.

The sad fact is that these names are kept secret even though release of 
them could shed cleansing light on the cynical murders of 3,000 
Americans, 5,000 Afghanis and 10,000 Iraqis in the past two years. The 
secrecy of banking laws trumps the necessity of bringing mass murderers 
to justice. It always has and it always will. For the world is about 
money and exploitation, it is not about justice and honor. In America 
especially, mass murder of innocents is not as serious a crime as 
betraying financial trust, according to law.

So, many individuals associated with the U.S. government know full well 
who is responsible for 9/11. But they will go to their graves with the 
secret, because too much money has been made from the deception, and 
there is still a lot more money to be made in the overzealous military 
response to a tragedy that was devised for that very purpose.

And it's not merely those insider elitists who made money off their 
timely investments, with full knowledge of the charade that was about 
to be played, who are the killer

Technologies, Inc. (APTI), to purchase the corporation for $27 million in
cash.

APTI, a private company with headquarters in Washington, D.C., focuses on

Woman who filed sexual assault lawsuit against bush confirmed dead, cause of death listed as "gunshot wound to head"...

I finally got some confirmation from an obit in the Houston Chronicle that Margie Schoedinger, the woman who filed a sexual assault lawsuit against Bush last year, died in September.

I called the Harris County Medical Examiner's office, which lists her cause of death as a "gunshot wound to the head" and "suicide." Anyone versed in CIA/Mafia lingo knows that "suicide" sometimes means "murder" or at least carries with it some pressure to commit suicide by outside parties, such as those against whom that person has filed a lawsuit. I'm not yet saying this is a murder - you draw your own conclusion.

When I talked to Schoedinger in July she sounded in good health. She was only 38. It's another weird tragedy surrounding the Bush administration - and this one has received NO mention from the media.

commentary program." George Soros' personal advisor for politics,
Hamilton Fish III, is also a top executive at The Nation Institute.

2. In 1999, George Soros's Open Society Institute gave a $50,000
grant to the National Federation of Community Broadcasters, which
used to be headed by former Pacifica Foundation Executive Director
Lynn Chadwick.

3. In 1999, George Soros's Open Society Institute apparently gave a
$125,000 grant to the Citizens for Independent Public Broadcasting
[CIPB} group (on whose board sits FAIR/CounterSpin co-host Janine
Jackson) "to cover administrative and start-up costs for launching
national campaign entitled Citizens for Independent Broadcasting."

4. In 1999, George Soros's Open Society Institute gave a $78,660
grant to Don Hazen's Institute for Alternative
Journalism/IMI/Alternet in San Francisco "to fund start-up of Youth
Source, a youth Web site which will be part of a larger web poral,
Independent Source."

5. In 1999, George Soros's Open Society Institute gave a $126,000
grant to the International Center for Global Communications
Foundation "toward launch of Media Channel, first global media and
democracy supersite on the Internet."

6. In 1999, George Soros's Open Society Institute gave 4 grants,
totalling $118,000, to the Internews Network.
