New York State Official Sues Drug Maker Over Test
  DataBy GARDINER HARRIS

n a novel claim testing the way that the $400 billion
worldwide pharmaceutical industry is regulated, the New York State
attorney general, Eliot Spitzer, sued the British-based drug giant GlaxoSmithKline yesterday, accusing the company
of fraud in concealing negative information about its popular
  antidepressant medicine Paxil.
The civil lawsuit, filed in State Supreme Court in Manhattan, contends
that GlaxoSmithKline engaged in persistent fraud by failing to tell
doctors that some studies of Paxil showed
that the drug did not work in adolescents and might even lead to suicidal
thoughts. Far from warning doctors, the suit contends, the company
encouraged them to prescribe the drug for
  youngsters.
"The point of the lawsuit is to ensure that there is complete
information to doctors for making decisions in prescribing," Mr. Spitzer
said in an interview. "The record with Paxil, we believe, is a powerful
one that shows that GSK was making selective disclosures and was not
giving doctors the entirety of the evidence."
GlaxoSmithKline officials issued a statement yesterday saying in part
that the company "has acted responsibly in conducting clinical studies in
pediatric patients and disseminating data from those studies."
On Wall Street yesterday, the American depository receipts of
GlaxoSmithKline fell $1.38, or 3.2 percent, to $41.39.
Mr. Spitzer filed his suit at a time that the tendency of many drug
companies to publicize only studies with positive results has come under
  increasing criticism.
As he has done in actions involving the financial services and mutual
fund industries, Mr. Spitzer is entering regulatory terrain that has been
largely the preserve of the federal government, in this case the Food and
Drug Administration. This time, though, he maintains that his suit is not
a criticism of federal drug regulators.
"This isn't Harvey Pitt and the S.E.C.," he said, referring to the
former chief of the Securities and Exchange Commission, whom Mr. Spitzer
criticized as less than vigorous in enforcing federal securities laws.
Instead, Mr. Spitzer said that the F.D.A. had been hamstrung by court
rulings that have used free-speech arguments to limit the agency's power
to regulate what drug companies can say to doctors. Such rulings do not
limit his powers, Mr. Spitzer said.
"You cannot invoke free-speech arguments as a defense to fraud," he
  added.
Similar suits against other drug companies are likely, Mr. Spitzer
said. "This is an area that we're interested in," he said, "and I think
there are other cases out there that are analogous."
A spokeswoman for the F.D.A. would not comment on the lawsuit but noted
that the agency required companies to submit all data related to the
safety of their drugs. Because so much drug company data submitted is
considered proprietary, it is up to the F.D.A. to decide when to disclose
  possible public safety concerns.
That is what it did last year, when it warned doctors on the use of
Paxil for adolescents and children. Earlier this year, it required
antidepressant makers to strengthen suicide warnings on labels.
British drug regulators have banned the use of all but Prozac for the
treatment of depression in adolescents and children. Prozac, made by Eli Lilly Company, received a major
American endorsement this week when the widely anticipated results of a
study sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health indicated that
Prozac was superior to talk therapy alone or a placebo in treating
depression among teenagers. The study did not address suicide risks.
Civil suits have been filed against Glaxo and some other makers of
antidepressants by patients or surviving relatives, contending that the
drugs caused violent or suicidal behavior. Some criminal defendants have
contended that violent acts were a result of using the drugs.
Mr. Spitzer's lawsuit is part of a broad assault by prosecutors on the
drug industry's marketing practices. Last month, for example, federal
prosecutors in Boston announced a settlement with the world's largest drug
maker, Pfizer; the company agreed to pay $430 million
and to plead guilty to charges that its Warner-Lambert unit promoted the
drug Neurontin to doctors for the treatment of conditions where no benefit
  had been proved.

Wanted: Drugs to Fight
Bioterror
By Randy Dotinga, Wired News
Jun 02, 2004

Amid new warnings about a possible summer of terror, the U.S. government is
preparing to spend billons to coax pharmaceutical companies to develop drugs to
fend off a biological or chemical attack. But experts say the infusion of cash
may be little more than a good start.

The entire proposed allocation for manufacturing and stockpiling
bioterrorism drugs is $5.6 billion over a decade. By contrast, a single
cholesterol drug -- Lipitor -- rakes in $9 billion in revenue each year.

"We're buying what we can afford," said Julie Fischer, who studies
bioterrorism at the nonpartisan Henry L. Stimson Center.
"It doesn't mean it will fall dramatically short, but it isn't on the scale of
what pharmacological companies invest to develop a new drug. It's not a
tremendous amount of money, and it might not be adequate to get where we want to
go."

The so-called BioShield bill, which passed the Senate on May 19 after
months of delays, is expected to land on President Bush's desk soon. In addition
to allocating money, the legislation allows waivers in emergencies to let
companies bypass the usual years of testing before drugs can go on the
market.

At stake is the health of 293 million Americans and
perhaps countless people abroad.

The government is especially worried about the Big Six biological threats:
anthrax, smallpox, plague, tularemia, botulism toxin and viral hemorrhagic
fevers (like the Ebola virus). While less well-known than the other diseases, tularemia
and botulism toxins could
conceivably be aerosolized, causing severe respiratory illness and paralysis,
respectively.

To various extents, antibiotics can treat the bacterial threats, including
anthrax, plague and tularemia, but supplies could be a problem. And while an
anthrax vaccine is available, it's complicated to administer and painful to
take, said Jim Matthews, associate professor of clinical pharmacy at
Northeastern University.

Meanwhile, effective treatments for the hemorrhagic viruses and smallpox
remain elusive. Scientists are working on an Ebola vaccine. And they
are trying to tinker
with the traditional vaccine for smallpox, a disease that could pose a major
threat to millions of Americans, including AIDS patients, chemotherapy patients
and people who have ever suffered from the skin disease eczema.

While scientists continue to study the Big Six threats, drug companies are
much more interested in developing profitable drugs to treat long-term
conditions like cancer, high cholesterol or heart disease. A pill a day for life
is a better financial proposition than a medication people would take for just a
week or two until they recover from an infection.

In fact, a study released in the May issue of the journal Clinical
Infectious Diseases reports that only six of 506 drugs currently in
development are antibiotics, even though doctors continue to sound the alarm
about drug-resistant bacteria.

"That's a really small percentage, a pretty striking snapshot of the state
of industry research into these sorts of diseases," said Brad
Smith, an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of
Medicine and a fellow at the university's Center for Biosecurity.

Drug companies also have to worry about lawsuits, a huge potential threat
if, say, everyone in the United States ends up getting vaccinated against
smallpox and something goes wrong. Then there's the matter of spending millions
to develop drugs to treat diseases that may simply never emerge as a
threat.

BioShield will indemnify manufacturers, meaning the government would be on
the hook if something goes wrong, and would pay companies even if no one ever
needs to take one of their new drugs, vaccines or antitoxins.

"The goal of BioShield is to demonstrate a

Saddam's secret money-laundering trail
By LUCY KOMISAR

NEW YORK, June 2 (UPI) -- A detailed analysis of Saddam Hussein's secret
money-laundering techniques shows here for the first time how he used the
same offshore money launderers as Osama bin Laden. That covert money
network, based in the tax havens of Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Panama and
Nassau, helped bankroll the war machines of both Iraq and al-Qaida.

More than 1,000 pages of confidential corporate, bank and legal documents
show how the network functioned. The papers come from court cases filed in
several European countries, from corporate records, from investigations by
Italian police, from a report of the Kroll international investigative
agency, and from private sources. The documents are the basis of further
investigations coordinated in Europe by the prosecutor of Milan.

They show, for example, that a father-and-son team in Liechtenstein, whose
business is setting up shell companies and secret bank accounts, worked to
move the money of both Saddam and al-Qaida. Engelbert Schreiber and his son
Englebert Schreiber Jr. are listed as founder or board member of
Mediterranean Enterprises Development Projects; Tradex; Techno Service
Intl.; Saidomin; and Executive Flight Assistance, all Liechtenstein
companies that handled arms sales and payoffs for Saddam. They are also
listed on corporate documents for Nasreddin International Group Ltd Holding
(Liechtenstein). Ahmed Idriss Nasreddin, on the U.S. terrorist blacklist,
was a founder of Al Taqwa, the bank that moved money for al-Qaida and which
was closed down by the United States after 9/11. The Schreibers declined to
respond to numerous requests for comment.

One of the men linked in documents to several Panama shell companies used in
the Saddam laundering network was Baudoin Dunand, a Swiss lawyer who is
administrator of the Saudi Investment Company (SICO), the Geneva investment
affiliate of the Bin Laden family conglomerate, run by Osama bin Laden's
half-brother Yeslam Binladen. (They spell their names differently.) Mr.
Dunand declined to respond to repeated requests for comment.

The Banca del Gottardo in Lugano, Switzerland, moved al-Qaida money via the
Al Taqwa bank, a shell bank that operated through correspondent accounts at
the Gottardo branch in Nassau. It also handled payments for the Saddam money
network. The bank's spokesman wrote, Please be advised that we do not
intend to make any comments or discuss any issues with you regarding the
article you proposed in your e-mail.

Banque Paribas, headquartered in Paris, with a significant portion of shares
owned by Saddam's cousin Nadhmi Auchi, moved money for the Al-Mahdi network
in the 1980s and was the bank chosen to handle the Iraqi oil-for-food
payments. In fact, Iraq insisted that Paribas handle the oil-for-food escrow
account. A corporate document for Al Taqwa Trade, Property and Industry Co.
Ltd. of Liechtenstein -- an al-Qaida network shell company also shut down by
the United States -- lists Banque Paribas, Lugano, where it had accounts.
(Paribas in 2000 merged with another French bank to create BNP Paribas, with
Auchi continuing as one of the largest shareholders.)

Saddam Hussein began constructing his offshore operation in 1968 in
Switzerland, aware that the country's bank secrecy made it a prime place to
organize the movement of illicit funds and the purchase of arms. That year,
11 years before his coup, Saddam sent his half-brother Barzan Ibrahim Hasan
Al-Tikriti to Geneva to construct the network to launder secret commissions
charged on sales of Iraqi crude oil. The system would also be used for
kickbacks on purchase from Western arms dealers.

[CTRL] Pending DRAFT Legislation

Pending DRAFT Legislation
 Targeted for Spring 2005

DRAFT Would Start in June 2005

There is pending legislation in the House and Senate (twin bills: S 89 and HR 163) which will time the program's initiation so the draft can begin as early as Spring 2005 -- just after the 2004 presidential election. The administration is quietly trying to get these bills passed now, while the public's attention is on the elections, so our action on this is needed immediately.

$28 million has been added to the 2004 Selective Service System (SSS) budget to prepare for a military draft that could start as early as June 15, 2005. Selective Service must report to Bush on March 31, 2005 that the system, which has lain dormant for decades, is ready for activation. Please see website: www.sss.gov/perfplan_fy2004.html to view the sss annual performance plan - fiscal year 2004.

The pentagon has quietly begun a public campaign to fill all 10,350 draft  board positions and 11,070 appeals board slots nationwide.. Though this is an unpopular election-year topic, military experts and influential members of Congress are suggesting that if Rumsfeld's prediction of a "long, hard slog" in Iraq and Afghanistan [and a permanent state of war on "terrorism"] proves accurate, the U.S. may have no choice but to draft.

Congress brought twin bills, S. 89 and HR 163 forward this year, http://www.hslda.org/legislation/na...s89/default.asp  entitled the Universal National Service Act of 2003, "to provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons [age 18--26] in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes." These active bills currently sit in the committee on armed services.

Dodging the draft will be more difficult than those from the Vietnam era.

College and Canada will not be options. In December 2001, Canada and the U.S. signed a "smart border declaration," which could be used to keep would-be draft dodgers in. Signed by Canada's minister of foreign affairs, John Manley, and U.S. Homeland Security director, Tom Ridge, the declaration involves a 30-point plan which implements, among other things, a "pre-clearance agreement" of people entering and departing each country. Reforms aimed at making the draft more equitable along gender and class lines also eliminates higher education as a shelter. Underclassmen would only be able to postpone service until the end of their current semester. Seniors would have until the end of the academic year.

Even those voters who currently support US actions abroad may still object to this move, knowing their own children or grandchildren will not have a say about whether to fight. Not that it should make a difference, but this plan, among other things, eliminates higher education as a shelter and includes women in the draft.

The public has a right to air their opinions about such an important decision.

Please send this on to all the friends, parents, aunts and uncles, grandparents, and cousins that you know. Let your children know too -- it's their future, and they can be a powerful voice for change!

Please also contact your representatives to ask them why they aren't telling their constituents about these bills -- and contact newspapers and other media outlets to ask them why they're not covering this important story.

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/06/02/opinion/02EXUM.htmlCHATTANOOGA,
Tenn. - Many Americans, feeling that we did not have enough troops in Iraq,
were pleased when the Defense Department announced last month that 20,000
more soldiers were being sent to put down the insurgency and help rebuild
the country. Unfortunately, few realized that many of these soldiers would
serve long after their contractual obligations to the active-duty military
are complete. In essence, they will no longer be voluntarily serving their
country. These soldiers are falling victim to the military's "stop-loss"
policy - and as a former officer who led some of them in battle, I find
their treatment shameful. Announced shortly after the 9/11 attacks and
authorized by President Bush, the stop-loss policy allows commanders to hold
soldiers past the date they are due to leave the service if their unit is
scheduled to be deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. Military officials rightly
point out that stop-loss prevents a mass exodus of combat soldiers just
before a combat tour.But nonetheless, the stop-loss policy is wrong;
it runs contrary to the concept of the volunteer military set up in the
aftermath of the Vietnam War. Many if not most of the soldiers in this
latest Iraq-bound wave are already veterans of several tours in Iraq and
Afghanistan. They have honorably completed their active duty obligations.
But like draftees, they have been conscripted to meet the additional needs
in Iraq.Among them are many of my former comrades in the Second Brigade
of the 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Drum, N.Y. In the aftermath of
the Sept. 11 attacks, I led a platoon of light infantry first to Kuwait in
2001 and then in combat in Afghanistan during Operation Anaconda in 2002. My
men had all enlisted before the 9/11 attacks. In Kuwait and Afghanistan,
they performed flawlessly, with several earning commendations for bravery in
combat.Yet even after two deployments to Afghanistan, and with many
nearing the end of their commitments, these soldiers will have to head to
Iraq this summer and remain there for at least a year. I remain close with
them, and as the unit received its marching orders a few called me to
express their frustration. To a man, they felt a sense of hopelessness -
they know they have little say over their future until the Army releases
them.I grew angry when my former radio operator told me the Army had
canceled his orders to return home to San Francisco this month to start
college. Another man had been due to leave the Army just two days after the
order was given, but was instead told to draw his gear and prepare for 12
months in the desert. And as stressful as these orders are for the soldiers,
imagine what their families are feeling. Theirs are lives interrupted by
the needs of Iraq.I wonder if I might have been affected too had I
stayed at Fort Drum until the end of my service. (Instead, I left a year and
half ago to complete my four-year obligation with a special operations unit
in Iraq and Afghanistan, and thus don't fall under the Fort Drum stop-loss
order.) I can imagine how angry and betrayed I would feel if, having served
my obligation to the military for my college scholarship, I were told I was
going to Iraq for a year against my wishes.Of course, I would have
done whatever was asked: as a commissioned officer, my oath of service to my
country never really ends. But for enlisted soldiers, men and women who sign
on with the Army for a predetermined period of service in lieu of
commissions, stop-loss is a gross breach of contract. These soldiers
have already been asked to sacrifice much and have done so proudly. Yet the
military continues to keep them overseas - because it knows that through
stop-loss it can do so legally, and that it will not receive nearly as much
negative

Retired general criticizes Iraq war
By DAVID E. REYNOLDS, UPI Correspondent

WASHINGTON, June 2 (UPI) -- Iraqis are taking more responsibility for their
country's future but in a process that should have had the U.S. personnel on
the sidelines much earlier, retired Marine Corps Gen. Anthony Zinni told the
Council on Foreign Relations.

The June 30 handover of sovereignty to an interim Iraqi government may mean
a declining role for the Pentagon's civilian leadership, which Zinni has
criticized since the war began.

We could be on the sidelines watching this process, Zinni said, noting the
Iraqi Governing Council's refusal to follow U.S. recommendations when
choosing the president of the interim government.

The former commander of U.S. troops in the Middle East continues his
criticism of the Bush administration's Iraq policy in a book co-written with
Tom Clancy.

Battle Ready is the fourth installment in Clancy's Commander Series,
written to teach about top U.S. military leaders.

The book is a mix of biography and autobiography, Zinni said. Although
Battle Ready spans the retired general's career, it is Zinni's criticism
of the Defense Department's civilian leadership that is drawing attention.

Zinni is one of several prominent retired generals who have criticized the
Pentagon's war planning. But he opposed the invasion of Iraq prior to the
start of the war. This was a surprise, given his support of President Bush
in the 2000 election and the war in Afghanistan.

Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein did not represent an imminent threat to U.S.
security, Zinni said Tuesday. Although he agreed Saddam was trying to
protect the remnants of an illegal weapons program, Zinni said Saddam could
not have attacked the United States with weapons of mass destruction.

I saw the intelligence -- it wasn't there, he said, referring to the lack
of proof that Saddam was an imminent threat to the United States.

The U.S. effort to contain the Iraqi leader by enforcing no-fly zones was
working, and toppling Hussein's government was unnecessary and served as a
distraction from the hunt for Osama Bin Laden, Zinni said.

But Zinni is no less forgiving of the Pentagon's plans for the
reconstruction. With better planning, the civilian leadership at the Defense
Department could have avoided many of the pitfalls that have plagued the
rebuilding effort, he said.

There wasn't enough thought or enough cultural sensitivity, Zinni said. A
well-trained U.S. military performed its job admirably, but planners should
have anticipated the challenges of the occupation, he added.

It's the civilian leadership, the guys in seersucker suits, that don't have
a clue at the Pentagon, he said.

He also said the United States was committed to going to war before it had
made any serious efforts at diplomacy. We were going to war in March no
matter what.

Ever since the Vietnam War, some argue that criticizing the country's
leadership is counterproductive to any war effort. But the former general
disagreed.

Whenever we commit soldiers, we owe them the rationale for putting their
lives at risk. The planning that went into the Iraq war and the occupation
did not measure up to the preparation shown by the military.

I bitterly feel we let them down, he said.

Despite his objection to the initial invasion and his continued attacks on
the occupation leadership, Zinni remains optimistic about the reconstruction
of Iraq. There is no reason to walk away from the belief that we can create
an Iraqi state, and they will work together.

But the need for more Iraqi involvement does not stop at diplomacy. The
extensive use of civilian contractors may be taking jobs away from Iraqis

The Trotskyites have obliterated the analytical backdrop of political
discourse. Right wing marxists argue with left wingers who promote
traditionally conservative values while the left wing gatekeepers
determine the parameters of political dissent. Amy Goodman, Michael
Moore and Tim Robbins play pat-a-cake while the deification of Noam
Chomsky continues unabated. The juicy thing is that the real truth
behind what has been done by our wonderful leaders has been pushed
into the same fetid backwater as UFO reports, crop circles and
sightings of the Loch Ness monster.

Ah! the stench of civilization decaying - it gets the buzzards twitchy
- so much to feed on; so little time!

Fahrenheit 9/11 was clearly not the best movie at
the 57th Cannes Film Festival. But it was undeniably
the defining film of the historical moment. And so, in
a festival that will be remembered for its good humor
and modest pleasures, Michael Moore's cauldron of
Bush-scalding agitprop enjoyed a visibility as
oversized as the director himself. Before it had been
publicly screened, his movie had already become the
 world's most famous documentary..

Moore is a master of feeding foreigners' anti-
American fantasies. At Cannes, I kept meeting
people who actually think that Moore is treated like
an outlaw in the U.S. – Can you get his books? one
woman asked me, blissfully oblivious that Moore's
face has become inescapable here. Naturally, he
played up Disney's refusal to let Miramax distribute
the film, and the Europeans – who think we don't
know about them – ate it up, actually believing that
his movie might not get exhibited in the U.S. Why
doesn't the film have a distributor? they'd demand,
and be shocked when my fellow critics told them the
truth: The real stumbling block isn't censorship but
moola. Keenly aware that Fahrenheit 9/11 is going to
make a fortune, Miramax and Moore were simply
doing what any CEO president like George W. Bush
would encourage them to do: holding out for the best
 possible deal.

Having pilloried Bowling for Columbine for its cheap
shots and tireless self-promotion, I found Fahrenheit
9/11 surprisingly disciplined in its purpose: to defeat
Bush in this fall's election. Although still too baggy,
this is not your usual Michael Moore picture. Gone
are the condescending interviews with ordinary
people, gone the moments when the camera grows
fixated on Moore's flabulously shambolic persona.
While the movie starts out with some uproarious
stuff, including a shot of Paul Wolfowitz sticking his
comb in his mouth before using it to slick back his
hair, it grows unexpectedly somber, becoming a
scathing portrait of Bush's response to 9/11, from the
War on Terror to the invasion of Iraq. Weaving
together countless facts that you probably already
know, Moore doesn't pretend to offer a
groundbreaking exposé (which is what conservative
critics chide it for failing to be). Rather, he presents a
compelling counter-narrative of the Bush presidency,
an antidote to all those Republican ads you see on
TV. It actually could help swing the election.

Watching Fahrenheit 9/11, I kept thinking the
Democrats ought to hire him to make their spots – it's
miles better than anything the Kerry team has come
up with. Moore is as good as Karl Rove at finding

Title: Re: [cia-drugs] Dan the man Senor and
Wing TV and Quest
-Caveat Lector-

It is a warning not so say anything that
can be quoted out of context, aka, anything.

Twisting serious wonderment whether I was dealing with a Sock Puppet
or two humans or multiple personalities into a caricture of paranoia
against me was quite unfair.

Unfair? You accused me of being a government agent,
accused questionsquestions.net of causing the crash of your server and
speculated that I didn't exist, all without any evidence whatsoever.
And you called my article evil. If you don't want to
be called paranoid, don't say things that are paranoid.

If there were such a thing as satire, it
should apply to interchangable wings and engines that just so happen
to be the very same shape so you can't tell which is which, but this
is perfectly normal and happens all the time to 767s. 767 mechanics
are fit to be tied that 767 wings and engines can't be told apart.
That was satire.
See?
You can't tell what's satire anymore
without holding up a sign, and maybe not even then.

You're desperately searching for something, anything that gives
you something to complain about.

The wings cast a shadow on the building. Claiming that the
plane in the video had no wings is a joke. Plus the fuselage is
roughly the length of a 767. The width of the shadow cast by the
wings shows a plane the size of a 767. I've said all this before
and you've ignored it before and I expect you'll ignore it again.
You seem to not realize that everyone but you and your shrinking
no-plane posse demands facts and rational analysis.

I was equivocal on the identification of the wings and engines in
the image because video blurs small details, as I explained in my
article. In the particular image of which we speak, I felt that
the engine could have been responsible for a substantial part of what
is visible to the left and right of the fuselage and that the visual
information of the engine and wing probably blurred together because
of the extremely small resolution. Therefore I said wing
or engine. I was being responsible by not coming to
a decisive conclusion when the evidence doesn't justify it, and you
tried to make something out of that. You don't know about being
cautious with the evidence, do you?

KILLER RASH BREAKS OUT

By SAM SMITH

THE SUPERBUG: One new case a week of MRSA is being detected in some New York City
clinics.

  Email Archives
 Print Reprint

May 30, 2004 -- EXCLUSIVE

A vicious skin infection resistant to all but the most powerful antibiotics has jumped
out of New York City hospitals and onto the streets.

The superbug, as health officials refer to it, can cause anything from reddening of
the skin, to abscesses, tissue loss, amputation or even death in severe cases, doctors
said.

For decades confined to hospitals, where it preyed on patients and built up immunity
to antibiotics, the bug - known officially as Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus
Aureus or MRSA - has also grown in strength.

Usually with infections you need a break in the skin to pass it, said Dr. Howard
Grossman, who has a private practice in Chelsea.

Not with this. It gets through unbroken skin with casual contact.

The city Department of Health first detected the infections outside hospitals early
last year, according to health officials.

Doctors at some clinics, such as the Callen-Lorde Community Health Center in Chelsea,
are seeing one new case a week, compared with one every two months when the infection
first cropped up last year.

This is something we should be concerned about, said Dr. Dawn Harbatkin, the
center's medical director.

Dr. Brian Saltzman of Beth Israel, who has just completed a study of the spread of
MRSA outside hospitals, said, We are seeing very impressive, very large, very
difficult-to-treat skin abscesses.

The Department of Health is tracking the outbreak here but declined to provide the
number of cases it has found.

Last month, Steven, who asked that his last name not be published, developed what he
thought was a pimple on his leg, but it soon grew painful and larger.

Doctors lanced the boil that formed and began antibiotics, but the infection failed to
respond and starting growing toward Steven's groin.

The fact it wasn't responding [to drugs] and it was moving up that way was
terrifying, he said. It was eating up tissue.

After a lengthy hospital stay and five antibiotics - some administered intravenously
and one, Zyvox, administered orally at $100 per tablet - the infection started to
abate.

Doctors told Steven they believed he contracted it at the gym. Keith, who lives in
West New York, N.J., has been battling MRSA for months, with the infection cropping up
on his legs, then his face, then back on his legs. The doctor treating him says the
infection has colonized inside him. He believes Keith contracted it from a friend.

In New York City hospitals, about 50 percent of infections are now resistant to some
kind of antibiotic, as opposed to 10 percent a decade ago, according to several local
infectious-disease specialists.

According to an Institute of Medicine report last year, 80,000 people die each year in
the United States from hospital-acquired infections.

The city is not aware of anyone dying of MRSA acquired outside hospitals.

There are now three antibiotics left that can attack MRSA: vancomysin, daptomycin and
linezolid. But those antibiotics are beginning to lose their potency against the bug.

The Great Escape: 300 Saudis in 55
Planes By Craig Unger
The New York Times
Tuesday 01 June 2004
...new evidence shows that the evacuation involved more than
the departure of 142 Saudis on six charter flights that the commission is
investigating. According to newly released documents, 160 Saudis left the
United States on 55 flights immediately after 9/11 - making a total of about
300 people who left with the apparent approval of the Bush administration, far
more than has been reported before.
Americans who think the 9/11 commission is going to
answer all the crucial questions about the terrorist attacks are likely to be
sorely disappointed - especially if they're interested in the secret evacuation
of Saudis by plane that began just after Sept. 11.
We knew that 15 out of 19 hijackers were Saudis. We
knew that Osama bin Laden, a Saudi, was behind 9/11. Yet we did not conduct a
police-style investigation of the departing Saudis, of whom two dozen were
members. of the bin Laden family. That is not to say that they were complicit in
the attacks.
Unfortunately, though, we may never know the real
story. The investigative panel has already concluded that there is "no credible
evidence that any chartered flights of Saudi Arabian nationals departed the
United States before the reopening of national airspace." But the real point is
that there were still some restrictions on American airspace when the Saudi
flights began.
In addition, new evidence shows that the evacuation
involved more than the departure of 142 Saudis on six charter flights that the
commission is investigating. According to newly released documents, 160 Saudis
left the United States on 55 flights immediately after 9/11 - making a total of
about 300 people who left with the apparent approval of the Bush administration,
far more than has been reported before. The records were released by the
Department of Homeland Security in response to a Freedom of Information Act
request filed by Judicial Watch, a conservative, nonpartisan watchdog group in
Washington.
The vast majority of the newly disclosed flights were
commercial airline flights, not charters, often carrying just two or three Saudi
passengers. They originated from more than 20 cities, including Chicago, Dallas,
Denver, Detroit and Houston. One Saudi Arabian Airlines flight left Kennedy
Airport on Sept. 13 with 46 Saudis. The next day, another Saudi Arabian Airlines
flight left with 13 Saudis.
The panel has indicated that it has yet to find any
evidence that the F.B.I. checked the manifests of departing flights against its
terror watch list. The departures of additional Saudis raise more questions for
the panel. Richard Clarke, the former counterterrorism czar, told The Hill
newspaper recently that he took full responsibility for approving some flights.
But we don't know if other Bush administration officials participated in the
decision.
The passengers should have been questioned about any
links to Osama bin Laden, or his financing. We have long known that some faction
of the Saudi elite has helped funnel money to Islamist terrorists -
inadvertently at least. Prince Ahmed bin Salman, who has been accused of being
an intermediary between Al Qaeda and the House of Saud, boarded one of the
evacuation planes in Kentucky. Was he interrogated by the F.B.I. before he left?

If the commission dares to address these issues, it
will undoubtedly be accused of politicizing one of the most important national
security investigations in American history - in an election year, no less.
But if it does not, it risks something far worse -
the betrayal of the thousands of people who lost their lives that day, not to
mention millions of others who want the truth.

An Open Letter to John Conyers
The War Crimes of Bush, Cheney and Co.
By TOM STEPHENS and JOHN PHILO
Dear Congressman Conyers:
We write to ask that you take the lead in efforts to appoint special counsel to investigate the top officials of the current US Government executive branch and their leading co-conspirators. The targets of this proposed investigation include, but are not limited to George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, Condoleeza Rice, Colin Powell, Stephen Cambone, Douglas Feith, Lewis Libbey, Richard Perle, Elliott Abrams, Michael Ledeen, James Woolsey, Newt Gingrich, and John Ashcroft.
The subject matter of this proposed investigation is the conduct of the so-called "war on terrorism," and the illegal and catastrophic US war of aggression against Iraq. Specifically, we believe that these individuals and others conspired to commit war crimes, crimes against peace, crimes against humanity, and to cover up their wrongdoing in connection with these crimes. These crimes include systematic violations of fundamental human rights guaranteed by the UN Charter, the Geneva Conventions, the Convention on Torture, the Alien Tort Claims Act, lying to Congress and to other federal officials, and violations of other laws, treaties and obligations, including internal regulations of the Department of Defense and the Department of Justice. The end result of this pattern of flagrant, wanton, systematic and intentional wrongdoing, by the highest executive and civilian military officials in the US Government, is the disastrous military, diplomatic and
political situation facing the United States, and the men and women on active duty in US military forces in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere today.
First these officials conspired to start an unlawful war of aggression, justified by lies. Then they carried out their illegal conspiracy. It included unlawful killing of thousands of Iraqi civilians, destruction of civilian infrastructure, and use of weapons of mass destruction like cluster bombs and depleted uranium against the civilian population of Iraq. Throughout this conspiracy, they have implemented policies and practices for unlawful arrests, detention, interrogation, beatings, abuse, humiliation and torture, in violation of fundamental human rights protected by law. As a result of their misconduct, the dangers of international terrorism have been severely inflamed, international friends and allies turned away, and the security of our people imperiled. The true aims of the administration are revealed in its legally required policy statement to Congress of September 20, 2002, when it stated that the awful crimes against humanity of September 11,
2001 in New York and Washington, DC "opened vast, new opportunities." (The National Security Strategy of the United States," Section VIII, Development Agendas for Cooperative Action with the Other Main Centers of Global Power) In seizing these "opportunities" to enrich their corporate supporters and increase their own power through aggression, the top officials of this administration have committed "high crimes and misdemeanors" that justify their removal from office and their criminal punishment under law.

Rumors Of Unusual Naval Deployments? From Isaac6-2-4

Hello Mr. Rense

There are many rumors flying around the internet concerning the deployment of a large number of U.S. military and navy ships. This is causing all sorts of questions, one being of course why? Where are they going? Is some big "event" or terrorist attack about to occur?

Not only that, but, apparently, large numbers of naval fleets from many other countries are heading out to sea, as well!

Is there anything to this? Have you heard anything or have any insight to this information?

I appreciate your time and thank you in advance for your reply.

Note - The lengthy, mostly speculative report below is in rather wide net
circulation and is causing some interest onilne. We are presenting it as
a point of information only. -ed

Is 'Snowball' A Coincidence?

Executive Summary

A supposed intercept of a U.S. military SSB radio transmission on 26 January of this year referred to a mysterious "countdown" to an unnamed event which (by the countdown) will occur around June 19 or 20 of this year. In the past few weeks, however, naval units worldwide have been putting to sea in unusual numbers, sufficient to cause us to revisit the original message to assess movements and adopt a watch mode going forward into the June 19-20 date area.

Details:

I was not planning on doing a special weekend report but four things happened that prompt me to share some speculation with you. The four items?

*
Historical: I happened to think about the piece on "Snowball Net" which, if you might recall, was a supposed intercepted radio communication between U.S. military units that I posted on this site in March. Click here for the original link and scroll down to "For the Truly Paranoid..." http://www.urbansurvival.com/nl03262004.htm Here's what it said:

"Want to be paranoid about something akin to Planet X showing up before November? Here's a snip which I received by email yesterday - a bit aged, but interesting nevertheless:

A member of our ham radio club intercepted this transmission and shared it with a few of us. He made a digital recording of it. The transmissions took place on 1-26-04 staring at 0:5:00 UTC. The frequency was 11.176 mhz, USB.

The conversation is between SNOWBALL NET and another station. We assume SNOWBALL is the network operator.

Here is a transcript:

SNOWBALL NET: Snowball Net comms check. All stations, clock sync, (pause) impact at minus 146 days, 5 hours UTC. Standby for ACC link (could have been ACD).

Burst of digital data|

Burrow: SNOWBALL This is BURROW (could be Burro as in donkey). You are not secure| repeat not secure | go green | go green |

Bursts of white noise follow for approximately 3 minutes.

Copies of this have been posted on several ham boards and have been sent to Popular Communications Magazine.

OK, so that by itself is curious, although the author may have been hoaxing (or breaking provisions of the Communications Act of 1933 rules about unauthorized disclosure of third-party traffic, but we'll assuming hoaxing, right? But now add a second data point to this, the odd story of British military cavers being trapped in Mexico reported at http://news.lycos.com/news/forms/printstory.asp?section=SciencestoryId=840084

*
Note: This link was valid at the time posted, but has been purged from Lycos!

This British military in Mexico caves story has us wondering what the military guys are doing in caves? And who packs in that much

(satire alert)

Al Qaeda Endores Bush for Re-Election
by Al Qaeda Friday March 19, 2004 at 03:01 PM

Terrorists Thank Allah For America's 'Holy Idiot'

POSTED: 11:19 a.m. EST March 18, 2004

CAIRO, Egypt -- An Islamic militant group claiming responsibility for
the train bombings in Spain endorsed a second term for President
George W. Bush yesterday, praising his idiocy and religious
fanaticism, which the group said is helping to wake up the Islamic
world.

In the statement, the group praised Allah for raising up the perfect
leader to advance their cause, citing direct and plenary inspiration in
Bush's calling the War on Terror a crusade, turning the stomach of the
entire world with constant lying and aggression, and placing
thousands of U.S. soldiers in hopeless battle positions in the heart of
the Middle East.

Truly we are blessed, said Mullah Omar from his mountain hideout in
Afghanistan. Never in our wildest imaginings could we have hoped
for a gift more precious than Bush. He is the poster boy of our
international movement. Even many Western analysts say that Bush's
Operation Sitting Duck in Iraq is providing cheap and accessible
apprenticeships for aspiring terrorists intending to graduate to targets
inside the U.S. after getting some local experience under their belt.

Islamic recruiters from Cairo to Western China say the phone has
been ringing off the wall since Bush launched his world domination
crusade. I get no peace, complained a Moroccan recruiter. All day
and far into the night it's the same thing, one desperate voice
after another begging to be allowed to help expel 'The Mother of all
Idiots.' I barely get a chance to see my family anymore.

Nevertheless, some recruiters are daring to speculate that Bush's
penchant for self-destruction may eventually make Al Qaeda terror
obsolete. It's not hard to foresee a situation where Bush economic
policies will destroy the U.S. outright without the aid of a single
terrorist bombing, said Diaa Rashwan of the Institute For Suicide
Analysis in Islamabad. At that point blowing up individual targets
in a collapsing infrastructure won't make much sense.

Western terror experts are expressing concern over increasing
perceptions of Bush as the world's number one terrorist even among
non-Muslims. According to a recent Pew poll 94% of the world's
non-Muslim population rates Bush more destructive than the H-bomb.
At least with the H-bomb, there is a way to dismantle it, said one
respondent. But with Bush, the scale of disaster just keeps
widening. There's no end to it.

Al Qaeda's endorsement of Bush raises the intriguing possibility of
its sleeper cells in the U.S. campaigning for his election. With
lots of ready cash the organization may find that leafleting for the
GOP is the most cost-effective way to bring down the United States.
Apparently many Al Qaeda recruits are beginning to feel that the
self-hatred of the Republicans is more powerful than the purest
streams of anti-American loathing on their part. Since very few
self-respecting terrorists are prepared to admit they have superiors
in the hatred department, this type of conclusion tends to be faced
only gradually.

It's a psychological barrier, a kind of denial mechanism, says
Psychiatrist John Blodgett at Johns Hopkins University. Terrorists
pride themselves on belonging to the most destructive and fearsome
group in the world. But this Bush gang is a nihilist's wet dream. No
one really compares to them in the power of their malevolence. Hard
as it is to face, more and more Al Qaeda members are reluctantly
beginning to admit it.

The obvious policy conclusion has been stated in the latest and
shortest video ever from Osama Bin Laden. Four more years!

Coming Soon
The Return of the Draft, a Bipartisan Production
By JACOB LEVICH
June 1, 2004
http://www.duckdaotsu.org/bipartisan_draft.html
Barring a sudden reversal in the direction of US foreign policy, a strong bipartisan push to reinstate the draft can be expected soon after the November elections. Whether or not Bush wins is irrelevant. The logic of empire requires more boots on the ground, and conscription looks like the only way to get them.
In fact the campaign for the draft is already under way, though election-year politics have dictated a nuanced approach. Long-dormant draft boards have been quietly reactivated and restaffed -- even as the Bush administration continues to claim, in the face of mounting evidence to the contrary, that current troop levels are sufficient.
Meanwhile, a consensus behind conscription is building on Capitol Hill. Senators Chuck Hagel (R-Neb) and Joseph Biden (D-Del), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, are among many prominent politicians suddenly calling for a "national debate" on the draft. Open supporters of the draft include Sen. Ernest Hollings (D-SC) and Reps. Nydia Velazsquez (D-NY), Pete Stark (D-Cal), and Charles Rangel (D-NY). HR 163 and S 89, Democrat-sponsored bills to restore conscription, are quietly working their way through committee. According to The Hill, Republicans are ready to sign on as soon as they get the nod from the Bush administration.
Because the draft is potentially a catalyst for student protest, many leftists are happy to believe that the Establishment would never dare to reintroduce it. But that view fails to take into account the tremendous post-Seattle expansion of the state's repressive apparatus. Now that protest pens, mass arrests, chemical crowd control, and embedded journalists have become the norm at major demonstrations, the powerful may well believe that they have little to fear from free speech.
In any case, pro-draft forces appear willing to assume any downside risks involved in reviving conscription. A quick survey of the state of the empire shows why.
At this writing the US military is deeply mired in Iraq, fighting a brutal war of counterinsurgency that has stretched the 1.4-million strong, all-volunteer military to the limit. The Army has 10 active-duty divisions; nine of these are either in Iraq or Afghanistan, have just returned, or are about to be deployed there.
Hundreds of enlistees are killed or wounded every month. Tours are being extended and enlistments prolonged. Troops are even being transferred to Iraq from strategically critical US bases in South Korea. The 138,000 US soldiers officially stationed in Iraq have been quietly supplemented with at least 10,000 private military contractors; i.e., mercenaries. Even so, as recent events in Falluja and Najaf make clear, all these bodies are not nearly enough to sustain the occupation.
While conceding that the Iraq war has been a military and political disaster, the US power elite -- ranging from George Bush, to the New York Times editorial board, to Presidential candidate John Kerry -- agree that we must "stay the course" in Iraq. In plain language, that means crushing resistance to the occupation. To subdue a population that wants us to leave, and is increasingly willing to fight for independence, will require many more troops -- as many as 500,000, according to pre-war Pentagon estimates.

Bilderberg: The ultimate conspiracy theory

By Jonathan Duffy BBC News Online The Bilderberg group, an elite coterie of Western thinkers and power-brokers, has been accused of fixing the ffate of the world behind closed doors. As the organisation marks its 50th anniversary, rumours are more rife than ever.
Given its reputation as perhaps the most powerful organisation in the world, the Bilderberg group doesn't go a bundle on its switchboard operations.
Telephone inquiries are met with an impersonal female voice - the Dutch equivalent of the BT Callminder woman - reciting back the number and inviting callers to "leave a message after the tone".
Anyone who accidentally dialled the number would probably think they had stumbled on just another residential answer machine.

Leiden in Holland, the inauspicious base of the Bilderberg groupBut behind this ultra-modest façade lies one of the most controversial and hotly-debated alliances of our times.
On Thursday the Bilderberg group marks its 50th anniversary with the start of its yearly meeting.
For four days some of the West's chief political movers, business leaders, bankers, industrialists and strategic thinkers will hunker down in a five-star hotel in northern Italy to talk about global issues.
What sets Bilderberg apart from other high-powered get-togethers, such as the annual World Economic Forum (WEF), is its mystique.
Not a word of what is said at Bilderberg meetings can be breathed outside. No reporters are invited in and while confidential minutes of meetings are taken, names are not noted.
The shadowy aura extends further - the anonymous answerphone message, for example; the fact that conference venues are kept secret. The group, which includes luminaries such as Henry Kissinger and former UK chancellor Kenneth Clarke, does not even have a website.

DISCREET AND ELITE

This year Bilderberg has announced a list of attendees
They include BP chief John Browne, US Senator John Edwards, World Bank president James Wolfensohn and Mrs Bill Gates
In the void created by such aloofness, an extraordinary conspiracy theory has grown up around the group that alleges the fate of the world is largely decided by Bilderberg.
In Yugoslavia, leading Serbs have blamed Bilderberg for triggering the war which led to the downfall of Slobodan Milosevic. The Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh, the London nail-bomber David Copeland and Osama Bin Laden are all said to have bought into the theory that Bilderberg pulls the strings with which national governments dance.
And while hardline right-wingers and libertarians accuse Bilderberg of being a liberal Zionist plot, leftists such as activist Tony Gosling are equally critical.
A former journalist, Mr Gosling runs a campaign against the group from his home in Bristol, UK.
"My main problem is the secrecy. When so many people with so much power get together in one place I think we are owed an explanation of what is going on.

Timothy McVeigh was among those who believed the conspiracy theoryMr Gosling seizes on a quote from Will Hutton, the British economist and a former Bilderberg delegate, who likeneed it to the annual WEF gathering where "the consensus established is the backdrop against which policy is made worldwide".
"One of the first places I heard about the determination of US forces to attack Iraq was from leaks that came out of the 2002 Bilderberg meeting," says Mr Gosling.
But "privacy, rather than secrecy", is key to such a meeting says Financial Times journalist Martin Wolf, who has been invited several times in a non-reporting role.
"The idea that such meetings cannot be held in private is fundamentally totalitarian," he says. "It's not an executive body; no decisions are taken there."
As an up-and-coming statesmen in the 1950s,

Subject: [FUTURE-CITIES] NDP Future Cities

Dear Mr. Layton:

You might get lucky and become the first NDP Prime Minister by the end of
this month when Canada votes. You have said Canada should put 10,000
windmills across the country. Macphail and Kwan on VOBC talked about NDP
policy on closed-containment fish farming or inland fish farming which
is a huge industry in China and even in America.

William McDonough, former Dean of Architecture at U Virginia believes we
can build affordable pollution-free cities now. You might wish to talk to
former BC MLA David Mitchell at U Ottawa on municipal corporations in
which the citizens are explicitly given shares or stock in the
corporation. Could they not be put on the stock exchanges of the world?

Why not string these future cities across Canada as a new northern
corridor of population along with the wind-mills and other economic
factors which will still sustain a pollution-free economy for the
cities?

The population of Canada increases by 300,000/year so why not also plan
one Winter City of 300,000/year for 10 years and add 3,000,000 to the
northern population?

You could start with the nucleus of a small town or build totally anew but
in either case, the expansion would have to meet the most rigorous of
criteria: little or no pollution, traffic congestion and traffic
fatalities nil or almost nil, zero homelessness, only marginal
unemployment etc.

[CTRL] question: Re Northern Alaska

2004-06-03 Thread William Bacon
-Caveat Lector-

This question refers specifically to Northern Alaska where tremendous oil
and gas reserves are located. This area is artic wasteland for at least
nine months out of the year, the wildlife there are able to survive the
horribly cold winter. Could someone explain how development of the oil
and natural gas resources possibly affect the wildlife in Northern
Alaska?

There is an existing oil production operation at Prudhoe
bay(Check my energy web page at A
HREF=http://www.voicenet.com/~wbacon/Energy.html; My Energy web
page/A) with no evidence of negative effect on the wildlife population,
in fact the elk population has actually increased!

So what's the basis of the alleged fear that the wildlife population
would be negatively affected? Remember, this is the basis the self
appointed environmental militants are using to
deny the United States badly needed oil and gas resources which would
under the political control of the United States not somebody in the
volatile middle east. Could this simply be a pre-text for a hidden agenda?
If not, why not?

Re: [CTRL] question: Re Northern Alaska

2004-06-03 Thread Prudy L
-Caveat Lector-

The elk population is increasing in Alaska, because the idiots are shooting the wolves from helicopters so that the tourist hunters will be able to get an elk without having to work hard. As for the oil business coexisting with wild life, it doesn't have to be a problem, but the oil business is run by greedy slobs who do not take care with their procedures or their product. It costs a little money to be sure that everything is done neatly and timed correctly. Look at the mess the pipeline is. Look at the tundra that used to be where it is. Think about it. If a banker put his and your money in a big slide, piped it somewhere and loaded it into ships and tankers without any special care, and some (sometimes a lot) of the money just fell into the water or where ever it happened to be at the time, you'd think he was a moron. Well oil seems to be everywhere doesn't it? Ships that should be scrapped are transporting that precious product everywhere, going aground, and sometimes sinking. Don't worry about having to double hull them to keep from more Exxon disasters. Bush the First made sure that the oil boys didn't have to spend that kind of money in the interest of the environment, and I'm sure that Bush the Second has done lots of kind things for the same oil boys that we don't even know about. Besides it's sour crude. The oil boys aren't really too crazy about theidea of having to refine it. Theyjust want to sell it to Japan. Prudy

Diocese hearing could include renowned priest By Todd Ruger 6/2/04 "The plaintiffs have responded to that motion with almost 300 pages of legal arguments and church documents they say shows a "chilling story" of a diocese coverup of sexual abuse more than 30 years ago by three diocese priests, including documents as recent as a February report from Bishop William Franklin. The plaintiffs claim the diocese prevented the men from filing timely lawsuits by fraudulently concealing other abuse allegations against the priests - the Rev. James Janssen, the Rev. Francis Bass and the Rev. Theodore Geerts. Janssen and other priests have denied all accusations of sexual abuse in court records. Earlier this month, a Lee County district judge denied a similar attempt by the diocese to dismiss a sex-abuse lawsuit filed in that county, saying that statute of limitations issues would be best decided by a jury." http://www.qctimes.com/internal.php?story_id=1029068t=Local+Newsc=2,1029068

Elite power brokers' secret talks by Emma Jane Kirby BBC correspondent in Paris "The world's financial and political elite are to hold a closed meeting in France on Thursday where delegates are expected to be focusing their attention on post war Iraq. The Bilderberg meeting will be held in Versailles just before the start of the Group of Seven meeting of finance ministers in nearby Paris. Henry Kissinger is believed to be attending this year. Bilderberg, which was founded in the 1950s by Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, is said to steer international policy from behind closed doors. Its critics say that it is a capitalist organisation which operates entirely through self interestThere are no members as such - instead, an invitation list is comprised each year by an unknown steering committee, but participants are mainly leading and powerful figures in the fields of business and politicsThe meetings are cloaked in secrecy and participants rarely reveal their attendanceWhat the group actually does is no clearer either, although it's known to be an extremely influential lobbying group with a good deal of political clout on both sides of the Atlantic." http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/3031717.stm

[CTRL] Invisible Enemy: Israel, Politics, Media and American Culture

2004-06-03 Thread William Shannon
http://www.wrmea.com/html/book_review.htm

Invisible Enemy: Israel, Politics, Media and American Culture

By Edward Abboud, Vox Publishing Co., UC-Reston, VA, 2001, 284 pp. (paper). List: $29.95 1.800.368.5788

Reviewed by Andrew I. Killgore

Edward Abbouds powerful new book, Invisible Enemy, explains how Israel, in a new kind of war, extracts $5 billion to $12 billion a year from the United States. Chapters two and three on conspiracy and propaganda are scholarly/theoretical, and will be heavy reading for many people.

Thereafter Abboud, a student of advertising and propaganda techniques, really gets rolling in chapters on the mass media, television and cinema, American society, the U.S. government and religious wars/ancient hatreds.

Abbouds old warfare in Invisible is the classic conquest of one nation by another to gain control of the conquered nations resources. The new Israel/Zionist war is a propaganda war, conducted by a foreign nation and its all-too-willing co-conspirators in the United States for the same purpose: to control, by well-focused and broad-based propaganda, billions in American taxpayers money annually transferred to Israel.

Abboud convincingly portrays Israel as a conspiratorial and invisible enemy of the United States. Take the example of the 60 or more misleadingly named pro-Israel political action committees. What ordinary American would ever suspect their true purpose: to elect congressmen and senators ready to give Israel what it wants, and to defeat those who wont do so. Such sneaky Israel/Zionist creations as Delaware Valley PAC, Florida Congressional Caucus or San Franciscans for Good Government can and have ganged up, in secret and in violation of electoral campaign finance laws, to play tricks on the American people by electing politicians they like and defeating those they dont.

The depressing, and disturbing, thesis of Invisible, supported by mountains of evidence, is that Israel/Zionism targets virtually every American institution and individual on behalf of the national state of Israel. Only Israel/Judaism are bathed in a rosy media light.

Actor Marlon Brando made this point in the most basic Anglo-Saxon terms and without regard for political correctness. Interviewed by CNNs Larry King in April 1996, Brando said Hollywood was run and owned by Jews. It had brought us the n- [African American], and the [Italian] Greaseball; weve seen the Chink, the slit-eyed Jap, we have seen the wily Filipina, weve seen everythingbut we never saw the Kike.

Edward Abboud documents that, since the late 1940s (when Israel was established), Zionism has tried to establish a link between a collective worldwide guilt for the Holocaust and support for Israel. Several years ago Professor Jack Shaheen documented the traditional Hollywood hatefulness of dumping on Arabs. Abboud illustrates Israels/Zionisms relentless media campaign of making symbolic transfers between Nazis/Arabs and all other ethnic and religious groups.

The Catholic Church is a favorite target. Abboud quotes William E. Simon, a former secretary of the treasury, as describing how the national news media delight in portraying the Catholic Church as an intolerant and anachronistic institution, out of touch with the times.

Arabs and Islam are fair game in Hollywood and on television. Invisible lists 43 films since 1967 that glorify heroic Israeli leaders and vilifiy Arabs.

Abboud documents the extraordinary numbers of Jewish officials in the Bill Clinton administration. The phenomenon was so outlandish, given that Jews are only 2 percent of the total American population, that some Washington observers referred to Clintons as the first all-Zionist administration. The mainline media rarely, if ever, mentioned that ethnic imbalance.

Another example of an ethnically imbalanced institution Abboud cites is National Public Radio. At NPR, he said, More Jews present more news about more Jews more often than any other radio or television station outside of Israel.

He describes the photos in the lobby of the NPR headquarters in Washington listing editors and producers of various programs. The photos of the janitorial staff are there, too. The purpose? To try to conceal the heavy ethnic imbalance.

The very great value of Invisible Enemy is that in one volume, and with hundreds of convincing examples, Abboud shines a clear light on a conspiratorial Israel and its Fifth Column in the United States. He describes the enormous effort in the media to portray Israel as an ally of the U.S. Part of that effort in movie, newspaper, magazine, book or lecture is a favorable presentation of Jews, always presented as American Jewsnot Jewish-Americans as other minorities are generally described.

Underlying Edward Abbouds Invisible Enemy is his recognition that Israel is a nation state. It represents the triumph of Jewish nationalismthe notion, sad as it is, that Jewish interests are separate from the interests of the many peoples around the
