The Justice Department raided medical pot farms, arrested medical pot distributors and threatened to prosecute doctors for recommending or prescribing marijuana to AIDS and cancer patients and other chronically ill people. Today, however, the Justice Department's medical marijuana war seems increasingly out of step with the whole country. Last fall, the Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling barring federal officials from prosecuting doctors for their recommendations. Two months ago, Vermont became the ninth state to let seriously ill patients use medicinal marijuana. And two weeks ago, the United Methodist Church, Presbyterian Church, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and other mainstream religious groups supported doctors' rights to prescribe pot as a when-all-else-fails treatment for the seriously ill. A House bill scheduled for a vote today would prohibit the use of federal funds to arrest and prosecute doctors, medical marijuana users and caregivers. A similar bill was defeated last year on a 273-152 vote. This year's bipartisan measure, by Reps. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Huntington Beach) and Sam Farr (D-Salinas), is not expected to pass either but is likely to pick up several more votes. Opponents increasingly don't deny the medical benefits of pot but still fear implicit sanctioning of its recreational use. The best way to thwart casual use of the drug is to let doctors prescribe it in closely circumscribed and carefully regulated ways. And under federal law, neither the courts nor legislatures can do that. Only the Drug Enforcement Administration can get at the root of the problem: its nonsensical classification of marijuana as a Schedule I substance, a taboo category for drugs such as heroin that have no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. The DEA should move marijuana to at least Schedule II, its slightly less prohibitive category for morphine and cocaine. That change isn't likely to happen in an election year. But as voters speak in more states, as the Supreme Court considers their right to do so, and medical journals and studies continue to find benefit in marijuana, the Justice Department should explicitly

Now imagine it was against the law to do so after having a glass of wine two weeks ago. Sound absurd? No more so than proposed legislation by U.S. Rep. Mark Souder mandating that each state enact laws sanctioning anyone who operates a motor vehicle while any detectable amount of a controlled substance is present in the person¹s body, as measured in the person¹s blood, urine, saliva, or other bodily substance. The expressed purpose of this legislation, H.R. 3922: the ³Drug Impaired Driving Enforcement Act of 2004,² is to remove drug-impaired drivers from our roadways, but in reality, this proposal would do little to improve safety. Rather it would falsely categorize sober drivers as ³intoxicated² simply if they had consumed an illicit substance, particularly marijuana, days or weeks earlier. Souder¹s proposal, recently added to the House transportation reauthorization bill, presumes individuals guilty of driving while intoxicated if even trace levels of a controlled substance or even drug metabolites (inactive compounds indicative of past drug use) are found in bodily fluids, even if the individual is neither under the influence nor impaired to drive. Marijuana metabolites are often detectable in urine for days or weeks after the drug is consumed. Imagine if we prosecuted recreational drinkers similarly. This unfunded federal mandate from Congress is unnecessary. All states already have DUID (driving under the influence of drugs) statutes on the books. Most focus on the totality of circumstances most importantly, whether the motorist is physically or mentally impaired and rightly punishes those who drive under the influence of illicit drugs. There is no need for additional legislation, especially from the federal government. While drug-impaired driving is obviously a serious issue, Souder¹s proposal neither addresses the problem nor offers a legitimate solution. ³Zero

-Caveat Lector- From Capitol Hill Blue Bush Leagues Cheney Faces Criminal Indictments; Other Illegal Actions Raise Warning Flags at White House By TERESA HAMPTON Editor, Capitol Hill Blue Jul 8, 2004, 04:59 Vice President Dick Cheney faces criminal indictments for illegal activities while CEO of energy giant Halliburton and also illegally intervened to secure a $7 billion no-bid contract for his former employer after his election to office, an analysis by the White House counsel's office concludes. The Vice President is currently under investigation by French authorities for bribery, money laundering and misuse of corporate assets while at Halliburton and also faces a U.S. Securities Exchange Commission probe of a $180 million slush fund that may have been used to pay bribes. Although the White House Counsel analysis is not available to the public because of the secrecy of attorney-client privilege, it has generated speculation among senior White House aides who suggest the Vice President should step down as President George W. Bush's running mate for the November Presidential elections. Such talk has increased in GOP circles lately with former New York Senator Alfonse D'Amato Wednesday calling on Bush to dump Cheney. Vice President Cheney Those who have read the analysis say it presents a devastating case against the Vice President and concludes Cheney has violated both the spirit and intent of federal laws on conflict of interest. Even worse, Cheney faces indictment by a French court on charges of bribery, money laundering and misuse of corporate assets because of fraud associated with the construction of a $6 billion petrochemical plant built by Halliburton in Nigeria in partnership with Technip, one of France's largest petrochemical engineering companies. Cheney is under investigation by Judge Renaud van Ruymbeke, one of France's famous investigating magistrates. Ruymbeke is a legend in legal circles because of his investigation into French campaign scandals in the 1990s, resulting in multiple indictments and convictions of top officials. Because of Ruymbeke's work on the case, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has opened an investigation into a $180 million slush fund that the French judge says was used to pay bribes. London Lawyer Jeffrey Tesler, a consultant to Halliburton, admitted under oath in May that he made payments from the fund to Albert Jack Stanley, president of Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg, Brown Root and a longtime friend and associate of Cheney. The payments, Tesler said, were personally approved by Cheney, who headed Halliburton at the time. Although Cheney left his position at Halliburton before becoming Vice President, his financial disclosure statements show he continues to receive dividends from stock as well as deferred compensation from the company. At least $5 million in payments to Stanley from the fund were wired to a secret numbered bank account in Zurich which Judge Ruymbeke discovered belonged to the KBR President. Tesler also testified he paid another $350,000 to another KBR executive, William Chaudran, through another secret bank account on the isle of Jersey. Cheney served as CEO of Halliburton from 1995 until 2000 and approved the Nigerian contract in 1999. Halliburton publicly announced on June 18 it was severing all ties with Stanley, admitting he had received improper personal benefits while serving as President of KBR. Sources within Halliburton say the company's internal investigation clearly implicates Vice President Cheney but acknowledge the investigation will remain sealed in light of the company's $7 billion sweetheart contract with the Pentagon for work in Iraq. French Judge Ruymbeke, however, is said to be offering Stanley a deal if he implicates Cheney and sources within the French legal system say the judge has more than enough to indict the Vice President on charges of bribery, money laundering and misuse of corporate assets. The assessment of the White House counsel's office agrees that Cheney faces serious legal implications from the pending French indictments and add that the Vice President's illegal and unethical lobbying on behalf of Halliburton for the no-bid contract raises additional questions. Cheney, however, is standing firm and recently told Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont to fuck off when the Senator questioned him on the Halliburton matters. According to White House sources, President George W. Bush laughed the matter off at a recent cabinet meeting. Fuck 'em all, Bush said. The President's bravado, however, is not shared by worried White House aides. Some point to the last vice president to step down because of fraud and corruption - Spiro T. Part of my enlightenment is my age, I can put this into a new framework after all these years. Now I understand far more fully what the Kennedy's stood for and why at my age I truly still adore them. Listen up, Kennedy fans, as these amazing human beings really were giving us the time of our lives and the direction of a fabulous Rennaissance. They were leading the way to a huge new, worldwide reform movement which to this day the so-called free world is still in desperate need of considering. Some salient facts from this television series which have taken me back are the following: 1) 1920- 1930 FANTASTIC EARLY 20th CENTURY ENTREPRENEURS Patriarch, Joe Patrick Kennedy Sr. (JPK) had insider info to the stock market which insulated his fortune and lead to him becoming the 10th wealthiest person in the U.S. during the depression and 1930s. Because of the depression, he set up solid trust funds for all his children which to this day have probably maintained the family. He had nine children with Rose, they all looked like he and Rose, and obviously most of these kids had their agility, brilliance and verve -- and this was amazingly special because the family were all Jesus bloodlines, Merovingian DNA, hence they carried a very special promise and attraction which was innate and very Irish. 2) 1939 - 1941 ATTEMPTED TO SOLIDIFY IRELANDS IRA FATE, KEEP U.S.A. OUT OF WWII When Joe Sr. became FDR's ambassador to England he broke huge new ground in the U.K. -- notorious for disliking the Irish, he was determined to break new ground for the Irish in Europe, to protect their heritage and lives as a colony of Britain, to possibly free Ireland from its vicious captive state by England. This was a major part of the reason Joe Kennedy approached FDR for this particular ambassador position. Once in England, the Kennedy family was adored, at least at first in 1939. They were like Princess Di, everywhere they went they were filmed, photographed, put on the front page. But, Joe opposed the U.S. getting into the war and the Kennedy's arrived in England just as Hitler was beginning raids in the London (1940). Joe sent the family members back to the U.S., he lived outside of London in a farm community for a few months. He urged FDR not to bring the U.S.A. into the war by joining Britain -- publicly and on videotape Joe Kennedy Sr. said about Hitler and the Jews when told some were being murdered by Hitler (at this point, Americans did NOT know what was going on in Germany) -- Kennedy said so what, they deserve it...[he was referring to the Jews]...they asked for this, so what if this happens... -- he was referring to Hitler's tactics and assaults. The point was that Kennedy Sr. was pro-Nazi, a fascist and very anti-Semitic. He had a reason, the Queen of England had sold out to Marxism and Jews nearly 100 years before, and the Irish had been plummeted by the Queen's Good Ole' Boys - their wonderful Jesus/Merovingian women raped, stolen ovum, and pillaged by Brits and Jews. The Irish were fed up with Jewish and British interference which had been so cleverly worked out that the Irish could not bring this out in public without loosing face or loosing their lives to these enemies. They were relying upon Roman Catholicism and the Pope to protect them and it did up until a point. Joe Sr.'s fascist beliefs meant Churchill hated him as Winston kept requesting the U.S.'s military help to stave off Hitler's advances. Kennedy, meanwhile, urged FDR to stay out of WWII, saying it was too risky. 3) 1942 - 1957 KENNEDY'S SUPPORTED MCCARTHY AND ANTI-COMMUNISM FDR followed Ambassador JPK's recommendations until Pearl Harbor at the very end of 1941. Then the U.S. joined the war full force with the planning of D Day, June 1942. JPK left England and gave up his ambassadorship. Churchill disliked Kennedy immensely for not supporting the British war effort. JPK put his funds and efforts into getting his sons elected into Congress as the youngest senators ever on record. While his oldest son died in an odd plane accident over Germany and his favorite daughter Kathleen married an odd Brit guy who supposedly died, then shortly afterwards she died in a car accident which was not explained. Congress has been looking into prisoner abuse, and Kirk is working for the agency that wrote a manual on torture and that may have been instrumental in the perpetration of these atrocities, said Goodman. You see, just prior to the year 1666 (perhaps in anticipation of the "666" of Revelation?) Kabbalistic scholar Nathan of Gaza was about 18 years old when the "angels" spoke to him and told him to preach that Sabatai Sevi was the Messiah of the Jews. The whole Sabbatean movement is pretty well documented, including the testimony that Nathan gave of his mystical experiences, and how his role was simply as a mouthpiece for the "angels" to direct Sevi's actions. It was all so believable that many of his followers were faithful and unfazed even when Sevi converted to Islam during his incarceration under the Turks. After yet another failed Messianic movement instigated by the "angels" of the Kabbalah, the Kabbalah was again discredited within Judaism. However, it remained a powerful force in occultism within the "Gentile" world, basically acting as a false "Judeo-Christian" link to the angels that were actually the spiritual forces of paganism that survived within the Hermetic documents that were translated during the Renaissance. And then as the Hermetic-Kabbalistic tradition evolved it eventually turned, first, into a viciously anti-Christian political force (Weishaupt's Illuminati was one of the first to actively plot against Christianity as a whole), and then also into an anti-Semitic political force (most notably with Helena Blavatsky's Theosophical movement that helped to inspire Hitler). Lately I have been doing a lot of research into the Templars and its offshoot the Freemasons, and I have been studying how this vast body of research connects with EIR's historical material that exposes the insidious role of Venice from the Crusades to the Thirty Years War (approx.1200-1650). The patients were children, women, old people and young men. Dr. Abu Madi related that there was a high number of cases of [tetany], spasm in legs and hands, connected to the nervous system. Pupils were dilated. Other symptoms included shock, semi-consciousness, hyperventilation, irritation and sweating." Thus reads a report by medical units serving the West Bank village of Al-Zawiya, where nonviolent resistance to Israel's impending wall has been extraordinarily resolute. According to the medical report (procured by the International Middle East Media Center [IMEMC]), "the gas used against the protestors is not tear gas but possibly a nerve gas." The following day, Israel's "Peace Bloc," Gush Shalom, began a press release with the following quote from Al-Zawiya: "What the army used here yesterday was not tear gas. We know what tear gas is, what it feels like. That was something totally different. When we were still a long way off from where the bulldozers were working, they started shooting things like this one (holding up a dark green metal tube with the inscription "Hand and rifle grenade no.400" - in English). Black smoke came out. Anyone who breathed it lost consciousness immediately, more than a hundred people. They remained unconscious for nearly 24 hours. One is still unconscious, at Rapidiya Hospital in Nablus. They had high fever and their muscles became rigid. Some needed urgent blood transfusion. Now, is this a way of dispersing a demonstration, or is it chemical warfare?" The incident in Al-Zawiya appears to be the tenth attack by Israeli soldiers using an "unknown gas" against Palestinian civilians since early 2001. We have photographs of the canisters. We have film of victims suffering in the hospital. We have interviews with Palestinian and European doctors who have treated the victims. And we presumably have hundreds, perhaps thousands, of survivors. But we know nothing of their fate. Despite the evidence, we have not inquired. Though it is a state secret, Israel's development of chemical and biological weapons has been known and analyzed for decades. From the typhoid poisoning of Palestinian wells and water supplies in 1948 to the conversion of F-16s into nerve gas "crop dusters" in 1998, Israel has always demonstrated a strong interest in developing CBW agents and methods for their dispersal. In 1992 an El Al 747 flying nerve gas ingredients from the U.S. to Israel crashed into an Amsterdam apartment building. According to Salman Abu-Sitta, president of the Palestine Land Society, the respected Dutch daily NRC Handelsblad followed up the crash with an in-depth investigation of the Israel Institute for Biological Research (IIBR), Israel's CBW complex in Nes Ziona. The paper reportedly found "strong links" with several U.S. CBW and medical research centers, "close cooperation between IIBR and the British-American biological warfare program," and "extensive collaboration on BW research with Germany and Holland." At IIBR, doctors publish world-class research in acetylcholine, the mother lode of nerve gas design. The Nes Ziona complex is reputed to have invented an "undetectable" poison-needle gun for "clean" assassinations. In September 1997, two days after Jordan's King Hussein told Israeli PM Netanyahu that Hamas was seeking negotiations, Mossad agents in Jordan attempted to kill Hamas leader Khaled Misha'al with a lethal dose of fentanyl. For years, rumors persisted that Israel was using or testing unknown chemical agents on Palestinian civilians. The rumors began to reveal their substance February 12, 2001, when Israel began a six-week campaign of "novel gas" attacks in the Gaza Strip and West Bank. By chance, American filmmaker James Longley arrived in Khan Younis, Gaza in the middle of the first attack. That afternoon he began filming the victims. Judge William H. Pauley III also narrowed last week the charges against the businessman, James H. Giffen, dismissing eight of 65 counts of the indictment against him. Giffen's company, the New York City-based Mercator Corp., was hired by the government of Kazakhstan in 1995 to help arrange for foreign companies to invest in the former Soviet Republic's extensive oil and gas fields. Mercator and Giffen, its chairman, who was named counselor to the president of Kazakhstan, were paid $67 million by the country for concluding six oil and gas deals. In April 2003, the U.S. government charged Giffen with diverting $78 million to Kazakhstan officials from payments made by the companies involved in the deals. Instead of the Kazakhstan treasury, the money went to Nurlan Balgimaev, Kazakhstan's former prime minister, and Nursultan Nazarbaev, its current president, the U.S. government says. The U.S. government has publicly said it is investigating the role of Mobil Oil, which secured through Giffen a 25 percent stake in the Tengiz oil field, one of Kazakhstan's largest, with estimated reserves of 6 billion barrels of oil. J. Bryan Williams, a former Mobil executive, was accused of receiving a $2 million kickback from Giffen. In September, Williams, who played an important role in Mobil's $1 billion Tengiz deal, was sentenced to nearly four years in prison for evading taxes on $7 million, including the $2 million kickback. According to a statement issued by Mobil, Williams, under oath in open court, asserted that the company had no knowledge of his receipt of the funds and denied the payments were a kickback for work done by Mobil. Giffen sought access to CIA and State Department records in an effort to mount a defense that he was working under the authority of the U.S. government. The government did not dispute that Giffen had frequent contacts with U.S. intelligence officials or that he used his contacts within the Kazakhstan government to promote U.S. interests. In a book entitled See No Evil: The True Story of a Ground Soldier in the CIA's War on Terrorism, the author, Robert Baer, described Giffen as the de facto ambassador to Kazakhstan. Judge Pauley wrote that Giffen had presented sufficient information from publicly available sources to permit discovery of potentially classified information. If the United States was encouraging Giffen to ingratiate himself to senior Kazakh officials, Judge Pauley wrote in U.S. v. Giffen,03-404, then [he] may be able to assert a public authority defense. In narrowing the indictment, Judge Pauley concluded that the U.S. government had gone too far in seeking to apply the federal wire and mail fraud statutes to schemes to deprive citizens of foreign nations of the intangible right to honest services of their government's leaders. While there are legions of precedents that would support the view that the two statutes would apply to the corruption of officials in this country, Judge Pauley wrote, the application of the law to the Kazakhstan citizenry is more ethereal. To apply the statutes in that context would be unconstitutionally vague, he ruled in what he said was apparently an issue of first impression. The man was arrested on 1 July when the suspect #8722; identified as El Houcine el H., of the southern Dutch city Weert #8722; applied for asylum in Belgium, Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant reported on Wednesday. A spokesman from the federal prosecution office in Brussels said that the suspect was accused of preparing an international terrorist attack from Belgium. He said the arrest was linked to arrests carried out on 8 June, when Belgian authorities raided homes in Brussels, Schaarbeek and Antwerp and arrested 15 people. The detainees #8722; who originate from Palestine, Jordan, Egypt and Morocco #8722; were accused of holding links with the Moroccan Islamic Combatant Group (GICM). Four suspects are still being held on remand. The four suspects are alleged to have formed an operational group that used Belgium as its base and could have been sent anywhere across the globe to carry out terrorist attacks. The terrorist cell was allegedly managed from Italy. Meanwhile, the brother-in-law of the Dutch suspect, Khalid B., who also lives in Weert, was previously arrested in the Netherlands on possible suspicion of involvement in the Casablanca attacks on 16 May 2003 which killed 43 people. Dutch police arrested B. #8722; who has both Belgian and Moroccan nationality #8722; during a routine traffic control in the Dutch province of Limburg in January. A check of his identity indicated that Morocco had issued an arrest warrant for him. Morocco has since requested the extradition of B. and the Roermond Court in the south of the Netherlands will hand down its ruling on Friday. The court previously ruled on 18 May that that it could not come to a judgement on the extradition request because the Moroccan documents were too vague. It requested more information. Morocco claims that B. underwent paramilitary training to become a member of GICM and was entrusted with setting up a Belgian terror cell and the recruitment of new members. Morocco bases its accusations on testimony from another GICM member. The two Moroccan brothers-in-law are almost certainly included on the list of 150 potential terrorists that Dutch secret service AIVD keeps under 24-hour surveillance. However, the directorate of special operations (DSO) has hit back, saying Banks came to them with the information that Phillips had asked him to kill a witness in the trial against him. According to sources in the DSO, Banks is now being investigated for possibly lying under oath and defeating the ends of justice. The bugged-shoe debacle has temporarily halted the trial of Phillips, who has pleaded not guilty to a number of prostitution-related charges including keeping two brothels, The Ranch and the Titty Twister. Phillips has lodged an application in the Johannesburg High Court seeking the removal from the case of investigator George Hardaker and the advocate in charge of the investigation, Rudolph Mastenbroek. Banks, they say, contacted the police saying that Phillips had asked him to kill a state witness. But is this a breaking story or just the latest chapter in a spy story that traces its roots back to the 1950's? While they may act like strangers in public, the press and the CIA have a sordid past that spans more than four decades. The CIA-Press Connection in the 1950s and 60s The CIA-press connection traces its roots back to the early days of the Cold War, when Allen Dulles (who became CIA director in 1953) began courting the nation's most prestigious journalistic institutions for Agency operations. The mood of the day precluded the need for secretive infiltration, as Carl Bernstein points out in his 1977 expose on the topic. American publishers, like so many other corporate and institutional leaders at the time, were willing to commit the resources of their companies to the struggle against global Communism, he writes. Accordingly, the line separating the American press corps was often indistinguishable. That's not to say that reporters acted as spies in the James Bond sense. Media outlets offered services that fell into the broad categories of providing cover for CIA operatives (i.e. jobs and credentials) or sharing information gathered by reporters on staff. While the Agency ran a formal training program in the 50's that attempted to teach rank-and-file agents to be reporters, this was among the least common of the more than 400 relationships with the press described in CIA files. Most involved were journalists before their involvement with the CIA began. Reporters, especially foreign correspondents, typically served as eyes and ears for the CIA. Often they were briefed by agents before a trip and debriefed when they returned; they shared their notebooks, relayed things that they had seen or overheard and offered their impressions. More complex arrangements found reporters planting misinformation for the Agency or serving as liaisons between agents and foreign contacts, often in return for information or access. In return for our giving them information, we'd ask them to do things that fit their roles as journalists but that they wouldn't have thought of unless we put it in their minds, one agent told Bernstein. For instance, a reporter in Vienna would say to our man, 'I met an interesting second secretary at the Czech Embassy.' We'd say, 'Can you get to know him? And after you get to know him, can you assess him? And then, could you put him in touch with us -- would you mind us using your apartment?' Another senior CIA official offered the following description of reporting by cooperating journalists: We would ask them, 'Will you do us a favor? We understand that you're going to be in Yugoslavia. Have they paved the streets? Where did you see planes? Were there any signs of military presence? How many Soviets did you see? If you happen to meet a Soviet, get his name and spell it right. It was a symbiotic relationship: reporters got the scoop and the spooks got the dirt. Correspondents with Agency ties were highly valued by their bosses for the stories they brought home. And agents saw in the press a perfect vehicle for information gathering: who else besides a reporter enjoyed such free access in a foreign

Scarcely did the Group of Eight announce its decision to create a global peacekeeping force but Congress was already in full swing to fulfill its end of this U.N. agenda. Introduced by Senate Foreign Relations Chair Richard Lugar (R-Ind.) on June 9 was S. 2514, The Global Peacekeeping Operations Initiative Act, allowing for the transfer of funds for foreign countries to participate in international peacekeeping or peace enforcement operations. Coincidentally, June 9 is also the day reports floated from Sea Island, Ga., that the meeting Group of Eight the United States, Britain, Germany, France, Canada, Japan, Russia and Italy set plans to create a 50,000-plus group of global peacekeepers by 2010. This plan comes with a hefty price tag; Americans will provide $660 million over the next five years for training and equipment. Senior administration officials briefing reporters at the scene of the G-8 summit said justification for this global force stems primarily from Africa, where tribal conflicts have raged for years. But "even though it's about Africa in the first instance," this official said, "it really is global in its ultimate scope, because the idea is to train peacekeepers and equip them and enable them to get where theyre needed all over the world" It would be more honest if the G-8 just announced its intent to create a standing global military, absent the flimsy excuse of concern for Africa and the unlikely promise that world-wide peacekeeping operations would remain unchanged, with volunteering nations maintaining operational control. The United States already involves itself with formal aid to Africa via the African Crisis Response Initiative and its morphed African Contingency Operations Training and Assistance program. ACRI changed to ACOTA under President George W. Bush, but what remained the same was its mission: It "trains military trainees and equips African national militaries to conduct peace support operations and humanitarian relief" using State Dept. funds. That mission sounds suspiciously similar to the reasons touted for creation of a global peacekeeping force. That a senior administration official attempts to downplay the significance of Americas participation in this new global force by saying ACOTA continues to be a centerpiece of this initiative, of the training and equip, and ACOTA is being folded into this initiative, should not deter Americans from seeing the true agenda at play here. The path still leads to Americas formal support of a new U.N. military force. The existence of physical peacekeeping training centers, in Italy to start, and the promises of administration officials that the number of trainees will ultimately be much more than 50,000 only solidifies that this global power grab is real, and it results in a heightened risk to Americas sovereignty -- its constitutional authority to select, control and command its own congressionally approved military operations. As insulting to the American intellect as this half-heartedly hidden agenda seems, whats worse is the simultaneous betrayal by our own duly elected congressional representatives, sworn by oath to uphold the nations of, by and for the people form of government. Lugar, the same man who brings before our nation a U.N. measure relinquishing U.S. sovereignty over 70 percent of the earths mass with the Law of the Sea Treaty, and who successfully pushed for passage of an agreement with the U.N.-familys International Atomic Energy Agency that could one day compromise our nuclear and national security systems now unabashedly gives us S. 2514, a bill he has no qualms introducing solely as a means of supporting the presidents

It was an old Victorian house out on 29thStreet. Sometimes Van would take a notion to hit the wall which separated our apartments with his fist and shout, "Who the fuck would join the Marine Corps?" And I'd yell back, "Airborne sucks!" "The Marine Corps sucks!" "Only two things come out of the sky," I'd yell back again, "Bird shit and fools!" That was how we said good morning to each other. It was our ritualized greeting.We were both active in a veterans antiwar group, and the two of us used to get together almost every day and talk about the war, politics and other things. He told me about his experiences in "Nam," the killing he'd seen and participated in. Although I'd spent four years in the USMC, that was before Vietnam. So while we both opposed the war and shared similar opinions on it, Van often reminded me that he was the one who'd been there and experienced it. "You weren't in Nam," he'd often say, "You're coming from a philosophical point of view. You don't know what it's like to see your buddies die in front of you." It seemed to be Van's one-upmanship, or at least that's the way I took it. People who've been through a certain experience sometimes insist that they have a special claim on knowledge and understanding of the subject.One night at around midnight he came to my place and pounded on the door. "I've got something to show you!" he shouted. When I opened the door I could see he was terribly upset, apparently in a violent mood. He demanded that I go with him to his apartment and see whatever it was that he wanted to show me. As soon as we went in, he took out a bottle of bright red pills and swallowed all of them in front of me. "I killed seven people in Nam," he said. He'd told me that before, but this time he added, "I can't live with it any more!" He also told me once again, as he had so many times before, "You don't know what it's like to see your buddies die."I told him to sit down and take it easy. Within minutes he had passed out. I went for help and got him to a hospital where he died a week later without ever regaining consciousness. I later learned that the red pills he'd overdosed on were Seconal, which is a type of sleeping pill. People also told me, "When somebody O.D.s on downers, you never want to let them sit down. You gotta keep them walking."Van had once believed in the war, and he was a guy who fought for what he believed in. He enlisted in the Army, volunteered for Vietnam, asked to be assigned to the airborne infantry -- and got it all. And when his year in Nam was up, he asked for another. In all he spent seventeen months in combat with the 101stAirborne. That was back in 1969 and 1970. After returning from Vietnam, however, Van began to have second thoughts about the war. He took part in peace marches, and on April17th, 1972, he and I were part of a group of sixteen ex-GIs who occupied an Air Force recruiting office in San Francisco to protest the war.Nevertheless, Van was not really political, or maybe I should say he wasn't much given to theories or philosophical speculation. Instead of looking at what U.S. corporations were doing around the world, and how he'd been exploited into defending them, he blamed himself for what he'd done, and tormented himself for having "enjoyed" it. Listen closely. Read between the lines. You are being convinced, slowly and deliberately that vitamin supplements are dangerous and that pharmaceutical drugs are always your best bet.
Perhaps you've become aware of this upside-down logic. If not, I offer you a few examples of how the masses are being systematically brain-washed. Keep these examples in mind , it won't be long before you're noticing some yourself.
Recently ABC News ran a rather lengthy piece about how "dangerous" certain common herbal supplements are. The case in point was a woman who'd had a kidney transplant. She took an herbal supplement containing the age-old Black Cohosh root and whammo! She became deathly ill. What ABC didn't discuss was that people who've had an organ transplant have compromised systems that even too much water or table salt plays havoc with. Never mind that. The not -so-subtle point the network was making was this: Be afraid, be very afraid of anything the pharmaceutical companies don't make a profit from!
This past week The Wall Street Journal screamed out headlines: "Watch Out For Serious Interactions When Taking Drugs, Herbs".
The story reported " a wave of recent studies is sparking concern about the dangers of taking herbal supplements
" The article went on to list the dangers of combining common herbal supplements with prescription drugs. Instead of pointing out that pharmaceuticals cause the deaths each year of over 100,000 people, media attention focuses on the "dangers" of herbs people have been taking to help heal their bodies for centuries.
What is perhaps most telling about why these types of stories are hitting print and broadcast with greater frequency is simply this: Vitamins and herbal supplements bring in well over $20 billion dollars a year. The drug companies want a piece of the action. Therefore, expect to see more and more attention focused on the "danger"' of vitamins. The next logical step will be the prescribing of these natural substances to better "protect" the consumer. Once this happens, as it has in several other countries, what were once easily-available non-prescription, age-old healing substances like Ginko Biloba or St. John's Wort or even Vitamin C will then become available only if a doctor prescribes them. Since the vast majority of medical doctors in the United States hold little store by the less-invasive natural remedies this does not bode well for those of us who subscribe to the belief that the body can and will heal itself if given the right nutritional support.
The Wall Street Journal story said "the growing interest in herb-drug interactions comes as more Americans are popping herbal medications." "Popping."
That's an interesting choice of words. In an era where we are encouraged to take a pill ("pop" one, if you will) for everything from heartburn ("esophageal reflux disease") to shyness ("social anxiety disorder") to normal childhood energy levels ("attention deficit hyperactivity disorder") it seems odd that taking SUPPLEMENTS should be referred to as "popping." Why is it that term is never used to describe the taking of prescription drugs?
Bayer (the pharmaceutical company now in the midst of trying to settle unprecedented numbers of wildly expensive lawsuits over deaths related to its cholesterol-lowering drug Baycol) now labels its (potentially toxic) antibiotic Cipro with cautions against pairing the drug with calcium-fortified orange juice! It would seem the public would be better served all around with honest assessments of the dangers inherent in these drugs themselves- with or without the juice chaser!

Spooked by the closure Tuesday of mid-sized Guta and reports that top-tier Alfa was on the ropes, depositors descended on banks in droves Wednesday, intensifying a trend that has seen an estimated $5 billion, or about 10 percent of all household savings, taken out of the system in the last two months. "It's like 1998 all over again," Nikolai, a travel agency manager in his mid-40s, said as he squeezed into a packed Alfa Express branch near Sokol metro station. "I don't have much money here, but I am going to cash out just to be safe." After three bank closures in as many months -- each bigger than the last -- intervention and reassurance by the Central Bank was not enough to calm growing concerns that a full-fledged crisis was in the making. Hit hardest of all was Alfa, the nation's largest private bank. "We have never had so many people here," said a security guard at Alfa's Sokol branch. "There were lines already when we opened the bank in the morning." A letter signed by Alfa Bank CEO Rushan Khvesyuk and posted on the front door of Alfa branches throughout the city accused the media of spreading "erroneous information" about Alfa's operations and told depositors that the bank would meet all its obligations to clients. That letter was followed by one from Mikhail Fridman, the main owner of Alfa Group, Alfa Bank's parent company. It said Alfa's owners were ready to provide their assets outside of the banking industry to back the bank's efforts to meet demands from clients. The letter, published on the company's web site, was co-signed by Alfa Group's president Pyotr Aven and its CEO Petr Smida. "The nervousness on the market will be overcome in the nearest future," the three said in the statement. "We're sure it won't damage Alfa Bank's clients or the bank itself." An NTV report Tuesday evening on Guta's troubles was just the latest in a series of unsourced media reports suggesting Alfa will be the next to fall. The bank held $1.1 billion in personal deposits at the end of March, the last month for which data was available, but a senior bank official said early Wednesday that it had lost at least $100 million in deposits since Saturday. "This is 10 times the normal amount," vice president Alexander Gafin told a conference on integrating Russia into the world economy. By midday Wednesday, the waiting list to close an account at Alfa's Arbat branch was already up to 75. In a speech to the State Duma, Central Bank Chairman Sergei Ignatyev tried to ease the fears of Alfa customers, saying the bank "did not have any problems [with liquidity]." "The bank has enough resources to satisfy depositors' demands," he said. As far as Guta is concerned, Ignatyev told the Duma that the Central Bank was ready to essentially fund the nationalization of Guta by backing a buyout bid by state-owned Vneshtorgbank, the country's second largest financial institution by assets. US Vice President Dick Cheney's use of the F-word to a senior Democratic Senator and political opponent during a ceremony in the United States Senate on June 22 demonstrated that the Bush administration no longer feels a need to cover up its thuggish behaviour with even the pretense of decorum that gives democratic government its authority. Rather than apologize, Cheney said he "felt better after I had done it." Was this an example of the kind of democratic discourse that the United States wants to teach the rest of the world?A few days later, Cheney's boss, President Bush, gave an interview to Irish television on the eve of his visit to Ireland for the US-European Union summit. What was notable was his impatience whenever interviewer Carole Coleman asked him any question that challenged his simplistic conception of the world and his role in it. Several times he admonished her not to interrupt him, displaying testiness that would be ruled out of order in a high school debate. Coleman put it to Bush that a majority of the Irish people did not welcome his visit because "they are angry about Iraq, they are angry about Abu Ghraib." Bush explained that "they must not understand." When Coleman asked Bush why he thought so many people around the world do not understand what he is about, he answered simply, "I don't know." Bush justified the Iraq war by claiming again that he invaded the country because Saddam refused to disarm Iraq's "weapons of mass destruction," without explaining how anyone can disarm themselves of weapons that do not exist. Underlining his imperviousness to reality, Bush stated that, "most of Europe supported the decision in Iraq," and he claimed that only France opposed it. On the Abu Ghraib prison torture, Bush reasserted the theory that the torture was the work of an isolated few, even though every day brings new evidence of abuse known and authorized at high levels, including from his White House. Several major international human rights organizations have concluded that Bush's "war on terror" has been accompanied by systematic and growing human rights abuses. But these organizations too must not understand according to Bush's logic.Bush's visit to Ireland, followed by a trip to Istanbul for the NATO summit, came on the heels of another diplomatic failure. The United States was soundly defeated in its effort to push through the UN Security Council an extension of the special immunity from war crimes trials enjoyed by its soldiers involved in UN peace-keeping missions. Any administration in touch with reality would have recognized at the outset that in the wake of Abu Ghraib such immunity, extraordinary and unjustified to begin with, had simply become untenable. -Caveat Lector- Forwarded: Today on KPFA radio (Pacifica's Berkeley outlet), during the morning show, an interview with ex senator (and presidential candidate) Gary Hart, who is now advising Kerry on foreign policy. He blasted Bush with the increasingly common theme that Bush's policies are hurting the war on terrorism. Hart co-wrote with ex senator Rudman of New Hampshire a report on the war for the Council on Foreign Relations a couple of years ago, which concluded the US was losing because it wasn't fighting it well enough. Then in the Evening News, a report on Richard Clarke speaking to an ACLU meeting, attacking Bush in the same language, saying the war on terrorism is a must-win and Bush is losing it. And another segment in the news promoted John Edwards, the populist hero. Not reported was Edwards' moves to push for a domestic spy agency like Britain's M.I.5.
