LAKE WASHINGTON, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Despite urgings from Secretary of State Colin Powell to restrain his response to Thursday's deadly Palestinian suicide bombing in central Jerusalem, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon ordered F-16s to strike a Palestinian police station outside Ramallah and his army to seize offices of the Palestinian Authority and Palestine Liberation Organization. Powell spoke with Sharon by telephone Thursday afternoon after answering questions from reporters outside the State Department. It was largely a call to express condolences, a senior State Department official told United Press International Thursday evening. The phone call followed a suicide bomb attack by a Palestinian militant that killed 15 people -- including the bomber -- and injured more than 130 others at a busy fast-food restaurant. This official said Sharon told him where he stood on the situation as he saw it. He said Sharon, talked about the pressure he was under to do something, but added, he didn't ask for a green light, referring to Thursday evening's Israeli counter attacks. The phone call wrapped up a day of intense diplomacy for Powell, who in between meetings with top Mexican officials, spoke with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan, Foreign Minister Louis Michel of Belgium -- the current head of the European Union -- and EU foreign minister Javier Solana. This official said Powell echoed his message to reporters regarding the need to break the cycle of violence that has engulfed Israel and the Palestinian territories for nearly eleven months. Earlier Thursday Powell told reporters, they both have to do everything they can to reduce the violence, reduce the provocations and the counter-response to provocations. But it appears Powell's consistent calls for calm has fallen on deaf ears. Despite early reports from the region that Thursday's F-16 strikes resulted in no casualties, the State Department has publicly and privately urged the Israelis not to use the fighter jets designed for air-to-air combat against civilian targets. On Wednesday, State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said in response to questions about Israel's use of U.S. hardware for counter strikes that the United States was not investigating potential violations of the Arms Export Control Act, which governs the circumstances under which U.S. weapons exports can be used. In the Hebrew, letters also stand as numbers. Their values go from 1 to 10, then by tens up to 100, then by hundreds. Hundreds of Palestinian mourners travelled to the village of Idna, a previously quiet spot on the West Bank, yesterday to bury three members of the Tmaizeh family shot when a suspected Jewish terror cell fired on their mini van. There was no suggestion that the van was shot at for any reason other than to kill as many Palestinians as possible in one ambush. The Tmaizeh clan had good relations with the neighbouring Jewish settlement and Idna was almost untouched by 10 months of intifada. There is no militant graffiti, no portraits of gun-carrying martyrs. That has changed. Yesterday the village was plastered with pictures of Diya Tmaizeh, two months, spattered with blood and still wearing his disposable nappy, the only child of a mother who had waited 10 years for a family. The caption read: A new page in the crimes of Ariel Sharon [the Israeli Prime Minister] against the children of Palestine. Two relatives were killed: Mohammed Saleh Tmaizeh, 22, and Mohammed Hilmi Tmaizeh, 21, who was married last month. His wife, May, lost a leg, one of four girls and young women severely injured. The Israeli government denounced the killing and promised to find the vigilante gang. The Foreign Minister, Shimon Peres, said the crime was abominable. The Settlers' Council, representing the 200,000 Jewish settlers in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, said: If it turns out that this loathsome act was committed by an Israeli, we condemn him with all severity. But hardline settlers warned of vengeance. Palestinian gunmen have killed more than 30 settlers and they feel that they are sitting ducks, deprived of the protection which the army ought to provide. At the funeral service, young Palestinian militants called for the road used by the settlers to be set on fire with stones, bullets and bombs. The imam of the mosque in Idna echoed calls for revenge and martyrdom. The killers of prophets will have no presence in our land, he said, meaning the Israelis. Those who wish for a place in Paradise should look to Jerusalem. Violence by settlers is nothing new, but until last month it was restricted mostly to hot-headed acts of vandalism, such as burning cars, houses and crops. The triple murder on Thursday night was clearly a random act of terrorism. Abdel-Hadi Tmaizeh, 56, whose house looks on to the main road, said the mini van arrived at the junction at 9.30pm carrying seven members of the family home from a wedding feast. A white car was parked in the centre of the main road, making as if to turn towards the village. The driver signalled to the van to go ahead and it turned in front of the car. Then two men each emptied a full magazine into the back of the van and sped to safety through an Israeli army checkpoint less than a mile away. Abdel-Hadi Tmaizeh said: An Israeli army jeep arrived on the scene at the same time as we did. But the officer was in no hurry to radio to the checkpoint to stop the criminals. Concern over settler vigilante groups has been rising. The security services have announced that one Jewish terrorist cell is operating near the Palestinian town of Halhoul, a short distance to the east of Idna. Abbas Zaki, the senior Palestinian representative at the funeral, said: If the Israelis are going to destroy us, they will destroy themselves too. Both sides will lose and only the fanatics will win. He added darkly: We have more fanatics than they do. At the Jewish settlement of Adoura, where 20 families live in red-roofed houses across the valley from the 18,000 Palestinians in Idna, there was consternation. Aryeh Shanki, who works for a construction firm said: I know the Tmaizehs and they are all good people. There has not been any violence at all around here. Someone from outside just ruined our life and sped off. I want our life to stay the same, but I fear it will only get worse. The problem for the Israeli army is that the conflict now seems to be between uncontrolled fanatics on both sides, casting it in the mould of Lebanon or Bosnia, with the Israelis losing moral authority.
