Yeah, but it still boggles my mind. I can remember when every fourth and fifth grader's dream was to own hightops. These were a heavy leather boot that reached almost to the knee. A factor of each pair was a large jackknife that had its own leather pouch sewn right into the boot. Our boy scouts (those who came in uniform due to some special occasion always had their boy scout knife on them. Boys did occasionally play a game called mumbly peg on the school grounds before school started. Otherwise the knives were much admired, and almost never seen open, because no one wanted anyone else's dirty fingers on his precious knife. To my knowledge no child in this area was ever injured by one of these knives in all the years I attended school. Apparently we have become a nation of idiots who cannot carry any weapons anywhere for fear of sudden transmutation into mass killers. Even our french fries have become lethal. No one has mentioned it yet, but our restaurants should start serving meat cut into bite sized pieces so customers to not have to handle knives, and the chef who cuts the meat for them should be under armed guard at all times. Neither hilt nor pommel were visible before he pulled it out of his sock (and the item did not have any gemstone, unless it was too tiny to be made out on camera)... If the getup Mr. Hix was wearing on the television show was the EXACT getup he wore to the school dance, then the knife was definitely NOT visible to the casual observer... someone therefore saw the hilt and deduced knife - not 'the guy brandished it' The zero-tolerance policy doesn't care if someone brandishes a weapon...just bringing it onto school property is an infraction. he was stupid but not intimidating as you are attempting to lead us to beleive I never claimed he was intimidating. I can understand having a zero-tolerance policy in schools for carrying weapons, as long as it applies to REAL weapons and not something like a nail clipper. So you are saying that students should be allowed to bring any manner of weapon onto school property? Or are you suggesting that just Caucasians be allowed this priviledge? This is not a new policy...back when I was in school in the 60s, any student would have been busted for bringing a knife to school or into a school dance...there were gangs even back then, and carrying a knife was a siren call to have a 'rumble'... His guilt is that one day he turned up in a school discotheque wearing wearing a traditional Scottish attire, indispensable detail of which was a knife, or sgian-dhu. The school board in Holt, in Michigan is now due to decide if Mr. Hix will be expelled for violating the state's zero tolerance law against bringing weapons to school. Mr. Hix (who also plays the bagpipes) said he did not think about the knife as a weapon when he attended the school dance in May. The knife was more than 3in long, according to BBC. Mr. Hix said: It's part of the formal wear for a Scottish man. It's literally an item, like a piece of clothing. It doesn't stand out when you look at it. It's sort of natural. He said he had the sgian-dhu tucked into his sock for nearly two hours before a chaperone at the prom noticed it. Mr. Hix was forced to leave the prom and could not attend classes for the rest of the school year. Under Michigan's law, which went into effect six years ago, students must be expelled for 180 days if they bring a weapon to school. Weapons include knives with a blade of 3in or more. It is strange that such a multinational and tolerant, as it seems, country as the USA does not permit its citizens to wear their national regalia. -Caveat Lector- THE PROBLEM OF NATIONALITIES IN USA: STUDENT FACES EXPULSION FROM COLLEGE FOR WEARING SCOTTISH ATTIRE American student Jeremy His is facing expulsion from college. This kid was on the CBS morning show yesterday (along with his attorney); he is not in college, he's a junior in highschool, and he wore the outfit to a school dance. He has a 3.75 average and was planning on attending Harvard when he graduated . If he is expelled from school, he'll attend a private school (according to what he said on this show), but the expulsion will probably adversely affect his chances of getting into Harvard. His guilt is that one day he turned up in a school discotheque wearing wearing a traditional Scottish attire, indispensable detail of which was a knife, or sgian-dhu. They showed this item on the show, and 'traditional' or not, it looks like it can do quite a bit of damage if used as a weapon. Mr. Hix knew the rules -- he admitted to it on the show. There was no reason to wear this knife, which he showed was worn in a sheath inside his sock, in other words it was a concealed weapon. He could have foregone wearing this item and no one would have known, since it was worn CONCEALED. Either this kid was unbelievable stupid, or he deliberately wanted to provoke something...he knew about the zero-tolerance policy and deliberately chose to break it, when complying would not have adversely affected his costume in the least, since the knife could not normally be seen. Which brings up the 2nd point...choosing to deliberately flaunt the zero-tolerance policy, Mr. Hix then did not leave well enough alone, and must have taken the knife out for some reason at the dance, because it could not otherwise be seen. This kid was wearing his full regalia on this show, and was sitting facing the camera, full body in view, with his legs crossedand until he pulled the knife out from his kneesock, you couldn't see it there. So the fact that someone found out that he had this knife at the school dance shows that Mr. Hix had to have removed it from his kneesock at some point during the dance... He said he had the sgian-dhu tucked into his sock for nearly two hours before a chaperone at the prom noticed it. You couldn't see it yesterday when Mr. Hix was sitting facing the camera, with his leg crossed over the leg with the knife tucked in the sock...not even a bulge in the sock. So one has to wonder just what Mr. Hix did to garner attention from the chaperone... It is strange that such a multinational and tolerant, as it seems, country as the USA does not permit its citizens to wear their national regalia. Not when the 'national regalia' includes a dangerous weapon. I'm far from being a liberal, but I think weapons that are clearly weapons have no place at a school function...
