Prefab Program Selections (was: RE: Regrouping on installation profile idea)
From: Tacvek [snip] I may be just a user, and even one who had *very* little trouble learning to use setup, but I would say either INSTALLATION-TYPE or TASKS I'm a Debian user, and must note that Debian uses the word task for a similar concept. Reason #63187638 why Linux will never ever ever ever ever win the desktop. I'm sorry, but Tasks could not be a less meaningful way of describing this concept. Installation Type is better, but the issue you run into there is, I want to change my Installation Type, but I still want to play CygTetris, what do I do!?!?! Should you be careful with the naming of the meta-packages TASKS may be the clearest. Examples: * C/C++ Development * Gaming :-) * Java Development * Latex Development * Perl Development * SSH Server * Web Server * X Windows See how the term Tasks loses all meaning after Perl Development? Has anyone been collecting the list of names that have been proposed? Using '.', '-' and all caps: Main Candidates: INSTALLATION INSTALLATION-PROFILES INSTALLATION-TYPE PROFILES TASKS These ones don't seem great: DEFAULT-PROFILES USER-PROFILES FUNCTIONAL-[GROUPS|PROFILES] USEFUL-[GROUPS|PROFILES] PRESELECTED-[GROUPS|PROFILES|PACKAGES] The concept that's trying to be communicated here is A selection of programs that are likely to be of interest to the person who's eye was caught by the sdesc. I think it's pretty critical that a selection of programs be conveyed clearly, and especially avoid the connotation that they're somehow exclusive to others. Ergo, INSTALLATION-anything seems to me to be out (see How do I change my installation {type, profile, whatever}? in the FAQ). Tasks just isn't at all intuitive. Profiles makes some sense, but mostly in the What's a 'Profile'? sense in that it doesn't really collide with any particular concept. How about: Prefab Program Selections ? It still has that Unix ugly to it, but it actually says what it means and means what it says, so everybody wins. -- Gary R. Van Sickle

And, right now, I think that Igor was telling me that you can't do something like: Prefab Program Selections C Development X Desktop ... Because setup.exe can't handle that. So, it would have to be: C Development Prefab Program Selection X Desktop Prefab Program Selection ... which is a little wordy. I do think we want to convey that these are optional easy-to-use selections which will pull in all of the programs required for a standard use case (as they like to say where I work). How about standard selection? C Development Standard Selection X Desktop Standard Selection ... Bleah. I don't know. Maybe it just can't be properly conveyed without all sorts of flashy gui balloons and help. cgf

I'm really wondering what you're up to. Michel's choice of words might be a bit unlucky, but it's a fact that his application will become GPL (or another compatible OSS license of choice), if he links it to the Cygwin/X client libs. This is obviously not a result of the X libs being GPLed, but a result of the fact that the Cygwin/X libs in turn require to link against the cygwin1.dll, or in other words, linking against Cygwin/X client libs will make the application a Cygwin application. So the question is still valid and was from the beginning, minus choice of words. However, this question is obviously off-topic for this list since this is the Cygwin/X list, not a native Win32 X list. So please move your question to another, more appropriate forum, Michel. The thread has largely moved to the question of whether the cygwin port of X client libs is GPL-viral or not, which would be more on-topic if there was not a specific cygwin list for licensing issues. It has also become about whether I'm clueless, and I dont like to leave such a topic unattended but experience on the net has told me that a disdainful silence is often best :-). So, I'll follow your advice and move on! Maybe you could start here: http://freedesktop.org/wiki/Xming Thanks for the tip. RE: nfs problems
Hi Sam, many thanks for following up on this problem. Does your local windows machine has more than 2 (two) hard drives? In my machine, c: and d: are two different drives. Unfortunately, no. So I'm unable to try and reproduce the exact problem that you're seeing. I have tried by creating /exports/c and /exports/d as explained in the README file. First I just created /exports/d; mounted and exported it within cygwin as described. In this situation, mounting it from linux does work just fine, great!. I can live with just this. Wheh! OK, that's good to hear. But, if now I follow the same procedure for c then something weird goes one. Now in cygwin I have c: and d: mounted over /exports/c and /exports/d, respectively, and my /etc/exports looks like this /exports/c (ro, no_root_squash) /exports/d (ro, no_root_squash) if in linux now I mount /exports/d then what I see by ls-ing its content is not 'd' but 'c'! Am I clear? Unfortunately, yes :-( It certainly sounds like something in the nfs-server is doing the wrong thing when resolving mounts in this situation. After this strange situation I have exported a third entry, '/usr'. And yes, it mounts just fine in the remote linux box. As far as I can tell, I can export 'd' and properly mount it in the remote machine only when it is the only one. I'm sorry that you're seeing this problem, Rodrigo - and I don't think that I will have the ability to dig into this problem anytime soon. If you have any interest in working on resolving it, I'd be happy to hear whatever else you can discover about the problem. -Samrobb -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://cygwin.com/docs.html FAQ: http://cygwin.com/faq/

Bash crashes with cygwin1-20051114 in W98.
Hi, I have just installed the cygwin1-20051114 snapshot in a W98 box. The cygwin.bat crashes. The alert window says that inside BASH there is an illegal instruction. After that the machine was blocked and I had to restart using the hardware reset. The apparently the rxvt.bat works OK. The previous snapshot was the cygwin1-20051108, and it was fine. best regards, R.M. Re: Xemacs broken after postgresql upgrade
Dr. Volker Zell schrieb: Xemacs will be broken after upgrading postgresql to the new stable or test version. This is because Xemacs depends on pq.dll which somehow got renamed to cygpq.dll in newer versions of postgresql. I will rebuild Xemacs ASAP but can only upload in a week or so. In the meantime rename pq.dll to something else before upgrading postgresql and rename again to pq.dll afterwards. I'd rather say, copy the new /bin/cygpq.dll after the postgresql upgrade to /bin/pg.dll is enough. Many external commands failed frequently, make rarely worked reliably, even ls -rtl occasionally stopped. I tried the change the heap chunk size following the recommended microsoft fix and had this had no change. I was seeing this (I've copied it in to make this solution easier to search for) : C:\cygwin\bin\make.exe (24556): *** couldn't allocate cygwin heap, Win32 error 487, base 0x48, top 0x48E000, reserve_size 57344, allocsize 57344, page_const 4096 84 [main] make 9072 fork_parent: child 24556 died waiting for longjmp before initialization make: vfork: No such file or directory I was reading about setup this morning (looking for a way to store the proxy name and password - which, btw, I still haven't found a solution to) when I reached this page: http://www.cygwin.com/cygwin-ug-net/setup-maxmem.html I tried it and, while 1024 didn't work for me, 2048 did! I did this: regtool -i set /HKLM/Software/Cygnus\ Solutions/Cygwin/heap_chunk_in_mb 2048 And not a single failure since. If I change it back to 1024 or delete it, I get the problem back. Output of cygcheck -srv is enclosed. /var/log/cron.log has no messages. There may be messages in the Windows Event Log that could provide a clue as to what went wrong. HTH, Igor Apparently, not all mirrors (mirrors.kernel.org) have this update. I used another to get the new cygrunsrv. That solved the problem. WARNING!!!! cygwin1-2005114 completely corrupted a XP laptop
Hi, I have just installed the last cygwin1-20051114.dll on a laptop running W-XP. Then the following catastrophe happened: 1- I opened a BASH-RXVT window and seemed OK. 2- I opened a BASH-CMD window and looked OK. 3- I opened a cygwin program of mine that uses a CMD window, instead of appearing the expected window, hundreds of copies of the 2 previously opened windows appeared. There was no way of stopping the process. At the end a screen appeared that alerted that WINDOWS was stopped because critical system data was corrupted. After that there was no way of booting again the machine, even with the recovery disc. It seems that I will have to reformat the HDD. I urge you to immediately remove the cygwin1-2005114 snapshot. bye, R.M. Note: In a W-98 box cygwin1-20051114.dll looked OK. -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://cygwin.com/docs.html FAQ: http://cygwin.com/faq/

I have been using this snapshot heavily all day without any problems. As I usually point out -- there is nothing magic about cygwin. There is no way that it should be able to do something like reformat your hard drive unless you were running from a privileged account. Even then, you'd have to try pretty hard to make it do something bad to your hard drive. I can't imagine how it could do something like what you describe. Unless someone else corroborates these problems, I don't think it makes any sense to remove the snapshot. cgf (now wondering if there will be a bunch of Yes! An interesting tidbit
Cygwin has certainly grown in leaps and bounds thanks to the hard work of the developers, and all the numerous contributors and porters. Everybody on this project contributes something. I would like to take this time to thank Christopher for all he's done. Cygwin still has the basic functions from Cygnus B21 and below. Cygwin is not linux. But it comes close. The POSIX layer helps. I'm on an NT based system, and Cygwin works for me. I m only a hobbyist, however. I just downloaded it from rcn.net, however, and it seemed to be corrupted, which means that it must be a problem with the mirror, oddly enough. After a lot of time I decided to upgrade my very old version of Cygwin to latest release. Unfortunately there is something wrong when I try to execute sshd sever by for example net start sshd. Any trial ends with message: Entry point of procedure _impure_ptr not found in library cygwin1.dll. I utilize Windows 2000 with SP4. What is solution of my proble ? Possibly just a reboot, but more likely a rerun of setup.exe with all services stopped. Although you did not follow these reporting directions: Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html it looks like your cygwin1.dll was not upgraded because it was in use at the time. Therefore, when the new sshd tries to use features of the new cygwin, but the old cygwin is still in use, you get the mentioned crash. Thanks for response but: 1) Rebooting did not resolve the problem 2) Cygwin1.dll is from July 2005 so I guess it is new. As a matter of fact I removed all cygwin files from Cygwin directory and installed latest version of Cygwin to other partition on my disk. Situation did not changed. Nevertheless, your problem is an indication of the existence of another, older cygwin1.dll on your system, either in a directory in your PATH or in a windows system directory. There is no other explanation. cgf -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://cygwin.com/docs.html FAQ: http://cygwin.com/faq/ Thanks . It turned out that I had cygwin1.dll in AVR gcc compiler and it caused errors. It is a little bit strange because LoadLibrary function ( I assume Cygwin executable call that function to load Cygwin1.dll ) should first take dll from pointed path or directory where executable started. Searching in path environment should be carried in the end. Thanks again.
