32-bit setup-x86.exe missing on cygwin.com
Hello, I am an enthusiastic user of Cygwin since a few years but now I cannot download a functioning 32-bit setup-x86.exe from cygwin.com. Indeed, the webpage "https://www.cygwin.com/install.html"; reads: "About 32 bit Cygwin The limited address space of 32 bit Windows means that random failures in the fork(2) system call are more likely. Therefore, we recommend using 32 bit Cygwin only in limited scenarios, with only a minimum of necessary packages installed, and only if there's no way to run 64 bit Cygwin instead. The signature can be used to verify the validity of this binary." However, when downloaded on a 32-bit computer from the abovementioned link, setup-x86.exe yields the following error message: "Cygwin is not supported on 32-bit Windows." (I need this support to run legacy apps and do some low-level back-end development). Moreover, since a few months/weeks, downloading with my version setup-x86.exe (2.905) is impossible: after selecting a random download website, the following error message appears: "The current .ini file requires at least version 2.924 of setup. Please download a newer version from https://www.cygwin.com/setup-x86.exe"; Where can I find a 32-bit version of 2.924 setup-x86 ? If 32-bit support is really not possible, would that be at least possible either to: 1) Offer a truly functioning 32-bit version of setup-x86.exe, distinct from setup-x86_64.exe, or 2) Open a legacy 32-bit download site where all the 32-bit compliant packages would be stored. This means you have two different Cygwin versions installed. If you never use the other one, I strongly suggest removing it, as an unused and unmaintained program is often a good target for various troublemakers. Please read the linked FAQ entry for that explanation. Ancient legacy repos such as SourceForge and GoogleCode are fertile sources of such projects as are products from (some not so) defunct embedded systems tool developers. This removes the need for an autoresponder and is more helpful at the same time. Users might be reluctant to join the mailing list just to report this and therefore they may waste their time needlessly trying to track down the problem. That was why the autoresponder was added - reply directly to those folks and point them to a greatly expanded FAQ entry with relevant links explaining the problem and solution, and suggesting other actions. I don't remember anyone clicking the email link at the end to let us know what a product or project was or where it came from, so someone on the list could follow up. The message is baked into ancient versions of Cygwin. I believe the page the auto-responder points them to indicates the fact that their version is old and should be updated. This often happens because someone bundled Cygwin with something else and is not updating the Cygwin version. Modern versions no longer generate the message. In sum, the auto-responder is the best thing we can do about it. At least we don't have to have a human respond. But, now the time has arrived that your project is obsolete, because Microsoft has introduced ubuntu for windows system on windows 10, which covers everything I need. So, I have removed cygwin software from all my computers. The installation of UBUNTU on windows 10 is very simple: a) On the search box of windows 10, search for "Turn Windows Features On or Off", b) In that list, check the box for "Windows Subsystem for Linux", c) Install the latest UBUNTU from Microsoft store for free, d) run terminal of Ubuntu from windows as an app: first time it will asks to set a username and password. e) Follow with sudo ubuntu apt upgrade ; sudo ubuntu apt update. The rest is whatever the user wants to do, by installing additional packages, emacs etc. To simplify the use of x-win interface one can install VcXsrc for using XLaunch app for free. Once more thank you for all your efforts in years. It has been a great help to use your software in years. Fix to help novice users verify cygwin.com downloads
Hey I was searching for some articles about verifying files today and I came across this page: Cygwin FAQ (http://www.cygwin.com/faq.html) on your site. I noticed you recommend very thorough verification, using hashes and sigs. But usually the data file is downloaded much more than the hash or sig files. Users often don't verify. Just wanted to give you a heads up that we created a free open source program that both downloads and verifies in one step. So your users always verify. It's like "Cygwin FAQ", but it's a single command that downloads and verifies thoroughly: https://denova.com/open/safeget/developer/ Might be worth a mention on your page. Either way, keep up the awesome work! Cheers, Bob P.S. The best way to make sure downloaders verify files is to give them one command that downloads and verifies in one step. There's a free open source solution. -- Problem reports: https://cygwin.com/problems.html FAQ: https://cygwin.com/faq/ Documentation:https://cygwin.com/docs.html Unsubscribe info: https://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple

Since this looks to be some kind of DNS resolving issue for various people, you can try to work around it by changing your DNS server settings to use something like 8.8.8.8 and/or 1.1.1.1, which resolve the names correctly. Or, for someone just trying to get an install done, a simple tweak of your /etc/hosts file to define the domains as having IP 8.43.85.97 will work as a short-term fix. ..wayne.. -- Problem reports: https://cygwin.com/problems.html FAQ: https://cygwin.com/faq/ Documentation: https://cygwin.com/docs.html Unsubscribe info: https://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple

Did that wind up being true? Rebasing is still done on both 32bit and 64bit, but it's automatic now. As long as you package your inhouse stuff so that setup installs it along with the rest of Cygwin, you don't need more than a wrapper around the call to setup. Greetings, Nicholas Clark! > I remember seeing a bunch of traffic on the subject of rebasing a few > years ago, with people saying that it wouldn't be necessary once we > moved over to 64-bit Cygwin. Did that wind up being true? I see no reason to think otherwise. 64*bit address space is much leaner on the subject. However, the very process of rebasing the applications has nothing to do with platform specs. Apps are built on different machines, and their address space may collide, when they meet on one target system. 64-bit platform just offer more space, meaning that more applications can be installed that rely on POSIX address space semantics. Still, you should only install what you are actually using. > I've got some in-house tools that some of our developers want to use > on Cygwin, and I've been thinking about the best way to maintain > remote installations. Hi all, I remember seeing a bunch of traffic on the subject of rebasing a few years ago, with people saying that it wouldn't be necessary once we moved over to 64-bit Cygwin. Did that wind up being true? I've got some in-house tools that some of our developers want to use on Cygwin, and I've been thinking about the best way to maintain remote installations.
