You see, the server sets the autorepeat to useful values. I'm quite sure
there is another program in the startup scripts which sets the autorepeat
settings to the strange value.

Maybe this is not xset but the the windowmanager (kde, gnome) itself. Please
check the settings of the windowmanager if there is a strange autorepeat
setting.

XWin tries to set the repeat rate to something similar to the windows
repeat rate. This is noted in the configfile.

Maybe the session scripts of the linux host set the repeat rate to a bogus
value.

You can verify this by starting xwin without the query paramter and run
"DISPLAY=:0.0 xset -q" from windows. This should print the default setting.

Keyboard auto-repeat defaults when using 'xwin -query '

2003-12-26 Thread Chris Green
I have a odd problem with the keyboard auto-repeat setup.

I have two verions of cygwin/xfree installed on two different win2k
computers and the problem is the same on both. One has the latest
cygwin/xfree (just downloaded) and the other has a version from a
few months ago.

I have searched through the mailing list archive and see that a
similar problem has been reported before but it isn't exactly the same
and I don't see how to fix the problem anyway.

I am connecting from both these win2k systems uisng 'xwin -query
' to a linux Slackware 9.1 system on my local (home) network.
I have also got another X server available to me, X-Win32 but I'd
prefer to use cygwin as it's free and otherwise I keep having to pay
for upgrades to X-Win32.

The problem is that when I connect using cygwin/xfree the auto-repeat
is set to silly values, if I do an 'xset -q' I get:-

auto repeat: onkey click persent: 0LED mask: 00
auto repeat delay: 100repeat rate: 10

That auto repeat delay is much too short.

On the other hand when I connect using X-Win32 I get:-

auto repeat: onkey click persent: 0LED mask: 00

with no 'auto repeat delay' value at all, i.e. X-Win32 doesn't seem to
have attempted to set the auto repeat delay or repeat rate at all and
thus I'm left with the existing keyboard settings which are fine.

It would appear that cygwin/xfree *is* setting the auto repeat delay
and speed whereas X-Win32 isn't. If it is setting these where are the
default values? If it isn't then what is going on?

I know I can fix it by using 'xset' but this seems a bit of a bodge,
I'd rather do it properly.

Hi everyone,

I'd like to update/correct David's explanation in the FAQ:

> [David Dawson] For whatever reason, certain versions of Solaris
> need fonts that are not provided by Cygwin/XFree86; the result
> is that you may see the Solaris background tile and the hourglass
> cursor, but the XDM login prompt will never appear.

The problem is not with the fonts it is that Cygwin/Xfree currently
dumps core when both local fonts and a font server are used.

I stumbled over a similar bug that Pavel had. I was trying to setup
cygwin/Xfree to connect to my solaris 8 server. I was able to narrow
the bug down to a problem that Xfree has with using both local fonts
& a font server. Xfree works fine using either local fonts or a font
server, but blows chunks when using both.

If only local fonts are used, Xfree will core dump when "xset fp+" is
used to add or reset a font server to the fontpath. Adding local font
directories to the fontpath works OK.

If the fontpath contains only font servers adding other font servers
works but adding any local fonts will cause a core dump.

The specific problem with Solaris is that the dtlogin script Xsetup
runs "xset fp+ tcp/sunserver:7100" for all remote clients by default
in /usr/dt/config/Xsetup.

I assume a that a similar problem is present in Linux but do not have
a box handy to check.

Running "XWin -fp tcp/sunserver:7100" avoids the problem because this
explicitly sets the fontpath so that no local fonts are used but
Xsetup adds the font server a second time anyway.

My workaround was to comment out the xset fp+ line & use only the local
fonts, but the best thing to do would be to track down the reason Xfree
is dumping core & fix it. Until this is done, it might be a good idea to
update the FAQ.

Cheers,
Pat

Greg,

I think you need to either attempt to connect from another Windows
machine to the same linux box with XDMCP, or you need to attempt to
connect to another remote linux machine using XDMCP from the same
Windows box. You need to prove to yourself that the problem is on one
end or the other.

I have used ethereal on the linux box to monitor the tcp/ip traffic.

The remote connection is allowed, but when the linux box tries to
connect back to the cygwin/xfree86 box, its messages seem to be ignored.
I am not running any kind of firewall on the cygwin/xfree86 box and they

It seems almost like I need to issue a 'xhosts +node' on the cygwin box,
but I have not done that in the past and the cygwin box is not rejecting
the linux box, it is just ignoring it from what I see.
Has there been a security change that now requires xhosts +node to be
run somehow with the XWin --query command?

It seems almost like I need to issue a 'xhosts +node' on the cygwin box,
but I have not done that in the past and the cygwin box is not rejecting
the linux box, it is just ignoring it from what I see.

Has there been a security change that now requires xhosts +node to be
run somehow with the XWin --query command?

I have not installed any new hardware, and both server and client
machines have only one NIC. (Both are standard wired NICs.)

I did update the Linux box with the latest patches recently, that may be
causing the problem, but somehow I think it is the cygwin/xfree86 end.

Did you also just get a wireless networking card or another network
card? The reason I am asking is that you may now need to use the -from
parameter to indicate the return address that should be sent to the
remote machine. Please indicate if you have only one network card.

Well I've worked that one out from another post in the archive:

: These files should reside in /etc/X11/xkb and there should be a symlink to
: this directory at /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb. If you don't have these files

The symbolic link /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb was broken. I've fixed it
and the error message
Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap
has gone away.

Without a config file, the log file now reads:
(==) Using preset keyboard for "English (United Kingdom)" (0809), type "4"
 (EE) No primary keyboard configured
(==) Using compiletime defaults for keyboard

BUT the characters at the login prompt are still US :-(

non us keyboards with cygwin, xfree86, Xwin -query XDMCP

2003-09-02 Thread pbs
Setup an out of the box cygwin installation with Xfree86
 bash-prompt$ uname -a

With or without:
/etc/x11/XF86Config-4 installed with
   Option "XkbLayout" "gb"
gives the error:
Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap
What do I have to do to get Xwin.exe to read the gb XKB keymap?
Question Long version:
--
My cygwin bash pompt is configured for a "gb" keyboard
-- If I press the @ key I get an "@".
If I run the following command from a bash prompt
  Xwin.exe -emulate3buttons -query remote_host &
The log file "/tmp/XWinrl.log" contains the following error:

  Rules = "xfree86" Model = "pc105" Layout = "gb" Variant = "(null)"
Options = "(null)"
Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap

If I open an xterm and press the "@" key I get a double quote
key -- which is to be expected with the above error as it is what a
US key mapping gives.
I have gone throught archive and the previous thread which
came closes to answering my question was:
the post by Alexander Gottwald
  http://sources.redhat.com/ml/cygwin-xfree/2003-02/msg00185.html
with a URL to a minimal XF86Config
  http://www.tu-chemnitz.de/~goal/xfree/XF86Config.bz2
I have installed the file as /etc/x11/XF86Config-4 then uncommented
and modified the lines
  # Option "XkbRules" "xfree86"
  # Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
  # Option "XkbLayout" "de"
to
Option "XkbRules" "xfree86"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "gb"
Now when I run:
  Xwin.exe -emulate3buttons -query remote_host &
The log file contains:
  [snip]
  (==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config-4"
  [snip]
(==) Using preset keyboard for "English (United Kingdom)" (0809),
type "4"
(**) Using keyboard "Keyboard1" as primary keyboard
  (**) Option "XkbRules" "xfree86"
  (**) XKB: rules: "xfree86"
  (**) Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
  (**) XKB: model: "pc105"
  (**) Option "XkbLayout" "gb"
  (**) XKB: layout: "gb"
  Rules = "xfree86" Model = "pc105" Layout = "gb" Variant = "(null)"
Options = "(null)"
Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap

What do I have to do to get Xwin.exe to read the gb XKB keymap?

BTW: Yes I know that I can run xmodmap as a client application. But
I would like to get the correct keyboard into the server without
doing this, so that the remote login clients(s) have access to the
correct key bindings.

xmodmap with XWin -query

2003-07-01 Thread D Schlatterbeck
Scanning mail archives I didn't find something helpful
starting XWin with an option for other than an US-keyboard
when starting XWin with the "-query remotehost" - option=20
to access a remote xdm-login.
Since my experience is negligible I need a somewhat=20
detailed description.
Up to now I tried to launch xmodmap xmodmap.de and
setxkbmap de. putting those commands into the script before
the XWin-command leads to "unable to open display"-
message. Putting it after the XWin-command leads to=20
execution after termination. starting XWin with &-option
also doesn't work.
Both variants work fine starting XWin with a local Window
manager.

Any suggestions?

I can tell you that running xhost on your Windows machine won't help

within your -query session. That should setup XWin.exe on your machine to
accept connections from local clients. The reason you can run xhost on your

I think it would be better if xwinclip process '-display' option as

(Someone may say that it's the bash's fault since bash does not set
DISPLAY environment variable.)

I tried 'export DISPLAY=:0' and 'xwinclip' instead of doing
'xwinclip -display :0', then it works. Of course, I did
'xhost win_host_name' on the terminal before doing this.

One more feature request: It would be better if the option for silent

Anyway, thank you for xwinclip. It helps me a lot.

I'm using Windows XP. I succeeded copy&paste text between Windows

	UnicodeSupport - Windows NT/2000/XP
Could not open display, try: 1, sleeping: 4
Could not open display, try: 2, sleeping: 4
Could not open display, try: 3, sleeping: 4
Failed opening the display, giving up

I added my host to X control list, using "xhost" and tried
"xwinclip -display :0" but it gives same error message.
Since "xclipboard -display :0" worked, I bet I did not wrong
in X control list.

I don't know how the xwinclip.exe works.
Please give me some information or pointers about this problem.

French keyboard : XWin -query

2002-09-13 Thread UTZEL Nadine

Hello,

I try to replace Exceed by Xfree86 in my department of research.
In my .bat file, I generate a keymap and I connect to a hostname parameter

So, at the login windows, my keyboard is french and so during my session.

But, the ALT GR doesn't work. So we can't use XFree86, because our

What is your solution for this problem ?

Thanks.
