I can only read it as that which remains after the end caps and

But you're not Jim.

If the sphere is 10cm in height does that mean it's sitting on the round
part of the sphere or the removed end caps (these two 'diameters' are
 not equal)?
If you want to pick nits it's not explicit about the orientation but

based on the phrase lowered onto I assume it was drilled out

of the thing as it would sit after being drilled and without any pitch

I'm no freaking good at math, but I suspect that the volume of a
sphere with a core removed is equal to a an uncored sphere of the same
height.

Hm.

I don't have the formulas handy to figure this out, and I'm probably

Re: Property Rights

2002-01-28 Thread mattd

  By my
reckoning, property rights require only one party and their possession of
the means and intent to keep other parties from using that property.

Yeah, and as they say inside, everyones got to sleep sometime.

Imagine for a moment that, as ordinary citizens were watching the evening
news, they see an act by a government employee or officeholder that they
feel violates their rights, abuses the public's trust or misuses the powers
that they feel should be limited. What if they could go to their computers,
type in the miscreant's name, and select a dollar amount. If 0.1 percent of
the population, or one person in a thousand, was willing to pay $1 to see
some government slimeball dead, that would be in effect, a $250,000 bounty

I disagree. Life Property. One can have life with absolutely no
property. One can not have property without life.

Simple proof using reductio ad absurdam:

Let us assume you are correct, and the right to life does NOT imply any
right to property.

Consider the following hypothetical (but feasible) scenario:

A stalks B. Whenever B acquires food or drink, A deprives him of it. B
has no right to property, so A has done no wrong.

Eventually, however, B dies of starvation or thirst. A has deprived him
of his life by depriving him only of property, thus refuting the initial

USS Greeneville: deadliest thing in the sea

2002-01-28 Thread Anonymous

http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGAC0FFG0XC.html

WASHINGTON (AP) - A U.S. Navy submarine and an amphibious
transport ship collided off the coast of Oman as they were getting ready to
transfer two sailors, but no one was injured. The sub was the same one that
collided with a Japanese fishing boat off the Hawaiian coast last year.

The incident Sunday punctured the fuel tank of the amphibious transport dock
ship USS Ogden and caused some damage to the submarine USS Greeneville,
 Pentagon officials said Monday.

The Greeneville had collided with a Japanese fishing vessel off the Hawaiian coast
on Feb. 9, 2001, leaving nine Japanese dead. And on its first major deployment
after that incident, the sub grounded while trying to enter the Saipan seaport last
 August in rough seas.

key characteristics of such a subspecies ought to be: skill at deception, lack
of concern for the suffering of others, ease and flexibility in the
exploitation of others, extreme reluctance to be responsible for others
(including, in the case of males, their own offspring), and total lack of real
concern for the opinion of others. These are psychopathic traits. The point
here is that psychopathy is not a disorder because psychopaths (and their
mental characteristics) are performing exactly as they were designed by natural
selection. According to this view, psychopathy is an adaptation.

Our theory is that, although nonpsychopaths are capable of some criminal
behaviour under the right (wrong) circumstances, psychopaths form a distinct
subgroup of humans who use distinct life-long deception reproductive strategies
under all circumstances.

Nonsense. It sounds more like a play to a political audience than to a
scientific one. Part of an engine for classifying dissenters and sending
them to the gulags rather than a scholarly work.

Interesting puzzle--though your handling of the drill-size issue
reminds me of a cautionary tale from my modeling and simulation class:

Beaming Engineer 1: You know, I've been working on this all month--I think
Ive just invented the worlds most perfect chichen plucking machine!

Doubtful Engineer 2: Really?

Engineer One: Surewell, under the assumption that the chickens are perfectly
spherical.

I've seen plucking machines that worked very efficiently and the
chickens were conventional, not spherical. I bet the guys who made them
work were better at solving problems than those who tried and failed to
bring a machine to market.

Though you're right that it's vitally important to find an elegant solution to
your problem, gotta watch out for those spherical chickens. I would have
thought the thing to do next is choose a range of actual drill bits capable of
drilling plutonium, note their properties and create a table of values by
working through the equation that way. Oh well.

It's a geometry problem not a metal shop problem. Meant to be done in
your head or on paper. Having made a couple of physical examples you've
spent a great deal of money and time relative to the guy ( Anonymous )
who does it on paper and, worse, you know less when you're through. I've
always preferred to work things out before I crank up the Bridgeport.

Granted, real-world problems are not always neat and tidy, that makes
getting the fundamentals correct even more important. Unless you think
the economics are irrelevant.

It's still hilarious though. Offered for your consideration as a counterpart to
the recently-offered news story on the study that proves humans had very good
reasons to evolve into vindictive conformist sheep.

True, one would hope no spherical chicken pluckers made it to market. Unless
the DoD put out a RFP for one, that is. Wouldn't put it past em. There could be
a whole warehouse of Defense Department spherical chicken pluckers piled to the
ceiling somewhere for all I know... LOL

Geometry first, sure. Without the fundamentals you're lost...but I realized that
for no good reason at all I decided to take your answer and turn it into a
decision analysis problem--hence the table of values and need for a range of
drill bit specs. Showing my bias, I guess.

a whole warehouse of Defense Department spherical chicken pluckers piled to the
ceiling somewhere for all I know... LOL

That could very well be the case. However, it's nothing that couldn't be
rectified by a multimillion dollar technology commercialization effort
aimed at converting them to soccer ball cleaners.

Once a submarine has tasted human blood it just can't be trusted.

Max Stirner The Ego and It's Own (Rebel Press
London 1993, available from Freedom press in
London)

Max Stirner is a relatively obscure figure in anarchist and left wing
thought. He has influenced many who regard themselves as
anarcho-individualists such as the Americans, Lysander Spooner and
Benjamin Tucker and modern polemicists such as Bob Black. He also
has some following among anarcho-communists, notably in Glasgow
where a Stirnerist tradition has persisted to this day. Stirner was an
egoist who railed against all doctrines and beliefs which demanded a
subordination of the individual will to their leadership. So you might ask
why I should be interested in trying to outline some of his ideas in the
magazine of an organisation committed to a collective
anarcho-communist vision of society? I would say for two reasons.

Firstly Stirner's ideas are the perfect corrective to those expounded by
authoritarian socialists. Indeed, they came to realise this very quickly
and condemned Stirner almost from day one. Marx and Engels
devoted a whole 300-page book to denouncing his ideas - The
German Ideology published in 1846. The semi hysterical and personal
nature of the criticisms tell us just how worried they were. They
condemned him as the emptiest, shallowest brain among the
philosophers whose whole activity is limited to trying a few,
hackneyed, casuistical tricks on the world handed down to him by
philosophical tradition. This effort alone such surely alert us that the
fact that he might be saying something interesting! Stirner's absolute
contempt for those who would be masters allowed him to clearly and
accurately predict the disaster that happened when socialist ideas
were elevated to the level of a state religion:

Society, from which we have everything, is a new master, a
new spook, a new 'supreme being' which 'takes us into it
service and allegiance.'

There's a second and deeper relevance to his thinking though. All
anarchists strive to maximise individual liberty. In the Workers
Solidarity Movement our aim is to maximise individual freedom through
collective means. But in order to do this it is important that people are
committed to the ideas of collectively organising with others. This is an
idea that is common to anarchists and many others on the left.
However much less time is devoted, even by anarchists, to thinking
about what it would actually mean to live in an anarchist society.
Freedom cannot be handed out. It is only meaningful to people who
really desire it and that means strong individuals knowing what they
want. What does it mean to be free or as Stirner puts it self owned?
Unless we really appreciate what this means and how valuable it is
then we might as well give up and let the state and the capitalists do our
thinking for us!

What were his ideas?

Surely if socialism is anything it is the opposite of selfishness and
egoism. In fact opponents often argue that, while the ideas of socialism
and anarchism are attractive, human greed makes it unrealisable in
practise. We are told that it's the natural greedy condition of humanity
that makes socialism an impossible dream. Yet what if it was all turned
on its head? What if socialism sprung firstly from a greedy snatching at
life's possibilities to turn them to personal advantage? What if it was
our own individual greed and egoism that pulled us out of capitalism
and into a new world? The great are only great because we are on our
knees; what happens if we all get up? This is the paradox suggested by
Stirner in The Ego and Its Own

Max Stirner (real name Caspar Schmidt) was a member of a small
group of left leaning German intellectuals styling themselves the free
and including Marx and Engels. Stirner wrote many essays, compiled
and edited a history of reaction and translated works by Adam Smith.
However this book is his only completed original work. Before I launch
into some of the ideas contained in the book, it is only fair to warn
anyone who does get their hands on it that it is not an easy read. In
fact it is very badly written and I can only pity the translator. Firstly
Stirner can sarcastically quote summaries of other people's ideas as if
he agreed with them and then suddenly switch to his own views.
Secondly there is a high level of abstraction in the book with often the
same word such as man being used to mean very different things
within the same paragraph. That having been said a patient reading will
give many rewards!

The book is a searing attack on all abstract belief systems, starting
and working out from religious ideas to encompass all political beliefs
as being religious in nature. The first paragraph sets the tone, with
Stirner sarcastically putting forward what he sees as the enemy's line:

What is not supposed to be my concern, first and foremost,
the good cause, then God's cause, the cause of mankind, of
truth, of freedom, of humanity, of justice,

Hello, feel free to publish my responses to your questions
anywhere.

Was there any warning that investigation of your website
was heating up?
Yes. I have been monitoring government agencies
connecting to the site for a long time. I'd been noticing more
frequency with them coming back to the site. They had also
started intercepting all packets on my DSL line, and seized one
of my older AIM screen names for 12 days, so I knew
something was going to happen - soon. It was really obvious. I
even saw them outside my house at times. They have been
monitoring the site very, very extensively LONG before the
incriminating content which they were concerned about was
posted onto the site. They simply used this content as an
excuse to obtain a warrant for the raid.

As a victim of one of the first post-Patriot Act
anti-terrorism raids, why do you think the Feds chose you?
Simply because Raisethefist was effective in what I was
doing. It's the same reason why Feds raid other activist
organizations. They're effective. And effectiveness within our
movement scares them. They're afraid. And they're going to try
and silence us any way they can.

Do you have a copy of the warrant that was served? What
did it say they were looking for?
I cannot post any contents of the warrant online. Yes I have
a copy of it. The warrant contains a lot of bogus information
and misinterpretations. The warrant has information on me
since I was 14 (I'm 18 now, almost 19).

Any idea how many agents/officers participated in the raid?
Yep, there was about 25-30 of them. They surrounded my
house with guns. Blocked off the garage door with a big bench,
had a door bammer, had cars all up and down the streets, then
2 agents knocked at my door, pulled me outside, and the FBI
came in and raided. My sister and her friends were home at
the time, and she refused to answer the door. I was currently
taking a nap and she woke me up to tell me that there were
police and undercover/FBI people all up and down the streets
looking at the house. That's when I got up and approached the
door.

Can you remember any exact quotes that the agents told
you - what precisely did they say about 9-11, your web site,
what they were looking for, etc.
They told me the main reason for the raid was because of
the content on the site, and they wanted to see who was
looking at it. This was not the main reason. It was an excuse.
The alledged content which they claim they were so concerned
about is from the Reclaim Guide. It's posted on thousands of
other web sites around the internet. Why didn't they raid
those? Why did they only come after Raisethefist.com? Again,
they've been watching the site for a long time, long before the
Reclaim Guide was even posted onto the site. They used this
as an excuse to get a warrant for the raid and seize all
computer equipment. I can't discuss the specifics over the
internet, but I know for sure that they didn't raid simply because
they wanted to see who was looking at the content on the site.

[Ed. note: The Reclaim Guide does not appear to be
readily available elsewhere, in its entirety, although the topics
covered are.]
One of the first things one of the head agents conducting
the raid asked me was, why did you grow your hair out? The
picture they have of me is a bit older when I had short hair.
They were acting as if I was trying to hide my appearance
from them. They then sat me down, started asking me
questions, etc. All this while the FBI was in my house with guns
drawn, and seizing all computer equipment.

The FBI, Secret Service, LAPD and LASD (Sheriffs Dept.)
participated in the raid. The Secret Service person kept asking
me if I'd like to see Bush killed. They were asking me a lot of
loaded questions.

What exactly did the agents take? How many computers
and how much was it all worth?

Not always. While I agree that exploitation is not the correct term,

are certain areas where legislation has created functional monopolies
whereby a creator has, if they wish their creation to be widely available,

Soldiers rebel over Palestinian policy

Jerusalem: Fifty-two Israeli combat reserve soldiers have announced they
will no longer fight in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, saying military
actions there are nothing to do with providing security for Israel and are
intended to control and degrade Palestinians.

In an advertisement in Israeli newspapers, the soldiers, some with the rank
of major, said Israel's stringent travel bans, which confine many
Palestinians to their communities, needlessly punished the Palestinians.
Israel says the closures are needed to prevent attacks by Palestinian
militants.

We declare that we will not continue to fight a war for peace in the
[Jewish] settlements [in the West Bank and Gaza Strip], the advertisement
said. We will not continue to fight on the other side of the Green Line
with an intent to control, expel, starve and degrade an entire people.

The Green Line refers to the invisible line separating Israel from the
territories it captured in the 1967 Middle East war.

The soldiers wrote that they decided to stop serving in the Palestinian
areas when it became clear to them that army orders had nothing to do with
security, and their only intent is to control the Palestinian people forever.
