Re: all about transferable off-line ecash (Re: Brands off-line tech)

2002-04-07 Thread Anonymous

The issue with off-line cash is this: has the coin being offered already
been spent?

With on-line cash, the offered coin is immediately deposited at the bank,
hence doubly-spent coins are detected instantly. With off-line cash
this cannot be done because by definition there is no connection to the
bank. Hence there is no way to know, off-line, if a coin has already
been spent.

The solution is to embed the identity of the withdrawer into the coin
when it is withdrawn from the bank, in such a way that this identity
will only be revealed if the coin is double-spent. That provides a
partial solution to the off-line scenario.

A coin is offered off-line, and the recipient again has no guarantee that
it hasn't been spent already. He accepts the coin anyway, and later when
he gets on-line he tries to deposit it at the bank. But he learns that
he was cheated; the coin had already been spent. Now he has a fall-back
solution: the doubly-spent coin reveals the embedded identity of the
party who withdrew it (and who doubly-spent it). He can call the cops
and try to track down and prosecute the cheater.

All off-line spending schemes work this way. All they can offer is
the hope of tracking down cheaters after the fact. They can never
offer the assurance of validity that an immediate on-line check can
provide.

With off-line coins, unlike on-line coins, the spender knows more than
he's telling. He knows secrets about those coins which would reveal his
identity; that is, his identity is embedded in some secret information
associated with the coin. When he spends it at a shop, he responds
to a random challenge from the shop, using his secret information.
The system is set up so that the shop, and later the bank, can validate
his response as being valid, proving that he truly owned a coin. For the
double-spending detection, the system is further arranged that if two
different shops offer two different random challenges, then from the
responses to these two challenges, the user's secret information and
therefore his identity is revealed.

To turn this into a transferrable system, we would allow a chain of
transfers before the bank gets involved. Alice spends the coin with Bob,
who spends it with Carol, who spends it with David, who deposits it at
the bank. There are two problems. First, only Alice knows the secret
information associated with the coin. She can't give all the secrets to
Bob, or else he would know her identity. So Bob only has a limited amount
of information about the coin. Second, after this chain of transfers,
if there was double-spending, it might have been anyone along the chain.
The system for double-spending detection has to be able to identify
which person was the cheater.

The solution which Adam describes works as follows. Each party
pre-withdraws a zero-value coin from the bank. This is an off-line
coin which has their identity encoded in it, if they double-spend it.
Alice first spends her coin with Bob in the normal off-line way. Bob ends
up with a transcript sufficient to prove that he received a presumably
valid coin from Alice (but one which might have been doubly-spent).

Now Bob wants to spend with Carol. He does two things: he gives her
the transcript of Alice's spend with him, which implicitly identifies
the value of the coin; and also he engages in the regular off-line
coin spend with her, using his zero-value coin.

If Carol then spends the coin with David, she does the same two things:
she gives David the transcript of Bob's spend with her (which itself
included the two parts above), and also spends a zero-value coin with
him. The resulting transcript now has three parts.

So it grows at each transfer, and in the end the transcript is deposited.
If there was a double-spend, someone spent his zero-value coin twice,
and his own identity is revealed.

There is one flaw, which is that Bob could use the same Alice transaction
with more than one zero-value coin, which he after all gets for free.
Carol can't tell that the Alice transaction she sees is the same one
someone else saw, and if Bob uses a unique zero-value coin for each spend,
then Bob's identity will not be revealed as it should be.

The fix for this is that when Bob receives the coin from Alice, knowing
that he is going to pass it on, he must link the specific zero-value coin
he will later use into the transcript he will receive of Alice's spend
with him. This is done by including a hash of the coin information into
the random challenge he sends to Alice. Then when he tries to pass the
coin on to Carol, she checks that the zero-value coin he is spending with
her matches the value used in the Alice transcript. That prevents Bob
from using two different zero-value coins with a single Alice transcript.

So it works, but broadly speaking there are two problems. First, off-line
coins suck, as described above. And second, because they grow, it is
possible to tell exactly how many hands a particular coin has

Why would Al Q. care about the US if the US were not in their backyard?
Its not like they care about US colonialism in the Americas, or Europe.

They learned (via CCCP, Lebanon, etc.) how to evict intruders from their

and as a wanna-be analyst you should be able to understand that.
In dropping the Towers, they were trying to wake up US taxpayers to

to wake up (vaporizing some jar-heads on the other side of the planet
does not truly impress), even harder to get to think, but that's the
situation.

Another reason: once you get a clearance, you can't speak
freely. The latest _Tech Review_ interviews an MIT Prof Postol,
who has been pointing out the lies behind Raytheon's Patriot

some friendly DoD folks came to him and asked him to read

Postol refused, knowing that this is a scheme used to silence

general science, you can speak your mind.

(BTW The basic deception is, if our gizmo can't discriminate this kind

Team Tushyfest settle obscenity charge news.

2002-04-07 Thread matthew X

THUMBS UP! OBSCENITY CASE SETTLES!

VAN NUYS (3.20.02) - Adam Glasser, aka Seymore Butts, announced today that
he and his attorney, Roger Diamond, have reached a settlement with the city
attorneys office regarding the obscenity charges filed against Glassers'
companies in March of 2001. Glassers' offices were raided in December of
2000 after an anonymous complaint was received by the city attorneys office
about a fisting scene in the movie "Tampa TushyFest Part 1".

The terms of the agreement follows

One of Glassers' companies, BBE Inc., would plead guilty to a public
nuisance charge and pay a $1000 fine to a victim's restitution fund. The
company will not be put on probation.
Glasser will agree to offer an edited "fisting free" version to every
customer in California.
All materials confiscated from Glassers' companies will be returned.
All other charges on Adam Glasser, Lila Glasser, BBE Inc., and Seymore Inc.
will be dismissed.
After signing the paper work and handing over a check to the city attorney
Glasser had this to say

"I am relieved its over and extremely satisfied with the outcome. I told
Roger from the onset that I wanted him to be as aggressive as possible in
defending this case. I told him I believed there was nothing obscene about
this movie and was willing to take the matter to trial if necessary. I am
glad to see that the new city attorney, Rocky Delgadiallo, who inherited
this case from his predecessor, took the time to review the matter and make
the proper decision. I also applaud him for deciding to review their do's
and don'ts list in regards to sex acts depicted in adult materials. Since
the list they were working off was written in 1981, I think its about time!

As for the settlement itself, we have always offered an unedited version of
this movie to customers in more conservative states.

So for us, everything remains status quo except now we know we are legally
allowed to sell the unedited version here in California. All in all, I
think its a great day for the adult industry, the free speech movement and
especially all the millions of consumers who enjoy their rights to watch
the adult entertainment of their choice!"

Castle Wolfensen;boycott their bonds and bankrupt them.

2002-04-07 Thread matthew X

http://www.infoshop.org/inews/stories.php?story=02/04/04/3211548
Extract.
"...Many activists began to think then that, after the blip of 11
September, world events were still moving their way. Some among them saw
the need to push the movement beyond the now familiar scenes of protests
and riots. They decided, in fact, to bankrupt the World Bank.
It might sound far-fetched. The bank, after all, is a huge global
operation. It is owed $2.5trn by developing countries and employs 10,000
people worldwide. In 1997, it extracted $1bn more from Africa than it lent
to the continent.
But who owns the World Bank? We do. Ordinary people in the west - through
their trade unions, churches, town councils, universities and private
investments - own the bank, but they don't know that. The bank raises
nearly all its funds by issuing bonds on the private market. These are
often held by socially minded institutions that would be horrified to think
they were propping up an ultra-neoliberal organisation.
So activists have come up with a simple way of breaking the bank: boycott
their bonds and bankrupt them.
Dennis Brutus, a patron of Jubilee 2000 South Africa and a founder member
of the new campaign, has been told many times before that boycotts achieve
nothing. He heard people say it when he was a prisoner on Robben Island and
was pleading for the world to boycott South African goods. He is unashamed
in drawing a direct parallel: "We need to break the power of the World Bank
over developing countries," he explains, "as the disinvestment movement
helped break the power of the apartheid regime in South Africa."

Message received by Statewatch: 28.3.02: "The MET police have been
threatening to raid website hosts who have tried to host the website for
this years "May Day Festival of Alternatives". The content of what should
be available at www.ourmayday.org.uk is information about the 2002 "May Day
Festival of Alternatives". Running from 16th April - May 6th, the programme
of events mostly includes music performances, film screenings, and
workshops on a variety of issues and diy skill sharing, as well as ideas
for protests on 1 May itself. The website should have 'gone live' last
month, however at least 3 different website hosts who agreed to host the
site have been quickly approached by police, when the domain name
'ourmayday.org.uk' has been pointed at their servers. MET Police have
either contacted the hosts by phone or in person, demanding to know all of
the personal details of the people behind the 'ourmayday' website. The MET
Police have also told the hosts they must remove the site (or not to host
it) or be faced with a police raid during which their web servers would be
seized. The Police have not said under what legislation they are making
these demands and threats. As a result of the police threats the webhosts
have so far declined to host the website. Recently the website was
temporarily hosted on a German website, but soon after the whole server
which also hosts many other websites 'went down' and has not been restored.
At this time it is not known if this is connected to British police
activity. Appeals have now been made for other servers to host the website.
NB: Text on the website and on May Day leaflets says: "This Mayday we are
responding to the frequently asked question 'What are you for? What do you
actually want?' We aim to show our goals of creating a society based on
solidarity, autonomy and co-operation - in practice. We want to show that
there is a future beyond capitalism, wage-labour and the state;" "The
Festival will consist of around 10 days of community-based events aiming at
celebration, subversion and DIY liberation; and to demonstrate the
diversity of our movement, with the intention of building long-range
sustained alternatives." "The Mayday Festival of Alternatives is inspired
by a month of dissident art/culture events in France, held last year in
