It's OK: the order in which they sucked wasn't really relevent anyway :-)

If Governments really want us to behave like civilized human beings, they
should give serious consideration towards setting a better example:
Ruling by force, rather than consensus; the unrestrained application of
unjust laws (which the victim-populations were never allowed input on in
the first place); the State policy of justice only for the rich and
elected; the intentional abuse and occassionally destruction of entire
populations merely to distract an already apathetic and numb electorate...
This type of demogoguery must surely wipe out the fascist United States
as surely as it wiped out the fascist Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

The views expressed here are mine, and NOT those of my employers,
associates, or others. Besides, if it *were* the opinion of all of
those people, I doubt there would be a problem to bitch about in the
first place...

States and Social Revolutions
A Comparative Analysis of France, Russia and China

Theda Skocpol
£19.95

May 1979 | Paperback (Hardback) | 448 pages | ISBN: 0521294991

In stock
State structures, international forces, and class relations: Theda Skocpol
shows how all three combine to explain the origins and accomplishments of
social-revolutionary transformations. From France in the 1790s to Vietnam
in the 1970s, social revolutions have been rare but undeniably of enormous
importance in modern world history. States and Social Revolutions provides
a new frame of reference for analyzing the causes, the conflicts, and the
outcomes of such revolutions. And it develops in depth a rigorous,
comparative historical analysis of three major cases: the French Revolution
of 1787 through the early 1800s, the Russian Revolution of 1917 through the
1930s, and the Chinese Revolution of 1911 through the 1960s. Believing that
existing theories of revolution, both Marxist and non-Marxist, are
inadequate to explain the actual historical patterns of revolutions, the
author urges us to adopt fresh perspectives. She argues for structural
rather than voluntarist analysis, and for an emphasis on the effects of
transnational and world-historical contexts upon domestic political
conflicts. Above all, she maintains that states conceived as administrative
and coercive organizations potentially autonomous from class controls and
interests must be made central to explanations of revolutions.

COMMUNICATIONS AND MEDIA
Goodwill Lacking
By William Powers, National Journal
© National Journal Group Inc.
Friday, Dec. 20, 2002

As Trent Lott turned on the spit and everyone waited for him to be done,
the media chatter ran to what a marvelous event this had been and, gosh,
why didn't we think of it earlier? "Why did it take so long for most major
newspapers and networks to jump on the controversy, even after it was
reported?" asked CNN's Howard Kurtz. "The way this story sat around for
several days last week before the politicians turned their blood up to boil
is... a bit suspicious," wrote Michael Kinsley in Time.

If goodwill were a bank account, Trent Lott had a shockingly low balance.

Why the Lott story took off so slowly is a good question. But just as good,
and in some ways more intriguing, is the opposite question of why this
story took off at all, and once it did, why it had such staying power.
After all, Lott is not the first national political figure to say or do
something that most people found deeply wrong. In a television interview
just last year, Sen. Robert C. Byrd twice used the phrase "white niggers."
But when Byrd apologized, the story went away. There are countless other
examples of pols who spoke or behaved offensively, performed some act of
contrition, and returned to business as usual.

Why do some transgressors become such pariahs that they are driven out of
public life (think Jim Wright, Bob Packwood), while others not only survive
their ignominy but go on to prosper (Bill Clinton)? Every scandal is
different, of course, and the rules of the game change over time. It's hard
to imagine Ted Kennedy, or any other national figure, surviving a
Chappaquiddick-like incident today.

But there is one factor that plays a huge role in all these stories, and
yet it has been scarcely mentioned in the last few weeks: goodwill. I mean
that free-floating sense of generosity and tolerance that allows us to
excuse errors, often very grievous ones, made by certain public figures.
Over time, as they emerge into public consciousness, some pols manage to
build up major stores of this stuff, and it keeps them afloat in a time of
scandal. Others accrue little or no goodwill, and when these unfortunate
souls get in trouble, they sink like a stone.

Based on the events of the last week, we can safely place Lott among the
goodwill-deficient. It's true his story took several days to get traction,
but once it did, it soon became clear that very few people in politics or
the media had warm feelings of any kind about the Senate majority leader.
If goodwill were a bank account, Lott had a shockingly low balance,
especially for someone who has been in public life for so long and risen so
high. Why?

Goodwill is abstract and elusive. Sometimes you don't even realize someone
has it until the person gets in trouble and you find yourself in a
forgiving mood. But there are certain identifiable personal traits that
greatly increase a politician's chances of building goodwill, and this week
seems a good time to note a few of them:

1. Heroism. Combat veterans are magnets for goodwill, and authentic war
heroes are off the charts. Quick, which of the "Keating Five" not only put
that nasty little scandal behind him but went on to become a political rock
star and presidential contender? Answer: John McCain, the former POW.
Earlier this year, there was a brief media frenzy over revelations about
former Sen. Bob Kerrey's role in a massacre of civilians in wartime
Vietnam. Today, Kerrey remains an elder statesman, frequently appearing on
TV and occasionally mentioned as presidential material. But then, he also
won the Medal of Honor in Vietnam, and lost part of a leg. Goodwill doesn't
get any richer.

2. Principles. Most politicians are wind socks, but the few who are not,
those who appear to stand by their convictions come what may, build massive
reserves of goodwill. Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan were both in this
category. So was Paul Wellstone. It's hard to think of many current members
of Congress who have joined these avatars of principle. Though Lott's
tribute to Sen. Strom Thurmond suggested he had held fast to certain
longtime beliefs, they were repugnant beliefs, and thus didn't qualify.

3. Durability. There's a kind of goodwill that comes from having survived a
difficult challenge, or having just hung in there. Anyone who has run for
president gets goodwill points for trying. Seasoned scandal veterans like
Hillary Clinton often receive grudging respect, and a little goodwill,
merely for having toughed out their scandals. After he resigned in
disgrace, Richard Nixon built up a strange kind of goodwill for sticking
with the statesman shtick and maintaining a semblance of personal dignity.
This is survivor's goodwill. Ancient members of Congress, such as Byrd and
Thurmond, get enormous goodwill from their sheer durability, and can say or
do almost anyt

Aryan Rant.

Sez who? A lot of people attracted to anarchism seem to think like Lord
Acton, that power corrupts and the less your average person has over you the
safer you'll be.
Isn't Christianity the belief that people are basically good?

>>>that they are corrupted by interaction with others. And as a result the
way to make the world a more idyllic place is to minimize the ways in which
individuals may interact (eg abolition of government, law, etc.).<<<

This is really spectacular bollocks and betrays your complete pig ignorance
of anarchism.

by anything other than simple existance. <<<

Well I do believe most people are good and I would hardly bother trying
anything if I didn't think that. You have made it clear in the past that
ya'll think we need the state and representative democracy is the best way
to run it.No wonder everyone here cant stand you.

>>>Note that anarchism is a form of socialism or 'control economy' style

No more than a free market jimmy. There is a difference between a widely

Due to server errors, you may get this message more then once. I'm so sorry about that.

Those of us that believe that Jesus is the son of God are called Christians. To become
a Christian you must first accept Jesus, and then you must be Baptize with water.
(Holy Water for some Churches.) After this process the Christian must obey all the
rules. The most common rules are the Ten Commandments. Then He or She must spread the
faith, not just by their words, but also by their acts. Finally, He or She must live
the faith. It all seems simple, doesn't it? Well, we all try our best. If your like
most people who has to put up with that “co-worker from Hell.” That could make
following Christ very difficult. Nevertheless, we all must carry our Cross, whether we
want to our not.

It seems we all have forgotten just what our responsibilities are. Not just to our
selves but to each other as well. We need to get the Gospels out to those that need
it. We need to feed the poor. We also need to heal the sick with medicine. It is by
our works that we will be known. Therefore, we need to get out there and do something.
We must not sit at home looking and waiting for your ship to come in. I'm not sure if
you notice, but your ship is extremely late. And it is a strong possibly that your
ship got lost and may never come to shore. Therefore, we would like your help.

We are sending a team over seas to convert non-Christian to Christians. Depending on

The Return of Mad Max.

2002-12-29 Thread Matthew X
The Egoism of Max Stirner
By Sidney Parker
(The following extracts are taken from my booklet entitled THE EGOISM OF
MAX STIRNER: SOME CRITICAL BIBLIOGRAPHICAL NOTES to be published by the
Mackay Society of New York)
Albert Camus
Camus devotes a section of THE REBEL to Stirner. Despite a fairly accurate
summarization of some of Stirner's ideas he nonetheless consigns him to
dwelling in a desert of isolation and negation "drunk with destruction".
Camus accuses Stirner of going "as far as he can in blasphemy" as if in
some strange way an atheist like Stirner can "blaspheme" against something
he does not believe in. He proclaims that Stirner is "intoxicated" with the
"perspective" of "justifying" crime without mentioning that Stirner
carefully distinguishes between the ordinary criminal and the "criminal" as
violator of the "sacred". He brands Stirner as the direct ancestor of
"terrorist anarchy" when in fact Stirner regards political terrorists as
acting under the possession of a "spook". He furthermore misquotes Stirner
by asserting that he "specifies" in relation to other human beings "kill
them, do not martyr them" when in fact he writes "I can kill them, not
torture them" - and this in relation to the moralist who both kills and
tortures to serve the "concept of the 'good'".
Although throughout his book Camus is concerned to present "the rebel" as a
preferred alternative to "the revolutionary" he nowhere acknowledges that
this distinction is taken from the one that Stirner makes between "the
revolutionary" and "the insurrectionist". That this should occur in a work
whose purpose is a somewhat frantic attempt at rehabilitating "ethics" well
illustrates Stirner's ironic statement that "the hard fist of morality

Stoicism
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Stoicism is a school of philosophy commonly associated with such
philosophers as Cicero, Seneca, Marcus Aurelius, and Epictetus.
Organized at Athens in the third century B.C.E. (310 BC) by Zeno of Citium
and Chrysippus. The Stoics provided a unified account of the world that
comprised formal logic, materialistic physics, and naturalistic ethics.
Later Roman Stoics emphasized more exclusively the development of
recommendations for living in harmony with a natural world over which one
has no direct control.
The Stoic philosophy developed from that of the Cynics whose founder,
Antisthenes, had been a disciple of Socrates. The Stoics emphasized ethics
as the main field of knowledge, but they also developed theories of logic
and natural science to support their ethical doctrines.
Holding a somewhat materialistic conception of nature they followed
Heraclitus in believing the primary substance to be fire. They also
embraced his concept of Logos which they identified with the energy, law,
reason, and providence found throughout nature.
They held Logos to be the animating or 'active principle' of all reality.
The Logos was conceived as a rational divine power that orders and directs
the universe; it was identified with God, nature, and fate. Human reason
and the human soul were both considered part of the divine Logos, and
therefore immortal.
The foundation of Stoic ethics is the principle, proclaimed earlier by the
Cynics, that good lies in the state of the soul itself, in wisdom and
restraint. Stoic ethics stressed the rule "Follow where Reason leads"; one
must therefore resist the influence of the passions-love, hate, fear, pain,
and pleasure.
Living according to nature or reason, they held, is living in conformity
with the divine order of the universe. The four cardinal virtues of the
Stoic philosophy are wisdom, courage, justice, and temperance, a
classification derived from the teachings of Plato.
A distinctive feature of Stoicism is its cosmopolitanism. All people are
manifestations of the one universal spirit and should, according to the
Stoics, live in brotherly love and readily help one another. They held that
external differences such as rank and wealth are of no importance in social
relationships. Thus, before the rise of Christianity, Stoics recognized and
advocated the brotherhood of humanity and the natural equality of all human
beings. Stoicism became the most influential school of the Greco-Roman
world and produced a number of remarkable writers and personalities.

ZENO OF CITIUM
Zeno of Citium (not to be confused with Zeno of Elias) was the founder of
the Stoic school of philosophy, which (along with its rival, Epicureanism)
came to dominate the thinking of the Hellenistic world, and later, the
Roman Empire, with some elements of Stoic thought even influencing early
Christianity. For a long time the stoics have had a bad press, Stoicism
being associated in the popular imagination with a grim and pessimistic
world-view, in contrast to the jolly Epicureans. Fortunately, however,
Stoicism is now being re-evaluated by groups as diverse as psychotherapists
and semioticians, and it is therefore frustrating that so little is known
of the original Stoic philosophy as taught by Zeno. None of Zeno's works
have survived; all we know of him is contained in a few quotations and
anecdotes in the works of his followers and critics. Most of these are
collected in Book VII of Diogenes Laertius' Lives of Eminent Philosophers,
from which the following information is taken.
Zeno was born in 333 B.C. in the town of Citium, a Greek colony which also
had a large Phoenician population; Zeno himself may well have had
Phoenician ancestry. For most of his youth he was a merchant, but, so the
story has it, at the age of thirty, he was shipwrecked while transporting
purple dye from Phoenicia to Peiraeus. While kicking his heels in Athens,
he frequented a bookshop, where he was drawn to the works of Socrates.
Asking the shopkeeper where men like Socrates could be found, he received
the reply "Follow that man." The man in question was Crates the Cynic, and
Zeno became his pupil, later commenting "I made a prosperous voyage when I
was shipwrecked."
Crates appears to have been a hard master. Zeno was overly conscious of
social propriety (a habit which he always found hard to shake, despite his
anarchistic views), and Crates attempted to cure this by making him carry a
pot of lentils through the streets of Athens. Like a Zen master, Crates
suddenly smashed the pot with his staff, and Zeno ran away in embarrassment
with lentil soup dripping down his legs and Crates calling after him: "Why
run away, my little Phoenician? Nothing terrible has befallen you!" It was
under Crates' tutelage that Zeno wrote his greatest work, the Republic.
Eventually Zeno began to teach in his own right, wandering up and down the
arcade of painted columns known as the "Stoa".
Zeno certainly seems to have inherited the Cynics' preference for gruff
speech and shocking behaviour. He was continually making fun of the fops of
Athens, commenting on a youth who was taking pains to avoid stepping in
some mud, that it was only because he couldn't see his reflection in it. Of
another, who was given to displays of rhetoric, he said "Your ears have
slid down and merged in your tongue." He attempted to avoid attracting too
many followers by associating with (according to Timon) "a crowd of
ignorant serfs, who surpassed all men in beggary", and was also in the
habit of asking passers by for small change. Despite this, he was held in
high esteem by the citizens of Athens, and was even given the keys to the
city. He was also invited to act as an advisor to King Anigonus of Macedon,
but he turned this down, sending his pupil Persaeus, instead.
Not much is known of Zeno's personal life. He appears to have continued his
interest in trade, though by all accounts his life was fairly frugal, his
main enjoyment being to sit in the sun eating figs and drinking wine. In
fact, contrary to the popular image of Stoicism, Zeno seems to have liked
his drink, commenting (presumably while staggering drunkenly) that it was
better to slip with the feet than with the tongue. He was not fond of being
waited upon (possibly due to the Cynics' and Stoics' opposition to
slavery), though it was said that he occasionally had a maid-servant wait
at his parties "in order not to appear a misogynist." He probably died in
261 B.C., striking the ground with his fist and quoting the line from
Niobe, "I come, I come, why do you call me?"
Most of what we know of Zeno's philosophy is extrapolation from later
Stoics, notably Epictetus. The Republic describes a Stoic Utopia of
rational citizens. It seems similar to the later Utopias of the Anarchists:
there is no money and it has no temples or lawcourts, these being
unnecessary for rational beings. Zeno, like all the Stoics, preached
equality of the sexes, and also claimed that men and women should dress
alike. Moreover, he said that no part of the body should be completely
covered, "modesty" being anathema to the early Stoics. He received
notoriety for his advocacy of what is generally referred to as "community
of women" or "community of wives", though a better term would probably be
"free love", since the former terms imply that women are commodities which
should be shared freely, and this would run counter to Stoic doctrine. In
general, the early Stoics were un

Burning Bridges to the New Millennium (and making deeper connections in our
lives)

This is NOT a ransom note, manifesto, or communiqué. This is not meant to
be anything more then a declaration of autonomy, the remembering of the
anarchist idea of free association, and a re-commitment to the spirit of NO
COMPROMISE!

As I try to comprehend the enormity of the disease of civilization, and how
it has been declared terminal by every type of expert to the simplest folk
of the land, I contemplate on the amount of time and energy (and security)
wasted trying to form artificial connections with those I haven't much real
affinity. I have found my family, my pack. We are amorphous on one level,
always growing and shrinking, yet we are made of the same basic elements.
We sometimes travel to other lands to spread ideas of dissent and to learn
some wicked new tricks, and occasionally we don't connect again for a
season, a couple years, or sometimes even a lifetime. In this
post-colonial, post-modern, post-office world we "live" in, my crew comes
from different positions, products, and places. We are of different ethnic,
cultural, and economic backgrounds. We are of different ages, sexual
orientations, and interests. We may identify differently in the political
and social contexts, but we do have some basic things in common which unite
us in life and in resistance - It is our hatred of all domesticating and
dominating powers, and our desire to be wild human-animals once again.

We are a strange strain, yet we are just like you. In fact, we may be you!
We have long-term visions, ongoing affinity on specific goals, and daily
projects together. We respect, but are not afraid to challenge and debate
our different tactics. We often discuss our overlapping, converging, or
even seemingly contrasting strategies. We are always trying to deepen our
connection with each other and care for our damaged bodies and tormented
souls, as we become closer to the communal beings we once were, despite the
alienation and isolation that the modern mega-machine imposes upon us.

No, we are not perfect. We are part of the fractured existence, a
by-product of the suffocating and domesticating order, but we know what we
feel . . . and it is rage! Despite the odds and the institutions of
control, we have been able to connect to one of our primal instincts - the
urge to live and to fight back! All around us we see our world being
destroyed, the killing, the torture, and the slavery being inflicted on all
of life, and our rage continues to grow! Our rage has engulfed us, and now
it must flow. Rage over the misery brought on by those whose only salvation
will be a bullet in the head. Rage over the war on the earth and her
creatures - a war that has been going on for thousands of years, and is
always escalating. Rage at the idea of this death-culture being the only
prospect for us, then we die. No, we will not submit to the apparatus of
the state, the institutions of power, the ideologies of order! We will
resist, and continue to resist. When we have finally destroyed our
oppressors, we will burn their remains and the rubble of their
civilization, and we will bury its ruins deep so we may begin to heal.

We are filled with great love. Love of the beautiful chaos of life. Love
for the organic and wild connections we make with the earth and with each
other. Love for those who have compassion for our ravaged bodies,
programmed minds, and broken hearts. Love for those regaining our lost
knowledge and primitive spirit. Love for those with the courage and passion
to resist and to create anarchy now.

Our battle call is a treasonous one. Yes, we have declared war on the
existing order. We try to understand its foundations, so we may crack them.
We study its institutions, so we can un

New Zealand police are investigating three Middle Eastern men who tried to
enrol in a diving course that would teach them how to use explosives.

The three signed up for a commercial diving course in Hamilton but after
paying $NZ8,000 ($A7,470) each, two of them failed to show up, the Sunday
Star-Times newspaper reported.

The other man attended only the first session and none has since tried to
get their money back.

The incident has prompted fears terrorists could be trying to learn how to
carry out underwater attacks.

New Zealand police launched an inquiry into the incident, which occurred
about six months ago, and investigations are now being dealt with at a
national level.
"The matter regarding the dive school is subject to an active inquiry but
we are unable to make any further comment at this stage," police
spokeswoman Sarah Martin said.

Alan Strong, owner of Hamilton's Dive HQ, said he had notified police about
the three men, but said officers missed the chance to seize closed circuit
TV footage of the trio because they did not follow up the matter until
weeks later.

The dive school cameras automatically tape over their security footage at
the start of each month.

"I do not know if they were terrorists, but to have these three Middle
Eastern guys, and then they never come back for their money, is not a New
Zealand thing at all. It was unusual," said Strong.

"They had no diving experience at all so we enrolled them on a three-month
learners course. The one that did turn up rang the next week and said he
had broken his leg and arm but we've never heard from them since."

Activists delight in detention fires

30dec02

REFUGEE activists have welcomed a spate of fires at detention centres,
blaming Federal Government policies for the blazes that have left a damage
bill of more than $2.25 million.

In the latest incident, a deliberately-lit fire forced the evacuation of a
residential block at Western Australia's Port Hedland detention centre
early today.
The blaze followed arson attacks which destroyed large parts of the Baxter
detention centre, near Port Augusta in South Australia, at the weekend.

This morning, Jack Smit, spokesman for WA's Project SafeCom Inc, said: "I'm
delighted that it's burning and I hope it burns right to the ground.

"Baxter is a detention centre, and more than all other detention centres
around Australia, it makes a mockery of the UN Refugee Convention, the
International Convention for the Rights of the Child, and other
international conventions Australia has signed.
"Baxter is designed as a Howard government fortress and as a maximum
security prison, and it inflicts permanent damage to the psyche of children
as well as adults."

Canberra Refugee Action Committee spokesman Phil Griffiths said the fires
were inevitable, given the long periods of detention asylum seekers were
subject to while their claims were processed.

"I would be more surprised and concerned if detainees did not respond to
such a situation," he said.

Carlee Rundell-Gordon, a nurse and visitor to the Baxter detention centre
from NSW, said the fires also highlighted the need for better emergency
procedures.

She claimed that on a recent visit to Baxter she noticed an emergency exit
door was bolted shut.

"There has never been a fire drill at the Baxter centre," she said.

"There is no sprinkler system inside Baxter and there is a concerning lack
of emergency exits in various locations inside the centre."

Qualifications:

Born and raised in NYC. Was a full-time, original occupant in
Battery Park City (across the street from WTC) for about three years, kept
part-time digs there until the early 90's. I was married on the roof of 1
WTC, and my new bride managed to barf all over it when the building swayed in
the wind unexpectedly (for her - I was quite used to it).

Background discussion:

I remember the early still-birth of WTC, and I remember it's
"completion" (a non-thing if ever there was one). I vividly remember the
pain that WTC brought to NYC with it's collossal footprint and complete
disregard for everything that was not WTC. I remember the WTC
"community" [Battery Park City] being born: White Flight and Nothing Else.

WTC was, in spite of it's disregard for everything non-WTC, still a
very New York kind of place. It's core was the Art of Stark
Efficiency. From the design of the towers themselves to the layout of the
cities beneath them, the place just screamed efficiency. No corner was
unnecessarily adorned when the "beauty of efficient use" could make a
statement on it's own behalf. Efficiency was *everywhere*: Path trains
terminating New Jersey commuter runs in the basement; local (to WTC) police
departments; food concourse layout which maximized retail space while
minimizing walking to it; elevators which were sorted and laid out for best
use of resources; interconnections of *everything* in a maze of tunneling
that not even a drunk could get truly lost in... Obviously, a city so
hell-bent on maximum-use and unadorned sterile efficiency would be offended
by many of the proposed rebuilds. I know I am.

Individual Projects:

Project:Foster And Partners - The Weird Crystalline Cathedral Thing
Assessment: Complete Loser

From the very first moment in their slide show, you just *know* these
guys are not from New York. Remember, on 9/11/2001, the very day of the
actual collapse, every single New Yorker I know was already cracking jokes
about the now defunct towers. This is not a city filled with a lot of tear
jerking philosophical moments where the band strikes up a warm melody for you
to cry over. This is the Efficiency Capitol Of The Universe, where dead
towers need to be cleared out, NOW GODDAMNIT, because they are BLOCKING
TRAFFIC.

They start out with this big, well, *huge* dreary memorial that
nobody in the city of New York is going to give a rats ass about (of course,
the politicians will just love it all to hell and back). I'll even go as far
as to predict that within five years of it's opening that memorial would
specialize in muggings and rapes after 6:00pm.

As we move on into our preview, we find this really strange
growing-thing overlooking what seems to me to be a cheap imitation of the
Vietnam Wall. The building itself is just *awful*: a kind of cross between a
strand of DNA trying to grow into something useful, and an echo of the now
DEAD towers trying to reassert their existence. Neither works. The original
towers are dead - let it go. The Crystalline Catherdral begs us to make
penance to it - to somehow go and seek it out for some kind of worship to the
past. Again, neither of these work. New Yorkers are not likely to give a
rats ass. In summation, the building itself has an intolerable ego, and the
"memorial" is disgusting in it's pompous disregard for the facts of life in
the city it is supposed to be *living* in.

Project:SOM, SANAA, et al. - The Vertical City
Assessment: Please take this project to Los Angelos, where it belongs.

First, allow me to give credit where credit is really due here. This
team has actually managed to capture what the WTC ended up becoming, although
not what it was originally envisioned as being. That said, this project is,
unfortunately, still a complete loss - may it rest in peace, FOREVER.

Starting in slide 3 we get what this team is all about, with the
quotation "The city, as one finds it in history, is the point of maximum
concentration for the power and culture of a community". And they'll be
Goddamned if They are going to have to SHARE it with anyone outside of the

Corporate personhood has utterly no basis in law...SHIT!

2002-12-29 Thread Matthew X
Whats going to happen to P & I Youth Inc?
A Review of Thom Hartmann's
Unequal Protection: the Rise of Corporate Dominance and the Theft of Human
Rights
by Richard W. Behan
Unequal Protection may prove to be the most significant book in the history
of corporate personhood, a doctrine which dates to 1886. For 116 years,
corporate personhood has been scrutinized and criticized, but never
seriously threatened. Now Thom Hartmann has discovered a fatal legal flaw
in its origin: corporate personhood is doomed.
What is “corporate personhood?” Suppose, to keep Wal-Mart at bay, your
county commissioners enact an ordinance prohibiting Wal-Mart from doing
business in your county. The subsequent (and immediate) lawsuit would be a
slam-dunk for Wal-Mart’s lawyers, because this corporation enjoys—just as
you and I do as living, breathing citizens—the Constitutional rights of
“due process” and “equal protection.” Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. is a person,
not in fact, not in flesh, not in any tangible form, but in law.
To their everlasting glory, this is not what the Founding Fathers intended,
as Mr. Hartmann explains in rich and engaging detail. And for 100 years
after the Constitution was ratified, various governmental entities led
corporations around on leashes, like obedient puppies, canceling their
charters promptly if they compromised the public good in any way. The
leashes broke in 1886, the puppies got away, and the public good was
increasingly compromised—until it was finally displaced altogether.
Today, the First Amendment protects the right of corporations-as-persons to
finance political campaigns and to employ lobbyists, who then specify and
redeem the incurred obligations. Democracy has been transformed into a
crypto-plutocracy, and public policy is no longer crafted to serve the
American people at large. It is shaped instead to maintain, protect,
enhance or create opportunities for corporate profit.
One recent example took place after Mr. Hartmann’s book was written.
Senators Patty Murray from Washington and Ted Stevens from Alaska inserted
a last-minute provision in this year’s defense appropriation bill. It
directed the Air Force to lease, for ten years, one hundred Boeing 767
airplanes, built and configured as passenger liners, to serve as aerial
refueling tankers. Including the costs of removing the seats and installing
the tanks, and then reversing the process ten years from now, the program
will cost $17 billion. The Air Force never asked for these planes, and they
weren’t in President Bush’s budget for the Defense Department. Political
contributions from the Boeing company totaled $640,000 in the 2000 election
cycle, including $20,230 for Senator Murray and $31,100 for Senator Stevens.
The chairman of the CSX Corporation, Mr. John Snow, has been nominated by
President Bush to be the new Secretary of the Treasury. Mr. Snow’s company,
another legal person, exercised its Constitutional rights by contributing
$5.9 million to various campaigns—three-quarters of it to Republicans—over
seven election cycles. It was a wise investment. In 3 of the last 4 years,
averaging $250 million in annual profits, CSX paid no federal income taxes
at all. Instead, it received $164 million in tax rebates—money paid to the
company by the Treasury Department.
No, this is not what the Founding Fathers intended democracy to be. Thomas
Jefferson and James Madison, as Mr. Hartmann details, were seriously
anxious about “moneyed corporations” and their potential interference in
public affairs. The Bill of Rights these two men drafted contained the ten
Constitutional amendments that survive, and two more that did not: one was
to control corporate expansion and dominance. (The other was to prohibit a
standing army.)
As the 19th century wore on American corporations entered lawsuit after
lawsuit to achieve a strategic objective: corporate personhood. With that,
they could break the leashes of social control and regulation. They could
sue county commissioners. Or lease their unsold airliners to the Air Force.
Or collect millions in tax rebates.
In his spellbinding Chapter 6—“The Deciding Moment”—Mr. Hartmann tells how
corporate personhood was achieved.
Orthodoxy has it the Supreme Court decided in 1886, in a case called Santa
Clara County v. the Southern Pacific Railroad, that corporations were
indeed legal persons. I express that view myself, in a recent book. So do
many others. So do many law schools. We are all wrong.
Mr. Hartmann undertook instead a conscientious search. He finally found the
contemporary casebook, published in 1886, blew the dust away, and read
Santa Clara County in the original, so to speak. Nowhere in the formal,
written decision of the Court did he find corporate personhood mentioned.
Not a word. The Supreme Court did NOT establish corporate personhood in
Santa Clara County.
In the casebook “headnote,” however, Mr. Hartmann read this statement: “The
defendant Co

The PA is certainly one of the more lecherous groups in these parts, including the
mob. They were supposed to dissappear after the tolls paid for roads and bridges to be
built. But using that ole' loophole (something to do with refinancing), they've
maintained their incpometant and corrupt stranglehold on most of our major
thoroughfares for lo these many years (increasing the pollution like crazy, too).

"I wasn't sorry to see those Bauhaus boxes go."

Bauhaus? I guess. More like that 70s warmed over post-Bauhaus fascist crapola. Nobody
in NYC really thought they were beautiful, but we do miss 'em (see above!).

And Peter Trei wrote...

"One thing I liked in particular was that most of the designs

high is an expression of confidence."

This I more or less agree with. And it's not a government thing, not a business thing,
just a New York thing. We need replacement towers for sure, and that design by David
Rockwell & Co (with those odd empty tower-structures) might be good. They have the
additional advantage of not casting such a dark shadow over downtown and Brooklyn
Heights.

That original twisty-towers design brought forward in response to how shitty the
original official designs were by that Amalgamated Architects was the best design, but
for some reason it didn't make it into the official final round.

"One hopes not a single fucking dime of taxpayer money will go into rebuilding

Like I said, you can either SEE your tax dollars build something (even if its
useless), or else they'll just dissappear up some buereucrats (I can never spell that

NewAge Symbology (With Image)

2002-12-29 Thread wguerin

As has been presented to me, the following is an instruction set to generate
the graphical representation of the New Age symbology. (Forthcoming
Documentation)

The flat rendition is represented by convergent open crescents merging into a
single transcendual point passing through three 3d interlocking rings (as 2d
side view bands).

The symbol is luminescent gold in color and the background of this symbol is an
iridescent purple approximating 24bRGB:200x100x200 (of 255) or [RGB%:(100%x50%
x100%) with Lux=(2/3)].

This symbol is most easily drawn on a 2d grid of 30x by 20y units, with
numerical origin the bottom left.

The following is a listing of arcs used in this representation, and below is an
instruction set for manual drawing of this symbol.

If drawn by hand, the following guides are suggested:

(Attached example image)

1: Background:
- Plane of 30 units wide and 20 high. (0,0 to 30x20)

2: Convergent Crescents: (Guides)
- Circles of radius 4.0

around Z axis)
- Circles of radius 1.0
-- Centered: 11,14 (Leftmost Horizontal Ring)
-- Centered: 17,14 (Rightmost Horizontal Ring)
-- Arcs of radius 4.0 from 14,14 intersecting circles of radius 2.0 from above
center points. (Guide for 4 additional circles of radius 1.0)
-- Centered: [four circles at above intersection points.] (Each end of flat
rotated torus)
- Lines connecting outer diameter of each corresponding pair of above circles.

Except for the lines formed representing each ring, all edge boundaries are non-
intersecting of others and persist between each intersecting point.

4: Completion of Primary Symbol:
(Note: Primary will never be shown without Rings completed.)
Using the above guides, finalize the following:
- Two lines radiating from point at 14,18
- major length of two circles intersecting the endpoints of these lines until
intersection with edge of circles (r=1.0 centered: x=6 and x=22)
- convex length of these circles r=1.0 at x=6 and x=22 until intersection with
two circles (centered 8,8 and 20,8 r=3.0)
- major length of these circles until edge intersection with circle centered at
14,0
- minor length of circle centered at 14,0

5: Completion of Rings:
(Note: Primary will never be shown without Rings completed.)
- Lines connecting outer diameter of corresponding circles in parallel
- convex length of these circles between line endpoints
Note: center point of all three oblong rings is at 14,14; these represent the 3
interlocking torus rings of the 3d representation.

6: Entity Indicator:
The Entity Indicator is voluntarily used and is typically text (or limited
design) along the rightmost edge of the field, of any coloration desired upon
standard background, aligned vertically in the area bound by x=28 and x=30
(outer edge, without intersection) with all text read from y=0 upward.

7: Entity Logo or Seal:
The Entity Seal location is also voluntary, but must be of the entity or
organization in (6). Placement of any logo in this location indicates
comprehensive support of New Age engagements and is positioned in a symbolic
location relative to the Primary Symbol.
- if round, Centered at 14,2 and of maximal radius 2.0
- other shapes: centered along x=14 below y=4 and NOT intersecting the Primary
Symbol.
- All designs must be between bounds x=10 and x=18 and lower edge of Primary
Symbol without intersection, aligned to be viewed y=0 the lower edge.

8: Other Locations:
No other location on this field is to be used for any design other than with
the formal authority of the New Age; all remaining areas are reserved for
specific indicators to be announced upon utilization.
Note that this is a flat rendition of a 3d openspace object.

9: Flat Rendition Display Practices:
- Mounted flat with point upward (or right-facing when against backdrop of
speaker), never non-horizontal unless only one side is visible and used to
represent the Entity within their environment.
- Hung or draped as a flag, with x=0 as the connection point to mounting
apparatus, connected to vertical mount allowing horizontal display if flat.
- Edge decorations are desirable when used as a flag, standard gold tassel is
recommended if no Entity is identified, or Entity-specific coloration and
material/designs/objects unobtrusive or distracting from the Primary Symbol are
desirable.

What Coase's railroad example neglects to count, of course,
is that social cost to the farmer of paying the railroad not to pollute
may be higher or lower than the social cost to the farmer of
disposing of large rocks or excess dynamite, which is somewhat different
from the costs to the railroad of dealing with large rocks or dynamited tracks.

In the US Western Plains, there's also the likelihood that the farmer
depends on the railroad for making the farm economical,
so it may still be cheaper to have the 10% of the farm nearest the railroad
not be economically productive due to pollution while the other 90%
is able to get a much lower price for shipping goods to market,
so perhaps the Coasian costs still apply for that situation,
especially if the farmer got the land from the railroad in the first place,
which was not uncommon when the US did big land giveaways to railroads.

"Square footage mandated"?

"Told the companies"?

It sure would be great if things were just left this way:

"It is up to the owner of the property to decide what to do with the
property. He can ask for opinions, hire consultants, of course, as he
wishes. But the herd has no say on what he does, so long as uniform
building standards and zoning regulations are met."

(Issues of zoning, safety, and traffic are easily dealt with, and have
nothing to do with the various pronouncements about "more square
footage must be provided" and "The Mayor prefers at least two towers.")

Regrettably, many levels of government and "the public" are involved.

I realize that things got very confusing when a quasi-government agency
(Port Authority) bought and paid for the original towers--though it
then leased the site and towers to another owner, a private individual.
If they wanted to own their building, they should not have then leased
it to another, then back to themselves, while diverting the monies in
the usual government way.

So now we have what should be a private land development deal mixed up
with government...again.

My hunch is that the new towers will never be filled and will turn out
to be a business catastrophe (oops, I said "business," when in fact it
is the Port Authority, a weird melange of jurisdictions which is
probably constitutionally invalid). Many of the occupants have found
other office spaces, and many of them have said they are perfectly
happy uptown or midtown. Or out in Jersey or Long Island or the other
burrows (ObMisspellingDeliberate).

Or decentralized out to where people are cheaper to hire. This is what
networks are for. Centralizing people into antheap buildings...ugh.

I wasn't sorry to see those Bauhaus boxes go.

One thing I liked in particular was that most of the designs
weren't afraid to go high into the sky this time around. Building
high is an expression of confidence.

Or, to many of us, of stupidity.

The WTC was a landmark
for a huge part of the city; you could see it easily from most
of midtown and downtown.

Hideous boxes.

I worry about designs which require a huge amount of maintenance
(Libeskind's sky forests), which I can't see being maintained more
than a decade or so, or which devote so much to memorial that
40 years from now they will seem over the top (Foster has a huge
area which is supposed to be restricted to victim's family members).

My own initiial idea was to rebuild the towers as they were, but in
goldtone instead of silver. Now, I'd like to be a little more
respectful
of the pre-WTC street grid (If you weren't actually going to the WTC,
it was a huge obstacle to get around, either driving or on foot). But I
still want towers which rise far above the skyline.

One hopes not a single fucking dime of taxpayer money will go into
rebuilding anything on that site. (Oh, I won't scream if $25,000 is
allocated to hire that Chinese architect to replicate her Vietcong wall
with the names of the dead so that the weepy ones can do their tracings
and all. But nothing more should be spent out of the taxpayer's pocket.)

(And to the extent the Port Authority is really a shakedown operation,
a gatekeeper, extracting revenues from those who cross into its regime,
the use of Port Authority money should be watched carefully. The
insurance should cover the rebuilding. If it doesn't, scale back the
plans accordingly.)

I like the new skyline better. (ObHettinga: Meet the new skyline, same
as the old, old one.)

But all this yawp coming out of NYC about which of the plans will be
selected, how the City wants the towers to be reconstructed, blah blah,
is all just an indication of statism.

(Ayn Rand loved the Twin Towers, ironically, and typically, and
disgustingly. But, then, she thought cigarette smoking was a symbolic
affirmation of Man's control of fire and his striving to reify A or
Not-A through purity of essence! But, then, she was aynal about a lot
of things, such as her support for NASA even though it consumed 50,000
slave-lives to put an American flag on a ball of worthless rock.
Hilarious that she died of cancer.)

My qualifications: I lived in NYC when I was a little kid, and in
Manhattan from the end of college until I moved to Massachusetts
14 years ago. I used to work at 101 Barclay Street, directly across
the street from 7 WTC. I've been up the towers many times - I used
to take friends from out of town up to the observatory, and dates to
Windows on the World. I'd visit the concourse for lunch, and hang
out at a bar halfway up the north tower after work.

What do I think? I think they're one hell of a lot better than the
first batch, which came out last summer. They lowered the
square footage mandated, and told the companies to be a lot
more imaginative.

I like the Foster design best. The SOM, Libeskind, and United
Architects designs are also very good. The THINK and Peterson
designs leave me kind of cold. I don't much like the Richard Meier
(tictactoe) design.

I worry about designs which require a huge amount of maintenance

If you join as IAssociate Director before December 31st,
you earn without having to recruit... but after December 31st there is a
new criteria to be met to qualify for checks! It still won't be difficult
to earn, but at the moment, it's the easiest it could ever be!
Want to earn $12,500 in 6 cycles? Doing nothing? Join now!

Now, if you are working on another business, you may be looking
for some hot leads - not more than 24-48 hours old. And they are
never re-sold!

You join this company as a distributor for just $10!
Yes, $10 is what I said!

Then you purchase your leads at a discounted price from your
own business, but more importantly, you earn commissions from
other peoples purchases - and everybody is buying leads - at
least all those who are looking to building their Network businesses!
Imagine the potential when you think of how many people out there
are looking for new, fresh leads ALL the time!

To enroll, it is absolutely free.
Go to:
Go into the Opportunity tab...scroll down to "become a
distributor now" button and after you agree to the Terms
of Agreement simply fill out the form.
The first box is the referrers name - type in Tom Fitzsimmons

That is it! You will receive your ID and then you pay $10 and you are in!
Check it out! An opportunity such as this should not be missed!

In fact, many are purchasing leads from RCN and building
their GMT business and earning from both! You can earn $12,500 as
an iAssociate Director with GMT doing no recruiting or selling etc,
but if you choose to do some promoting, you earn bonuses on top of
the $12,500! So using RCN leads, one business helps the other
 - its a Win - Win situation again! You never have to go hunting
for leads again!

If you have questions, please write to me
quickly! But please, do not miss these two fantastic income
earning potentials.

Yes, this is presumably why 20/20 included the
item in the show, as well as the NSA buzzword.

The young FBI snitch was bouncing with glee at
being on national TV -- after leaving the FBI
he's studying to be a media-eroticized lawyer.

Better to highlight sexual proclivities of
enemies of the state, domestic or global, than
investigate and disclose why they succeed in violating piss-poor national
security --
or so the 20/20s market.

Sexual scandal trumps all, but isn't this the
West Coast marketing image shallowness against
East Coast faux Euro-depth. Euros and their
faux deep thinkers love the western for its
bountiful romantic escapism from subtlety.

Horses, guns, right and wrong, winners and
losers, the USA v. the World. Simple-minded
erotic pleasures, silliness writ larger than
the wee woeful penis. Hanssen is us, or at
least those who harbor dreams of conquest.

Make $167,000 a year as a Day Trader

2002-12-29 Thread angiestars
It was the Spring of 1979.

I was just a tall, goofy looking kid in middle school
with buck-teeth and freckles. Each day in the
cafeteria, I walked from table to table ...

Stealing other kids' lunch money.

No, I didn't rob them with a gun or a knife - I just made
them a little deal. "Let me borrow two dollars today," I said,
"and I'll bring you five dollars next week." The investment
was too good to pass up, and other kids were throwing their
lunch money at me like gravy on mashed potatoes. Of course
when "next week" rolled around and I couldn't pony up the cash,
I promised to pay them even more the week after that,
if they would just let me keep their investment a little bit
longer.

Eventually the end of the year came and went, high school
started and with it came girls, and homework, and parties,
and sports, and those poor kids from eighth grade had more
things on their mind than last year's lunch money.

I made off with a tidy sum for a middle school kid,
and I didn't even get beat up.

Hidden inside this story are the two greatest stock market
secrets you will ever learn.

First of all, greed is your number one enemy. You're not
going to turn $2 into $5 in a week, so cash out when
you're ahead. Don't wait for the boat to sink before
grabbing the lifejacket.

Second, never trust an investment adviser of any kind.
They are looking out for their own money, not yours.

The "professionals", those stuffy investment counselors and
money managers, will always tell you that the best time to
buy is NOW. According to those guys, the longer you keep
your money in the market, the more money you're going to make.
Ask them when is the best time to sell and their answer is
"NEVER".

In a sense, they are right. If you put $250,000 in an index
fund right now, you'll probably have over a million dollars
in thirty or forty years. But here's the problem:

Do you want to WAIT thirty or forty years to be rich?

Hell no!

You want the money NOW - so you can enjoy it. It's hard to
make use of your fortune when you're seventy years old
in a wheelchair. If you could make a million dollars in
the next few years, what would you do with it? Where would
you travel? What kind of car would you buy?

The fact is ... youth is the best time to be rich.

If your goal is to make quick profits in the market, volatility
is your ally, and stability your enemy. You want to see
those large upswings, two hundred points in a day, followed
by the four hundred point crash a week later. You don't
care if the market went up or down 20% this year as long
it was UNSTABLE. That's how you're going to make the
money.

What I'm talking about here is day trading.

My father invests the traditional way; he holds some good stocks
and he goes up 30K and down 30K. In the long term of 5-10 years
he makes money.

The day trader buys or sells 5,000 shares of XYZ for a
$25,000 profit in a 5-10 minute trade. He acts quickly, taking
advantage of all the information at his disposal about a
certain stock, and estimating whether it will go up or
down within hours, sometimes within minutes.

I can teach you how to do this - and how to make amazing
amounts of money at it. It's not rocket science, and you
only need to learn a few basic principles to get started.

Society would have you believe that successful trading is
complicated and requires formal training.

The truth is, wealthy people use very simple investment
strategies to make money.

Popular media and investment professionals portray successful
trading as difficult and complex to scare you out of the boxing
ring. They don't want the competetion - and they sure as hell
don't want you paying a few dollars to an online trading firm
to execute a trade for which they'd charge you forty or fifty
dollars.

They make their money only if you believe two lies:

1) That investing is too difficult and risky for the average
person.

2) That using an investment adviser who charges a high
commission is safer than trading online for a few bucks
per trade.

Here is what the financial gurus in today's society absolutely,
positively DO NOT WANT YOU TO KNOW ...

The strategies for profitable day trading are in fact
so simple that anyone can do it - provided they spend
a few hours of studying.

After reading over 200 financial books and publications
during the past decade, and after using day trading
to successfully make more than four million dollars in
the stock market, I've learned the following lessons:

** Achieving financial success is incredibly simple.

** Anyone can do it.

** It only takes a few hours to learn.

When I discovered the secret to day trading, I didn't become
wealthy overnight. If you want instant cash, drive to Wal-mart.
Buy a ski mask and a shotgun, and rob your local bank. The
only way to get rich, quick or otherwise, is through
hard work, knowledge, and determination.

After learning the fundamentals of day trading, I started
p
