[darktable-dev] Colour Equalizer
Hi Devs, First up, fantastic work on 4.8! I raised the issue last week about documentation, and have come here to ask who wrote the code for the CE module? If that person would be willing to engage in a discussion, I'd really like to cover (in a future video) all of the controls within the module. I'd rather learn from the person who developed it, than try and assume what the controls are doing, and then lead my viewers up the proverbial garden path with incorrect information! [darktable-dev] Modules in the scene-referred preset
Hi devs, If I'm barking up the wrong tree, please set me straight! :) I was just looking at the modules in the "workflow: scene-referred" preset, and there are a bunch of modules which, when you hover over them, are described by the tooltip as having a DISPLAY-referred input. Notably, they are: local contrast color zones astrophoto denoise watermark framing vignetting grain Is this deliberate? Should they be removed from that preset? If not, can someone point out the reasoning, just so I understand it, please? :) Many thanks! Fwd: [darktable-dev] Delete files on memory card
First up, this is a question more for the darktable-user list, not the dev list. But now that we're here... No, dt does not offer the ability to remove files from the memory card. And conventional wisdom says you really shouldn't wipe your memory card with your computer either. Ideally, you would wipe it from your camera. Also, it's not a good idea to ever partially wipe a card (not sure if you were doing that or not) either, as that leaves a fragmented storage unit which will mean at some point, your camera is having to split an image up across multiple areas of the card. -- Forwarded message - From: Łukasz Karcz Date: Wed, 19 July 2023, 05:05 Subject: [darktable-dev] Delete files on memory card To: darktable Hello everyone, I have a [noob] question regarding importing the images from the memory card. Fwd: [darktable-dev] release 4.2 is coming...
Agreed! Thank you to all the devs who devote their time and energy to this project. It is greatly appreciated. -- Forwarded message - From: Pascal Obry Date: Thu, 15 Dec 2022, 07:06 Subject: [darktable-dev] release 4.2 is coming... To: darktable-user , darktable-dev < darktable-dev@lists.darktable.org> Hello! I'd like to take some time, while we are all waiting for the 4.2 release, to send you a little message about darktable. This release cycle has seen lot of improvements as previous releases. We had also some divergences with one developer and the signal sent was certainly not good or worrisome for some of you. Fact is that the team behind darktable is strong and working very hard in many aspects of the project. Some people gain more visibility because they work on GUI part that are directly visible by end-users. But there is also some people working on part of the code that you do not see directly but that makes darktable internal better. I'd like to thank Hanno Schwalm and Ralf Brown for their work on performances, tweaking OpenCL code path and OpenMP to use every cycles of your CPU. I'd like to thank Hanno Schwalm also for working on new highlight recovery algorithms. I'd like to thank Diederik ter Rahe for looking into Gtk issues and proposing a very impressive framework for shortcuts. And to achieve that, lot of code refactoring has been done. Some Gtk parts are looking like black magic to me :) I'd like to thank Roman Lebedev for the hard work in rawspeed. Without this project darktable won't be there. Also Miloš Komarčević working on rawspeed and many RAW formats support. I'd like to thank Victor Forsiuk for working on image input/output support and fixing a huge number of spelling typos. I'd like to thank Aldric Renaudin for the continued effort on the lighttable filters and UI. I'd like to thank Nicolas Auffray for taking over the UI effort and doing magic with CSS. I'd like to thank Bill Fergusson for maintaining the Lua framework. I'd like to thank rawfiner for checking noise profiles and making sure they are in good shape for integration. I'd like to thank Simone Gotti for working on a new lens correction method based on meta-data. I'd like to thank all the testers and reviewers (Chris Elston, Martin Straeten, parafin, Mark-64, and others) making sure we do not introduce more issues than we are fixing. Also thanks for Chris for reading my English in the RELEASE_NOTES and correcting it. I'd like to thank parafin and Bill Fergusson for creating the release binaries for MacOS and Windows. And Andreas Schneider as maintainer of the OBS platform for creating the GNU/Linux binaries. I'd like to thank Sakari Kapanen for helping with color science. I'd like to thank Jakob Andrén for the long journey at making Sigmoid a viable alternative to FilmicRGB. I'd like to thank all the translators bringing to us an interface in our native language. I won't name them, but also remember that darktable is Open Source and we leverage on many other Open Source projects/libraries (to handle Jpeg, TIFF, AVIF, HEIF, PNG... tether with camera, handle SVG, colors...). I'm even pretty sure that there is far more code in the dependencies we are using than in darktable itself. And finally I'd like to thank all people that I have forgotten in the list above. I'm sorry if I missed you. A darktable release is a huge amount of work and the darktable team is wonderful. I'm really happy to be part of it, let's the aventure continue. Hi all, Just perusing the release notes for 4.0.0, and under the sub-heading "UI rewrite", I se the following: New collapsible sections have been added to avoid cluttering the UI in the following modules: - channel mixer rgb - exposure - color calibration Now, I've searched the module preset manager, and I cannot see (nor have I ever heard of) a "channel mixer RGB" module. Is this a typo which was meant to refer to the Colour Calibration Module (I'm guessing not, as CC is mentioned third in the list), or something else? The new module allows you to see thumbnails of your images before import and makes it easier to handle multiple import tasks. The same dialog is now used for importing from disk, card or camera. When importing "in-place", images that are already present in darktable are flagged and can be automatically excluded from the import. Importing from a local drive won't use gphoto and so should work more reliably on Windows. - A vector-scope is added to complement the current histogram, waveform and parade views. - A new default demosaic algorithm (RCD) has been introduced, which should provide better quality than the current default (PPG) without the long run- times of AMaZE. the order of the demosaic algorithms has also been adjusted for clarity. - Support for "dual demosaic" has also been added, allowing you to combine "RCD + VNG4" and "AMaZE + VNG4" for bayer sensors, for xtrans sensors there is "Markesteijn 3-pass + VNG". This allows you to use an algorithm better resolving fine detail and another one delivering smoother output depending on local image content. - You can now create an opacity mask based on the sharpness of the image. This uses a similar algorithm to that used in dual demosaic. - Drawn shapes are drawn on the original RAW image and then distorted through the pixelpipe. This previously led to, for example, circles becoming ellipses (due to lens distortion) after being placed on the image. All drawn shapes can now be pre-visualized and moved prior to placement, with full deformation applied. This makes the editing of masks easier fully WYSIWYG. - A new Color Balance RGB module has been added. This can be used as a one stop module for all color grading work. - A new censorize module has been added. This allows you to hide parts of the image by adding a blur/pixelization. - A new crop module has been added. This new module has been added late in the pixelpipe and makes it possible to use cropped parts of the image for source spots in the retouch module, for example. - A new section has been added to the color calibration module to allow you to calibrate colors using a color checker chart. - The map module has been enhanced in a number of ways: - When importing a GPX the trace can be displayed. - Location can be set using polygons and directly created from information reported by Open Street Map. As a reminder, all locations create tags automatically for images placed into the area. - The basic adjustments module has been replaced with the quick access panel, which can be used to group controls from multiple different modules in one place. Currently, only non-graphical controls (sliders, comboboxes etc.) can be used. ## Other New Features And Changes - The various lighttable modes can now be accessed via clear and descriptive icons at the bottom of the screen. These should be easier to use than the existing drop-down selection. - The export module is now also accessible on the left-hand panel of the

[darktable-dev] FR: New presets of visible modules
Hi all, Following my "Newbies introduction to darktable" video, the discussion came up about linear modules vs LAB modules. And I thought it would make sense to have a couple of extra presets in the More Modules hamburger menu. Namely, "Subset: LInear modules" and "Subset: LAB modules" options. Thoughts? Would these be valid entries to add? Or would they simply sow the seeds of more confusion? Fwd: [darktable-dev] idea to consider
"Yet people love them because marketing expenses make up for dev mediocrity and overall stupidity." It's like VHS v Betacam or Windoze v Linux all over again! Cheers, Bruce Williams. -- Forwarded message - From: Aurélien Pierre Date: Mon, 31 Aug 2020, 09:09 Subject: Re: [darktable-dev] idea to consider To: 1. that still doesn't give you the jpeg cooking recipe, which is more complicated than building an ad-hoc LUT or a tonecurve if local filters are applied (and there are), 2. what is it with people editing jpegs ? That's nonsensical ! Not the same workflow, not the same maths, not the same filters, not the same pipeline, not the same software. A raw is an output-agnostic linearly encoded master picture that you can still salvage from the beginning, a jpeg is already non-linearly cooked for display assuming dim viewing conditions (as per sRGB standard) and firmware blackboxes. People need to stop dealing with image processing as if everyone was right and correctness didn't matter. It's not a silly magic game of pixels values, there are assumptions to assert underneath the hood. Sometimes I wish image processing could kill people, as civil engineering or medicine do, so people would start taking it seriously and check the theory behind before doing shit carelessly. That kind of silly workflow will blow up in your face 50 % of times because there is zero reliability in handling pre-baked jpegs with all the firmwares discrepancies in a software designed to unroll image operations on raw files. Then I will let you deal with users who don't understand why the workflow is so unpredictable. Indulging bad habits of users is not a solution, especially since we don't sell anything/whore ourselves out. Let's be rigorous about pixels operations and do things properly. Want to edit jpegs ? Use bloody Photoshop and the likes. They are good at doing shit, don't care about color consistency, don't care about light emissions, don't even do associated alpha occlusion properly. Yet people love them because marketing expenses make up for dev mediocrity and overall stupidity. Le 30/08/2020 à 17:05, Jason Polak a écrit : Another possibility is shooting Raw+JPEG. Hi all, Just looking at build 2483 and reading the release notes for 3.2 in preparation for putting a video together. I know you'd prefer bugs and feature requests to go through github, but I just don't understand the process that well. And this isn't really a BUG per se, more an annoyance. Here's a screen capture of what happens when you try to click on a searched tag from the collections module, when that tag is the final tag in the list http://www.audio2u.com/images/darktable/cramped.png What happens is this bizarre horizontal scroll bar appears across the bottom of the module, and robs you of 50% of the screen real estate to actually click on that tag item. This will add one more icon so reduce space size on the line. And with some languages like french who use some longer words, space used is space less for image. I would also add that favorite icon is mostly used one time to set all favorites and most of the time is not more use, and only after first set when a new module or some change appear on user workflow. Unfortunately it looks like that doesn't do what I'm looking for. Edits made on one computer don't show up on the other computer (I think it's because they are only sharing the photo files, not the library database). Here's what I tried: Mount remote disk over sshfs. Select images. -> Make local copy. Edit image. "Resync local copies" When I open darktable on the other computer, those edits are nowhere to be seen, even if I request to "resync local copies." Does it matter how I have the remote directory mounted (using sshfs)? Is darktable attempting to detect whether storage is remote (NFS or SAMBA)? I have a couple follow-up questions: 1) Why go to the trouble of adding hostname to PID in the lock file, why not just check for existence of the lock file and treat that as evidence that the database is open? It looks like many lines of code have been written in database.c dedicated to finding an excuse to ignore the lock file :-) (by checking for a running process, etc). 2) Since sharing the library is not recommended, is there a recommended way to have one computer be aware of edits made on/by another computer? The problem I'm trying to solve is: my photos live on my laptop and are usually imported and edited there. For large jobs, I would like to be able to do processing on my desktop, which has a GPU. My current solution is to mount my laptop harddrive on the desktop via sshfs and point both darktable instances to a library file in the shared folder. 3) Is there any risk to the database in doing this, provided I avoid having multiple darktable instances accessing the database at once? This has always been the default behavior. That it will use "overwrite" one time only and then revert to "create unique filenames". Fwd: Fwd: [darktable-dev] Standardization of the writing of mouse interactions in the user manual
Pierre, First up, my sincerest apologies! I did not realize that that was YOUR sentence. I thought it was something you had found on the page you had linked to. I would not have been so brutal had I understood. Sorry! :) And yes, you are correct. Our previous discussions were more about the ratifying of how to document key combinations, but we had not discussed mouse intersections as well. You said: *IMHO it should be considered to completely eliminate the spelling of mouse* *interactions in combination with keys like Ctrl+move, Ctrl+scoll orCtrl+right click in the manual and to express this in sentences instead* *(see example sentence).* Hmmm, not sure I agree on this point. I think for consistency's sake, the idea of a group of commands looking like this *Ctrl+A* *Shift+L* *Ctrl+(right click)* *Alt+(scroll wheel)* makes more sense than *Ctrl+A* *Shift+L* *press/hold the Ctrl key and right click* press/hold the Alt key and scroll the mouse wheel This is just my view. But I'm happy to go with whatever concensus is agreed upon by the group. Cheers, Bruce Williams. -- Forwarded message - From: openhab.doc Date: Fri., 27 Sep. 2019, 03:51 Subject: Re: Fwd: [darktable-dev] Standardization of the writing of mouse interactions in the user manual To: Hello Bruce, thank you for your quick answer and correction of my English sentence. As mentioned in the e-mail, I am not a native speaker. With regard to your question "But I think we've had this discussion already, didn't we?". In my opinion the key combinations like Ctrl+X were defined but not in combination with a mouse interaction. All this spelling right click, right-click and click right can be found in the user manual, this I would like to unify to one spelling. No matter on which spelling we agree, in combination with a key it looks strange. e.g. Ctrl+right click or Ctrl+(right click) Are there examples of how other manuals handle this? IMHO it should be considered to completely eliminate the spelling of mouse interactions in combination with keys like Ctrl+move, Ctrl+scoll or Ctrl+right click in the manual and to express this in sentences instead (see example sentence). Well, for a start, this "You can resize the height of attached view or dictionary view by while selected ctrl key and rotate the mouse wheel." is appalling English! The words 'by' and 'while' have absolutely no right being next to each other. It should read something like "You can resize the height of attached view or dictionary view by holding down the Ctrl key and rotating the mouse wheel." Just my thoughts. As for the rest of the terminology on the Microsoft page, I have no issue. But even that page does not specify a use-case for Ctrl+click. But I think we've had this discussion already, didn't we? For example, the following spellings can be found in the manual: Ctrl+click, Ctrl+clicking, right click, right-click and click right Ctrl+wheel, Ctrl+scroll The first step is to agree the writing style in the team. Instead, will it be helpful if I recorded videos showing what's new and how it works (possibly in a disorganized/non-linear order), and let you put the information in shape for a documentation ? Not that I want to give you the bad job, but I might be more useful on the debugging team, as the release approaches. I'm still happy to do proof-reading. Cheers, Aurélien. I will certainly do what I can. As yet, I have not delved into the world of github, pull requests, merges, and so forth. Nor compiling! People writing articles about the release (e.g. myself) have a hard time reverse-engineering the changes. Last year's release notes were better than the previous ones for me, but still much more work to understand than a proper user-manual. 3. Testers cannot really test without the manual. This is related to point 2: last year I reported a lot of bugs found while trying to understand how new features worked, but without the documentation one doesn't know what to test, nor what's the expected behavior. 4. People proof-reading the documentation, which can be the same as 2. For example, the manual doesn't seem to document the hierarchical tags shortcuts (control/shift double-click) in the collect module while they are documented in my article (https://www.darktable.org/2018/12/darktable-26/). I would happily report bugs for missing documentation, but when I do so I usually get "please be patient, we'll write the doc later" as an answer, so I don't report these bugs. To me, the ideal flow is to write at least a draft of the doc in the same PR as the code (which does help a lot with points 3. and 4. since testing is also important before merging), but having the manual ready before the release (e.g. not too long after the feature freeze or string freeze in your list above) would greatly help. > Thanks to all people involved in this release, it is amassing to see > the developer community to grow! Fwd: [darktable-dev] Naming Module Instances
But Pascal, when you rename a module instance in 2.6.2, you can't remove the original name of the module. You can only append something meaningful to the existing module name. I agree with the original request. The ability to replace the module's original name would be much more useful (and screen-real-estate friendly). Hi guys, I know posting images to the mailing list is frowned upon, so I've thrown this screenshot up in a temp directory on my site. And for some reason, I cannot log into redmine. I reset my password, and go to log in with the new password, and it tells me my password is wrong, even though I just changed it 2 seconds ago! I even had to reduce the scale to ensure it was not hanging off the right hand side of the image. Now, don't worry, I would never watermark an image like this. I was simply doing some prep for a forthcoming video. But something has clearly happened since 2.4, when this behaviour was NOT evident. Back then, the watermark would have been correctly centred. Thanks (to those responsible) for the updated manual! However, I do notice that the further you go through the manual, the more out of whack the page numbers are in relation to the table of contents. For example, the TOC says that section 9 starts on page 193, when it actual fact, it starts on page 201. Section 10 starts on page 213, not 205 as indicated by the TOC. Fwd: [darktable-dev] Pushing ISO (ISO invarience)
Same here. I did my own test, but going from 6400 ISO down to 200 ISO. I also used 2 exposure modules (1 @ +3, and 1 @ +2) and found the images to be almost indistinguishable from each other. If anything, the noise distribution was subtly different in it's randomisation. As for white balance differences, that should not be an issue if you're shooting RAW. A RAW file is not, after all, an "image". It's simply data. That's why white balance can be selected after the fact. And no, I don't believe there to be any issue with darktable either. Just noobie error on the part of f-stoppers. I just tried to replicate the essense of the test using my Nikon D3200, 50mm @ F5. Shot properly exposed at 3200 on a tripod, then at 100. After boosting the exposure 5 stops (1 exposure instance) and selecting the same white balance, the overall luminosity looks equivalent to me. I also tried boosting using 2 instances, 1 at +3ev and another at +2ev. I noticed that duplicating the instance and changing the exposure still leaves the duplicate turned off, so maybe that's what happened. The camera's white balance selection was very different between the two and even after setting the boosted image's setting it still looks a little yellow to me. Also, some areas that were darker to begin with (dark wood in shadow) did not appear as bright after boosting 5ev. The long & short of it is I don't think there's any issue with Darktable. --Bryan On 3/3/19 2:31 AM, Wiktor Nowak wrote: > Normally You use one exposure module and push it 3EV max. "But now I use only Fuji cameras, and for the RAW files (.RAF) from Fuji X-trans sensors, the Demosaic module has only two options: 'method' and 'colour smoothing'. There's no 'match greens'. And the 'method' pulldown does not have AMaZE. Rather, it has VNG, Markesteijn 1-pass (the default), Markesteijn 3-pass, passthrough (monochrome), and frequency domain chroma. This is the case in DT on both MacOS and Debian." He goes on to suggest that perhaps darktable reads the metadata from the raw file and only presents appropriate demosaic algorithms for that sensor type. Is that the case? Fwd: [darktable-dev] Updating the manual
Great explanation Ulrich! Thanks for that. Cheers, Bruce Williams. -- Forwarded message - From: Ulrich Pegelow Date: Thu., 15 Nov. 2018, 05:18 Subject: Re: [darktable-dev] Updating the manual To: Hi Bruce, you can consider the strength of the module's effect to be controlled by two gradients or ramps. One for the highlights and one for the shadows. The shadows gradient has its maximum value at L=0 and linearly goes down in the direction of the highlights. For the highlights gradient it's vice versa. The compression slider controls the steepness of the two gradients. With the default setting 50% both gradients reach a value of zero (= no effect) at L=50 - which means that only an ideal midtone is not affected by neither shadows nor highlights. At a compression value of 100% the gradients are practically vertical - only pure black and pure white are affected - a corner case which has virtually no effect on the image. At a compression value of 0% both gradients extend to the respective opposite side. The shadows adjustment strongly affect shadows, moderately affects midtones and minimally affects highlights. Vice versa for the highlights adjustment. [darktable-dev] Updating the manual
Hi all, Andreas suggested I should seek clarification on the compression slider, specifically in the "shadows and highlights" module. The manual doesn't explicitly state what ranges of shadow and highlight values are affected for given compression levels. In my latest video, I suggested that at 0, the shadows control would control all dark tones up to the mid point, and the highlights slider would control all tones from the mid-point up to the brightest/whitest pixel. Does a compression setting of 50 mean the shadows slider covers the left 25% of the histogram, and the highlights slider controls the right 25% of the histogram? [darktable-dev] Collect images module
Hey guys, I had a viewer ask me about the use of the semicolon when it comes to using the [Date] modifier in the Collect Images module. Section 2.3.2.1 of the manual contains the following paragraph: "Attributes with numerical values as well as date and time attributes can be used in combi- nation with comparative and range operators. Write <, <=, >, >=, <>, and = to select images with attributes less, less or equal, greater, greater or equal, not equal, or equal to the a given value, respectively. An expression in the form [from;to] selects a range of values." Which makes no reference to the semicolon as a modifier, at all. Yet, when you set the drop down menu to [Date], and mouse over the text field, the tooltip which pops up shows the semicolon as another modifier. Is this some left over code that needs to be removed? Or is there another use case here which is not documented in the manual? OK, I'll bite. What's a GMIC filter when it's at home? :) Cheers, Bruce Williams -- audio2u.com brucewilliamsphotography.com shuttersincpodcast.com sinelanguagepodcast.com e-mail | Twitter <http://twitter.com/@audio2u> | LinkedIn <http://au.linkedin.com/pub/bruce-williams/1/318/489> | Facebook <http://www.facebook.com/audio2u> | Soundcloud <http://www.soundcloud.com/audio2u> | Quora <https://www.quora.com/profile/Bruce-Williams-5> -- On Wed, Sep 5, 2018 at 3:50 PM Heiko Bauke wrote: > Hi, > > in the last few weeks I integrated a few GMIC filters into darktable to > play with. > > Integrating GMIC into darktabe was an idea that I had in mind for quite > some time. Re: [darktable-dev] darktable for Windows
This is awesome news! Although I'm a Linux guy these days, I am the producer and co-host of a photography podcast called Shutters Inc, and most of my listeners are on Windoze. I'll be giving this a shoutout on this week's podcast for sure! Although I've been raving about dt ever since I found it 12 months ago, I've only converted one listener (that I know of). This will probably see a few more at least sample the product, and I would expect, a few of them will stay. I know a lot of people are not happy about Adobe's continual price gouging for a CC subscription. :) Cheers, Bruce Williams -- Mobile: +61 41 250 6349 brucewilliamsphotography.com shuttersincpodcast.com sinelanguagepodcast.com audio2u.com e-mail <stu...@audio2u.com> | Twitter <http://twitter.com/@audio2u> | LinkedIn <http://au.linkedin.com/pub/bruce-williams/1/318/489> | Facebook <http://www.facebook.com/audio2u> -- On Thu, Aug 31, 2017 at 2:27 AM, Tobias Ellinghaus <m...@houz.org> wrote: > Hello everyone, > > as most of you probably noticed by now we have had quite some work done in > the > past months to port darktable to Windows. Re: [darktable-dev] Sony A850 and A200 raws cause darktable hang
I'm running Linux Mint, and shoot with an a850. Not having any issues here. I realise that doesn't help you much, but just wanted to stress that I don't think it's a dt issue. [darktable-dev] Split toning
Hi all, Full disclosure... complete Linux-noobie here. Been spending a ton of time with darktable over the last couple of weeks and am absolutely BLOWN AWAY!! Nice work, guys! Please forgive me if I've sent this to the wrong spot, or have ignored some etiquette that I should be aware of. Just wanted to make a feature request or maybe it's report a bug. We all understand how to read a histogram, right? Shadows are to the left, highlights are to the right. So, why is it that in the split toning module, the Balance slider works in the opposite direction? Highlights are to the left and shadows are to the right. This seems completely counter-intuitive to me. Am I missing something? K eep up the great work!
