[darktable-dev] Italian translation - guidelines needed

2022-02-16 Thread Maurizio Paglia
 Hi all,
with the Italian translation team we decided to review the UI completely in
order to settle some labels and modules in general.
While discussing the most appropriate terms we stuck with a question: what
is the correct direction we have to follow? Technical or informal?

darktable is evolving and becoming more and more technical. Some new
modules are very technical nevertheless not all users are graduated in
physics. Moreover one of the most negative comment I have ever found
regarding darktable is focused about its complicated interface.
Pieces of the present translation have been realized to be more 'user
friendly' focusing on the actual need of a user that has to develop raw
files but now we understand we have translated some slightly different
terms with the same Italian word. Nevertheless also the User Manual
sometimes uses terms in a non-strictly technical way and if I look to GIMP
(for example) they have translated brightness and lightness with the same
Italian word.

We are interested to know from developers and from other translation teams
what kind of translation you all expect to be used on the UI.
The User Manual will follow - of course - labels used in the UI.

Please apologize for this long message.
We await your kind comments.

Have a nice day,
Maurizio Paglia - Matteo Mardegan - Luca Cignoni

[darktable-dev] Problems with Crop and Rotate module

2020-09-09 Thread Maurizio Paglia
Hi, I have a strange problem of the a.m. module (dt 3.2.1 on Suse Leap
15.2).
When the module is activated - and the image has a vertical layout - the
crop window is drawn outside the image itself and cannot be adjusted.
If the image is horizontal the crop window is well drawn but - when dragged
- works very bad (the entire display is blinking and the final result is
always a very small part of the original image).

Thanks,

[darktable-dev] Chromatic aberrations

Hi all,
a friend let me note the Chromatic Aberrations module is not working.
I tested it and noted the histogram changes (so the module actually works)
but nothing seems to happen to the image.
I was wondering if this module will be deprecated since in the Lens
Correction one I can find Chromatic Aberrations corrections too.
Viceversa could it be useful to add to the Chromatic Aberrations modules
some controls so the user can control better the strength of the correction?

Re: [darktable-dev] [note] in darktable everything is written in lower case -- update translation

2019-12-22 Thread Maurizio Paglia
Hi all,
as already informed we have introduced capital letters at the beginning of
sentences in order to match Italian language rules.
Yesterday I revised again the .po file in order to bring back all lower
case in MODULES NAMES only.
Since dt3 can let you search by modules (and this field is case sensitive)
I put all modules name in lower cases in order to make search easier and
consistent with dt rules.
Thanks,
Maurizio

yes, I am here :-)
I will be glad to translate this article but I do not know if I will have
enough time before Christmas :-(
Do you know when the article will be finished (i.e. no more in draft

Re: [darktable-dev] [note] in darktable everything is written in lower case -- update translation

2019-12-11 Thread Maurizio Paglia
Hi all,
in the Italian translation we changed all strings with the initial
uppercase.
This is because in Italian all sentences starts with an uppercase so we
(Italian people) expect to see an uppercase at the beginning of a sentence.
At the same time we expect to find an uppercase after a full stop (.) etc.

Re: Fwd: [darktable-dev] Standardization of the writing of mouse interactions in the user manual

2019-10-02 Thread Maurizio Paglia
Hi all!
personally I prefere the concise form too, with capitalized button command
and '+' to clearly communicate it is a combo of buttons.
ctrl-click (NO)
Ctrl+click (YES)

Shift should be translated in native languages ('Maiusc' for Italian)

As regards mouse buttons...
Ctrl+click
Ctrl+(right click)
Ctrl+(mouse wheel) or (scroll wheel)

That's my opinion.
Have a nice day!
Maurizio

[darktable-dev] GitHub question for translation

2019-09-24 Thread Maurizio Paglia
Hi all,
do we have a standard method for a collaborative translation?

I can explain better.
This year the Italian translators have one volunteer more.
I desire to collect his translated strings in order to check and validate
them before pushing on dt master branch.
For this reason I asked him to send pull requests to my fork so I can
validate them, nerge them and push to dt master branch.

It sounds a little bit complicated...
Can you advise if we have a more linear method?

Thanks,
Maurizio

Re: [darktable-dev] noise

2018-11-05 Thread Maurizio Paglia
Hi Rolf,
I am not a programmer nor a graphic nerd. I simply take potographs in my
spare time.

I like dt because I know I have in my hands a powerful tool.
No matter if I use it 100% or 10%
I know dt is SO powerful thereby I have a large margin for improvement.
Moreover I feel curious and I like to learn things...

>From a photographer point of view: every raw developer software or
manipulation software are too much complicated.
A GOOD photography is made with light+emotions (NOT technique!).
Many times I read questions about subtle operations on photographs that are
more or less useless but people should always remember that a poor image
with a very good post-production will remain a poor image (but with nice
colours! :-).
People should focus on the goodness of the image.
So, choose the software that is more comfortable for you and go ahead with
it!
Learn some operations you feel comfortable with and try to learn how to do
them better (but do not study too much... go outside and take photographs).

Have a nice evening!
Maurizio

Re: [darktable-dev] noise

2018-11-05 Thread Maurizio Paglia
Ciao Andrey,
believe me: I understand your frustration but I can assure dt can give you
optimal results with no pain.
Its GUI can intimidate many users because it is "Linux style" (RT imitate
LR so it is more friendly to many people) but you cannot have power with a
'single slider' interface...
Moreover you can find on https://dtstyle.net/ a lot of presets that can
help you to reach a particular result but also can help you to understand
how modules and sliders work.
It is understood you can choose to use the raw developer you prefer, and it
is understood dt needs a little more time with study and trials.
Have a nice day,
Maurizio

Re: [darktable-dev] noise

2018-11-05 Thread Maurizio Paglia
Hi,
just for the record, did you tried to use some presets?
I understand dt can appear difficult, so you can try to apply a preset and
then - if needed - only adjust some sliders.

Tanks,
Maurizio

2018-04-25 Thread Maurizio Paglia
Just for the records - as regards OpenSuse Leap problem is solved using
darktable and lensfun from offical repos or 'graphics' repo (NOT
graphics/darktable).
Here below the complete bug issue
https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1090686

Enjoy

2018-04-24 Thread Maurizio Paglia
@ Frank
Tested your solution but still does not work.
Seems the only possibility is to downgrade lensfun from 0.3.2 to 0.3.1
I already opened a bug issue with Leap developers that already asked for
more information.

I will post further issue on the mailing list.
Thank you for your kind effort.

2018-04-23 Thread Maurizio Paglia
Thanks to all!

@ Mark Feit - I noticed too that Camera and Lens are duly identified in the
image data (lighttable)
I do not compile dt from sources but install my distribution RPMs
This evening I will try to downgrade lensfun to those recommended by my
package manager and will let you know.

I cannot see ANY camera brand in the combo list, it is empty...
Also images previously developed have the module activated but with NO

Re: [darktable-dev] Contextual help

2018-02-22 Thread Maurizio Paglia
Please apologize but I have another question.
Is it also possible to add contextual help to the TITLE of the module?
I mean the text beside the expansion triangle.

Re: [darktable-dev] Contextual help

2018-02-21 Thread Maurizio Paglia
Hi all,
I pushed to GitHub contextual help for a module.
Now it works!
I can find rather easily buttons but cannot understand how to add
contextual help to combo/menus like the one you can find attached.
Can someone tell me what type (name) of control should I search for?

Moreover is it also possible to add contextual help also to text boxes?
Are they considered widgets?

Thank you,
Maurizio

Hi Klaus,

I found here some information about LR catalogues and sidecar files.

Pay attention to the fact - for abvious reasons - LR sidecar files are not
100% compatible with dt

I think this function is not exactly related to raw development but rather a
more generic operation that an image manipulation software (like GIMP) can
take care.

When do you think to be in the position to release the final user manual?

when updating from the currently stable 2.2.x series, please bear in mind
that
your edits will be preserved during this process, but it will not be

to downgrade from 2.4 to 2.2.x any more.

Important note: to make sure that darktable can keep on supporting the
raw file format for your camera, *please* read [this post](https://

samples you can contribute to ensure that we have the *full* raw sample set
for your camera under CC0 license!

- The maintainership of the [RawSpeed library](https://github.com/
darktable-org/rawspeed) was transferred to the darktable project. The work
on code
cleanup, hardening, modernization, simplification and testing is ongoing.
- Almost 3 thousand commits to darktable+rawspeed since 2.2.0
- 273 pull requests handled
- 340+ issues closed
- Updated user manual is coming soon™

## Hell Froze Over

- As you might have read on our [news post](https://www.darktable.
org/2017/08/
darktable-for-windows/) we finally ported darktable to Windows and intend to
support it in the future. At the moment it's still lacking a few features
(for
example there is no printing support), has a few limitations (tethering
requires special drivers to be installed) and comes with its own set of bugs
(TIFF import and export doesn't support non-ASCII characters in file names).
But overall we are confident that it's quite usable already and hope you
will
enjoy it. A very special thanks goes to Peter Budai who finally convinced us
to agree to the port and who did most of the work.

## The Big Ones

- A new module for haze removal
- The local contrast module can now be pushed much further, it also got a
new
[local laplacian](https://www.darktable.org/2017/11/local-
laplacian-pyramids/)
mode
- Add undo support for masks and more intelligent grouping of undo steps
- Blending now allows to display individual channels using false colors
- darktable now supports loading Fujifilm compressed RAFs
- darktable now supports loading floating point HDR DNGs as written by
HDRMERGE
- We also added channel specific blend modes for Lab and RGB color spaces
- The base curve module allows for more control of the [exposure fusion]
range-with-exposure-fusion/) feature using the newly added bias slider
- The tonecurve module now supports auto colour adjustment in RGB
- Add absolute color input as an option to the color look up table module
- A new X-Trans demosaicing algorithm, Frequency Domain Chroma, was
implemented.
- You can now choose from pre-defined scheduling profiles for OpenCL
- Speaking of OpenCL, darktable now allows to force-use OpenCL for a
specific
pixelpipe
- XMP sidecar files are no longer written to disk when the content didn't
actually change. That mostly helps with network storage and backup systems
that use files' time stamps

## New Features And Changes

- Show a dialog window that tells when locking the database/library failed
- Don't shade the whole region on the map when searching for a location.
Instead just draw a border around it.
- Also in map mode: Clear the search list and map indicators when resetting
the search module.
- With OsmGPSMap newer than version 1.1.0 (i.e., anything released after
that
OsmGPSMap version) the map will show copyright info.
- Running jobs with a progressbar (mostly import and export) will show that
progress bar ontop the window entry in your task bar – if the system
supports
it. It should work on GNOME, KDE and Windows at least.
- Add bash like string replacement for variables (export, watermark, session
settings)
- Add a preferences option to ask before removing empty dirs
- The "colorbalance" module got a lot faster, thanks to SSE optimized code
- Make gradient sliders a little more colorful
- Make PNG compression level used for exporting configurable
- On OSX, load single images from command line or via drag in darkroom
mode
- Add an option to omit the intermediate tag hierarchy in exported files and

I open the it.po file in github (fully translated) and then open your pot file

Ciao Dominik, this is really interesting! I will give it a try. Thank you
Maurizio

Hi,
Small tip from my side. It's not perfect (yet! :) but it speedup my
processing a bit.

I've split my workflow for a few steps. For each step I've select a few
modules I'm using 99% of the time. Then I've selected them as a favorite
modules and I've created modules preset. I've add number as a prefix of
preset name to preserve order.

This way, I reduce my list to a few modules for given usecase (basic
cleanup, exposure correction, color grading, dodge & burn, denoise etc). I
also don't need to switch between tabs, I'm always on `favorites` one.

I'm aware of fixed pipline and the consequences, both performance and
graphical one. But both are simply not a problem in most of cases if you
know what you do and you hardware is good enough.

P.S. There is one annoying (for me) behaviour: when you switch preset, it
always change tab to the one where last enabled module is assigned. I've
patched this for myself to just not change tab at all...

Aurélien, this is really interesting.
I saw some output of Piccure+ and (if REAL and not otherwise handled) they
are really interesting!
I hope someone can help you with the porting.

Re: [darktable-dev] Feature request: Clipboard for darkroom settings (styles)

2017-10-06 Thread Maurizio Paglia
Ciao Johannes,
I cannot understand very well your question.
If you copy the history stack of a shot you can then paste it on more shots.
Select the already developed image, copy the history stack, select one or
more destination images, paste the history stack.

If you desire to copy history stack from a slot you can have different
history on each image contained in the slot itself...

Re: [darktable-dev] german documentation

2017-09-08 Thread Maurizio Paglia
I was impatient so I tested quickly DeepL
Translations have been done from English to Italian.
The first impression is very good! The system translates well
simple/ordinary sentences.
If you put many technical/specific words, translations are not 100% usable
out of the box.
Another problem seems to be the source, in this sense: it translates well
English but if you put something taken from an American source (i.e.
newspaper, etc.) the output is a lot worse...
Languages is English in both cases but the constructions of sentences are a
lot different!

In my experience translations from English to Italian will always be very
difficult because English is very simple while Italian is so complex.
Now - as soon as I will be back home - I have to test DeepL with some parts
of dt manual.
I expect to find good results with simplest parts and worst results with
more complex/long/technical sentences.

@ Roman: I agree with you. Translation must be done by humans because you
need grammar and vocabulary but also experience and brain.
Nevertheless if an auto-translator is good you could ask it to chew the
biggest job while you have only to refine the result.
It is a matter of time and quality of the result.

I will post more impressions as soon as possible.
Thank you all!
Maurizio

Ciao Vladimir,
I think this feature will help a lot of people (me too!).
Now the only option you have is to use a structured style name so they are

Re: [darktable-dev] guided filter for parametric and drawn masks

2017-03-23 Thread Maurizio Paglia
Hi, Heiko.
I saw this feature in LR brushes. It is very interesting.
dt masks are indeed more powerful and flexible than LR brushes and with
this new feature they will be more and more a real swiss army knife!
Hope to see this feature approved and merged in dt git soon.

Thank you for your great work!

why not adding an auto-hide option for the four panels (left/right and

[darktable-dev] Issue with Tamron lens

2016-10-04 Thread Maurizio Paglia
Hi all,
my Tamron SP AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II VC LD Aspherical (IF) is not
recognized inside darktable but I have to select manually Tamron SP AF
17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II VC LD Aspherical (IF).
The only difference is F/2.8 (uppercase while in dt list is lowercase).
I got in touch with Lensfun people but they told me Lensfun does not look
at upper/lower case.
Could it be a darktable issue?
Thanks,
Maurizio
