Re: [darktable-user] folder levels

2021-01-05 Thread Willy Williams
The answer is that I had been looking at the *original* version of
darktablerc.  The *user* version indicated the correct number.
Locations of both Windows and Linux versions have been noted for future
reference.

intentional, but I find it very inconvenient.

on further investigation, I find no setting the the
configuration/gear-wheel setting menu(s) any more for depth of directories
processed during import, but one may edit ~/.config/darktable/darktablerc
and adjust "show_folder_levels=#". Mine is set to "show_folder_levels=5".

preferences are stored in darktablerc and you must exit darktable, then
make changes to darktablerc, then reopen darktable for the changes to be

I am on linux and using master. I don't know what operating system or

close dt, edit darktablerc to set "show_folder_levels=" to what you

but one *usually* works a group of images just transferred from the camera
card and *usually* to one location and in this sense, non-recursive would
be the expected default.

if one procrastinates and imports larger and/or multiple groups of images at
one time, recursive *might* be a better choice.

but now we are at the same point of using a card-reader or importing
directly from the camera. I personally cannot understand wasting my
precious expensive camera batteries for transferring files. or the
related inherent clumsiness with my aged arthritic fingers.

OK!  That 'splains that!  I was unaware of there being two versions of
darktablerc.  Thank you for the clarity, Remco!

On Windows machines, the global version is located in C:\Program
Files\darktable\share\darktable, while the local version is located in
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\darktable.  The local version on my
machines DOES show file folder levels matching those in preferences.
Duly noted for future reference.  Thanks again, Remco!

(...)
That should indeed be the case:
your *local* darktablerc (see below) is read on startup, and the values there
are used and shown in the Preferences dialog. Changes made through the
Preferences dialog are written back to your local darktablerc (on exiting
darktable(?)).

Some changes can only be applied on start-up, so those require a restart to be
visible. But they are still stored internally and written back to darktablerc.

But keep in mind that there are *two* versions of darktablerc:
- a global one, used on first start, and containing default values. Users
normally cannot write to this file.
- a local one, written when you exit darktable and used on subsequent runs. So
in effect, the local darktablerc overrules the global darktablerc.

So the value in the *global* darktablerc can be different from what you see in
the Preferences dialog...

and as mentioned by someone a few minutes ago, make sure the darktablerc

So the value in the *global* darktablerc can be different from what you see in
the Preferences dialog...

close dt, edit darktablerc to set "show_folder_levels=" to what you
desire, save and reopen dt. do you now have what you want? may be a bug
that is fixed in 3.4.1 when it is released. may even be documented.

works for me on master

Even more interesting!  I'm on Windows 10 (2 machines), with levels set
to "3" in preferences, yet darktablerc still shows levels set to "1".
I'm using the general release of darktable 3.4.0, not a daily compilation.

This seems to be the entry in darktable.rc that effects the height of the
relevant box. Either it is a new preference or somehow or other in my case
it got reset to some minimal value.

since you provide little information about your system and/or darktable,
this answer may not be what you are looking for, but that's on you.

on the latest linux master at the time writing this, it resides in the
import bar, presets -> preferences

tomorrow may be different.
