[Debconf-discuss] gobby doc for today's BoF: Quality requirements for software in Debian

2011-07-25 Thread Thomas Koch
Hi,

I created a gobby document with my initial thoughts for today's (12:00) BoF
Quality requirements for software in Debian.

You're invited to already add your thoughts to the document.

aptitude install gobby-infinote

start gobby

connect to gobby.debian.net

Best regards,

[Debconf-discuss] Volunteer to give an introduction to DebBug's internals

2011-07-25 Thread Thomas Koch
Hi,

there are at least 8 ( *eight* ) people eager to learn about the internals of
debian's bugtracker. - But nobody to give a SkillsExchange session... :-(

http://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf11/SkillsExchange#Debian_Bugtracker_internals

Even if you only now parts of DebBugs, please consider giving a SkillsExchange
session about what you know! Maybe the session could be given from a team?

We should use every opportunity to get people involved in DebBugs!

[Debconf-discuss] Community-provided travel sponsorship for attendees

2011-07-25 Thread Richard Darst
Hi,

As happens every year, some DebConf attendees haven't gotten travel
sponsorship when they need it. Some Debian community members think
this year has been particularly bad, and want to do something about
it.

Thus, we wanted to make a contribute ourselves. Instead of just
chipping in to provide sponsorship for one person, I thought we
should make it more general (to allow other people the change for
community sponsorship).

If you, or someone you know, was denied travel sponsorship from the
DebConf travel sponsorship team, reply to this message explaining the
situation. Make sure to mention the person's Debian work.

Others, if you would like to contribute to the travel sponsorship of
someone mentioned here, reply to me (you do not have make your
contribution public, signed mail preferred) and indicate that you
would like to help. I will coordinate everything.

Ideally, you could donate part of your reimbursement to another
person. I am not sure if the DebConf team or Debian will allow this
(hopefully someone will decide to approve this). The next best option
would be donating money to Debian, which Debian would then use for
travel sponsorship for the specific people. I am also not sure if
DebConf/Debian will allow this. The last option would be for direct
attendee-attendee payments.

When replying with a contribution, please indicate:
- Who you would like to donate to (please not anyone)
- Maximum amount you would like to give
- share you would like to give. Default share is 1. The total
expenses will be divided up among everyone whom would like to
contribute, in the ratio of their shares not to exceed their
personal maximum. The person receiving the sponsorship will pay a
share of max(1, max_other_contributor's_share) for themselves.

I will send a list of all contributions only to all contributors (and
person receiving funding), so that they can check that everything is
correct. I won't make it public otherwise.

It would be better if we did not get to this situation, but as of now,
for this conference, the only way to fix things is from the outside.
I do not like the thought of attendees giving money to other attendees
any more than you do, but we have been forced to this if we want to
help out our own. This is not just a wild idea, there are already
five or more people who want to donate to the attendee whose situation
inspired this scheme. This email provides the opportunity for more
than just one person to benefit.

Thanks,

- Richard

p.s. This email purposely does not mention any specific person,
although this thread was inspired by one specific case. People can be
mentioned in follow-ups.

Considering that you would like to be in Zagreb at 7:25 and are
mentioning a bus at 03:15: My guess is that you probably will not find
so many attendees who would like to share and pay such an early bus.

No - but it's a public bus that runs anyway. The fewer people that
want to use up places the better :-) I've already had someone
sugesting a shared taxi.

And since you are speaking yourself of a 3:15 bus I wonder whether
your name on the Wiki list makes any sense.

Well, given that the 6am bus does not run on Sunday, there might be
quite a few people that end up wanting the 03:15. I thought if everyone
put their requirements down then it should be fairly clear to people
what needed to be arranged. i.e it'd be useful to know if there are 4
or 15 people who need to be in Zagreb before 11:55 (which without
extra buses means catching the 03:15).

 (I also wonder if you
have enough safety time planned - 4:10 hours might be a bit dense.)

It is a bit tight, but the timetable says it should be there by 6:00,
so allegedly I have 1:15 slack (plus 10 mins to run to Train station).

Hi,

two items here:

*) Please clean up the table you were sitting at in hacklab before you leave.
Having litter on the tables is bad and also will leave bad impression on
the local staff here.

*) don't watch the streams via wireless, esp if you are sitting in the very
same room as the talk you are watching at is happening. That will make
wireless not work better in the auditoriums.

Wireless in the auditorium dies as soon as more than, say, 25% the room
sits down. Putting up some more APs or even more small switches would be
beneficial because this is pretty annoying.

The many power outlets were nicely laid down along the room and that's
really useful, but I'm sure people would gladly sacrifice e.g. every sixth
outlet for a working network port of some kind :)

Oh and while we're at the topic of common sense, someone should probably
tell people to remember to kill wifi on their smartphones while they're
using their laptop and vice versa, because in our kind of gadget-happy crowd

Hell yeah!

Current state of Debian on N9** is pretty much a bad joke :( -- a chroot
works adequately, but for directly installing, http://wiki.debian.org/pkg-n900
says only display, keyboard and touchscreen work. As someone not well

Not too late, but yes, we need to ask locals about other possible places to
rent more bikes. Or even arrange another round for it, which could be someday
starting at 7-8 am :)

Re: [Debconf-discuss] Busses for departure

2011-07-25 Thread Christian PERRIER
Quoting Martín Ferrari (martin.ferr...@gmail.com):
 Andreas, et al.

I just wanted to point out that the company we contracted to come from
Zagreb, were really friendly and helpful. They might have delayed us a
little, but it was good overall. The price was 275 euro per bus that
 can carry 8 people.
 The company is connecto-taxi.com, phone +385 21 312 595, and they speak
 English.

If you cannot fill an integer number of buses, there is taxis that
costed 160 euro from Zagreb, and you can put 3 people on them.

From the number that already registered on the RentABus page (51 ppl
last time I checked), it's
quite likely that we can fill in one and probably two large buses. So,
the main point is to be sure that this is the option we choose.

I guess that many ppl haven't registered in this page, yet. So, I'm
fairly sure that the number may raise up to 100 ppl. As a consequence,
the plan could be renting a large bus leaving at about 8:00am (thus
reaching ZAG around 11:00-12:00) and another leaving around 11:00.

I'll be busy most of the day preparing the CW but I think Andreas
and/or Ian will keep an eye on all this.

[Debconf-discuss] HP laptop giveaway

2011-07-25 Thread Gunnar Wolf
== What‽ ==

Yes. We are giving away a HP Mini 2102 laptop. Why? HP gave it to
DebConf during DebConf10, and it spent several months in the previous
year's organizer's hands. They brought it to Banja Luka, and don't
want to take it back.

Keeping a netbook as property of DebConf does not seem very useful, as
the computer is underpowered for many of the tasks we usually need
(i.e. video work). And even if it were a good frontdesk machine, it
would mean 11.5 months a year gathering dust — Not an exciting
prospect for it!

=== Specs ===

The computer is currently in the possession of Luca Capello (Gismo)
and will be used at frontdesk during DebConf11, in case you want to
look at it. The basic characteristics are:

* 2GB RAM
* N450 Atom CPU
* 1.66GHz
* I _think_ it has an extended (6-cell) battery

As the machine currently still boots with Windows 7, I was not brave
enough to gather further information. Please fill it in here if you
get it.

== Mechanics ==

Giving away a laptop just as a raffle is not particularly a good idea,
as probably it would end up with somebody not really ''needing'' (or
even wanting) it. So, we decided to make a list of people interested
in receiving it, along with a short reason on why they need it.

Please go to http://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf11/HPLaptopGiveaway
to sign up.

Maybe. Annette and me were at the bike shop this aftern and we
reserved the bikes for Friday evening 20:00 at the bike shop.

We also asked them for other bike shops who possibly offer bikes for
rental and they showed us the bike shop just a few meters farther, but
they only sell bikes.

We then went to the tourist office again to ask them again if they
know another bike rental, but they told us the bike shop does the
rental thing just on behalf of the tourist info.

But the guy in the tourist info phoned around a little bit and seems
to see some chance to get more bicycles. He will know more tomorrow
morning or so, and promised to write me an e-mail tomorrow
independently if he found other bikes or not.

[Debconf-discuss] Organiser team meetings

2011-07-25 Thread Moray Allan
Just a quick note to those thinking of bidding for a future DebConf,
and to other interested people:

The daily organiser meetings are happening at 2 p.m. in the meeting
room (next to the 'round room' with talks). They're a chance for
quick face-to-face transfers of information between the organisers,
not a forum for other attendees to raise topics directly, but
interested people who want to get more involved in the DebConf team
are still welcome to join the organising team by attending.

(If you're thinking of bidding, you should of course be reading the
debconf-team list and IRC channel, but I guess not everyone is yet.)

works adequately, but for directly installing, http://wiki.debian.org/pkg-n900
says only display, keyboard and touchscreen work. As someone not well

wifi works. phone not yet. This will be quite a lot of work as all the audio

which is something we should fix today! :-)

How does this second rating step relate to the first? I.e., we are meant
to evaluate just problems that are related to the transcoding, or this
must be a complete evaluation of each aspect of the final video?

For instance, suppose that that at some point the DV files contains
noises caused by feedback or someone touching the microphone: this means
that I'll rate a B to the DV file, since the audio is not excellent. But
then suppose that the transcoding is excellent: no artifact, very little
distortion and so on. Should the transcoded file be rated A or B?

Moreover, I suppose that the words excellent, good and poor are to
be scaled according to the file bitrate, isn't it?

Thanks, Gio.

write me an e-mail to ti...@debian.org.

Currently there were representatives from Univention and GRML and I will
ask some Ubuntu people hanging around here. But the round table might
deserve some more color ...

Re: [Debconf-discuss] Packaging for beginners - expert wanted

2011-07-25 Thread Gergely Nagy
I was planning something inbetween for completely beginners and I
packaged gcc, with the intent of showing fun stuff to both parts of the
audience.

There's a lot of things about packaging that can be said, and most of it
is very well documented already - so I do not plan to go into the very
gory details there, but show an example or two instead, so people will
get the hang of it.

Once they have the hang of it, they can always consult the documentation
later, if they wish to know more; or, find me or anyone else with
suitable packaging knowledge, and just ask them.

Contrary to Enrico, I'd ask interested people to NOT read the
documentation just yet. It's a bit dry and boring, and can be
dishartening at first: it is a *lot* of text to wade through. Even
Lucas' excellent packaging-tutorial is a lot to read in an overnight.

Instead, I propose to show interesting things, and explain the very
basic parts briefly (but in detail enough to be understandable), and
show that packaging can be a fun and rewarding experience.

If and when I succeed, the brain-washed victims^W^Waudience can go out
and read the documentation, knowing that in the end, reading through
that big pile of text is going to be worth it. It is also easier to
digest, once one had first-hand experience with packaging.

(Now if I only had an idea how to achieve this... but alas, the night is
long, and the talk isn't scheduled yet, so I'm going to be just fine! :)
