[Debconf-discuss] Volunteer to give an introduction to DebBug's internals
Hi, there are at least 8 ( *eight* ) people eager to learn about the internals of debian's bugtracker. - But nobody to give a SkillsExchange session... :-( http://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf11/SkillsExchange#Debian_Bugtracker_internals Even if you only now parts of DebBugs, please consider giving a SkillsExchange session about what you know! [Debconf-discuss] Community-provided travel sponsorship for attendees
Hi, As happens every year, some DebConf attendees haven't gotten travel sponsorship when they need it. Some Debian community members think this year has been particularly bad, and want to do something about it. Thus, we wanted to make a contribute ourselves. Instead of just chipping in to provide sponsorship for one person, I thought we should make it more general (to allow other people the change for community sponsorship). If you, or someone you know, was denied travel sponsorship from the DebConf travel sponsorship team, reply to this message explaining the situation. Make sure to mention the person's Debian work. Others, if you would like to contribute to the travel sponsorship of someone mentioned here, reply to me (you do not have make your contribution public, signed mail preferred) and indicate that you would like to help. I will coordinate everything. Ideally, you could donate part of your reimbursement to another person. I am not sure if the DebConf team or Debian will allow this (hopefully someone will decide to approve this). The next best option would be donating money to Debian, which Debian would then use for travel sponsorship for the specific people. I am also not sure if DebConf/Debian will allow this. The last option would be for direct attendee-attendee payments. When replying with a contribution, please indicate: - Who you would like to donate to (please not anyone) - Maximum amount you would like to give - share you would like to give. Default share is 1. The total expenses will be divided up among everyone whom would like to contribute, in the ratio of their shares not to exceed their personal maximum. The person receiving the sponsorship will pay a share of max(1, max_other_contributor's_share) for themselves. I will send a list of all contributions only to all contributors (and person receiving funding), so that they can check that everything is correct. I won't make it public otherwise. It would be better if we did not get to this situation, but as of now, for this conference, the only way to fix things is from the outside. I do not like the thought of attendees giving money to other attendees any more than you do, but we have been forced to this if we want to help out our own. This is not just a wild idea, there are already five or more people who want to donate to the attendee whose situation inspired this scheme. This email provides the opportunity for more than just one person to benefit. Thanks, - Richard p.s. This email purposely does not mention any specific person, although this thread was inspired by one specific case. People can be mentioned in follow-ups. -- | Richard Darst - rkd@ - boltzmann: up 734 days, 3:32 |http://rkd.zgib.net - pgp 0xBD356740 | Ye shall know the truth and -- the truth shall make you free ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss

No - but it's a public bus that runs anyway. The fewer people that want to use up places the better :-) I've already had someone sugesting a shared taxi. And since you are speaking yourself of a 3:15 bus I wonder whether your name on the Wiki list makes any sense. Well, given that the 6am bus does not run on Sunday, there might be quite a few people that end up wanting the 03:15. I thought if everyone put their requirements down then it should be fairly clear to people what needed to be arranged. i.e it'd be useful to know if there are 4 or 15 people who need to be in Zagreb before 11:55 (which without extra buses means catching the 03:15). (I also wonder if you have enough safety time planned - 4:10 hours might be a bit dense.) It is a bit tight, but the timetable says it should be there by 6:00, so allegedly I have 1:15 slack (plus 10 mins to run to Train station). [Debconf-discuss] HP laptop giveaway
== What‽ == Yes. We are giving away a HP Mini 2102 laptop. Why? HP gave it to DebConf during DebConf10, and it spent several months in the previous year's organizer's hands. They brought it to Banja Luka, and don't want to take it back. Keeping a netbook as property of DebConf does not seem very useful, as the computer is underpowered for many of the tasks we usually need (i.e. video work). And even if it were a good frontdesk machine, it would mean 11.5 months a year gathering dust — Not an exciting prospect for it! === Specs === The computer is currently in the possession of Luca Capello (Gismo) and will be used at frontdesk during DebConf11, in case you want to look at it. The basic characteristics are: * 2GB RAM * N450 Atom CPU * 1.66GHz * I _think_ it has an extended (6-cell) battery As the machine currently still boots with Windows 7, I was not brave enough to gather further information. Please fill it in here if you get it. == Mechanics == Giving away a laptop just as a raffle is not particularly a good idea, as probably it would end up with somebody not really ''needing'' (or even wanting) it. So, we decided to make a list of people interested in receiving it, along with a short reason on why they need it. As you prefer, just tell us/me what you have in mind. start from the scratch. abc ;) regards jana -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.10 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iQEcBAEBAgAGBQJOLcXFAAoJEMJpy/syMAXxjU0H/1ykSagnb+vAJGRsBkEQ/vOG boW48hPT+xcfpVldyS2hBTVOpio65hKNgr3Fm5utD/qaOLdkCdDYl7EF2t7AsmXE Rn+OXYKN96g24bSvSMRuk2UuUB+iH6bJS7FlYFmmUYDkEXTxWijjEXTRHnqUNVjn RXvOzfT1o+kv7c2+8lVEC0qa373OwFKMb2ofoOnF9bCs0ua4BXf05RwAieK79rU+ kARCgNp6pYMtLeEjXttshopMymk2plAMuUQXBedMygo7jv6PIzEWFahx5ohIV8ES JXDz7KEMMrftm5bhbJ4TgPWmpC6janO7ovewHEszRoT6Mp2dQO63Jipiq2wa8s0= =o2tO -END PGP SIGNATURE- ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss

So I think the best is to start from the anatomy of an existing package, how to modifiy it and rebuild it. So that you attenders have a test bed, a toy to play with. For my students, I usually start from the package sl, it may work for you too. Re: [Debconf-discuss] Packaging for beginners - expert wanted
I was planning something inbetween for completely beginners and I packaged gcc, with the intent of showing fun stuff to both parts of the audience. There's a lot of things about packaging that can be said, and most of it is very well documented already - so I do not plan to go into the very gory details there, but show an example or two instead, so people will get the hang of it. Once they have the hang of it, they can always consult the documentation later, if they wish to know more; or, find me or anyone else with suitable packaging knowledge, and just ask them. Contrary to Enrico, I'd ask interested people to NOT read the documentation just yet. It's a bit dry and boring, and can be dishartening at first: it is a *lot* of text to wade through. Even Lucas' excellent packaging-tutorial is a lot to read in an overnight. Instead, I propose to show interesting things, and explain the very basic parts briefly (but in detail enough to be understandable), and show that packaging can be a fun and rewarding experience. If and when I succeed, the brain-washed victims^W^Waudience can go out and read the documentation, knowing that in the end, reading through that big pile of text is going to be worth it. It is also easier to digest, once one had first-hand experience with packaging. (Now if I only had an idea how to achieve this... but alas, the night is long, and the talk isn't scheduled yet, so I'm going to be just fine! :) -- |8] ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss

I.e., we are meant to evaluate just problems that are related to the transcoding, or this must be a complete evaluation of each aspect of the final video? Basically reviewing the transcoding.
