[Debconf-discuss] The Return of the Assassins

2012-06-27 Thread Christian PERRIER
Hello fellow Debconf 12 attendees,

We are reviving Debconf Assassins.

In past Debconf, playing the Assassins game became a kind of
tradition. At least, it happened during DC6, DC7, DC8 and
DC9. Unfortunately, DC10 and DC11 didn't seeany game organised,
mostly because nobody took time to do so. I don't want this to happen.

DC12 *will* have its Assassins game.

What is the game? The best way to explain it is pointing you to the
dedicated wiki page:
http://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf12/Assassins.

As you may see, despite the name, no violence, no hate. Just fun.

The only action you have to do if you want to participate is checking
the "Participate in the Assassins game" checkbox in your personal page
in Penta : https://penta.debconf.org/penta/submission/dc12/person

Do not register to the game if you plan to arrive at DC12 after Sunday
July 15th. Do not register if you plan to leave earlier than Friday
20th either.

Please also DON'T FORGET TO REGISTER when arriving at Debconf as
Assassins referees will try to avoid "ghost targets" (people assigned
as target to someone but who never showed up). It is not fun to seek
for someone who is just not there.

Please feel free to ask for details or send suggestions (this is my
first Assassins game as organizer) in this mailing list.

[Debconf-discuss] Adapter for US powerplugs

2012-06-27 Thread Judit Foglszinger
Hi,

Are adapters needed for US type [B] powerplugs
to fit into [A] connectors at the venue?

And are they available either in Managua or in NYC?
(lacking the right name, I call them B2A Adapters)

Hi!, yes if you had the ground type B2A (NEMA 5, two blades + ground
round blade) you need an adapter for the more common on Nema 1 (two
blades only), you need one of this [1] normally if you had a European
converter it will include several types of adapters, in any case I
also use them and plan to carry like 4 of them as they cost in México
5MXN at conversion rate of today is like 35cents of USD... I can lend
you one... but i think also in Managua wont be hard to find and
probably equally cheap, if not I can bring some more and also planing
on carrying a power strip including 5 NEMA5 outlets.

Regards.

But also note if your equipment is designed to be grounded, it may be
unsafe to operate like this without a ground connection. It should be
fine for normal laptops etc., though.

You can buy these B2A adapters here in Managua. At the shopping mall
close to the venue they should be available. Anyway, we probably will
have some at the front desk buyable for the purchase price.

Re: [Debconf-discuss] [Debconf-team] Local SIMS for cel phones

2012-06-27 Thread Rodrigo Rodriguez
JFTR, you can buy local SIMs in Metrocentro, just a few blocks near the
venue.

There are two operators in Nicaragua: Movistar and Claro. I wouldn't
recommend the second one. I could say is more expensive and worst than the
first one.

On the website you can find some information:
http://debconf12.debconf.org/local-information.xhtml#phone-internet
Within the local team we mainly use Movistar cell phones (t is a lot
cheaper to call within the same companies numbers).

For Internet I usually take Claro, because they give two weeks of 1Mbit
with a max. transfer limit of 1GB for around $9 [1].
The deal René describes with Movistar sounds good, but officially on the
website Movistar Internet quite more expensive and pretty limited [2].
René do you have something written (link?) about the deal you got?

Cheers,
Felix

Tricky question. That makes you an harder to catch target, for
sure. So, not really fair for the person who has you as target.

[Debconf-discuss] Bring along previous year's debconf shirts!

2012-06-27 Thread Gerfried Fuchs
   Hi!

If you remember, we managed to do a nice group photo about previous
year's debconf shirts[1] during last year's social event. This photo
was used in the final report and helps promote the idea of debconf (at
least, in my opinion) about an established event that helps getting
people to get together, discuss issues and make progress in development.

[1]

I think it would be great if we manage that again this year and just to
be on the save side, I would encourage people to bring along previous
year's debconf shirts.

Please bring regular attendee shirts, not organizers/videoteam/volunteer
shirts, as the photo should carry the regular shirts. If you like
helping to get this done, I started with this wiki page:

(I haven't packed yet so I am not completely sure which shirts I'll
bring along, but those are the ones most likely :))

Thanks, and see you over there!

Maybe you could be an additional target for bored murderers ;)
Meaning, you could be assigned as a second target of one person
in a randomized way (as a hard to kill joker or so).

[Debconf-discuss] Remember : we need your cheese!

2012-06-27 Thread Christian PERRIER
We need you at Debconf.

But we also need your cheese to make a successful Cheese and Wine
party. The success of the party is made ofwhat participants bring
to it.

So, don't forget packing some pieces of cheese and|or wine from your
place (one less t-shirt, one more cheese).

More information at
http://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf12/CheeseWineBoF. Or just
ask. But, bring cheese. Really. Every country in the world has good
cheese.

(and every country in the world has good variants of ethanol-based
liquids, though wine if course course meant to be the basic material
for C&W)

Don't forget your cheese. And while at it, don't forget bringing at
least one sock to play Assassins. Yes, you can wrap the choose in the
sock.

It might be interesting to include information there on how the
booking process for the data plans works, at least I fail to extract
that from both providers' websites... as well as other simple commands
as checking the balance and the number of the Voice Mailbox ;)

Plus, that recharge mostly works by giving somebody money and your
number, and this person sends a code with their phone to recharge you
- you'll get a confirmation. In Germany at least, you buy a code
yourself and enter it. (i can add that myself if somebody confirms
that what I saw is the common process).

Some ideas from my own experience :)

[Debconf-discuss] Accommodation for DebConf12 + Shuttle service

2012-06-27 Thread Leandro Gómez
Hola!

For DebConf12 we're going to have two primary hotels; Seminole and Brandt.
Both hotels are near the UCA venue and ~3 blocks from each other. Please
check the map at our website for distances and directions:
http://debconf12.debconf.org/map.en.xhtml

> People arriving from the 1st-6th July are staying at the Seminole Hotel
> People arriving on or after 7th July are staying at the Brandt Los Robles
de San Juan Hotel

Please note that 'Brandt Los Robles de San Juan' and 'Brandt Colonial Los
Robles' are two different hotels (marked as Brandt's I (#10) and Brandt's
II (#7) on the map). They have the same owner, but are ~1km apart.

Additional information on the hotels can be found in our wiki page:
http://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf12/Hotels

As for the transportation from the airport to the hotel, Seminole/Brandt
are providing free shuttle service for all attendees. Please make sure to
mark the 'Shuttle service' column on the arrivals wiki page if you want to
use that service: http://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf12/Arrivals

We'll probably also have shuttle service for the departures, but that can
be arranged on site.

If you have additional questions, please reply to this thread or drop by
IRC and ask your friendly organizing team.

Have a nice flight and see you in Managua in a couple of days!

After a short discussion on IRC, we decided it's best for us (and more
convenient for you) to just mark your arrival and departure time+date in
penta and we pass the list to the hotels.

If you absolutely don't want to be picked up at the airport/want some
exercise by walking to the hotel, please let us know by private mail and we
scratch you from the list.
