[Debconf-discuss] Showering

2015-08-17 Thread markus schnalke
Hoi.

I'm not sleeping at the location but in my car. After two
days, it would be great to take a shower. Is there someone
who would let me use the shower in his room?

I wear a yellow sweater, short blue trowsers, a green backpack,
beard and (in the meanwhile sweaty) long hair in a ponytail.
It may even be possible to locate me by sense of smell. ;-)
Please just talk to me.

[Debconf-discuss] Crowdfunding for Free Software Bof (14:00, Wien)

2015-08-17 Thread Daniel Pocock

I've added another ad-hoc meeting to the noticeboard by the front desk

Room: Wien (second floor, building A)
Date: Monday 17 August
Time: 14:00

Free software is not free to produce. Developers need to eat, pay for
computers and electricity and even pay expenses for attending fun events
like DebConf. Crowd funding on sites like Kickstarter and IndieGogo is
an option many individuals and businesses are looking at.

This BoF is an opportunity to discuss questions such as:

- what are the options for crowdfunding?

- is it OK to promote fundraising activities through communities like
Debian, using resources like the mailing lists, Planet or DebConf?
Should Debian actively support such initiatives and under what terms?

- how to run a crowdfunding campaign?

- what is the ratio of time/effort spent on promotion vs the time/effort
spent on development?

- have incomplete projects made it harder for people to raise funds?

- are there options like escrow that could improve confidence?

- are there any specific projects that you would like to see promoted in
this way, even if it is not your own project?

[Debconf-discuss] Ad-Hoc Talk Announcement: A glimpse at LiMux – Maintaining lightweight office-based business applications

2015-08-17 Thread Florian Haftmann
Tuesday 15:00, Madrid

Preface
The municipality of Munich runs a Debian-based free desktop system on
18.000 machines, typically called »LiMux«. When maintaining such a big
amount of installations in such a heterogeneous environment, unforeseen
demands come to surface. This talk gives a typical example. Questions
may cover other LiMux-related topics, too.

Abstract
Office applications, particularly spreadsheets, are used pervasively to
model and support business processes. This is promoted further by
extensions and macros: office applications usually provide means to
extend them programmatic. While this is fine at first, there are life
cycle nightmares lurking ahead: self-baked macros provide hardly what
you expect to maintain an economic life cycle, and there is a tendency
to provide functionality for which office applications are not the
platform of choice.
When maintaining an office suite, new releases inevitably exhibit
incompatibilities and deficiencies in pre-existing customer macros, and
these need to be addressed. There are two radical answers: a) leave the
business department with their own crap, risking that they will not
accept your office service in the long run; b) take over maintenance of
macros yourself.
An economic strategy acts somewhere in between: try hard to minimize the
number of macros in production, but maintain those actively for which no
substitute is available.
The talk gives an overview how the LiMux project in Munich had coped
with that situation, and which tools we have developed to support
maintenance.

About the presenter
Florian Haftmann works as IT system developer at the municipality
administration of Munich (Bavaria / Germany) since 2011. On his journey
through the vast fields of Open Source Systems in the city, Office
macros once have stuck to his shoes and have continued to accompany him
until today.

Here I have a macbook pro 5,1 (late 2008 - intel cpu), running OS X
10.10 (Yosemite), with Debian in a virtualbox VM.

I would like to setup a dual boot configuration with Debian Testing

My first question is:
- Is rEFIt or rEFInd still necessary?

Besides the info on the wiki, is there any important thing to do before
to proceed?

[Debconf-discuss] Dungeons and Dragons @ DebConf - Tuesday (tomorrow) evening

2015-08-17 Thread Jimmy Kaplowitz
Hi everyone,

I'll be running a Dungeons Dragons tabletop roleplaying game session tomorrow
night and welcome players. For those who haven't done this before, it's
basically collaborative storytelling where every player controls an adventurer
in a fantasy world, and I'll be controlling the rest of the world while keeping
the game moving. Dice, rules, and character sheets will assist us in the
storytelling but the experience is the primary thing. No prior knowledge
necessary.

Preferably let me know if you're interested so I can plan accordingly, but you
can also just show up.

I will be in the Athena room (3rd floor building A) beginning at 19:00
tomorrow, unless I announce a change of location here and on #debconf. We'll
start by explaining how this works for people who don't already know,
introducing players to their characters, and maybe creating new characters if
time and motivation permit. We'll aim to start playing by 19:45-20:00.

Extra details for people who already know DD: This will be 5th edition, and
characters will begin at level 1. I'm still deciding which adventure to run but
it will be in a reasonably typical fantasy environment, possibly the Forgotten
Realms but not necessarily. I have two sets of dice, some mechanical pencils
and one physical copy of the 5e Player's Handbook. More of these supplies would
be welcome, as would graph paper for map drawing, but we can make do with what

[Debconf-discuss] Dancing - intro to Brazilian Zouk Wed 21:00 in the foyer

2015-08-17 Thread Lynoure Braakman

Now that ice has been broken when it comes to social dancing, I'd like to
introduce you to the dance I love, Brazilian Zouk, a beautiful danced often
the very modern music.

Let's meet in the foyer on 21:00 on Wednesday!
I promise to keep the pace totally suitable even for people who have never
danced anything before, so come and give it a try!

Q: What does the dance look like?
A: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNqAQLOUtsc is a quite a good example.
The couple in the middle are professionals, others are of various skill levels.
Some further examples:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fp2NVlM8CT (a professional couple)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBhUp5Rm0XM (a dance party, so again various
styles and levels)

Q: Is that really suitable for beginners?
A: The movements in the intro will be quite simple, and completely
upright and non-acrobatic. Those fancy movements with hair flying are a bit
too advanced for the intro, but I can show the basic idea of one such
hair movement, if there is interest.

So the departure would be between 8:30 and 10:10. For cycling personally

Bring your swimming stuff with you to enjoy a break in water somewhere?

[Debconf-discuss] Daytrip via bike: lending the bike you don't need to others, route

2015-08-17 Thread Timo Weingärtner
Hi,

there will be a bike tour on Wednesday and I decided to be the organizer.

There are people who might want to join but don't have a bike here. I also
know of people who have their bike here but chose another alternative for the
daytrip. People of both groups: please write a private email to me so I can
match offers and needs.

I also thought about a route. The first idea was to cycle along the local
river (Neckar), but i don't really want to see the same landscape on the way
back.

The second route[1] is first going north, then up on some hills, down to
Neckarsteinach and back along the river, with a detour to Heidelberg castle.
That route has 53 km and the highest point is 350 m above here.

Other route suggestions are welcome.

Cheers
Timo

[Debconf-discuss] Installing Debian on a macbook pro 5,1

2015-08-17 Thread Eder L. Marques

Hi folks,

I noticed that some of you have a MacBook machine here at Debconf, and I
am wondering to take advantage of that.

Here I have a macbook pro 5,1 (late 2008 - intel cpu), running OS X
10.10 (Yosemite), with Debian in a virtualbox VM.

I would like to setup a dual boot configuration with Debian Testing
amd64, and have read some documentations in our wiki [1, 2, 3].

My first question is:
- Is rEFIt or rEFInd still necessary?

Besides the info on the wiki, is there any important thing to do before
to proceed?

Many thanks!

[Debconf-discuss] Hints and un-hints in Heidelberg

2015-08-17 Thread Andreas Tille
Hi,

my wife pointed me to

Hope this might be helpful also for non-German speakers with some online
translation.

For those who (like me) are addicted to swimming: The pool closeby has
closed because of bad weather conditions. I have no idea what they
mean and I'm seriously disappointed - I really hoped for a serious swimm
in a not crowded pool.

Kind regards

[Debconf-discuss] Key signing: caff vs. recommeded gpg.conf

2015-08-17 Thread Christian Seiler
Hi!

just a heads-up: if you are using the gpg.conf file by Jacob Applebaum
as recommeded in
https://people.debian.org/~anibal/ksp-dc15/ksp-dc15.html, caff (at
least for signing-party 1.1.x, haven't checked 2.x) won't work.

The reason is that that configuration file sets the option
'with-fingerprint' in gpg.conf, which displays fingerprints for all
keys. While a good idea for gnupg itself, this is a problem for caff, as
it tries to figure out what your own public keys are by parsing the
output of gpg and looking for lines containing fingerprints - and with
the 'with-fingerprint' option, also the private keys' fingerprints will
be shown in the output of gpg that caff tries to parse - and it will
then complain that it couldn't import all of your own public keys (with
a kind-of cryptic message) and won't even get to the signing part.

So either:

  - temporarily remove the with-fingerprint option before using caff
to sign your keys (and re-add it later)

  - remove the symlink of gpg.conf in .caff/gnupghome and replace it
with a copy without the with-fingerprint option

(I'll file a bug report later.)

Christian
