 Read this to understand the basic Debian process CD/DVD's.

 It's a bit long but it does answer the basic image questions.

 that question should also be addressed to tyan but i do not know where.

Using fakeraids (which most onboard raids are) isn't worth it. You
can't easily move the disks to another system and continue reading the
raid if the board dies. This is also true of hardware raids, but at
least those you can move the controller over too, and usually you can
get replacement raidcards (they change a lot less often than
mainboards).

Linux software raid generally is also better performance than the
fakeraids, and easier to manage, and it is supported by the debian
installer, which fakeraid isn't.

I have just installed amd64 eich for dual opterons, X-system is waiting to

 Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have

 Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
 the package is simply not installable and a bug report against

 The following information may help to resolve the situation:

 The following packages have unmet dependencies:

 So I'm assuimg this all has to do with the migration over to the main
 debian FTP sites and that testing/etch will eventually catch up. Is this a
 correct assumption?

 If it is correct, can somebody give me a ballpark timeline when I can
 expect to be able to install the etch version of KDE for this platform?

 I have yet to meet one that didn't work. Firewire 800 might be

I installed about two months ago using the net-inst image from here:

It worked for me.

Re: What's the status of KDE in testing/etch?

2006-05-26 Thread Ernest Knipp
I have not found a current kde for etch so far; however, you must have
the woody and sarge directories in your system; use find to look for
them. There you will find what seem to be some older versions of kde
and gdm; does anyone know how to make these work with etch? I suppose
they are the older versions.

I have a replaceable hard drive, so I can easily switch between 64 bit
Windows xp, sarge, and etch. kde is available in sarge, and almost
works; I just am not able to configure X properly. If I had xorgconfig
available there, I think sarge would be acceptable. I recommend setting
up so you can switch hard drives for this kind of work. My motherboard
is Asus A8N-E

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against

The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

But now I faced the strange problem: a lot of packages aren't available

And one of the nastiest things is unavailable gcc 8( So I can't install

Can anyone explain me what's going on? Is official arch inclusion not
over yet? Where can I find the progress reports?

Thanks a lot in advance.

I ran into a similar situation last week when ditching an nvidia card
for the onboard via. Check your xorg.conf file and see if it has the
correct entries for your system. dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg ran
through all of the questions (and even remembered my entries from
previous runs), but would not change the xorg.conf file because it
looked like it was a customized file. Part of the problem was due to
upgrading from etch and it's stock kernel (2.6.15-blah) to sid
(2.6.16-blah) and modules like nv not being available.

hope this helps,

 I have yet to meet one that didn't work. Firewire 800 might be
 different, but all the 400Mbit ports have worked that I have tried.

I think many of us are running debian-amd64 on A8N-SLI. Can be awkward

The errors about modules by themselves aren't fatal, except possibly for
the mouse module. You can fix that by installing
xserver-xorg-modules-input-mouse (or something similar, search for
xserver.*mouse) in dselect).

Look in /var/log/xorg.log.0 (or something like that; 'ls -lrt' in
/var/log after you try to start X and it will be one log files at the
end of the listing). This log file will tell you why it found no
screens. One way for that to happen is when the vert and horiz sync
ranges are too narrow and the resolutions too high. You can expand the
ranges (the manual for the monitor will have the safe ranges, could be
something like 30-65 for horiz and 60-90 for vert); or you can try a
lower resolution in the screen section (for example, add 800x600 so that
that is looks like
   Modes 800x600 1600x1200

The log file will be helpful in diagnosing this.

If all else fails, you can always uninstall all xserver-* packaegs and
re-install; although this may mean reinstalling Gnome packages, etc.

 Has anyone had any luck running Stable and moving to a newer kernel than
 2.6.8-11?

 There is a sensor module (drivers/i2c/chips/lm85.c for emc6d100-*) in
 2.6.12 that would solve a problem for me. I can either move to a newer
 kernel or build the module for 2.6.8-11.

 My hunch is I should stay with 2.6.8-11 and try to find a way to build or
 borrow just the new module - can anyone point me to a how-to?

I too failed to upgrade from 2.6.8-11 but that was because I could
not find suitable nvidia drivers for the 2.6.15 kernel which I got from
backports.

Re: Lots of packets are missing in amd64/etch...

 Hello.

 I've just received a new server on amd64 (em64t) platform and tried to
 install sarge.
 Unfortunately, hardware is hardly supported by sarge, so I dist-upgraded
 to etch immediately after install.

 But now I faced the strange problem: a lot of packages aren't available
 in amd64 etch.
 And one of the nastiest things is unavailable gcc 8( So I can't install
 pbuilder and rebuild packages by myself.

 Can anyone explain me what's going on? Is official arch inclusion not
 over yet? Where can I find the progress reports?

 Thanks a lot in advance.

 PS. Please CC me, I'm not on the list

Debian sid amd64 is being autobuild. From there packages slowly
migrate to etch simultanious for every architecture with the usual
rules (minimum age, no new bugs, depends are there). For etch to have
all amd64 packages every package has to migrate to etch. That just
takes time.

Looking at gcc packages.qa.debian.org tells me the following:

http://packages.qa.debian.org/g/gcc-defaults.html

* 10 days old (needed 10 days)
* gcj/m68k unsatisfiable Depends: gcj-4.1 (= 4.1.0-2)
* gij/m68k unsatisfiable Depends: gij-4.1 (= 4.1.0-2)
* gobjc++/m68k unsatisfiable Depends: gobjc++-4.1 (= 4.1.0-2)
* libgcj-dev/m68k unsatisfiable Depends: libgcj7-dev (= 4.1.0-2)
* cpp (i386, alpha, hppa, ia64, mips, mipsel, powerpc, amd64, arm, m68k,
s390, sparc) is (less) buggy! (1 = 1)
* Valid candidate
* Invalidated by dependency
* Not considered
* Depends: gcc-defaults gcj-4.1 (not considered)

An gcj-4.1 is blocked by freetype which in turn is only 5 out of 10
days old.

 There still should be at least an empty Packages file.

Well when I looked there wasn't even a directory to contain the empty
file. I imagine this is a mistake.
