You can get nvidia source from nvidia.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_amd64_display_archive.html

The source is inside the install package.

Just run the file with -x, --extract-only

So .. i like make my kernel image by myself, and use the nvidia
installer .. i never had problems. A lot gnu/debian versions .. stable
or unstable+experimental .. i never had problems. But the nv module
works great ..

So now aim using the beta nvidia driver and it's works great ..

I eventually found that out. But it took a couple of years to happen, and
it only broke on my 64-bit system.

My solution on that system?

Avoid the nvidia driver, and use the nv driver.

It seems faster (for normal desktop work), and it handles dual monitors (two
video cards), though not TwinView.

So, ultimately, my mistake actually turned out to be a benefit.

Though I'm /still/ using the regular nvidia binary installer on my 32-bit
work laptop.

What bugged me more was the latest xorg transition.

Anyway, I hope Debian doesn't get as wrapped-around-the-axle with scripting
the way RedHat did by version 8 (long ago). That's what prompted me to stop
using RedHat.

VESA support is a function of your video card, not your motherboard.
The video bios is responsible for it, not your motherboard bios.

Until the next xorg upgrade overwrites one of the files and breaks things.
Packages are a much better idea to use.

The nvidia installer is one of those awful things that works fine
initially but will cause a breakage down the road when doing something
seemingly unrelated.

Unless you want your system to be like windows, just avoid 3rd party
installers.

vesa mode

2009-07-10 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hi all,

mybe someone can explain this: I am starting my debian system with the
parameter vga=791 (to switch into vesa mode)

Sometimes the computer (AMI-BIOS) does not do it correctly (stays in 640x480
then), but with a reset everything starts perfectly. What is the reason for
this behaviour?

On my amd64-system (Phoenix BIOS) this behaviour NEVER appeared.

Is the reason for this the setting "VGA initialisation" ? In my BIOS it is set
to "AGP" as I am using an AGP-Graphicscard. Or is it just a timing problem?

Would be nice, if someone could give me some background information.

Cheers

Hans

Yes, I know this option. This would have been the other choice, if no one will
be able to send a debian package. But still I hope

Hans .. solv your problem are more simple than you think. Just make sure
do you have the headers package and build-essential. than go to the
nvidia driver support, get the 64 driver and run witout terminal. The
install will make and install the modules on your modules page, and you
can choose inside it recreate your xorg.conf ..
