Wheezy

2013-05-08 Thread Jaime Ochoa Malagón
Hi,

After my upgrade to wheezy my X has failed.

I tried to find the problem to fix it, and I was not be able to do it...

I have a partial success narrowing the problem...

And I ask you for help to find it clearly I don't know if it is amd64
specific or not...

The usual suspect is the nvidia driver BUT only after the upgrade?

Anyway if I downgrade this packages X works and conversely if I upgrade it
the X fail.

chptma@refugio:~$ apt-show-versions |grep upgradeable
libgl1-mesa-dri/wheezy upgradeable from 7.7.1-5 to 8.0.5-4
xorg/wheezy upgradeable from 1:7.5+8+squeeze1 to 1:7.7+2
xserver-xorg/wheezy upgradeable from 1:7.5+8+squeeze1 to 1:7.7+2
xserver-xorg-core/wheezy upgradeable from 2:1.7.7-16 to 2:1.12.4-6
xserver-xorg-input-evdev/wheezy upgradeable from 1:2.3.2-6 to 1:2.7.0-1+b1
xserver-xorg-input-kbd/wheezy upgradeable from 1:1.4.0-2 to 1:1.6.1-1+b1
xserver-xorg-input-mouse/wheezy upgradeable from 1:1.5.0-2 to 1:1.7.2-3
xserver-xorg-video-vesa/wheezy upgradeable from 1:2.3.0-3 to 1:2.3.1-1+b1

X start normally but when I click in the greeting login of kdm X restart
and in some times freeze the machine...

If I only type the password all seems to start and after some seconds fail.

For failsafe xterm works even kwin (with effects) and chromium but if I
start konsole I get a corrupt diplay and a crash of X...

Do you know the cause or have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

update-grub

Hi,

I know there is probably not the best place to ask...

Any way, since many upgrades of the linux-image I have problems to
setup the image...

the error is pretty similar to...

run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/zz-update-grub
Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub
run-parts: /etc/kernel/postinst.d/zz-update-grub exited with return code 1
Failed to process /etc/kernel/postinst.d at
/var/lib/dpkg/info/linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64.postinst line 799.

I found the update-grub command do nothing and silently end...

To have the image correctly setup I need to boot in the old image
2.6.32-9 and everything goes right...

The images installed

ii linux-image-2.6.32-3-amd64 2.6.32-9
 Linux 2.6.32 for 64-bit PCs
iF linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64 2.6.32-26
 Linux 2.6.32 for 64-bit PCs

udev

ii udev163-1
 /dev/ and hotplug management daemon

Where is the problem with the new images I pretend to let it pass but
now I feel I need to do something that I don't know...

Could you help me please?

Re: Debian desktop support for virtualisation

2010-06-25 Thread Jaime Ochoa Malagón
Well, this is an old document and in general we don't use it any more
because there is the "accepted debian way" to use 32bits programs,
that is with ia32-libs, and in my particular case an old copy of
"ia32-apt-get" (better approach in my opinion) both could achieve the
solution of the second perspective...

iceweasel in a chroot for a 32 bits plugin?...
try ndiswrapper and iceweasel in 64bits...

This is ancient history in amd64 land...
We have stable, complete and working systems nowadays...

wine use ia32-libs to run...

a drive of 32 bits for cups? Ok, run it in a chroot and connect as a
remote server...

I prefer debian I don't even try redhat in years because I don't like
many things about it...
(the old redhat approach is to install both libraries 32bits and
64bits there is the same today?)

Re: Big problems with scientifc use of amd64

2010-06-17 Thread Jaime Ochoa Malagón
Francesco,

I have a few recommendations to accomplish what do you want...

A test "independent" system to probe your old software in squeeze
sooner or later you have to do that...
A virtual machine to use some software (MPICH2)...
A chroot same purpose...
On a test "independent" system do the mixed up of lenny and squeeze to
have the software do you want or need and test the combination (I have
this one) (lenny+squeeze+sid+experimental) obviously some combination
crash and possibly do you need some knowledge to repair it or start
again your test system with lenny and do another mix...

Do you choose Debian for stability or because you have the latest
version of the software?...

If you want another distribution because you have the latest version
of the software then you don't need really a strong stability...

One last important point...

If you really want stability then keep it that way: in stable world
you don't have NEW software until the next release...

Good luck

Re: Memory problems

2010-06-02 Thread Jaime Ochoa Malagón
Jonatan,

In my opinion your virtual machines have a very large memory (4G) if
you only want to run the basic and a few daemons cut it and try again
I belive the buffers are used because you have memory available to
spare...

chp...@refugio:~$ free
 total used free sharedbuffers cached
Mem: 20610762019148 41928 0 123156 586100
-/+ buffers/cache:1309892 751184
Swap: 1959800 01959800

I'm running X, firefox, chrome, kde and some daemons...

Luis,

Esta lista es en ingles...

Tu problema no es especifico de amd64 por lo que te recomiendo la lista de
usuarios de debian en español...

http://www.debian.org/international/Spanish#listas

El sistema gráfico se llama X y para tu mother board (ATI Radeon 3000)
necesitas instalar los drivers radeon/ati y si quieres aceleración grafica
necesitas los drivers fglrx...

Y recuerda google es tu amigo

how many votes are against ia32-libs transitional?

is wine to be removed from the amd64 repos?

whit the exception of wine the important ia32-packages usualy are external
ones and they use to depend from ia32-libs and are happy with the
transitional...

at this moment I prefer to have a previous version of ia32-apt-get (20)
I also prefer the wrapper over apt-get (could it be optional in the package
config?)

I have ia32-apt-get for a while now and this is true googleearth stop
working in the last update because I test it months ago...

you only need to install ia32-libnss-mdns and googleearth works again...
(should depend on this library)

In general take a few minutes to check all your ia32 applications, all
should work...

ia32-libs is a bundle of libraries and configurations ia32-apt-get is
exactly the oposite a way to install the right libraries for your
application not all the common libraries needed

good luck

2009-07-01 Thread Jaime Ochoa Malagón
Hi,

Let me try to explain this.

First debian try to be pure on the distribution packages e.i. all the
packages try to be amd64 for the amd64 version but some packages are not
designed to be 64bits like wine...

wine is an 32bits application and needs 32bits libraries

the same for skype and acroread both programs needs 32bits libraries

If you have a program 32bits and this needs some libraries this libraries
are 32bits there is no other way...
If you have a program 64bits and this needs some libraries this libraries
are 64bits there is no other way...

nspluginwrapper is a program that allows to run firefox 32bits plugins in
firefox 64bits and for this needs both libraries...

You must pin your 32bits repos to prevent the mix of this libraries, in
general you must not allow the replace of a 64bits library with a 32bits
library...

You should install only the 32bits libraries that yours "only 32bits"
programs needs...

Hope this help.

Re: 32 bit pkg on amd64

2009-03-19 Thread Jaime Ochoa Malagón
I was waiting for the update in sid, but now I change it in the
source, my skype is now working, in that way. On the other hand the
libraries required are in conflict with ia32-libs and then with wine
nspluginwrapper and so on...

wine is working installed from ia32 repo...

I'm pretty happy this feel much better than ia32-libs...

This is the new way to go? in that case how could nspluginwrapper work?

I'm asking to know if I should keep my dchroot or only wait for the changes...

Great job, Thanks.

Goswin,

Hi, thanks for all your work, I have installed ia32-apt-get and modify
de /etc/apt/foregin/sources.list to have the skype repo, I also
include it in the /etc/apt/sources.list

refugio:~# apt-get update |grep skype
apt-get: update
Ign http://download.skype.com stable Release.gpg
Ign http://download.skype.com stable/non-free Translation-en_US
Ign http://download.skype.com stable Release
Ign http://download.skype.com stable/non-free Packages/DiffIndex
Hit http://download.skype.com stable/non-free Packages

but apt-get install skype

refugio:~# apt-get install skype
apt-get: install skype
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package skype is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package skype has no installation candidate

There is something more I need to know?

Thanks

You need to setup your /etc/apt/sources.list for stable, testing and
unstable repos and use aptitude to change differente versions of
programs and know debian way to handle dependencies...
you could use backports and unofficial and marillat repos to have more
idea about all the info mentioned here...

debian have all the configuration in /etc

You are learning that the many problems in debian are already solved...
You need time to have your own problems to solve yourself...

UNIX is a trademark and is owned by a few one of then is ¿Berkley
University? they have various children projects to bring a UNIX-like
experience for free (all the BSD FreeBSD OpenDSB and others)

Are they similar to linux?

mostly you should feel comfotable with any of them

What are the differences?

Some aplication have historic differences like "ps" or "ls" but they
are pretty similar..

Linux have by far many more users and much more support, many programs

A couple of historic data (hope I remmember well):

-First version of linux has distributed allmost in source not
precompiled packages...
-apt-get could compile the program before install it in your system...

Final note:
Debian package system have many programs to admin the installed ones
adept, kpackage, aptitude, dselect and others...
Some of then are based on apt-get (that have many options you should
learn an feel confortable to use whe your need it.) and (all should?)
use dpkg to install the packages and if you hare really curiosity
should know the use of all the dpkg-* programs...

Any way you have so many posibilities with debian FEEL THE FREEDOM...
do you has selected you x windows manager?
(gnome/kde(3/4)/compiz/xfce/9wm/fvwm/)?
iceape/iceweasel/konqueror?
is your file system lvm/ext2/ext3/XFS or...?
nvidia/ati/intel?
gaim/pidgin/amsn/kopete/gnome messenger?

that will be a shame...

If you have doubts about the videomode used read /var/log/X.org... to
have a good explanation about X run.

Go head this will just work again, don't worry and as a next step in
the time you could install 64 bits and change (with the help of
another partition), and when you feel comfortable don't boot 32 bits

the same system clean reboot with kernel 2.6.23 is not problem play a
DVD, clean reboot and boot with 2.6.24 the DVD don't work until I turn
off the dma access to the drive...

in the anexed file there is a lsmod grep ide|ata and hdparm -i finally
hdparm -d for both kernels first 2.6.24...

do you have any ideas to solve this issue?

Thank in advance.

I think we missed the point, we must remember some people prefer his
OS "pure", with no comercial software, I'm not against this software,
I use flash-plugin in my machine, no critical problems, they are
working, this time we have a flash-plugin (again and now really
works)...

If the computer work fine without the new video card the ram is good
but the "hole" to the external video card is defective, you shuld try
to upgrade your BIOS and if that don't work the motherboard is the
part not compatible.

In my opinion you should try another video card...
and you should be able to identify the X driver (I don't know how,

Hm. In the framebuffer that gets loaded from Intel G33 the first line
it spits out is
Loading essential drivers
then
Starting [I think it says starting] /scripts/premount

In /etc/modules it has
firewire-sbp2 and
loop

... and that is all. I don't see anything in lsmod that strikes me
as graphics-related. Let me know, I can load a list here:

Señor Esimio, esta lista es en Ingles
Mr. This list is in english

Necesitas instalar los paquetes de nvidia ..
You need to install the followin packages

ii nvidia-glx 169.09-1
  NVIDIA binary Xorg driver
ii nvidia-glx-ia32 169.09-1
  NVIDIA binary XFree86 4.x driver
ii nvidia-kernel-2.6.24-1-amd64169.09-1+2.6.24-3
NVIDIA binary kernel module for Linux 2.6.24
ii nvidia-kernel-common20051028+1-0.1
NVIDIA binary kernel module common files
ii nvidia-kernel-source169.09-1
  NVIDIA binary kernel module source
ii nvidia-settings 1.0+20070502-1
Tool of configuring the NVIDIA graphics driv
ii nvidia-xconfig 1.0+20070502-1
  The NVIDIA X Configuration Tool

El paquete nvidia-kernel se CREA e instala con la siguiente instrucción
The package nvidia-kernel is CREATED and installed with the next instruction

m-a a-i nvidia

si quieres instalar flash intenta con lenny
to install flash I recommend to use lenny

de ephyfani no tengo idea
about ephyfani I have no idea

Debian no pretende tener todo actulizado sino verdaderamente estable
Debian don't intend to be in the fashion instead have the aim to be rock solid

En resumen usa lenny que probablemente soporte tu tarjeta de red sin
problemas y aumenta por mucho la compatibilidad necesaria, como no
tienes mucha experiencia te recomiendo que ocupes la versión de 32
bits (386).

I really recomend to use lenny, or the 32 bits version.

try hard your google search

That must be the case of a 64 bit binary
I you run ldd on "ls" inside the chroot and out of chroot you could
see the diference in the pointers of the library...
you have the 32 bit libraries installed outside the chroot, and
thank's to that the program is eable to run...

Some dark memory seems to tell me that this pacman rom was in the

configuration need to be ajusted to the new sysadmin (in a laptop

1.- did you install this machine by yourself?

let me explain, the proxy configuration and app (just a guess
anon-proxy see http://packages.debian.org/anon-proxy)

don't appear by himself in your machine...

but if you don't install it then you mustn't remove the package
beacuse could be really well configured...

2.- did you could be able to use any other net tool (e.j. iceweasel)

3.- could you simply reinstall to avoid the problem?

good luck...

yeap I couln't answer before because I don't remember "udev"...

to fix the random choice of ethX there is a file in /etc/udev*/*net*
in that file the MAC is stored and could make some noise, try to erase
the lines to test...

In my opinion certainly all the applications wrote in the past has no
designed to use 64 bits operations and many algorithms could have
beneffits of this, if in the same bus (64 bits) are you only use 32>=
bits operands there is no gain at all...

The plus is involved in move and operate data at double rate 64/32 if
the code is rarely doing this we have this slowdown, obviously thats
not true if its not a full 64 bits REAL bus...

And (this is only my knowledge from 8085 -> 8088/80188 old procesors)
the pointers to the data are in many cases relatives and not
necesarily should be so long, if this is not true now let me know, I
just presume that the nowadays procesors still have the ugly segment
registers...

I suppose is possible to make an USB-flash bootable eable to assemble
the raid/lvm in boot time ready to repair the faulty system, is n't
it?

the floppy equivalent just to bring up the old system, or work with it
in a chroot...
