Re: Changing from stable to testing.....
Hi Whit, last time I tried to dist-upgrade to squeeze, I got stuck in an (for me) unresolvable loop: The system wanted to upgrade the kernel-image and udev in one run - which failed. apt-get always complained, that the kernel-image needs the new udev-package to upgrade - and udev itself needed the new kernel-image... I don't know, if this problem still exists - if yes: you should find a way of not getting into this loop, where no "apt-get -f install" helped to stop this. I reinstalled lenny after this... ;) Best regards, sigi On Sat, Oct 23, 2010 at 10:35:31PM -0400, Whit Hansell wrote: > Just thinking that since Squeeze is coming up to be the new stable and > have been running Lenny since March of 2009, I was wondering about how > difficult it would be to change from Lenny(stable) to Squeeze(testing) > now. Problem: java-plugin
Hi! I have some trouble to get a java-plugin working on my debian-amd64-machine with a new lenny installation (2.6.26-1-amd64). I tried the plugins java-gcj-compat-plugin and gcjwebplugin, but they both didn't work. Now I've installed icedtea-gcjwebplugin - this works neither: Iceweasel and Epiphany don't recognize any java-plugin... The symlinks are set like this: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 41 10. Nov 15:24 /usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins/libjavaplugin.so -> /etc/alternatives/iceweasel-javaplugin.so lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 52 10. Nov 15:27 /etc/alternatives/iceweasel-javaplugin.so -> /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/lib/amd64/gcjwebplugin.so update-alternatives --config java says: Es gibt nur 1 Programm, welches java bereitstellt (/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/bin/java). Nichts zu konfigurieren. I tried the commands update-java-alternatives --jre --set java-6-openjdk and update-java-alternatives --auto but they didn't help. Can anybody tell me, what's wrong with all this? Thanks a lot for any hint! Regards, sigi -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? AFAIK there's a problem with vidalia and debian, because vidalia can't connect to the tor-process which starts during system-startup in debian as user debian-tor. The tor-maintainers are working on this issue, which is assigned as one project to this years google's summer of code - so hopefully there will be a vidalia-package for debian in the near future. I don't know, why there's a tork-package for debian - because it has this same important issue. another nvidia module issue
Hi, my upgrade yesterday brought me in a new Xorg, now version 1:7.2-3. After that, the xserver didn't find my nvidia-module anymore. I recompiled the sources I had (1.0.8776-4), but Xorg didn't recognize the driver, although it was on it's right place. Then I tried a new version of nvidia-kernel-source, 1.0.9755-1, compiled and installed it with "m-a prepare" & "m-a a-i nvidia" and all went ok. But since then, my xserver only shows up with a framerate of 50Hz - before I had always 75Hz. I tried the Options "UseEDIDFreqs" "FALSE" and "ModeValidation" "NoEdidModes" in my xorg.conf-file, but that showed no effect - and yes, before I recompiled the nvidia-stuff, I removed nvidia-glx and re-installed it later Before I'm getting eye-cancer, I switched to 'nv'-driver, but this isn't a longtime solution... My xorg.log is here, until June 16th: http://paste.debian.net/30463 My card is a "GeForce 6200 TurboCache", and I'm running kernel 2.6.18-4. Has anyone a hint, what I can try to get it working? cursor problems in firefox
Hi, since I'm using the nv-video module here, my cursor shows strange behaviour in any form fields in firefox: If I write something into formulas on websites, or even into the url-line, my cursor produces a new cursor after every single character, when I'm using my arrow-keys to e.g. correct something wrong I typed in. It's very annoying, and only happens in my browsers like firefox and galeon... Has anyone a hint, how I can stop this? kernel without smp
Hi, as I noticed today, for my wlan-card-module, I need a kernel without smp-support enabled... This was the reason, my new rt2570-module always locked my keyboard: the prebuilt debian kernel I'm using (2.6.17-2-amd64) has smp enabled. Now, to resolve the problem, do I have to build my own kernel (what I not really want), or is it enough to install the package linux-image-2.6-amd64-k8? I didn't find any kernel *amd64-k8 for etch, which existed earlier, so I think that linux-image-2.6-amd64-k8 (as transitional package) will only update to the latest generic amd-kernel available? So, only chance to build my own one to use my rt2570-module? Regards, sigi. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
module rt2570 freezes debian etch
Hi, since my last upgrade on my etch-machine some days ago, the wlan-module for my dwl-g122 card always freezes my keyboard, when it tries to get a IP via dhcp... It was the package rt2570-source 1.1.0+cvs20060620-3 I tried to use on my debian-etch machine, running with kernel 2.6.17-2-amd64 and gcc-4.1. For now I switched back to the source version rt2570-cvs-2006032410 - this seems to work for now, but I can't monitor it's signal-strength with wavemon using this version. The source-package shipped with stable-repository did freeze my keyboard as well - the version I'm using now seems a lot outdated... Is anyone here using the same card or module and can give a hint, what's going wrong? Thanks for any reply! sigi. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". etch netinstall beta3 & encryption
Hi, today I tried to install debian with the actual etch beta3 netinst.iso - and failed with the new encryption possibility... I wanted to encrypt all partitions without /boot, and tried to configure its own partitions for '/boot' '/' and '/home'. After this partman showed that /boot would have a ext3-filesystem and the other two a logical-volume. But when the installer wants to install the base-system after this, it warns me about not having a root-partition. I didn't find a possibility, to say at one point, which mountpoints the encrypted-volumes should be associated to. Is the encryption of the whole root-filesystem not implemented yet? For me it seems, that I can only encrypt a partition, which is not used during the installation-process, like a data-partition e.g. Not to mention, that this whole process of encrypting partitions failed several times during the writing of random data on them - and the installer worked one time on my 5th boot of the netinst-iso, until I reached this partitioning-process Did I do something wrong, or where can I prepare the whole thing, that its associating one logical volume to one special mountpoint? OK, if this is true, the performance is no argument. Another point is, that it possibly is more secure to have more little than one big 300GB partition, that it should minimize the risk of data-loss: if one partition crashes, the other ones should be ok. etch installer and dm-crypt
Hi, during my next debian etch-install I want to give the facility to encrypt my hdd a try. Now I read in the installation-howto, that it's recommended to set up one partition for every encrypted mount-point, like /var /tmp and /home. This section of the howto --- If you created encrypted volumes during the installation and assigned them mount points, you will be asked to enter the passphrase for each of these volumes during the boot. The actual procedure differs slightly between dm-crypt and loop-AES. --- made me a little unhappy with this pocedure. If I understand this right, I would have to type a passphrase 4 times during the system boot: 3 times to access encrypted partitions and 1 time to login... this sounds a lot not userfriendly. Is there a way to set all this up, and to type the passphrase once for all the encrypted volumes? Or to make the system bootable with a key on a usb-stick inserted in it's slot during the boot? I didn't find very useful hints on the web. And if there is no practical solution, I think I'd better leave it all unencrypted... Any possibilities known here by anyone? etch netinst question about wlan
Hi, I have to do a new debian installation next days and downloaded one of the netinstall iso-images (beta3) from the debian website. My problem is, that I need a wlan-module which is not yet packaged for debian, the rt2570-wlan-module. Now I thought if it's possible, to build this module on another machine with same kernel an gcc as on the netinst-image and to load it manually during the installation-process. I think, it's not possible to install a basic system with such an netinst-image and compile the module afterwards, because the kernel-headers are not on this disk, am I right? Is there any way to handle this? Or do I have to get a complete-debian-installation image first? Did you have to rebuild your nvidia > driver again or does Xorg use the nv driver? I actually use the nvidia-driver. I had build it for the sarge-kernel 2.6.8. and was surprised, that after my new installation of the 2.6.16-kernel there automatically the module nvidiafb was used... So, I think, that this module now is natively supported by newer kernels..? With this sarge-installation I recently can't print or scan and have no sound (nForce-based too)... With my formerly testing/unstable-installation all this worked fine. But I don't like to download this DVD-isos for testing again, and install this all for a third time! dist-upgrade sarge to etch
Hi, some days ago I had to reinstall my system, and I chose debian sarge to install on it. Now, I liked to have more recent packages on my machine, like I had before. I tried a 'apt-get dist-upgrade' but this wants me to uninstall nearly my whole gnome and kde stuff... totally over 300 packages. Is this normal, and I should reinstall this packages, after the upgrade, or is there sonething wrong with this? In my sources.list I only have the 'official' mirrors listed, up to now: deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian-amd64/debian/ testing main contrib non-free deb-src http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free Is there something wrong here, or should I risk this upgrade? problems with gnome and aptitude...
Hi, since yesterday I'm unable to start my gnome-desktop. After a crash of my system gnome doesn't start, but kde works. Everytime I start a gnome-program under kde, a window comes up, explaining, that there is a problem with loading my configurations. There is a CORBA-problem it says: "Der Client konnte auf Grund eines CORBA-Fehlers nicht zur Serverliste hinzugefügt werden: IDL:omg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0" The second thing is, that I can't do anything with dselect/aptitude/dpkg, because everytime I try to install or remove anything, it shows this warning: Vorkonfiguration der Pakete ... (Lese Datenbank ... dpkg: Fehler beim Bearbeiten von abiword-plugins-gnome (--remove): files list file for package `libavcodeccvs' is missing final newline Fehler traten auf beim Bearbeiten von: abiword-plugins-gnome Bearbeitung wurde angehalten, da zu viele Fehler auftraten. This warning occurs everytime I want to use apt... The last thing since yesterday is this message during boottime: xfs[3966]: segfault at 0001 rip 00406000 rsp 7fbaa810 error 4 [...] sessreg[5615]: segfault at 0008 rip 2aab4185 rsp 7fe79510 error 4 what does this mean? It's impossible to reinstall/uninstall xfs, because of my apt-problem above All this happens since my crash yesterday Has anybody out there an idea what I can do about it? Thanks for any hints! sigi.
