I don't know how I can be any clearer. The second hard disk has
2.6.8-11-amd64-k8 and only 2.6.8-11-amd64-k8 and nothing else. That's all
it has. It can be booted directly from grub (as things stand now it's the
default boot option. On my older HD I have 2.6.8-i386 (etch). It can be
booted by selecting its option from the grub menu. At this point I don't
any any chroot things.
I hope that clears things up.
Cheers,
Jonathan

Excuse me, but I don't understand, the second HD has 2.6.8-11-amd64-k8,
but it is a amd64 fersh instalation or is a i386 installation with SID
stock kernel named "amd64-k8"?

Thanks for the advice, Brian, but I don't think you understand the
nature of the problem. I don't need to boot up with knoppix. I have a
very nicely working 2.6.8 i386 installation. Debian has no problem with
my hardware and I know what modules etc. need to be loaded. So booting
with knoppix won't tell me anything new (in fact that's what I did when
I first got this system and then installed 32bit Debian). The problem is
specific to my separate (sitting on a different HD) 2.6.8-11-amd64-k8
installation. The required driver is snd_via82xx but it won't install
for some obscure reason that (up to now) nobody seems to know. It seems
to have something to do with the arch folder not containing an amd64
entry; at least that's what alsa is complaining about. (see my other
posts for more details)
Thanks anyway,
Jonathan

Try booting with a Knoppix CD. Let it correctly indentify the sound
hardware, let it correctly load the modules and then inspect the
configuration. Of course, this will only identify the modules that work
with the linux kernel distributed with Knoppix BUT it will give some
insight. Good Luck.

I'm beginning to wonder if there isn't a bug with 2.6.8-11-amd64-k8. Is
there anyone out there using this kernel without problems?

I have a working unstable amd64 installation here (64 bit), running
Linux 2.6.11-9-amd64-k8 and ALSA, and my sound chip is also a
snd_via82xx.

I don't recall setting anything up, but I did run alsaconf which found
the sound chip. Unfortunately I can't think of anything that might help
you along, but feel free to ask for the content of specific files or
whatever you can think of.

Sorry Len, no help at all. My card is in the /proc/asound/modules file (the
only one there). It is:
0 snd_via82xx
and that's the entire contents of that file.
I can't do any adjusting because no mixer (alsamixer, amixer, kmixer)
recognises that there is a card:
Attila:/proc/asound# amixer
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such file or directory
Attila:/proc/asound# alsamixer

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or
directory
I did put snd_via82xx is the /etc/modules file but that didn't change
anything either (I notice it's not in my /etc/modules file in work
functioning i386 setup).
Back to ripping the whole thing out I guess.
Thanks again,
Jonathan

In my experience alsaconf is useless and does nothing to help anyone.
cat /proc/asound/cards to see if any currently loaded driver has found
your chip. If yes, then you just have permissions and volume settings
to work out. If no, the right driver is not loaded yet. Loading the
driver is usualyl as simple as adding the driver name to /etc/modules
such as snd-emu10k1, snd-via82cxx or snd-intel8x0 or whichever your chip
uses.

Hi Len,
I am running a pure 64bit but the driver is not loaded. I've shown you
the output of running alsaconf and alsamixer says it can't find any
driver, nor can amixer etc. It keeps going on about not finding the
modutils architecture. I am in the audio group .Maybe I'll rip the whole
thing out and start again.

Just an amd64 kernel on i386 distribution (which is what I currently
run, along with a 64bit chroot for testing things). With the mix I have
to use a few things from 64bit since the kernel is 64bit, although most
32bit stuff works just fine with it.

If you are running a pure 64bit then it should be working with that
driver loaded already assuming the /dev entries exist and your user is
in the audio group and alsamixer has been used to set the volume and
mute appropriately.

Hi Len,
I'm running amd64 and i386 separately on two different HD's. They are
both bootable and my problems arise on the amd64 installation. The i386
is fine, no problems anywhere. So I need to know about "things having to
be done a bit differently if running amd64". Please enlighten me.

Are you running i386 or amd64 version of sarge? The amd64 kernel exists
in both, but things have to be done a bit differently if running amd64
kernel on i386 install.
